Marvel's cosmic side is like DC's mystic side. It is the less explored but arguably more interesting part of their universe.
Agreed. Annihilation helped put the focus back on Marvel Cosmic, but DC needs something similar.
Hyenaguy Especially when guys like Jim Starlin just made it EXPLODE in the 1970s through Captain Marvel (OG version) and Adam Warlock.
Matt Draper I would argue the Infinite Crisis tie in comic Day of Vengeance was DC Mystic’s equivalent to Cosmic Marvel’s Annihilation. But than again, that event (Day of Vengeance) didn’t end up generating more readership for those characters; let alone an awesome team book spin off staring said characters.
Really made me wish that Justice League Dark had more readership from its initial New 52 run.
I agree, Day of Judgement is about as close as DC has gotten in recent years. I think couching it in the larger Infinite Crisis sort of buried it, even though it was cool that they had the 4 smaller events tying into the larger one.
Matt Draper Yeah I know. Villains United, Rann-Thanagar War, The Omac Project and the previously mentioned Day of Vengence (yeah, I gave the wrong name . . . in hindsight I should of known since Spectre, the Spirit of Vengeance, was the main focus) were all great books on their own. Hell when I first read them in high school I assumed they were their own events rather than supplementary stories for a much bigger event.
Still though, if Day of Vengeance was basically its own event rather than a tie in it could of tell stories that give a deeper level of characterization to these mystic characters the same way Annihilation (and its sequel Conquest) for the cosmic Marvel characters.
The Fantastic Four is my favorite Marvel superteam. They have incredible powers, but also have very human personalities and problems.
Vincent Franklin I was a fan and collector of Master of Kung-fu. With Shang Chi as the main character. NO powers at all. Just his knowledge and Kung fu abilities. With his Confucius meditation as his guiding force throughput his struggles against his evil father Dr. Fu Manchu. Great book and art. I started at number 34 and collected every month until the last issue in the mid eightes. GREAT BOOK AND SERIES. TRULY! CHECK IT OUT!

Great stuff, I love how Johnny is traumatized by the things he saw when he went to retrieve the Ultimate Nullifier and his inability to comprehend the scope of what he saw, it was great way to demonstrate the scale of the story and stakes. Its a must read in my opinion.
This is a seriously excellent video. The Galactus Trilogy is the absolute pinnacle of Stan and Jack's collaborations and it's great to have it broken down and put into context so succinctly.

I personally wasn't a fan of the older comics I always saw them as corny and fun with the newer ones having more emotion then I read issues 44-52 of the Fantastic Four and they made me really feel for the characters, especially Johnny and Ben even the Silver Surfer had his amazing moments I love these comics
To me this is the DEFINITIVE FF STORY THE DEFINITIVE LEE/ KIRBY STORY
The credit argument between Jack and Stan (and Steve) is always so interesting to me. Yes, Jack and Steve's art is incredible and can stand on it's own, but once Stan's words are there do they not fit so perfectly? What else but Stan's over-written, over-dramatic prose can possibly fit Jack's highly detailed Gods and Steve's mind-bending surrealism? It's a shame their collaboration broke down over time, but this story is perhaps the perfect example of how when they worked together they created something beyond what either could do alone.
You can certainly recognise Stan's contribution.

This is where Marvel went galactic for true. And the famous *Kirby Crackle* to define cosmic energy usage, came into play. Classic trilogy. This is an excellent video and because of that, I've subbed.

Kirbys FF art didn't take off truly until Joe Sinnot inked it and improved it at least by 50%. Sinnot doesn't get enough credit. Just look at the issues pre Sinnot.
I love the fantastic four they are seriously one of the best teams in the marvel universe
Three things:
1) I was lucky enough to get a reprint of this storyline (just the Galactus parts) in the 1990s. I still consider THE high point of the Kirby/Lee team. Speaking of which...
2) The more I hear about the falling out between Lee and Kirby, the sadder I get. To me, they were a version of Jagger and Richards that never worked out their differences. I find the knee-jerk reactions to that split particularly appalling. They mostly ignore stuff like how Lee was ALWAYS willing to give Kirby massive credit where due and Kirby could take his claims too far (when claiming you actually created Spiderman is enough to make infamous recluse Steve Ditko come out hiding to call bullshit, you likely misremembered or mischaracterized what really happened...and I say that as a Kirby admiree).
3) The closest thing the MCU has to the FF is the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a bit more Star Wars than FF (side note: I have heard rumors that the former was influenced by Kirby's Fourth World saga) but you can see the resemblance to the latter in the complicated family dynamics and the constant sense of exploration and discovery. Vol 2's Ego, another Kirby creation from comics, can even be considered a Galactus figure himself, albeit much human and loathsome.
Lee and Kirby really were a great team, so much in comics comes directly from them and I think today people are too quick to dismiss one guy in favor of the other. Plus, Ditko deserves a lot of love, too.
Matt Draper Even in my heavy collecting days, this was so, especially after Kirby died in the early to mid 1990s. Frank Miller, who was one of Kirby's fiercest advocates against Marvel, had nothing but admiration for Lee, even crediting him as an influence on Rusty The Boy Robot And The Big Guy with Geoff Darrow. That kind of settled the question for me there and then.
Warren Ellis rightly called Steve Ditko "the invisible man" of Marvel. He never sought out the acclaim and just went his own way. To my knowledge, he's never granted an interview (always write back a two word note to all such requests: "not interested"). He also created characters on his own with Charlton Comics, many of whom were the basis of Watchmen characters. So yeah, whether he wants it or not, he deserves more love.
Really, people hated on Stan because "it was the cool thing to do", but Jack was a difficult person to work with...him claiming he created Spiderman was...too much.
I read an interview with Kirby and his wife. I think he wouldn't have taken it too far without her prodding. She was a strong personality that seemed to push him to take the credit he deserves, but took it too far. She diminished Lee's role even in the Marvel office. She was supposed to be a very friendly person as long as you didn't cross her.
Of course Lee was creative but he was kind of a Walt Disney type shuckster that allowed people to excel beyond how they would've on their own, but hogged the credit.
Even though he gave Kirby credit, he was on record taking the sole credit when he could get away with it.
To hate Lee and Disney for this behaviour is to miss the point, I think, because that is the type of ego it took to succeed so grandly.

The fact that in order to use the ultimate nulifier correctly you need to stay focused to the max or that gizmo would eliminate everything in existence. Given the stakes in the story makes that simple arm stretching of Reed way More epic.
You really deserve as many subs as comicsexplained or comicstorian (probably more). Honestly they both aren't very impressive, Rob just rants for half an hour geeking out and comicstorian just spouts the story for people too lazy to read. You actually bring light to stories new and old and really analyze them without becoming pretentious or dragging it out too much. You hit that sweet spot of insight and pacing. Good job.
Thanks! I think Comicsexplained and Comicstorian both do good work and are nice people. They just do something very different than me. Their videos aren’t really my style, but I respect them for their work and their dedication to comics.

It is obvious that Kirby must have done more than Lee when it comes to creations. But I think people tend to be a little hard on Stan. If it wasn't for him, these *stories* probaply wouldn't have become the succes they became.
Like many other artists in those days and up until the 90s where artists got the opportunity to have more (copy)rights and ownership over their work, Kirby was of course taken advantage of. The artists' work sure must have been quite more harder and demanding than Lee's writing. But we still owe it to Lee also no matter how you look at it; Stan & Jack was interlocked in like a magic realm. We all know that. Nothing of what Kirby did more on-his-own was as huge a succes as what he created with The Man.

Silver Surfer and his master Galactus appeared for the first time in FF #48 (Cover 03/1966, avaible on 1965-12-08).
While Galactus is created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby together, Silver Surfer was created by Jack Kirby alone.

Your channel is really phenomenal and I really can't conceive of a way to say that without sounding all hokey, let alone at 2am, so let it be what it be. I came across you by way of your pieces on Waid's Daredevil and Loeb/Sale's Spider-Man. I'd just finished reading both of those, incidentally, when I decided to look up whether they had been discussed by someone in some form. You were the only guy who came up on search, and immediately you struck me as somebody with an earnest love for stories and their nuance. Few people I've seen match your enthusiasm, and fewer still choose to cover what you have -- from thoughtful assessments of Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts soundtracks to Moore's run on friggin' Swamp Thing of all books. It's all like a nesting doll of niche interest. Your thoughtfulness has helped to effectively consolidate my re-emergent love of the comic book medium in a way it hasn't been since years back. Your discussions are gems hidden in plain sight, and really the best alternative to certain superficial overviews that the bigger channels provide in the wake of nationwide cinematic-universe-fever. I hope you keep doing what you're doing, as well as you're doing it, so that more people get to discover newer and stranger stories to love, or maybe to re-discover them like I have. Thanks.
And speaking of early-Marvel partnerships, maybe a retrospective on crotchety-ol'-boy Ditko's work is a good idea. I love everything Kirby did for Marvel to pieces, but I feel like Ditko stays unreasonably unsung for, y'know, the guy who co-birthed Spider-Man. Doctor Strange specifically was a gorgeous book.

Really, nothing against the bigger channels or the people who get into the comics via the MCU and such, I'm happy they do, but it's sad that there doesn't seem to be much call for a deeper focus on the medium itself. Same goes for film or music. These videos never get too general or too pedantic. They're very holistic in the way they appraise these things, which is why I feel so many of us love your work and keep coming back. You love it, we love it, and it all becomes a harmonious lump of passion, breathtaking in scope -- it's dialogue and it's a sense of community. So just keep sharing the love and soon enough you'll become an eternally transcendent arbiter of Truth, Justice and the American Way for anyone who gives a hoot enough to keep digging.
P.S. I'd love to see you branch out to newspaper strips. Seeing as how you already got a start with Schulz, I think stuff like Calvin and Hobbes might easily be up your alley. I'll pray for more film content too. *wink*

Nicely done. Largely left out of current Marvel movie canon, Fantastic Four are still my personal favorite of Marvel Universe. The Galactus Trilogy, featuring Silver Surfer was Kirby & Lee at their absolute best.

im just wish when the stars aline,and we get an adaptation of the fantastic four and the galactus trilogy for the mcu.
Even after all these decades I still consider this the most epic of all comic book arcs (with the singular exception of Crisis, which is a bittersweet moment in time). I think what they understood back then that is completely lost now is that when such amazing moments (also team-ups and crossovers) are done they need to be done sparingly; that not only makes them truly special, rare moments, but also give the experience time to breath and let the ramifications sink in. Otherwise it becomes just business as usual; mondane. I think the same is on size of arcs; when it goes on for too long or has far too many tie-ins it goes from epic to monotonous (or at the very least financially unreasonable).

I remember all three issues. I may still have one or two of them. These are the issues I fell in love with Kirby's visuals and just as important the admiration of the galactic being...The Silver Surfer. Also just the mention of the New Gods gives me shivers. Although I'm no DC fan at all, The New Gods kicked ass and Marvel's The Inhumans rocked my world.

There was a reprint of The Galactus Saga back in the 1990’s, but probably the only reprint these days is the Marvel Masterworks Fantastic Four Volume 5 reprint which sells for $24.95 in trade paperback.
This is the reason why Galactus, SS and F4 have got to be saved for their own movie/movies in phase 4. It's rich content could stand alone if it wanted to.

4:40 let’s not forget that several times throughout their collaboration Jack would make comics entirely out of his own ideas either ignoring Stan or not being given anything to work with at all. Artists like Kirby and Ditko had much more influence in the story than Lee. Especially in the early days. It’s just sad to see many new “fans” think Stan is this all perfect creator of all things Marvel when that is far from the truth. Sure he’s not a fraud on the level of Bob Kane, but he certainly doesn’t deserve all the credit he gets while Jack Kirby definitely deserves a lot more.
Yeah, it’s definitely a complicated issue here. Not the ripoff level of Bob Kane, but way more complex than what a lot of fans think today. I definitely don’t want to lessen Lee’s contribution, but I had to dive into this issue here before I went any further.
RCBM Mines Lee himself has never denied Kirby his due. It's why I've never gotten the outright hate on the subject by Kirby partisans. Also, given what both parties did on their own after the breakup, it's obvious who was the more creative. Lee was entirely dependent on his artists while Kirby just went wherever and always came back with something interesting if not necessarily good.
Stan always called himself the CO-creator of these character, he never took credit for art.
And people like to think comics only consist of "funny pictures" ignoring how important dialogues are...heck, Stan changed the way comic book characters were written, just like Jack changed the way characters were drawed.
Just go to the credits. They say by Stan (The Man) Lee and Jack (King) Kirby equally.
Even in Amazing Spider-Man, it clearly says in many issues "plotted and drawn" by Steve Ditko.
I never understood the anti Stan ballyhoo. If Kirby and Ditko wanted more recognition they shouldn't have been so reclusive.
@@lyndoncmp5751 It’s been 5 years since I left this comment and my position’s gone up and down since. Ultimately, while Stan made a fair share of contributions to character and story to be a co-creator and he did have them credited, there is undeniable proof that at least in his younger years he downplayed Jack and Steve while making himself the frontman. While Ditko was certainly reclusive, that’s not the case at all for Kirby, who actually did fight to get treated fairly and had a falling out with Lee for that reason. They did reconcile before their passing apparently, which is good, but it’s important to note that a recent Stan Lee documentary was controversial and supported his mistreatment, with Jack Kirby’s living family publicly making a statement condemning it.

For me, Smilin' Stan and Jolly Jack were the Lennon and McCartney of comics - they were never quite as good apart as they were together, with Jack and John being the fiery, raw artistic geniuses who both left us far too soon, and Stan and Paul being the charismatic showmen who may never have seemed to be as creatively radical as their partners - on the surface at least - but who were nevertheless the most consummate craftsmen in their fields that you'll ever see, yes? (Heck, if you wanted to push the Beatles/Bullpen alchemic analogy still further, then you could see Sturdy Steve Ditko and George Harrison as the so-called 'Quiet Ones' who were somewhat overshadowed by their respective partners, but who still pushed their respective mediums into exotic new territory when given the chance...of course, the analogy falls down a bit when you try to think of a Marvel counterpart to good ol' Ringo...Jazzy Johnny Romita, maybe?).
PS: Any chance that you could cover the truly fantastic Dan Slott/Mike Allred 'Silver Surfer' run in a future video, please? It's not just my favourite recent Marvel comic, but my second favourite comic series full stop to have come out during the last few years, although James Roberts' 'Transformers: More Meets the Eye'/'Lost Light' series for IDW Comics just takes First (No-)Prize for me...(another excellent series which would also form another worthy subject for a future video of yours too as far as I'm concerned, but I digress...).

Yeah that makes sense. Plus, to be honest if this was in the MCU, that casting would most definitely not happen considering Norton has already made an appearance as the Hulk. Would just be too confusing I guess. I would believe him as a genius but John Krasinski would certainly be my first pick.

Imagine if Stan and Jack would have keep working together...the egos, always the freaking egos...
For the sake of DC and Marvel fans I'm glad that didn't happen.
There would be no Darkseid and the DC universe would be more boring ;)
And in consequence there would be no inspiration for Jim Starlin to create Thanos.
