Is marijuana bad for your brain? - Anees Bahji

- Explore how marijuana’s two main active compounds, THC and CBD, affect your brain and body, and what risk factors to watch out for.
--
In 1970, marijuana was classified as a schedule 1 drug in the United States: the strictest designation possible, meaning it was completely illegal and had no recognized medical uses. Today, marijuana’s therapeutic benefits are widely acknowledged, but a growing recognition for its medical value doesn’t answer the question: is recreational marijuana use bad for your brain? Anees Bahji investigates.

I think the important thing to remember is that with weed your personal experience isn't the only experience, I've seen plenty talking about how weed makes them feel so much better while others say it was the worst thing they ever did. Because of how weed affects everyone differently you have to remember that both experiences are just as valid. If your gonna try weed start small and remember that each person is gonna have a different experience.
yeah we are already at different brain chemistry levels, or might even be on scripts
I must slightly disagree with the original post.
From my experience, the ultra majority of people who have had "bad experiences" just weren't educated enough on what cannabis does. Cannabis aims to expand your mind, and it does so by elevating your vibration, which physicaly translate into oxygenating your cells more, which it does by making your heart pump more.
People who are not aware of that will freak out instead of feeling safe. And since cannabis can increase focus, they will focus on their fear, thinking something bad is happening.
So, it not not linked with genetics or individual chemistry in the vast majority of cases.
That being said, of course that some pre-existing psychological conditions can cause problems. But 98% of the "bad trips" experience I've heard were just what I explained.
Like booze only much more extreme.

Weed psychosis isn't too common. In fact it's quite rare
As someone with ptsd, I have serious issues with getting to sleep. One puff on a pen and it’s like someone letting the air out of a balloon.
I can relax and my mind stops racing. I can feel my body physically unclench itself and I get the best sleep ever. The next day I am way better and it’s less likely I’ll suffer an anxiety attack.
@Andrei Lacerda Yes! It’s just blissful blankness.
That's great, but it doesn't help the case of recreational use, if that's what you meant to do by this comment. What you did doesn't exactly count as recreational use, does it?
When used by someone with a disorder like PTSD, and with the correct amount, that's what medical/therapeutic marijuana is. But what benefit would it have for someone with no PTSD?
@FlochBasedKing thats because weed reduces the REM sleep, rapid eye movement, its a state you are into the deepest sleep
@@jt9300 theoretically or legally it does count as recreational use tho. Just the effects of it happened to be useful in their case. I'm no expert on marijuana or psychology but personally it has helped me a lot, it makes me believe that there's much more important things to think or worry about than the things I do in daily life, which is comforting. Hence a good night's sleep with less chances of having a anxious, stressful and bad day the next day. I'm sure many people can relate to it
I've smoked weed since I was a kid. When I first began to consume marijuana, I was instantly hooked and 12 years later I still do smoke. During adolescence stages, I found myself irrational, emotional, lots of ups and downs. It was due to the fact that I was a very young man I didn't know anything about anything... I wasn't mindful or consciously alert. I'd highly recommend for people to wait until they are a little older and stable before the smoke. It's more enjoyable when you understand what you're doing in depth whereas before you were a blind young guy/girl just trying to solve the puzzle. It's almost like being a connoisseur of Wines, the more you understand the more enjoyment you'll get from receiving something of high quality. There's nothing wrong with smoking, just don't let it consume you and have your life revolve around ADDICTION. Set a schedule do your day routine and the last hour or two before bed just take a small puff or two and enjoy those moments. Use it as a self rewarding mechanism not an addictive pleasure that you constantly need to have. If you don't or can't discipline yourself INSIDE AND OUT, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DONT SMOKE OR DRINK.
I've always been curious with people's relationship with weed.
You got it down to a T. I started smoking when I was 12 in middle school which went on in my high school years. It's weird for me because I had smoked frequently for 4 years at that time then in 11th grade I stopped because I noticed my grades going down. It wasn't that hard to stop really. Only noticeable effects for me were mood swings but besides that not bad. I made a promise (kinda lame) that I would start smoking again after I graduate that's if I still wanna do it. 2 years pass I'm 18 and i don't feel like smoking and decide not to smoke for like another 2 or 3 years until like 2020 I started again. Now I smoke everyday after work, full time job, tough work, 5am everyday. Routine is important. I almost have a set time for it and time my day accordingly. After work I get high around 6 that way I sober up by around 9 then pass out at 11. For me, my relationship with weed besides getting high, it's obviously relaxing, feels good and everything. But me it's like you said I'm a connoisseur I love the process and action leading up to the smoke aswell as the smoking experience. The look smell and taste of the buds man it's awesome. I feel like in order to partake its best when you have have a certain mindset and knowledge about your self like I don't have addictive tendencies. I Don't drink alcohol really at all don't even drink coffee no cigarettes none of that, no energy drinks or nothing. Just weed. I also think about if its a good time to smoke up like if I have to drive in an hour then maybe no or if I have some work to do maybe not so much it just depends everyone's different of course.
Both very good perspectives.
After smoking for 20+ years...I feel better and sleep better and function better when I quit. Weed is absolutely addictive.
Wise words Sir, could not have said it better myself
You sound like the only options were to smoke weed either daily or not at all. But there are many people who just enjoy it from time to time. Like once a month or a few times per year. As for me I see it like going on an adventure, a trip. A refreshing experience, but also something special and precious, something I don't have every day. And I prefer to get high when I'm in company with somebody I like a lot.
And I totally agree you shouldn't do it when you're too young. Certainly not

Honestly I might get hate for saying this but whatever, I’m a 15 year old I tried getting High for the first time just to try it little did I know me just “trying it” would lead to me smoking almost everyday for 9 months straight. If I could go back I definitely wouldn’t take the edible that got me high that day, People try to glorify weed saying things like it’s healthy and isn’t addictive which just isn’t true and the only reason people say things like this is bc there in denial about being addicted to something. trust me I was literally that guy until I started having memory problems and brain fog. I just hope this reaches someone who needs to hear this and stops them from starting something they will eventually regret. Weed isn’t the worst thing in the world but it also isn’t the best, if your gonna smoke please do it in moderation for your own benefit, if I could go back I wouldn’t have even smoked at all. At first you feel so good whenever you get high and whenever you hear about the negatives of what your doing to yourself you feel like that stuff won’t happen to you until it does. And when it does it happens fast suddenly getting High goes from being fun to something you need everyday to even wanna eat food or sleep . I’m trying to quit wish me luck.

Funny thing is is that they've done videos on myths before lol
N S.C what am I missing? It doesn’t seem informative to me. To start a video with a misleading point suggesting that it became illegal in the ‘70s. Ironically, that’s about the time the U.S. government allowed one man to grow pot for medical research. Unfortunately, he lived in Alabama... so, the results were underwhelming. There was also research dating back to the ‘70s in several French universities that the U.S. “likely” put the kibosh on.

Im 46 and smoked weed for 30 years, and just tried quitting today for the first time and going good. Feel great. I’ve been reading that, after chronic smoking for this long can disrupt your behaviour. Mine was getting really bad and I didn’t know what was happening to me. I would lose my mind over any little thing. But, I’ve been so calm and relaxed today with not smoking. My mind has done a 180 with cannabis. In my 20’s cannabis was more of a euphoric feeling and helped me relax. Now it’s the complete opposite. I feel like It has turned me into a monster. My best bud since high school smokes more than me, and I see him going through the same thing. My friend and I, our personalities are very similar. It could be related to our personality type or I’ve read the fact that we both started smoking at 16 while our brains were still developing. Studies have shown that this has a negative affect on your brain.

I really liked that you talked about the subject objectively and explained that it can have a side effects. I would like to share my experience. I was using marihuana almost daily and after a while I started to notice that I am escaping from my problems and only want to live in the carefree bubble of marihuana's effects. I started to hate my self for that. Started to think less of me. It didn't change the fact I wanted to smoke again. Then I started to say no to another spliffs like I had enough I don't want more. Few weeks ago when I didn't consumed I star to realize I don't need weed I can function without it. I know I am not really treated yet and there is still a long way of saying no and need for a strong mind but I feel overall more happy and hopeful.
If you're 25 years old and up, have strong family genes and are a mentally healthy person, smoke up all you want.
I believe it helps mentally unhappy people be more happy ... mentally unhappy people should at least try it
@@bilaltariq7819 then you're only in it for the high, you can't even see or imagine the mental health benefits of smoking weed
@@shiddy. yeah but isn't the high a large part of the mental relief you get from weed or other drugs? also the video itself said that if you have genes predisposed to mental illness, the drug induced psychosis might end up being an actual long-term psychosis
mental illness is a broad spectrum. those with depression and schizophrenia are better off with antidepressants, while medical marijuana is already being prescribed in some states and countries for people with anxiety disorder or similar
I had severe anxiety and nightmares after i smokrd it as generally people do with my boyfriend and now i am on using cbd oil which really helps with my anxiety and depression. I would reccomend to use the ones with high CBD percentage ones with low THC percentage marijuana if you really wanna use it for anxiety and depression however ask your doctors first if it is legal in your state

Cerebellum 😂😂😂
Have been diagnosed with ptsd, and bipolar. I have my highs and lows just like the weather and struggle to be balanced in life. I am an extremely nice or mean person but do try to be nice most of the time despite life’s challenges. Yesterday I was on a low and started feeling depressed and began having suicidal thoughts. I was going on a “bad one” about how my life this world sucks. My girlfriend knows how I am and was really trying to cheer me up to no avail and I wanted to just be left alone. But she stayed and I knew I needed to smoke/medicate in this situation when I am literally suicidal. I then went to my bathroom and packed a small bowl of a sativa stain and took one small puff. That is all, I don’t like to get wasted and become the stereotypical pot head as I like to be able to function. Within 30 seconds or less I instantly felt better and began to think of the “bright side” of my life and situation. I didn’t forget my problems, I was fully aware of them but was not overcome by them or my negative emotions. I felt 100% better and then began to talk about my feelings with my girlfriend. A lot of my problems in life are from bad choices and habits I’ve made since a teenager. The past definitely affects the future. But weed in the right dosage and not to be abused can and does help overcome harmful thoughts and feelings, as well as cheers you up and makes you look at life from a positive perspective. That is my experience and opinion.
You should go for indicas in my case, specially landrace and not hybrids, because you wnat your mind to shut up for some time. Sativas are cerebral high.
Indica is more sedative and is counteractive to such neurosis. Search Indian INDICA MARIJUANA SMOOTHIE CALLED BHANG. IT IS A GREAT MEDICINE KNIWN TI CURE MULTIPLE PSYCHOLOGICALS ISSUES.
I just had the same experience! Minus the suicidal thoughts.
Weed for recreational use was just legalized here in Illinois so I decided to purchase some in the form of a vape cartridge after hearing about micro dosing. I had quit using weed about 8 years ago due to anxiety issues, but I told myself this time that I’d “use it and not abuse it”.
I took a huge hit like I used to do in my teens and I started tripping out lol. Next day I tried it again, this time I took a small 1 sec puff and I felt great! I wasn’t over analyzing things and didn’t feel anxious. I just felt like my mood changed and felt very motivated and creative and just positive about life overall.

The first dopamine release of the day will tell the brain to keep doing whatever generated it. Therefore smoking in the morning can increase your risk of addiction.
Edit : The relationship between morning cannabis use and addiction risk is sometimes true, but can depend on individual factors. While the first dopamine release theory applies broadly, cannabis addiction risk involves various factors such as frequency of use, genetics, and mental health. Morning use alone doesn't necessarily heighten addiction risk, but regular use, regardless of the time of day, can contribute to dependence and abuse.
Hmm… that makes sense when thinking about how easy it is to form a habit/addiction to checking mobile/apps in the morning.

Its not necessarily bad for you, it’s definitely way better than most other recreational drugs. The more I smoked, the less I wanted to smoke, so it’s pretty hard to become addicted, I think the worst side effect is just laziness honestly.

weed was basically all positives for me but there was one aspect I really hated and that was that it made me aware of all my deepest insecurities and then I'd feel so ashamed of myself, it just lays you bare so you can see who you really are but provides no solution so you just wallow in your insecurity and low self esteem. It happened pretty often too, I'd be toking and then suddenly go down a thought spiral about my insecurities.
For me, marijuana consumption has been a very positive experience. I only started consuming it (in the form of edibles, I don't smoke it) when I was 25. It has helped me relax and even sparked a huge curiosity in me about the universe and outer space, and I love learning about astronomy while high. I am able to learn and retain all the info, but not only that, it grants me deeper understanding of concepts that while sober don't make as much sense for some reason. That's just my personal experience, I'm sure it's different for everyone.
Started edibles at 25 due to having a stressful long work schedule. Took 3-5 mg at night and it helped me rest. I feel like at first it was balanced to that. Then I experimented taking a little more and a little more. Now I'm scaling back to the original 5 and doing it more sporadically. I really like my time with it
That explains my experience to the t

It starts that way until everything necessary becomes learned and you don’t breach your bubble anymore because you could just simply smoke weed

"You need more to feel the same" is the most common misconception in the drug world. You need more yes, but you don't get the same. If you reach the point where you need to drastically increase how much you take compared to early on - you will find that the high is never as good. This misconception I believe causes the "chase the high" mindset people start following. Overuse of drugs will make their effects weaker/altogether different, and increasing ur dosage won't help much. Don't make the mistakes I did, no matter how tempting, just don't overuse. Enjoy it for a long time occasionally rather than enjoying it for a few months constantly.

For anyone thinking about smoking weed: I was stuck in a bubble and pushed away anyone who even made the slightest comment about me smoking weed. I had no idea I was such a pain to be around and that it had changed my behavior. There was no way for anyone to get me out of it, because I could not see that I was stuck. The only way was to ride it out until it went completely wrong. Losing my friends was the least of my problems compared to the mental health issues weed caused me, and I still have to deal with that 11 years later. It is always good to share the personal downsides of drugs, because the people who say that it is nothing but positive, will scream the loudest and ignore the people spiraling out of control in the process. It is such a big risk for undiagnosed people...which can be anyone. Sure it can have positive effects for certain people, but don't gamble on it. If you or any direct family have mental health issues, than don't just start doing drugs. Take this from someone with schizophrenia and other psychosis related problems triggered because of weed.
Do you have any actual proof that weed causes you to have schizophrenia or did you self diagnose? Because so far there isn’t very much proof that weed causes it.
I have used Weedborn CBD products and have healed without any problems. Now my whole family is healthy.
