This is my top favorite PSB song. I cannot listen to the bit that goes "I'd survive with only memories, if I could change the way I feel, but I want more than only memories, a human touch to make them real" without breaking down in tears. It speaks so much to me. The most emotional lyrics in their whole brilliant career. Kudos to the PSB.
One thing I love about Pet Shop Boys is lots of their songs have sad/deep/introspective lyrics but the instrumental is happy/dancing. This one is a very good example. The contradiction between the lyrics and the instrumental is fascinating. Also for me it sounds like there are two songs happening here: the "music" (dancing, happy, but with a sadness touch) and the lyrics (full sad). You can also see the same energy in Left To My Own Devices, Always On My Mind or even in Domino Dancing, just to name a few.
@@Itsyourgirl_Zeleyna Depeche Mode beats out Abba for me! Only reason is Abba was a little before my time. But my Boys & Madonna are 1000% me top 2!! 3rd is not set in stone for me? Lol
Please take your time and listen to it again, the second time is even more intensive. The synths in the middle of the song are just heart breaking, I'm living this song not just listen to it...
Oh boy! You're in for a treat if you start digging up in the PSB catalogue. Wait until you listen to Being Boring, I get along, King's Cross, You only tell me you love me when you're drunk... Just to name a few. Love your reaction. Hope you keep reacting to PSB! xx
While their masterpiece was "Behavior", the Pet Shop Boys continued and continues to have amazing songs like "The Way It Used To Be" and "The King Of Rome". Neil is such a talented writer and singer and just imbues his songs with so much sadness and hope. He's very subtle, and as a result, it's so much more effective. The heartache, the sense of loss, it's all so much more real because he doesn't try to make it melodramatic or over the top. "Being Boring" will probably always be my favorite PSB song, but this is a very close second, and just listening to it makes me tear up.
One of my favourite songs from PSB's "Yes" album! It is an intense emotional ride lyrically, vocally and production wise. I cannot listen to this song without the tears falling because I totally relate to "The Way It Used To Be" having experienced looking back on a significant romantic break up. It reminds me of the PSB's single "I Don't You What You Want (But I Can Give It Anymore)" which speaks of the romantic break up in progress.
I'm so glad to see someone reviewing newer PSB songs. They've only improved since their early days. Check out their new song called "Leaving" from 2012. This song helped me deal with the loss of my mother then a friend of mine's mother died a couple years later and I told her to listen to this song because she was having a hard time dealing with the loss. She told me she still has to listen to the song when a wave of sadness comes back.
OMG OMG My Boys!!! Thank you for doing this!!! So underrated they are!! But still putting out music since their beginning! You can expect a new PSB album at least every 2-3 years!! Thanks Dereck!!
With PSB there is so much to react ... It is a band with a long and successful career and they have been an influence for many artists. Particularly this song is one of the best on the album and is also one of the favorites of all the diacography of this band
I have been a fan of pet shop boys since 1984 and this by far the greatest song they've ever done classic, Neil's vocals are so heartbreaking just beautiful I'm sure many of us can relate to this gem.
The pet shop boys are the best band from 80 which have pass through the years with the same sound ... they will never been updated . My favorite band . And the last album is so fabulous .
Derek would probably be a blast to watch dance to this song. You know the guy jamming alone. Everyone going he is all deep into it. It just proves you are totally feeling it and knowing what it's all about :)
Never heard this song before but love it!!! I've been a fan of theirs since the 80s so how have I never heard this?!!! You are so right, it has big ABBA vibes. I'll have to check out the album this is from.
Such an exquisite song ~ love your reaction. It’s a pure LOVE song that rips your heart apart with tear filled synths and the promise of unrequited love coming true. Melt my heart. ❤️
What a lovely song it is. I can hear it over and over again. I love it that you are reacting to newer stuff by PSB because there are so many great songs from the last years. You should definitely react to “Burn” from their album SUPER.
Hey Derek :) You should listen to the complete version of this on the album with the intro and the longer outri.. Masterpiece ! So much sadness in this, so much nostalgia.
Dereck, this album, Yes, is incredible. The production is astounding. I love The Way It Used To Be. Others to check out: Love Etc., All Over The World, King of Rome, and the astonishing Legacy. PSB's are one of my absolute favorites, thanks for giving them the attention they deserve!
Thnx for the reaction! It's amazing you're still discovering it now. The tune's been really one of favourites among us - petheads since it came out! Of course you jumped the whole 90s period and almost fully the 00s, but if you really wanna feel the PSB sound update for the 21st century, go and check out Stuart Price produced PSB music. Starting with the 2013's album Electric! Cheers!
Dereck ! I really like your show ! Unfortunately i'm.struggling a bit financially ... but would have liked to support your channel ! Anyways , just wanted to say , i think you're doing a GREAT JOB ! ... WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO DO A REVIEW of " It's Alright "... the long Maxi version to be found on their introspective album... you WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED ! ... Dereck , i love your kindness and soft heart ! ❤
You need to react to British band, Saint Etienne, so many great pop/dance songs. Favourites of mine are Motorway, who do you think you are?, Hobert Paving, He's On The Phone, Tonight. Sooooo many great band.
Yes is a great modern album by PSB, as good as any. This about the time BBC1 stopped playing them, which is too bad because "Love, etc." should have been a huge hit. This song is a masterpiece as is "The King of Rome." Among their best work for sure. I don't see this song as a single, but it is just sublime. "Did you see me coming" and "Pandemonium" are also good songs.
From 2010 you should watch their 10 minute performance from The Brits awards show where they were getting a lifetime achievement award. It has Lady Gaga and Brandon Flowers guesting.
Big PSB fan and brought up in the 80’s it’s almost impossible to cover/capture all the incredible bands that made a deep imprint in many with me. I’d suggest another band and a few songs by Simple Minds, Sometime, somewhere in summertime..., Big Sleep, Promised you a miracle etc. etc. They were definitely one of the big ones imo. Keep up the good work! It’s nice to see someone breaking down and looking at the different layers of the songs.
Great song by my favourite band. Please react to Love Is A Catastrophe off their massively underrated and misunderstood 2002 album Release. Heartbreaking song and a very different arrangement for them.
It does remind a little of " THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME " ... By ABBA. Has that same vibe and tempo. If you liked this then please react to " RENT " ... beautiful song by the Pet Shop Boys
This song really hits me hard ; it could of been written by me ; the lyrics are spot on : reminds me of the love of my life but sadly it wasn’t to be ; then seeing them again thousands of miles away on holiday; 😢
Love PSB but never heard this one! Love it! So layered it reminds me of something like Mozart for some reason, not sure why, going to have to think on that one. PSB are Masters of Storytelling.
The people who stopped listening to this duet after "It's a Sin" are really wrong. PSB has really improved over time. This title is of a beauty and a heady poetry. Yes there are synths, yes it's pop, but above all it's a very great song. Deep, unsettling. In my top 10 songs from PSB
My goodness, the relatable aspect of this song, as I have experienced a similar unexpected chance meeting with an "Ex" a couple years ago, and the nostalgic memories flooding alongside the newness of inevitable change within the anachronistic moment of contact - somehow purely alluring, an added mystery of life of which this person has built without me; engaged/married? Single? Children? Separated/divorced, etcetera! These questions rush through like an electric storm of synaptic transmissions overwhelming the brain. Yet, the only thing on my mind, which could be easily dusted away by any answer based in this individual's current reality... Why did it not work? Of course, any such inquiry probably could be answered if I was in a stable, isolated framework of alone time once again, however the galvanization of erstwhile pleasures, sentimentality, and admitted outright lust strongly clouded my perception at that particular point in time, like a strange drug. Yet, nothing transpired but a few awkward words, and another type of mundane goodbye. Life is usually like this I suppose... Thanks for your time. Wonderful reaction/review Dereck. Thank you.
Trivia: the album "Yes" would have entered the UK album charts at no1 but the charts sales tracking system missed counting 4000 sales. Thus it entered at no4.
I do have a suggestion: "Vocal" off their 2013 masterpiece album Electric. And "The Pop Kids" and "Say it To Me" from the fantastic 2016 album "Super."
Not PSB- related, but since you like Freestyle, you should definitely check out an old '87 Freestyle gem, "Silent Morning" by Noel. Noel is Noel Pagan, and he is still performing 80's nostalgia and Freestyle shows.
Pet Shop Boys have been so consistent over the years. I love their latest stuff as much as their early stuff.
One of the pet shop boys best song ever
Listening to this song makes me cry nowasi have just lost my youngest brother just aged 40 I wish it was the way it used to be
what a masterpiece, this song is so powerful.
One of my favourite Pet Shop Boys songs. The lyrics and musical composition take you on a melancholy journey
This is my top favorite PSB song. I cannot listen to the bit that goes "I'd survive with only memories, if I could change the way I feel, but I want more than only memories, a human touch to make them real" without breaking down in tears. Great choice! Not a well-known track but a diamond on a rather good album.
Yes it's my favourite album -- and I started with Please!

This is, together with "Being boring" my favorite Pet shop boys song. Just beautiful!
Their most beautifully written and composed track with haunting lyrics. A definite song choice for my funeral.
My life has been enhanced by my musical holy trinity - Abba, Madonna and Pet Shop Boys. I’m glad you’re enjoying all three.
WOW I so agree!!
That’s a very interesting trio- for me it was pSB, A-ha and Depeche Mode

@@Itsyourgirl_Zeleyna Also a great trio of acts Nid
Absolutely love this song, probably my favourite from this album along with 'King of Rome'.
The standout track that I think wasn't even released as a single... that proves how talented psb are
Please take your time and listen to it again, the second time is even more intensive. The synths in the middle of the song are just heart breaking, I'm living this song not just listen to it...
By the way, the Pet Shop Boys did write a song for Tina Turner which she recorded, it's called Confidential
@@tommyeriksson6044 Me too!
I forgot about that.
She was disappointed, she wanted an it's a sin kind of song.

Yes. That was exactly what I was looking for. Everyone else seems to do the dame 5 songs. I LOVE PSB.
Leaving is definitely more than a song

Such a beautiful song, really should have been a single.
Yes, the album from where this song is taken, is probably my favourite album of theirs from the 2000's. Full of great pop-songs!
Quizas la mejor cancion de ellos ❤❤❤
The special edition CD comes with some incredible mixes, you would love them.
Thanks for reacting to this. Happy you loved it

Typical Pet Shop Boys classic sound. So love those guys!

La mejor canción de Yes y tal vez una de las mejores de todo 2009!
“Don't give me all your love and pain.
