Thank your for your interested reaction. I once read a very good detailed commentary that sheds light on the background story of "Daididau". It is by @Julie H. and I would like to quote her here: „Daididau is special to the Kazakh people because not only has it reached folk status but it involves the history of their country. Kazakhstan has only been an independent country for about 28 years. Before that, they were under Soviet Union. So there were times of great struggle and war, famine, persecution and pain there. This song specifically was written by a Kazakh poet and teacher, Magzhan Zhumabayev, who was imprisoned in 1918 for being a supporter of freedom and independence of Kazakhstan. After being imprisoned for a year, he worked for a decade as a poet and teacher and translate of text books into Kazakh. In 1929, he was falsely arrested again as a member of "anti-Soviet Nationalist organization" and a Japanese spy. He pled not guilty. He was imprisoned and sentenced to 10 years. His wife, Zuleyka, traveled to Moscow to be near him. She followed him from prison to prison as they were constantly moving him without notice. Sometimes she would have to search for where they took him and when she found him he'd be bloody from the beatings . During this time he had been told a lie that his wife had left him for another man. Possible that this was part of the demoralization and beatings that he was experiencing. Devastated, he wrote a letter, or a poem if you will, to his wife asking how could she leave him and who now would hear his sorrow. This poem was turned into the song Daididau that we know today. The name Daididau was an affectionate name that he would often call his wife. Ultimately Zuleyka petitioned some of his literary friends to help and they were able to get him released early in 1936, but a year later he was arrested again. This time he was killed in custody and the location of his burial remains unknown. The Historical significance of this story to Kazakhstan and ultimately to Dimash is not only the story of the struggle for the freedom of Kazakh people and unfair persecution. It is also about repression of art and the erasure of a significant Kazakh individual and artist through Soviet oppression. Magzhan's writings were banned for over 50 years and his name was virtually unknown to even the Kazakh people. Many of his works and writings have been lost forever. It wasn't until 1989 when Kazakhstan was moving toward independence that they re-discovered him and realized his tragic persecution and the profound beauty of his poetry. So, Dimash having learned all of this history and being a young patriot, knew at age 15 that he wanted to bring this song Daididau to the world. The world would hear this mans words and his art wouldn't be forgotten anymore. Daididau represents years of struggle under foreign oppression and it now represents the struggle for freedom. It became a national folk song handed down from grandfather to grandson and for years the name of the author withheld. The song represents the heart, the artistry, the past persecution, and the new found freedom of a nation. Dimash's dream was to not only sing song to his whole nation but also to the world. And most specifically, he dreamed since he was 15 years old of singing Daididau in America in large concert in New York. That dream came true for him in December 2019.” Reading about everything this ma, Magzhan Zhumabayev, (and his wife) had to go through and how he still held on to liberal values takes the content of the lyrics to a higher level for me and makes it much more meaningful. Beautiful poetic lyrics, but there is so much tragedy and pain behind it.🥺😣😥💪✍
Thank you for reacting - this is one of my very favourite performances by Dimash; it’s so heartfelt and emotional! What makes it even more remarkable is that his in-ears stopped working right at the beginning of the song (you can see from his hand gestures that he asks for help), and yet he delivers a pitch-perfect performance, regardless …
You were absolutely right. It was a poem. Others have gone into the background of the story. It is very heart breaking poem that became the lyrics turned into a folk song representing the shared pain of oppression of the people at that time. Dimash is usually emotional when singing it. And note the perfect pitch even though both of his in-ear monitors weren’t working and he couldn’t really hear himself well ❤
Dimash knows his dears have learned various lines from his songs, whatever language and he often gets the audience singing along. It was one of his dreams to get people from 60 countries singing some words in Kazakh at his New York concert.
🇲🇽❤️💕🇲🇽❤️💕🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
Thanks for reaction. Behind Daididau is a beautifull but sad true story you should research. There were many in previous political times (when they were under USSR).
The Dombra is kind of the national Instrument of Kazakhstan. Dimash’s grandfather was a famous Dombra player. So he learned to play it from a very young age. Daididau is a very tragic song, when you know how it got created. The writer Zhumabayev was a political prisoner, who loved his wife (he called her Daididau) very much, but couldn’t see her for 5 years. When he got released, they reunited. But that didn’t last long, because they threw him back into prison 1-2 years later, where he then died the next year. 😢 His captors told him that she left him (which wasn’t true) and he put all his pain into this. But this song is just beautiful. Thank you for reacting to it. ❤
Great reaction! Traditional songs are the most beautiful pieces Dimash has. Because he feels them very very deep inside, they are part of his culture, his motherland, his traditions and. Dimash is very proud Kazakh. The instrumentation and attire for this performance are awesome. Love it and every time I watch this video it gives me goosebumps 🥺🎤🔝✨👏👏👏
This was from his Bastau concert. This concert was his first solo concert after performing in The Singer competition in 2017. He has invited about 100 dombra players to this concert, who together with him perform a short instrumental, Adai, before Daididau. That's also very impressive. In case you are interested in the history of this song. This song is very sad and it tells about a very dark time in the history of Kazakhstan, not so long ago. To understand the song, I always advise to take the link from Gloria Wu’s channel as it shows the background story and also has English subtitles. The Kazakh poet and writer Magzhan Zumabayev was sentenced by the Russian regime to 10 years in prison for conspiracy in 1929 and imprisoned. While in custody there, he was falsely (probably more intentionally) told that his wife (her nickname was Daididau) had left him. If I am correctly informed he is said to have written the lines of the song in prison (as a letter to his wife), probably to express his deep sadness and despair over is. Although he was released in 1934, he was arrested again a few months later and was executed 1937. The lyrics of this song are so sad I could cry every time I hear it. It never leaves me unmoved. Even after hearing it so many times. I was at his concert in Düsseldorf in 2022 and he sang this song with us Dears there too. This song is one he always performs in his concerts, plays the Dombra (a Kazakh folk instrument), and asks his Dears to sing along with him in his Kazakh language (he looks like a Kazakh Prince with his traditional clothing). Every Dear knows many of his lyrics in Kazakh and loves to sing his songs with him at his concerts. I find it incredibly impressive and wonderful how a single man manages to bring together so many people from meanwhile 150 different countries and continents with so many different views in politics or religion, with so many different languages in a common group and to celebrate peacefully together and to sing in his own language. You always can see how proud he is of his country and how happy and moved he is when the audience sings with him in his concerts🥰. Greetings and love from Germany👋❤️

Димаш объединяет страны, и сердца. Реакция одинаковая, мы все братья, в космосе, мы песчинки,даже меньше. Давайте держаться друг друга, тогда выживем. Зачемже наши предки боролись за жизнь, чтоб мы ее просрали?
This song is based on a poem by famed poet and patriot Magzhan Zhumabayev. He was arrested as a patriot and told his wife had left him as a form of torture. He was executed never knowing she had not left him.
I think it's more ancient than a sitar. It's a dombra, the national instrument of Kazakhstan. Bravo for catching on. It was written by their greatest national poet when he was sent to Siberia for a court trial. A guard told him a lie that his wife had abandoned him. He did get released from prison and got back to her, but Stalin eventually had him executed.
The song speaks of the composition of Magzhan Zhumabayev, who is considered an exponent of Kazakh literature. When in 1928 he was sent to prison, and later sent to camps in North Karelia, Russia, Zuleikha (wife of Magzan) followed him, no matter where he was taken, she always found him and came to see him everywhere. She went to great lengths to get him released from prison in 1936, even asking the famous writer Maxim Gorky for help. During his prison term, Zhumabayev received the lying news that his wife had abandoned him, in this sense Daididau was written as a lament for the lost love and suffering of the nation. But contrary to what he thought, outside his wife worked hard for his freedom and in 1934 his sentence was reduced and he was finally able to return to the family. Unfortunately, in 1938 he was forcibly taken to the concentration camp and executed.

I love that you opened with a solid "Сәлем"!🥰 The song they are playing on the dombra is a traditional kui called "Adai" (Адай) and is considered one of the more difficult kuis to play. I love the emotion in this song at the end; consider that before his big break his style of performance wasn't widely accepted in Kazakhstan. I don't know if "ridiculed" is the best word, but it had to take a great deal of conviction and self-confidence to retain his own style despite being told to do it differently for so many years. Now. here he is in front of his countrymen and they are celebrating him, singing his own songs back to him, cheering for his success and thanking him for sharing their culture with others. Can you imagine how amazing this moment felt for him, to finally feel like he was appreciated as an artist by his own people? It is so beautiful. And he honors them for their support of him with that deep bow, which kills me every time he does it in a performance. He is so humble, thankful, and respectful.
