"It's really hard to hate anyone/When you know what they've lived through" is pretty much the best creed that I've ever heard in a song. Thank you, Dawes.
Perhaps the most poignant ballad ever composed, a succinct chronicle of the human condition. Taylor Goldsmith is unmatched as today's preeminent American songwriter. This song brings me to tears each time I am blessed to experience it. Best wishes to you and Mandy in your union.
Since my original post, I have listened to this song at least four hundred times and still feel like this is the most profound musical expression ever recorded. The lyric "Punish him for the life he chose / But forgive the past that he did not" is a testament to the conundrum of poetic justice and poetic redemption in the same breath. And in spite of Taylor's genius, Lee's symphonic keys couple with Wylie's and Griffin's perfect and tender underpinnings to elevate this masterpiece into a much greater whole than any of their individual contributions could have ever envisioned. Kudos to Dawes!
I don't know Josh Ritter's pretty good, Tom Waits hasn't put out an album in a while he's off the charts, Dylan rough and rowdy ways had its moments but still overrated. I can't believe I'm saying this I'm saying this but the Lumineers have their moments it's all subjective I do really enjoy Dawes
this song is one of the loveliest tunes, melodies, words, musicianship....I have heard in such a long time. I cannot hear it enough. Thank you. Sincerely.
Dawes is the favorite band in our home as well. The masses won't ever have a clue and the industry peddles filth, but Dawes is the freshest of air. I actually formed a tear in verse two, coupled with it's relative chorus.
I understand that the lyrics are on screen, but they are a challenge to sing along to. So. Here you go. You're welcome [Verse 1] I will do your interview try to explain what I'm going through. Give you something to read into In a million different ways A sick version of telephone starts at the clip of the microphone A game we though we had all outgrown But still everybody plays [Chorus] Ignoring all of the remedies Believing all of the rumours With their endless database I wanna sit with my enemies and say “We should've done this sooner.” While I look them in the face Maybe that will crack the case [Verse 2] I got a friend who's been thinking 'bout Finally kicking her husband out His second life as a talent scout Finally got him caught While she was throwing out all his clothes She heard a voice from beyond the throes “Punish him for the life he chose but forgive the past that he did not.” [Chorus] It's really hard to hate anyone When you know what they've lived through And once they've given you a taste she said “This is for you to overcome But I will always love you” In her perfect state of grace Maybe that will crack the case [Verse 3] Now that we're through with formalities What is it you wanna ask of me? I'll answer open and honestly Whatever that means finding out We occupy somebody else opposing side On the banks of some great divide Two versions of the dream [Chorus] Countless revisions of history trying to tell us the future Between each commercial break I wanna call of the cavalry Declare no winners or losers And forgive our shared mistakes You can pick the time and place Maybe that will crack the case
Dawson Schulenberg I had not thanked you yet. Haha. Thank you very much. It is always appreciated when someone takes the time to do what you did. Thanks.
Yeah man, no problem here's living in the future for you too! [Verse 1] I know all of my exits I am always planning my escape It's the most aggressive symphony Of this collective found pain And the more that you ignore it The more it makes you go insane Just look around It's the battle of the passwords It's the trumpets on the hill It's that constant paranoia It's that final fire drill And if you won't sing the anthem Then go find someone else who will Their crackin' down [Chorus] We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light It may not make it any better I'm just hopin' that it might I'm not talkin' 'bout forever How 'bout just gettin' through the night We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light [Verse 2] I'm always lookin' over shoulders Not knowing what I'm lookin' for Now that the feelin' that someones watching Isn't just a feelin' anymore Now that both sides of the isle Are as good as keepin' score We've crossed our line But there's a madness to the method There's a muckit for the fear It's that dance out on that razor's edge A wolf held by their ears It's the man behind the curtain It's the way of all frontiers Since the dawn of time [Chorus] x2 We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light It may not make it any better I'm just hopin' that it might I'm not talkin' 'bout forever How 'bout just gettin' through the night We're livin' in the future! So shine a little light
this is just fantastic...another great song and really looking forward to the whole album.. verse 2 really brings in the emotions with the characters talking!
I saw him play this live as a new song in Milwaukee. I love this band as much, if not more, than I have loved any band. This song is beautiful. I was so enthralled watching him play it live and solo that I never heard the lyrics. They are, once again, incredible. I do believe this will be my favorite album of 2018 as well. I am very excited for the new album and headlining tour.
This will be one of the songs played at my funeral, along with A Little Bit of Everything. I want to leave this world, with these songs as background music.
These are the most creative lyric videos ever. Plus the vibe of the new album with the visual aesthetic is just perfect. Feel like I’m hacking in Fallout, except this is enjoyable
I grew up with a player piano in our house. My mother refinished it when I was in my 30's. My sister ended up with it in her home and when our mom died in 2016, I dismantled the piano and have made several pieces of furniture from it which will survive through my children. This video flooded me with those thoughts. Thanks.
Dear Daws, Thank you for writing the song! I really love the concept of telling a story as if you were being interviewed. Genius! By the way, I am doing a bunch of interviews to support local businesses after the Corona virus situation affected us all. Can I have your permission to use a clip of your song, "Crack the Case?" Please let me know! Thank you so much!
Thank You 4 this meaning-filled Song , the lyrics surely describe what I only know to call Confirmation Of Spirit. The Phenomena has progressed to here....(9/6/2018). This song grabbed me up on an ad, feeling appreciative 💌
"It's really hard to hate anyone/When you know what they've lived through" is pretty much the best creed that I've ever heard in a song. Thank you, Dawes.
mimesis man, it’s hard to abide that, but it makes things easier to handle. Love this song and try to abide. Much love
I try to think about that, you have to think about how they’ve lived what their life is, it’s a bit sad
this hits so deep. literally my outlook on life has changed.
Logan sounds like you cracked the case

The avett bros were pretty solid across the same timescape
Once again, dawes is gonna shape an era of my life
"punish him for the life he chose, but forgive the past he did not" - Taylor Golden Wordsmith
Best new alt-folk rock in past 10 years. With modern, thoughtful lyrics and beautiful music. I think I've listened to album 50 times in last 5 days.
this song is one of the loveliest tunes, melodies, words, musicianship....I have heard in such a long time. I cannot hear it enough. Thank you. Sincerely.
I've only played this like 20/30 times.
I just discovered this song. And so happy I did. LOVE. BEAUTIFUL.
Just when you think they couldn't get any better... they do. Some of the most tasteful, logical, emotive, wonderful music being made today.
There are a lot of folks in DC who need to hear this song today
Just upvoted pretty much every comment here. Love this band. Love my fellow fans. So much love
This is truly some of your best work. It is really a pleasure to watch (and listen) to you all continue to evolve
What a touching song. Thanks, Dawes! That piano really makes it for me
Another great song from Dawes. They played this last June at the Soundstage in Baltimore. Can't wait for the new album.
My town but didn't know of them at the time😣
The music is just so damn honest!
Christ, are these guys brilliant!
Wow! Thank you for this beautiful song! It broke me up.
This is my jam. I love the call to balance in a time of such division, a reminder that we hold the power to live in peace.
they deserve so much more oh my gosh. all time favorite song
This song has fit into my day like a puzzle piece. I can't stop listening to it.
New Dawes music! Yes!!! I'm really excited for the new album!
This song sounds like it should be in a movie that I watch just because the soundtrack is good
I'm loving how this seemingly meaningless piece of machinery is basically a Dawes update and track listing for the new album. Very subtle.
Our all time favorite band!!!
Dawes is the favorite band in our home as well. The masses won't ever have a clue and the industry peddles filth, but Dawes is the freshest of air. I actually formed a tear in verse two, coupled with it's relative chorus.
This song hooks me every time. The lyrics mean new things with each listen.
Amazing is all I can say! Thank you for this song!
I understand that the lyrics are on screen, but they are a challenge to sing along to. So. Here you go. You're welcome
[Verse 1]
I will do your interview
try to explain what I'm going through.
Give you something to read into
In a million different ways
A sick version of telephone
starts at the clip of the microphone
A game we though we had all outgrown
But still everybody plays
[Chorus]
Ignoring all of the remedies
Believing all of the rumours
With their endless database
I wanna sit with my enemies and say
“We should've done this sooner.”
While I look them in the face
Maybe that will crack the case
[Verse 2]
I got a friend who's been thinking 'bout
Finally kicking her husband out
His second life as a talent scout
Finally got him caught
While she was throwing out all his clothes
She heard a voice from beyond the throes
“Punish him for the life he chose
but forgive the past that he did not.”
[Chorus]
It's really hard to hate anyone
When you know what they've lived through
And once they've given you a taste she said
“This is for you to overcome
But I will always love you”
In her perfect state of grace
Maybe that will crack the case
[Verse 3]
Now that we're through with formalities
What is it you wanna ask of me?
I'll answer open and honestly
Whatever that means finding out
We occupy somebody else opposing side
On the banks of some great divide
Two versions of the dream
[Chorus]
Countless revisions of history
trying to tell us the future
Between each commercial break
I wanna call of the cavalry
Declare no winners or losers
And forgive our shared mistakes
You can pick the time and place
Maybe that will crack the case
Dawson Schulenberg I had not thanked you yet. Haha. Thank you very much. It is always appreciated when someone takes the time to do what you did. Thanks.
Yeah man, no problem here's living in the future for you too!
[Verse 1]
I know all of my exits
I am always planning my escape
It's the most aggressive symphony
Of this collective found pain
And the more that you ignore it
The more it makes you go insane
Just look around
It's the battle of the passwords
It's the trumpets on the hill
It's that constant paranoia
It's that final fire drill
And if you won't sing the anthem
Then go find someone else who will
Their crackin' down
[Chorus]
We're livin' in the future!
So shine a little light
It may not make it any better
I'm just hopin' that it might
I'm not talkin' 'bout forever
How 'bout just gettin' through the night
We're livin' in the future!
So shine a little light
[Verse 2]
I'm always lookin' over shoulders
Not knowing what I'm lookin' for
Now that the feelin' that someones watching
Isn't just a feelin' anymore
Now that both sides of the isle
Are as good as keepin' score
We've crossed our line
But there's a madness to the method
There's a muckit for the fear
It's that dance out on that razor's edge
A wolf held by their ears
It's the man behind the curtain
It's the way of all frontiers
Since the dawn of time
[Chorus] x2
We're livin' in the future!
So shine a little light
It may not make it any better
I'm just hopin' that it might
I'm not talkin' 'bout forever
How 'bout just gettin' through the night
We're livin' in the future!
So shine a little light
Taylor and his sensitive soul gives us with ears to hear a beautiful fullness of musical poetry.
Sometimes you should simply hum along.
What a guy you are.
What a guy.
this is just fantastic...another great song and really looking forward to the whole album.. verse 2 really brings in the emotions with the characters talking!
Just so beautiful, as always.

My thoughts exactly!
My reaction to this song is the same as when I first heard "No Hard Feelings" by The Avett Brothers;" how can anyone this young be so wise?
Not a him, it's a them. I get what you mean though
Im not crying you are.
I'm not crying it's just been raining on my face
Patrick Maley, I cried
Robert Ledet- and if you think you see some tear-tracks down my face, please... don't tell my mates...
It's just that I've been cutting onions
I'm. Making. A. Lasagna.
(For one)
These aren't tears of sadness, they're tears of joy; I'm just laughing! Ha... ha, ha... ha...
This is fantastic!!! Original Dawes!!!
Dawes I love your lyrics so good damn. Much. Thanks for slowing it down
Why are yall so good at writing songs?
Good question. Think it may have something do with the stuff they've been choosing to read.
Sooo good, fellas. So good. Definitely one of my songs of the year.
This will be one of the songs played at my funeral, along with A Little Bit of Everything. I want to leave this world, with these songs as background music.
Beautiful
Taylor Goldsmith has written The Song for our time in history.
Taylor is the poet of the millennial generation.
Getting some Division Bell vibes from this intro!
Yup, reminds me of "Marooned"
I hear it subtly.
The opening reminds me a lot of the opening track of the album.
Men me to i swear
Lost for Words?
Best song of 2018!
Very much enjoying the new sound !!
The story-telling ability within their lyrics is remarkable.
this is really nice, can't wait to hear it on vinyl and on the roadddddd
This is incredible
These are the most creative lyric videos ever. Plus the vibe of the new album with the visual aesthetic is just perfect. Feel like I’m hacking in Fallout, except this is enjoyable
These guys....they never fail to reach my heart with their lyrics and music. 😍
Love Dawes...they never disappoint.
Powerful lyrics and smooth melody. Lovin' it
Speechless......there are no words.......

I’ve been forgetting to listen to this song every day and my wellbeing has declined accordingly

That’s more than music.
Love this song
this is the shit that is going to change the world.
That was sweet. Sons.
wonderful song - would be great to see you in Germany - my time comes, to see you playing live - somewhere ... in Europe?
MUCH better than the other official single to be released ahead of the new album, IMO.
I'm on the fence, I like both, but this is my favourite. :)
Heard this song after months listening to it one day I heard it in the background on the TV Show “The Flash” with Cisco and his date ❤️
Love it!
Can anyone maybe find a way to make that melody on screen of the music box real? It doesnt match up to the real melody, so im curious as to what it is
So cool
Thank you.
I'm going to have this on constant repeat for a week! The Jimmie Kimmel live version is even better.
What a great song!
That is how the fuck you write a song
Curti a música
second listen, yes, masterpiece
Nice Pip-Boy.
I really thought we were all out of onions to chop in my house
