How Music Became More Relatable | The Rise Of Bedroom Pop
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- I often find myself gravitating towards songs that fall under a vague and misunderstood label, Bedroom Pop (Clairo, still woozy, gus dapperton, mac demarco, rex orange county, steve lacy). My love for this genre is shared with thousands of others, and I think I know why. It’s not everyday you discover an independent artist that has their own established authentic style. Completed with a sound so psychedelic and catchy. Because of the internet music has achieved a new level of accessibility. Prior to the internet it was much harder to access older more obscure music and even more difficult to make a name for yourself. But now virtually any song or genre is available at the push of a button. The youth of today experience an unprecedented level of diversity in music and as a result we have so many up and coming artists with wild and refreshingly original musical motifs and production styles which often harken back to and completely blend genres from the past. Heightened musical accessibility has created so many fresh independent artists that really push the envelope and propel their respective genres forward while at the same time paying homage to their predecessors.
Bedroom Pop is the off kilter result of the accessibility that has been granted to our generation, a tangible by product and poignant example of how drastically the internet has affected music in general. But what is Bedroom Pop, and will it even last? Independent music has been a rare phenomenon until recently. Outside of the mainstream genres of Rock, Pop, R&B, Hiphop, there has been many small obscure subgenres, typically these subgenres will experience a short life. From cowpunk to toytown techno, there are a numerous list of genres that fail to make an impact on music as a whole. Although occasionally a relatively small subgenre has the ability to influence new musical trends. From the ethereal otherworldly reverb with punchy offbeat synth leads in shoegaze and dream pop to the nostalgically inviting fuzziness and constant laid back tempo in lofi, to the abundance of reverb that creates psychedelic and offbeat atmospheric soundscapes. Bedroom pop definitely has common and uniting traits just like every other genre but because of its inherently grassroots nature the genre has an unmistakably diverse cast of characters, each injecting their own flair creating an extremely versatile sonic environment.

This video was a long time coming. Bedroom Pop is a controversial topic, but ultimately is an important sound that represents the internet age.

FUCK YOU AND FUCK YOUR FUCKING SPAGHETTI
I definitely think bedroom pop is super similar to garage rock with the armature tone and under produced sound is very similar to is this it.
My band and I make music all on my iPhone we would appreciate opinions :)
Where would someone like grimes fit into this?
Bruh listen to Lucas arlie
When you thought your music taste was quirky and unique but really just the new upcoming pop
v e n d e t t a its okay just go on youtube and find songs there are some really good ones. like luv bug by wassup rocker or listen to some of the artists on here friends like cuco has kwe$t and he has good music also
v e n d e t t a i hope that makes sense
Do you know that pop actually means populat and it's not actually a genre
Hey honestly, these numbers are nothing compared to most mainstream genres. We’ll still be turning heads when our playlists come on for a while
And what's wrong with pop
1. feel depressed
2. Isolate yourself in your room
3. reminisce about the good times
4. cry and write a song
Steal Imaginary Ambition memes.
kam _ yes
Rinse and repeat.
Yes
wait i can do that
You snuck him in like 15 times, but never actually said his name- Cuco
jay girl i really thought i was the only one that noticed...
I also thought the same thing
I was just thinking that too bru
My king ty
He did show his face with his name under it
Take a shot every time he says “quirky” when describing clairo
dead
she ain't even quirky she's a fucking indsutry plant
African_Child _Labour_Worker seriously, it kinda rubs me the wrong way how the video totally ignores this and even talks about how grassroots, amateurish, and diy clairo is
Amelie Slater i looooooooovvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeee clairo
It makes me feel whiter than bleach lol
you're naming all these people I've been listening to without even knowing what bedroom pop is, great video
JakeTeachesUke dude please listen to dreams Adrift by Julius Richard
Same
JakeTeachesUke sameee 😂
@@fargothbosmer2059 I'm into it, thanks man
JakeTeachesUke guys listen to bedroom, their grow album is amazinggggggg
What makes me laugh is the fact people are sad over the fact that their music isn’t “quirky” anymore. You should be happy more people listen to your kind of music. Also isn’t it kinda selfish to hope not a lot of people listen to a certain artist, even though that artist is trying to get noticed.
honestly.... a lot of people only give value to stuff they "like" bc it's "niche" but that's so elitist and wack,
Exactly. Kinda what pisses me off about cavetown’s fanbase, you’ll find hundreds of gacha girls crying over the fact that he “iSnT ouR liTTlE sEcRet AnYmOre”
lemoncake - not gacha girls, probably people who have an aesthetic pfp or a pfp of those girls with their hands over their faces in black and white. You know the type
Kottonkandy09 That too, I find that a portion of cavetown fans are gacha girls as well. But really anyone can be the type to not want an artist to be known.
lemoncake i DEFINITELY used to be the person who would selfishly want an artist to “stay unknown”
Then I realized, if I was the song artist, I would want to be known. Imagine earning money off your passions like that? I could only dream!
So yeah. People gotta stop saying that they want an artist to be their little secret.
Ohhh so that’s been the music I’ve been listening to this whole time.
Kookie Sun lol, right! Love it tho
Literally my instant reaction
I thought it was indie

How can I know every artist/band in this video without knowing the genre? Thought it was Indie pop/rock/lo-fi ish lol
I was the same for a while
Doco Btw great video man! All your videos are topics I’m interested in! Especially enjoyed the Oliver Tree one! Keep em coming:)
Lol thats exactly the definition of bedroom pop like bedroom pop is just a label
It is but now theres so much that thats kinda a long name
Same, pal, sameeee
>songs with an amateur charm
>home made
>free from the mold of music
yeah, that’s called indie
Lil Piplup Bedroom pop is just the modern 21st century name for indie pop. As the narrator explains, the internet is heavily responsible for these artists in a way that it was not previously. People can form established bands, producing music in their own bedrooms
thats also punk, black metal, and cloud rap tf ya on
wouldn't that go under the lofi/diy music umbrella?
Indie doesn’t describe musical qualities. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is technically indie since they publish their music through their own record label, but I don’t think anyone would ever call even their earliest albums “bedroom pop.”
@??? lofi just means low fidelity...it was around loooooong before "beats"
Bedroom pop is amazing. It makes me want to enjoy my youth while also making me nostalgic.
i love the way you described it i really feel the same
Kristina Asia wow the description!!! UGHHH RELATABLE
Yessss!
Kristina Asia wow you really hit the nail on the head right there
There it is. Bedroom pop summed up.
... I thought it was just indie

Indie usually has more of a rock or folk twist to it
U-20 Indie
i'm not cyborg what’s that?
@@andymiller9508 under 20 indie, it's for teenagers except DeMarco.
listen to these people if u wanna feel like ur different but ur really just listening to mainstream indie music
LOL
you say that like it's a bad thing, shouldn't people just listen too what they want? I know I do. I don't care if its popular or not.
you sound just as quirky tbh
Cynthia Rapp LMAFOOO
August Christian Langager I think she was trying to say that some people listen to this type of music to feel quirky and different but they don’t know that it’s actually mainstream🤷🏻♀️ (this isn’t me tho I just listen to whatever sounds good to me)
how come nobody is talking about peach pit??
Ikr
They are soooooooooo good
Fr tho
yes !!!
although i feel like they lean more towards soft indie rock
Mac DeMarco is the Kanye of the indie scene, his influence is undeniable and his music transcends his early listeners as young people also love his music. Similar to Kanye someone who’s influence can be seen though out all hiphop and music although being a decade old still being heard by young people
andrew perez I agree, I have started makeing my first album because of both him and Peach Pit. The vocals of Peach Pit and guitar of Mac just moved me to a creative high that’s lasted for weeks
except kanye thinks God left the world in his hands. And mac is laid back
I always thought it was Cuco for some reason
Dao Yang hell no not even close he like the rest of those fakes
andrew perez he’s not he’s new to these

Trey Windham YES
steve is my everything ✨
6:37 Mac demarco wanted his name to appear twice so he took the wallows spot
The Asian boys yessss wallowssss
i understand why'd he do that. This video seems super hard to make, bro. The whole month of april, i was also very existential to what indie rly is and now that i finally understand everything more clearly cause of this video, great job to this guy for helping me understand indie (a.k.a. this subgenre) better! it's fine he made a mistake there, this video is phenomenal!!! (and yea, so is mac demarco)

When still woozy was still a smaller artist, it was his birthday and I dmed him, and he replied with a thank u :)
Raiza Rojas aw this is cute
I love still.woozy hes so sweet!
Raiza Rojas ok
He was my #1 artist of 2019!!!
Raiza Rojas wait he must do this a lot because same. And got to meet him last year after a show and he was so nice
i remember seeing clairo's flaming hot cheetos song and instantly adding it. I did not think it was part of something new.
I am actually suprised that bedroom pop is a genre, I thought it was just indie, but on your own. I am very happy that people like steve lacy and clairo are popping off
steve lacy is only 19 and so talented, I don't understand
Chad Thundercock indie is supposed to be on your own but lately it’s not
Lmao Clairo completely the opposite of “indie”
Irving disagree. she writes and often produces her own music. indie can also mean auteur in that she is in complete control of her output.
George Kearney not knocking her “talent” but to say she got to where she is now all by herself is wrong. Her dad is a marketing executive who has various connections to the music industry. She’s a plant lol
This Video was edited so f ing well
Trueee. But the labeling mistake at 6:37 is killing me
We need a bedroom pop music festival ASAP!
You’ve got camp flog gnaw my guy
tropicalia!!
Itzel Mora it should be held in a bedroom👹
Some people called it 'indie festival'
Tropicalla most of these artists have been there !
I thought this was just called “Instagram edit music”

We can be friends bro, you got minecraft?
Nah everyone has their own music taste
i listen to death grips yeah ok i feel you
izanagee I do what do you play on?
I listened to every single one of these artist without knowing the name of this genre. I thought is was like indie r&b or sum.
i would just like to take a moment to pay my respects to hers, one of my favorite bedroom pop groups. pretty recently both of the members, stephen fitzpatrick and audun laading, passed away in a car crash on a tour. rip hers. your music will forever be cherished.💕
I personally see an artistic renaissance for this society in the near future and I think the freedom of bedroom pop is a testament to that.
naw what, music has been like this
So glad you included Cuco. That guys psychedelic music is 👌
my bby, cuco, deserves more recognition 😔💞
This guy he’s very overrated now and hasn’t put anything good out in awhile. Apart from Hydrocodone
Cristian Reyes he was in an accident in october so that kinda explains it
@BorrowedCoast yeah, wish he mentioned him by name. it's still nice to see him recognized at least

The quality and recent consistency of your videos is absolutely insane, keep up the amazing work. Not only are your edits and production value out of this world, but your analysis and research for these videos are incredible as well. The vocabulary, script writing, and “synthesization” of the topics are amazing and better than some big network TV shows.
I appreciate you so much
This whole time I was listening to something called “bedroom pop”
We need to preserve this genre before pop culture takes hold
It already did u dumb fuck
If you know about it and it's not from your hometown.....pop culture already took hold
i listen to half of the artists on the thumbnail
Asian Oof same
How did y’all forget The King of bedroom pop
Conan Gray???
- hollybug - not the king but definitely a prince 🤴🏻
Almost a Duke nowhere near the king
- hollybug - hes more indie pop / sad pop especially with his new music, nkt bedroom pop
rex is the king

i hope this becomes the genre of 2020s anything over mumble rap
Jake C nah
i dont want it to get bigger than it already has :(
please no
mehhhh. bedroom pop is kinda mediocre. i want more alternative, psych rock, and shoegaze to make a comeback tho. cause yea mumble rap is cool but theres a lil too much rn. need something new.

Crumb is great
the video of crumb - locket is sooo trippy
i remember listening to clairo around the time that bubblegum first came out on youtube, and finding cuco through lover is a day back in 2017. crazy how far they’ve come
The number of people i recognized in the description makes me disappointed in myself but now i know what genre i dig
the fact that no one has mentioned EDEN is a crime
Bro I never knew the name of this type of music and just kept calling it indie
That's because it is indie.
it is indie pop
Jamie you’re right, it’s a religion
Jamie indie is a genre look it up
Jamie ok
Are you aware of Yellow days? (Asuming you are) what genre would he end up at? Bedroom pop as well or something else?
Jazz fusion maybe? His sound is similiar to King Krule, not bedroom pop at all
id say psychedelic pop
Jasper Bones?
@@Oscar-ue5yc I'd say with my limited knowledge that his music sounds the most like bedroom pop.
Lego Man 12345 12345 omg I freaking love him
Bedroom pop and indie music are the reason why I still have faith in modern music
Soundcloud mumble rap was a tipping point for me in 2018 "talentless ppl making money for mumbling noises" but now that bedroom pop is slowly growing I can now say my faith is restored
P.s I love: Dayglow, wallows and clairo sm
Soundcloud rap, clout rap, mumble rap, emo rap are dead in mainstream
Here comes the rock is great rap is bad type of people mumble rap is good you fucktard
RIP Her's one of great bedroom pop that should be launched into stardom
Joe Andaru hers is so underrated which is so annoying because they’re so amazing
They got launched through the windshield if that counts
were they bedroom pop though?
Johnny Belle no they’re more contemporary/ alternative but still they’re amazing
@@reece2217 oh yes of course, they were so cool!! the first song i heard by them was harvey, and it was when i was lying in bed at around 1am listening to BBC Radio 1.
also @JonathanStewart, that was dark haha
I always called this indie pop (to separate it from alt rock), but bedroom pop is a nice name
“Gone are the days when artists had to play by the books and make bland, inoffensive music to get a substantial following.” This makes me happy.
okay now i have a title for my taste, due to me knowing EVERYONE in this video, even immediately knowing what songs were being played
“I’m not like the other people at my school”
I wear slip on vanz and have baby blue jeans on. I'm offended.
Everyone wants to be different and it’s for that reason they’re all the same.
i feel like steve lacy (the one in the middle of the thumbnail) is more of a alternative r&b artist but i understand where you’re coming from
Bedroom pop features a unique blend of shoegaze, hip hop, grunge and new wave music.
Ya forgot jazz! :(
KingWIgz 1 and r&b
Mac demarco is so much more than “bedroom pop” he is a folk legend and musical genius
Hey to everyone sad about finding out we listen to the same music, it’s okay to be like other people it’s not bad it’s happy ! People like good music just like you being “unique” is cool but remember everyone is in their own way
brenna weaver tbh im kinda relieved i can be in a group with amazing music taste i get lonely its hard to fined people who like the same music in my school and just in my whole life
It’s so difficult to give genre names to artists now cuz many of them have SUCH unique, mixed-of-many genres sound, idk. But great video dude ;)
Who else knew almost every artist he mentioned
I know right 😂
this has been my music taste for like 4-5 years now but didn’t even know it was called bedroom pop lmao
This is more of an aesthetic rather than a genre I think
Like the 00's "indie" or 80's new wave
It's a contrived industry term and an insult to actual DIY bedroom producers.
Frankie Frankie Why do you think that about 80s new wave?
Please explain the difference and how you can differentiate a genre between anesthetic. Rock is a genre. Couldnt it also be considered an anesthetic?
Legit. To me bedroom pop is small recording projects that sometimes go on your but never sell out. It's authentic and underground and lofi and simple
Now when someone asks "what music do you listen to?" I can finally actually give an answer
mac demarco is not bedroom pop he’s been around for way longer than all these other artists
violeta . This. Also you should name R Stevie Moore, one of the gramps of “bedroom pop”
violeta . He’s way better too
Dude most of these I remember like around 2016 like I only started listening to mac demarco 2018
@@mariaserrano2953 he's been making music since like 2009 (even before)

Doco 100% your going to make it Popular
Everyone has forgotten about "Look Mom, I'm on TV", an absolute legend who is SO underrated
Mac ain't bedroom pop. Even though he records in his bedroom.
No, but with songs like chamber of reflection or another one he definitely has influenced the genre
The consistent use of jazz chords, dry drums and chorus pedals is a staple of a certain flavour of Bedroom-Pop, and one that Mac embodies quite blatantly.
If we’re being honest, the ‘bedroom-based production’ part isn’t nearly as important a trait as the sonic characteristics and visual aesthetics of the genre.
Andre 3st yeah and I was glad he made the distinction in the video
founding father?
@@Floral_Green The bedroom pop style is mostly based on the independent DIY nature of the music. Mac has been making music professionally for yaers and is signed to a major lable.

Here’s two band worth listening to
-The Marías
-Men I Trust
These are my two favorite bands and they’re amazing feel free to take a listen
yes their both AMAZING over the moon by marias is the best
@@Emma-wm5ji Yess
AWH YES
The Maria’s are so good it hurts. I need more music from them. Ruthless and over the moon are two of the best produced and written songs I’ve ever heard
David Martinez also really digging men I trust. Dope ass recommendation
I like how you say these artists are independent and then have copyright claims on behalf of the record labels on your video.
Because 'bedroom pop' is a contrived industry buzzword.
@@joshuatxuk Preach, i'll be doing a video on this soon hopefully.
The point of the video is that because of the internet individuals can gain an audience by just posting their songs on soundcloud and other accessible platforms. Yes there are industry plants, yes the music can sound similar and repetitive, but isn't that true for every genre. Obviously as an artist becomes popular an artist will typically sign with a label. And there is nothing wrong with that.
Appreciate your and similar opinions though.
The editing in this is so smooth and eye appealing, definitely dig your editing style
Who else looks though thelazylazyme and kegz ?
David Dean Burkhart is a really good channel too
Im cyborg but thats ok is also good, but doesn't only upload bedroom pop
And theworsttaste
evergreen and nice guys are really good too
properyarn and clouddrops are gr8 too
Mac is not bedroom pop, not everything that is indie falls under this genre
Thank you
Karen Cow amen.
yeh. i was wondering why Mac DeMarco was put with people like rex, clairo and boy pablo. Wasn't he a bit before this all started to come up?
@@johnnybelle2686 Yes! but also Mac's style is closer to indie rock or dream pop, nothing to do with bedroom pop
i don’t think he’s being called bedroom pop, he referred to him as a “pioneer” as in like paving the way FOR bedroom pop
Literally all my favorite artists in one clickbait
You did not just use the word quirky legitimately
hen hen this whole genre and fanbase kinda makes me puke
Mr. Hasin why
Lucas for starters they can’t even distinguish pop music. They’ve just been calling it indie as if indie is a genre
Mr. Hasin Just let people like what they like. Stop being bitter.
How else would you use it?
