nice job, I would recommend cleaning the areas that will be painted with isopropyl alcohool before applying the new paint, to remove any grease or oil.
Very good idea. Thanks for your suggestion.
And if one get can hold of it (in my country you'd need a special license for buying it): acetone. As it's even more effective in removing grease off surfaces, even lens elements in binoculars which usually get get tainted with the instrument's own focusing mechanism's grease.

Great video. To the point and no unnecessary intro. Thanks for the info, I will try to do my own lenses now. This would certainly help to freshen up lenses that I am going to sell.
Looks absolutely amazing.
I'm tempted to try it.
really good results, im going to do this!
Great video, seems like the best method anyone can attempt. I have read that folks use micro pipettes or like 2 hair brushes but that's being overly tedious in my opinion (respectable;e by any means of course) , when in fact its easier to wipe away excess like you do here, make it look so good! Fantastic work!
Super-helpful -- thanks!
I see this video is already 5 years old, but just wanted to let all Canon FD owners watching this: Get a wet wipe, even baby wet wipe, and try to brush the numbers with the wet wipe, and all the dirt will come off! I've done this to over 20 lenses. Trust me, you don't need to paint them. Now, back to the video, GREAT VIDEO!! Thank you for sharing the process
Thank you for the video.
Fantastic!
Thanks!
Very helpful!
I have a lens from 79 and it had some yellowing on the markings but I cleaned them off with isopropyl alcohol and it's like brand new.
crazy how this video appear on my search about analog lens
Good info.
this is awesome! what about cleaning the metal? and rubber? cheers
I use a cotton swab dampened with window cleaner (Windex) and work it over the painted numbers. You'll be surprised at the amount of soil that it will remove with little chance of damaging the surfaces. I would use your paint method as a last resort and only if some of the original paint was missing. It's a good video overall.
I got good results with that (not window cleaner, kitchen cleaner). Soak it a little. Then i cover it with a paper towel of some sorts and gently tap and rub it with a toothbrush.
You can do this until the paint becomes too soft and starts bleeding out.
But I found that this method didn't really work too well on old lenses. It would never return to the original color.
can enamel paint be used on camera bodies aswell?
I find that most of the time when the markings look like this it's enough to just clean them out with a toothbrush and some ipa, but be careful not to overclean it and actually clean out the paint aswell!
Exactly. In most cases, the paint isn't yellowed at all, just dirty. The fine hairs of the (tip of the) toothbrush will gently kick/brush out the dirt from the grooves. I use 70% alcohol. That has a 30% water in it so it can also dissolve skin salts residues. If it's just/only grease, IPA will do fine. If, after trying this, the paint really turns out to have yellowed - you can do the repainting trick from the OP or leave it yellow, adding to the vintage character of the lens :-)
The Correct way!! I been wondering if the white is yellow from dirt or age, maybe both?? - wonder cleaning with denatured alcohol and a qTip
Great video! Quick question, would the paint thinner have any adverse effect on the lens body?
Nope absolutely safe
what is the best way to try to fix one lens that it have all the numbers scratched ? the barrel is white were it was scratched, someone did it to hide the numbers sadly but i will love to recover this 45 years old lens
Can I use any type of thinner?
Wow! Great job! Do you have any recommendations for black area touch up?
I have used a spray paint, matt jet black RAL 9005. I don't spray it directly onto the lens, I spray a little into a pot and then use a small brush to apply it to the areas on the lens that need touching up.

Any ideas for a lens without recessed markings? Im thinking about a stencil but I'm not sure if such a thing exists.
...laser etch
Will modeling enamel paint (like tamiya) work?
Yes it will
Nice. Too bad my Hasselblad letters aren't recessed.

Always start with cleaning the background and degrease it with some alcohol....!!
