"If you ever end up pointing your sword at me, I'm sure I will have done something to deserve it." UGHHHHH that line gives me chills, such amazing foreshadowing. I might like it even more than the "intend to?" line.
“Are you afraid of me, Estelle?” caught me off-guard the first time, for how uncharacteristically scared and insecure it sounds. It’s one of the only times Yuri shows weakness in the game, and it’s because he’s afraid of losing Estelle. Props to Troy Baker for the very subtle delivery.
The relationship between Yuri & Estelle is one of my favourite things about Vesperia. Both characters have very different views of the world having different upbringings with Yuri seeing the ugly side of humanity and Estelle seeing the good in others but both help each other out through thick and thin and I love that. I always saw Yuri & Estelle's relationship platonic too and it was great to see that in a piece of entertainment where they usually stick both the male and female leads into the relationship even if both leads have nothing in common.
Personally Tear and Luke were my favorite. In particular I thought they complimented each other well and helped each other grow as people. Especially Luke who really had some tremendous character development in that game. Tear was also not the stereotypical damsel character that we typically see as female leads in tales games...like Collette for instance. I really like Yuri though I will say that.. Est on the other hand, she okay i guess...I don't find her annoying but not sure I would say I like her either. I prefer Tear as opposed to her.
@@KirbyGotenksabsorbed Can you really blame them? I mean shippers might be some of the most obnoxious people on the internet, especially with gay / yuri shippers, and ESPECIALLY games with very left-leaning (twitter) fanbases like Genshin Impact, Dangoranpa, Honkai Impact, Black Butler.
@@UBvtuber Yeah I can. The exact crowds you're describing are the ones who are in denial about this the most (though the "I'm not mature enough to accept romance in media so I'll just pretend it doesn't exist" crowd are pretty insufferable too). 80% of the time when I see people claiming "Yuri/Estelle are platonic/sibling-like", it's followed with "I ship Yuri with Flynn" and/or "I ship Estelle with Rita", or occasionally "I ship Yuri with Judith" because they think one scene with a light amount of shallow flirting is what constitutes as romance, and these sorts will go on with this while completely ignoring key scenes like the one I previously mentioned and have endlessly spread misinformation about this discussion since its inception.
7:47: So glad they used that line as Yuri’s quote for the trading card game in Tales of Graces F. This is why Yuri is my all time favorite character in ANY piece of media I’ve ever experienced.
I don't get why some people try to pass off Estelle and Yuri as purely platonic; there are scenes in the game that rather heavily imply that this isn't the case. It's not a romance so blatant and stereotypical that it hits you over the head with itself, but it's most definitely there.
I agree. I think one of the biggest indicators of it is during the heart to heart she says she wants to stay with everyone and then ends it by specifically saying "With You."
@@KouheixHazuki Yes, that scene specifically is what I had in mind. Then they stare at each other romantically until Estelle eventually shies away, and he straight-up responds that he feels the same way.
"Estelle helping Yuri catch the guy who screwed up his plumbing." That was a good one. :D I also fully agree on that scene between Yuri and Flynn and that one line, made all the better by Troy's excellent delivery of it. (Although my personal favorite is still the way he says "Loser" when you beat Flynn later in the game. XD ) This is the best positive analysis of Yuri and Estelle's interactions I've heard. It points out a lot of stuff that snaps together well in the themes of the story. A lot of analysis/criticism I hear tend to focus more on Yuri and Flynn, and then on Estelle by herself, one of the issues with her being her seemingly not being affected enough by some of the stuff she goes through, but looking at these two specifically, which is at the forefront of the game, opens up a lot of things that work well. I was curious what you'd say about their relationship being romantic or not since that's the most common thing I hear people mention, either preferring romance or disliking that idea (and thus being annoyed with the game hinting at them possibly being an item.) But I agree on it feeling kind of platonic or familial, and especially agree that it's totally okay that plenty of people see it the other way. That's what I like about your content though, you're very chill about different perspectives and don't come across like you want people to feel bad about having a different opinion. :)
I can't believe how great you have become in writing. The part that especially sprung out to me was from 9:50 onwards. The video till that part had been solid but the last few minutes launched it to a whole other level.
This entire relationship is tightly condensed kino A lot of what you said here reminded me of how much I love both Yuri and Estelle and how their characters progress all throughout thanks to the interactions with one another I've never really thought of what my favorite duo in Tales would be because I tend to look at either the individual characters or the cast as a whole more, but I can't deny just how well the progression of their relationship is written, so yeah, they'd probably be my favorite too Also, one thing that's kinda refreshing about Yuri and Estelle that I noticed is that usually when two characters whose personalities clash drastically grow as people thanks to each other influence throughout the story, they start out disliking or even hating each other, so it's nice to see a bit of change in the formula while still getting an arc that's just as or even more impactful than the rest of them (not that Vesperia is the only example of this necessarily, but still) Personally, I used to view the two as a couple by the end of the game but I've mellowed down on it over the years and I definitely agree that you can interpret it however you want Like, if there's ever a sequel, *cough* I'd be totally on board whether they stay as just very good friends or start building a more romantic relationship, because regardless, their relationship is still strong and satisfying I've been thinking of doing a character analysis on Estelle for a while now because I really wanted to talk about her arc and what makes it so special, but you already said a lot of the stuff I wanted to here, and I feel like I'd be just redundant/wouldn't do as much justice to her, but maybe I'll still do it one day, who knows Anyways... Top 1 Zaffre videos? Top 1 Zaffre videos.
my dude you should totally still do that estelle analysis! not everyone who watches my videos watches yours and i'm sure you'll have plenty more to add to the table :D
Thank you so much Zaffre for putting this video up. I've always loved this game so much, especially its characters and their dynamics. Yuri and Estelle is the most moving and beautiful relationship between characters I've every seen. They're written to be stereotypes, but find a way to be so original and moving as they grow as people. I agree to everything you've said, but there are some things I also would like to add a little more on. Yuri, who lived pretty much all of his life as an orphan - living a tough life where he is pushed around, forced to be independant and lonely as a lone child, never got out of his mindset as being his own guardian and leader even into adulthood. Which even lead to his choice to leave the knighthood when disagreeing with their ethics and morals, in contrast to Flynn who believed that the law, sure with its flaws that CAN be changed, was just. Yuri's whole journey eventually leads him to finally realize that it's okay to depend on someone, that it's okay to trust someone who isn't covered in fur. And Estelle who has lived such a sheltered and secluded life because of her position, and as we eventually come to know, power is doomed to become naive and innocent of the world everyone around her has tried so hard to seperate from her. Her whole life she's been so dependant on the people around her, but thankfully she is very wise, as she realizes that she wants to know more. That there even is more to know. Know more, not only of the vast world outside of her castle walls, but about herself as a person (and eventually about her power). Once these two characters meet, they're instantly drawn to eachother, not only because they share one goal, but because they subconsciously realize this about each other. I love these two people's dynamic the most in this game, even though there are so many more fantastic dynamics between other characters, this one really stands out to me the most. Such a beautiful kinship. Such perfect fit for to teach each other what they are missing in life. Thank you again for publishing this video and reading this comment! Keep it up man ^^
"They're written to be stereotypes, but find a way to be so original and moving as they grow as people" Isn't that the entire Tales franchise in general? Which is why I love it to death.
Damn zaffre, what a video. This was some of your best writing yet. No side comments, no filler, just 12 minutes of great storytelling. Vesperia is the only tales game I’ve completed, and yet it’s gotten me completely hooked on the whole series. And this game being so good is a reason why. I only finished it half a year ago and it’s become one of, if not my favorite game of all time. So thanks for fanboying over it even more, I always love to hear it!
I haven’t seen or played most of the Tales games, but I must say that the one that still hits me the most is Vesperia. It may be because it was my first Tales experience (watched an LP of the og Vesperia back in 2013), but I still think it was my best experience so far, Abyss is definitely in my personal second place and it’s real close to Vesperia. And seeing the dynamic between Yuri and Estelle was really cute and cool, as well as inspiring considering their chemistry and development throughout the story.
Man it would have been cool to think of what a duel mystic arte would have been between these two! I mean Yuri and Flynn got one, so why not these two?? Sucks they really didn't start doing double mystic artes till Berseria.
Because it only makes sense for Yuri and Flynn to have one, they know each other since childhood and mostly have the same artes or similar artes in their arsenal: Tiger Blade Guardian Field Dragon Swarm Shining Fang/Sword Rain Shining Fang Drop/Sword Rain Alpha Azure Edge/Demon Fang Lone Wolf Charge/Beast etc.
They’re my favorite as well. Based on the admittedly little we know about the Arise duo, they seem like they could potentially rival Yuri and Estelle’s relationship. They already have the factors that gives them some mutual dependency. I hope they at least come close.
Estelle is a princess, so for a wanted criminal to even hug her is probably a death sentence so their relationship probably could never even thing about romance.
Sad OldGuy Hm? I never said they had a romance. I’m actually happy they don’t, as I don’t really see them working together unless forced. Estelle even mentioned the type of guy she’s into, and it sounded like Flynn. Besides, I don’t think Yuri would go for Estelle anyway.
@@sadoldguy4380 if you play the quest you would know that in the future Estelle will leave the capital and live in Hailure and i wrote before that there is a big chance that vesbira guild will make Hailure as there base town since the city is close to the lower quarter and the people love them for saving there city so yuri and still can be together
@@bababobo5067 don't worry they love each other bye the way even if he isn't her type she still love him and when she said that she wasn't known Yuri very will at that time
That was an amazing video! I’m not gonna lie, even on my current replay of Vespy, you bringing up 8:33 made me tear up because I never knew Yuri had that shake in his voice! Overall though, I love how you described Yuri and Estelle’s relationship, and it allows me to kinda remember how everything went. Keep up the good work!
This is such a great video. I literally just beat Vesperia twenty minutes ago and I was super exited to hear your perspective on these two. While I was overall not the biggest fan of the game, this video did a great job of contextualizing their relationship and really added a lot to how I personal view it.
I love your channel and I like the Tales series and I do agree Vesperia's story and presentation these two feels extremely refreshing and engaging. Keep up the good work.
This was such a wonderfully wholesome and astounding video Zaffre! You put everything I absolutely LOVE about Vesperia and Yuri & Estelle into words and hit all the right notes. I love their relationship for these exact same reasons and it just made me appreciate this duo that much more. I can still remember the day I played Vesperia for the first time and instantly latched on to these two characters. Their dynamic, their banter, their care and appreciation for one another, everything about them made me fall in love with them. Thank you for giving Yuri & Estelle the spotlight they deserve! I would love to see more videos like this if you ever desire.
Man, this video is excellent! You did such a great job with the writing about of these two, and I would love to hear more spoiler-filled analysis videos like this!
Always here on time for your videos! Tales of vesperia is also my first and favourite tales and i am doing a tales of marathon juste like you (not in the same order) to forge my own opinion on the games. I really like your content keep on the good work!
And people say that the cast of vesperia isn't interesting my goodness this video was a treat. Appreciate how you go into the depth of these 2 characters and how their relationship blossomed
Very good video, I really like your analysis. I have played Tales of Vesperia only recently with the definitive edition on Nintendo Switch, and not only was the game fantastic but I think Yuri and Estelle were fantastic characters and their relationship was probably the best thing in the game. I had the same feels and opinion about them than you did, only thing I disagree on is that I strongly believe that they are truly in love with each other in the end (although I have played the french version of the game, since I am french, so perhaps the translation was a bit different than the english one ? I don't know, but at least in the french version their dialogue at the end of the game during the last night before going to Tarquaron did sound like a (subtle) declaration of love in my opinion.) Anyway Yuri and Estelle are amazing characters with absolutely great and brilliant chemistry. My most favorite Tales of duo is still Luke and Tear but Yuri and Estelle are now close second.
Well then... Guess who just finished Tales of Vesperia, his first Tales game... Goddamn was that an experience. Y'know, I knew I was gonna like it before I even started playing, due to my incredible weakness for epic, well, tales. But here's my first timer's impressions anyway: + The beginning in Zafias all the way to the woods, that's magical. Pure magic. As far as beginnings go, that's up there with AC2 (my childhood darling game, in a big part due to that beginning). -From when Karol joins the party until Rita does, some excitement is lost for me. I guess some part of that is due to Karol being my least liked member of the cast (I don't hate him, I just think he has quite a bit of missed potential, like Yeager)... and also, well, y'know, it's when that magical aura of the beginning starts to wear off, which made me notice the exposition more, which made me think that, as fantasy goes... this is surprisingly generic. + Then Rita joins and the story starts picking up. Yuri, Repede, Estelle, Karol and Rita are basically the "inner" cast, y'know, the main gang, and they are a pretty strong cast all things considered. +From then on, until Alexei starts to make an appearance, that is the "meatiest", most "alive" part of the game for me. The tone here is perfect. It's the perfect mix of whimsical and heroic. As I got into it, I was surprised by how deep and well thought-out the political and societal landscape is. And it was also very refreshing that the characters are written to actually understand and live in this landscape. The dialogue in this game is extremely good, and it's so rare to have characters that feel like real, intelligent people. + And until Alexei's defeat, it's all beautiful. The mini-ending here (which is the ending of the 2nd act on the bigger picture) is _extremely_ emotional; And also this might be just me, but since I always had Yuri (to play) and Estelle (as an AI healer) (and _definitely_ not because seeing them together is so sweet) in my battle party, being forced to accept her disappearance and having to change up my strategies just added to the tragic feeling of that entire part. - My only nitpick here is that as the cast got bigger, it started getting a little annoying to have to devote half the dialogue time to everyone giving their excuses to stick with Yuri every time we got somewhere. Realistic, yes, but just a little too predictable. And getting predictable is really really bad for story-driven games especially, because you start seeing the code behind the game, which erodes everyone's Humanity. And finally the third act. To be honest it kinda lost me a little bit in the end. Maybe it's because I'm a selfish bastard who just doesn't connect with the environmental message as I should, but I think the escalation of the stakes was not handled perfectly either. Because it became primarily about saving the world, basically, and in a way that just made everything a little colder and less intimate or personal than I would like. The over-seriousness of it was also not helped by the rendered cutscenes' artstyle. I mean, I can suspend my disbelief so much, but when chibi characters are giving loud speeches about Humanity and the fate of the world, that just went a little to the side of silly for me. (This, I feel, would be easily mitigated if there were just a few more anime-style cutscenes mixed in, to help your imagination do the work) All in all however, through the ups and downs, it was a beautiful, at times brilliant, at times heartfelt, at times mirthful, journey. That's the most important thing, and that's why I'll still be calling this one a masterpiece in spite of all my nagging (plus this exact pattern of ending letdown has happened with another game once, but then for some reason that ending _really_ grew on me, and now it's one of my favourite endings ever and I think about it everyday; What I'm saying is, it is likely that my opinion will improve massively within the following month)
This is also one of my favorite duos in tales ( with Luke and Tear) but I really feel the justice theme should’ve been extended even thought I wasn’t really that all crazy when Yuri kills because my first tales I played and beaten was abyss when they kill people because they have to ( even though Luke did had trouble killing people in the start of the game ).
ZaffreRevolution yea it was weird the story shifted and I wish some party members went against Yuri’s view of justice. It could’ve easily been Karol, for example they could’ve made one of the guilds laws to be “ don’t kill “ or even Rita thinking Yuri went too far because she also still a kid and it could showcase more of her humanity.
While I do think you have some Vesperia bias, I do agree 100%. I'm still torn what my favorite Tales game is and such, and I'm currently playing through a couple of Tales game as we speak, but I do agree fully that Yuri and Estelle are also my favorite duo between Protagonist & Deuteragonist. They have such a genuine platonic partnership. Luke & Tear comes at a solid 2nd place for me regarding character duo. However, I am quite excited to do Tales of Destiny (the PS2 remake) eventually. Something about Stahn and Rutee looks so awesome.
I'm more a fan of the Xillia 2 duo Elle Ludger father daughter relationship they have but honnestly I can understand every point you made with Yuri Estelle ^^
i criticize a LOT this game, but to be fair these two are the only reason why i actually wanted to keep on playing it. i genuinely loved the two of them as they were both my favs. and they added so much to the game.
Honestly I could imagine some people turning Yuri into a harem protagonist with Estelle, Rita, and Judith. Your entire vid explains YuriXEstelle shippers and one third of the harem ones. Rita, she and Yuri originally butted heads from the moment they met until Rita truly felt a bond with Estelle. There were times Rita would blush because of one or the other often making some imagine a love triangle scenario. As for Judith, well, they're just two similar people who get one another and as Estelle helped Yuri out of the dark, they all helped Judith.
If you ever need some more video topics. If you haven't I would suggest the chameriad and God generals as a group and thier relationship with the main cast as they felt just as much as main characters as the main cast throughout the journey and hurt as much to see them go. Double that with xillia 2 where the knife is twisted in your heart seeing the life presa agria jiao wingul could have had and the cast seeing what they lost. Better done than bersteria as zesteria aside eizen I didn't fell much for sorey and Denzel especially Alicia's whole story being a nothing and exactly why dlc stories don't work in main stories. But yeah chameriad and God generals are the best written villains group as I saw them as much as heroes as the cast too
I'd like to hear what he says about that too, considering the types of relationships that were at play between them. Every God General in Abyss had a connection with the main cast in some way, which I think the least connected with the them is Guy but I could be wrong (I haven't played it in a long time). And there's the Chameriad with a much more deep connection with certain characters, and I'm glad that Xillia 2 expanded upon that further with the Fractured Dimensions with what could have been. Hopefully he'll get to talk about them soon! And yeah, I gave a minor spoiler to Abyss but I'm not sure who has and hasn't played Abyss and both Xillia games.
@@ivaniz3157 don't worry I'm replaying them so I'm good. Guy was rival to sync as he saw his face ealry on and connection was van in what happened to his home with all the heads using it as an experiment. While guy didn play much a role in power or connections he still did his part. Funny part is replaying xillia I think it's darker and better done than vesperia especially with xillia 2 making it hurt at all the lives he cast could have had while abyss is darker seeing the deep story in the clones being used in all sorts of ways compared to bersteria I feel is the "mainstream" xillia game. But yeah chameriad having rivals to the main cast made them better and I really didn't want to see them go. Xillia 2 made it worse especially seeing jiao calling Elise daughter. Both me and my brother loved him. God generals I wish arietta was our girl instead of anise. She is actually sweet and looked cute when van carrried her while anise while her parents are dumb I didn't care much for replaying. Overall the best villains done were them. Bersteria failed as oscar and co only got 2 fights and I felt nothing seeing them die aside rokuous brother he was cool and Arthur. Overall it was a badly done rival group compared to chameriad who go from allies to enemes then allies again as gauis and muzet become heroes while God generals were just a deep as the main cast. That's why I like tales. The best done enemies just feel like unplayable heroes and that hard work in making them feel like they could join up anytime adds to thier unique style and perosnalties. Also replaying vesperia alexie made a better villain
@@ivanbluecool Thanks for the clarification, and yeah, the chemistry and history the characters have with the Chameriad and the God Generals made the overall experience for the games. Seeing what would have happened to Wingul and what could have been between Alvin and Presea makes the feeling of their deaths more impactful. And the side quests done made us better understand their relationship with one another, like with Tear and Legretta before meeting Luke. It's things like this is what made me like characters more in stories and made the Tales series my favorite.
@@ivaniz3157 well my friend brought it up to me as a "expanding story" where characters are constantly changing through the story natural rather than one big change and just nothing each time. Also they may be more mature but you still see some of them end game like how Luke while more mature he still gets angry at times and rays shows him buy an apple to tear while I don't like that ship much was a cute callback to Luke in abyss. Yeah chameriad and God generals were so great they brought sync ealry in rays same with dysc for enemy and ally units being fan favorites. Breaks your heart seeing presa similar like legretta hide thier true names and still care for the guys the knew wouldn't stay with them in Alvin plus van. I still don't hate van or gauis even if xillia 2 never came out seeing his as a hero with muzet was cute as gaius was super nice to muzet which I liked But yeah best villains overall which is why I don't like the hype bandwagon of berstera. It's a great game but not the best Graces I would add to seeing a smaller villain cast but really well done and made me sad as lamda Sophie and thier creators could have been a family while asbel works with Sophie's fear of everyone dying. Wow that was deep for tales and spin offs it's cute seeing Sophie call cheria and asbel her parents and everyone think they had Sophie at an ealry age. Semi hero enemy Flynn pre ps3 vesperia is my favorite character compared to Alicia who was bad at being a semi member. PS3 vesperia made flynn a hero and main party member my favorite overall more than Yuri and guy as I just loved that boy and he is on my list of "fight the world for my boys" list in Emil Luke Flynn Jude being sweet boys and I would go against the world's to keep them happy. But yeah tales stories are hit or miss but overall xillia and abyss did it best at making an anti hero mirror group to fight against and still best enemies ever written in takes. Can't wait for crestoria and arise. Im just gonna whoever I like and start with luke my number character of all of tales series.
@@ivanbluecool Same here dude. And with some of the footage gathered from Tales of Crestoria's open beta, the story and characters are going to be very interesting. Here's hoping it does well.
Yuri definitely leaves an impression on me, especially since.he doesnt care about killing high ranking officals for Vesperias creed. I was a fan of Juri though
Too bad that Yuri and Estelle are just friends. They could've been a great couple if they ever had interest with each other, I've would loved it they did that.:(
They definitely had feelings towards each other but they never pursued it further than their friendship especially yuri his free spirited persona is not made for a relationship
Symphonia and Vesperia were my first two Tales games and since the beginning i liked Yuri a lot more than Lloyd and I loved Estelle waaaaaaaaaaaay more than Collette. This is definitely the better duo.
I Agree they are a great Tales duo, But so are Sorey and Alisha even though sadly Alisha didn't get much story time or scenes on Zestiria. I feel like tales of zestiria was done a little dirty no romance, no friendship connections. That's probably why Tales of Berseria, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Xillia and Tales of Arise
My favorite Tales duo is either this one or Lloyd and Colette, but for the latter it's probably mainly due to nostalgia. Yuri and Estelle do compliment each other really well, and like you I never really saw them as an overtly romantic pairing, but rather as very close friends (for the record I ship Yuri with Judith).
My ranking of the Tales Duos (from the games I've played): 12. *Kor and Kohaku:* God, I _hated_ these two. Awful characters with an awful, forced as hell romance, worst duo by far. 11. *Jude and Milla:* Boring romance and zero chemistry, this is just not a good duo, sorry not sorry. 10. *Luke and Tear:* Great characters by themselves, but as a romance their relationship is kinda toxic (though that's mostly Tear's fault). 9. *Senel and Shirley:* I'm a little conflicted on this one, they're not bad characters, but as a duo they're kinda hit or miss. 8. *Cress and Mint:* Kinda generic, but a cute enough pairing. Not bad, but not great either. 7. *Sorey and Mikleo:* Chemistry-wise this is easily one of the best duos, though it's dragged down by them both being kinda bland. 6. *Velvet and Laphicet:* Though I think Laphicet's crush on Velvet was kinda iffy, they're still a great duo, as well as great characters. 5. *Reid and Farah:* Solid duo, great chemistry and a good, but surprisingly subtle, romance as well. 4. *Ludger and Elle:* Loved their father-daughter bond, very cute and wholesome. 3. *Asbel and Sophie:* Another father-daughter duo, and it's easily one of my favorites. I loved how it evolved over the course of the story. 2. *Yuri and Estelle:* The first duo that was not overtly romantic, and it's also one of the best. Great characters with great chemistry. 1. *Lloyd and Colette:* Nostalgic bias aside, this is easily my otp of the series, really just a fantastic romance. Love both characters too. It's interesting to note that aside from my number one all the top spots were taken by the (arguably) platonic duos.
just finished the game. Had some expectations since people online kept repeating the story and characters were great, specially Yuri who, for many, is tales best protagonist. my expirience couldnt be more different. Yuri is a murderer. How can that be you protagonist/hero? The video passes the idea that Yuri changes his way because estelle gives him a chance and believes in him. Interesting, but still not cool. While the idea of giving people a second chance is a great one to pass to kids, the game also gives a pass to being a vigilante and going over the Law. Yuri may have changed( did he even? after the scene in the desert town the focus of the story shifts into saving the world so he is not faced with another vilain) but he is never punished, even if Flynn and other say they will eventually take him to face justice. On Estelle: the indecisiveness you mention bothered me during the beginning of the game. It takes to long for her to make her mind and it doesnt help that the whole situation she is in is not realistic. Why is she even a princess? To facilitate the plot? She being royalty is cliché and creates a problem. Where is her family and why is she given liberty to roam around the world unchecked, without even an escort of knights? Similarly, the eventuall sucessor to the throne( the kid) doesnt have a mentor, an adult to supervise him?
"Yuri is a murderer. How can that be you protagonist/hero?" Murderer? You're taking it a bit low. Yuri is devil himself. Not human at all. I don't know how this was overlooked for 10 years. This plot is actually a retelling of Sumerian myth of Vesper (Venus) The Morning Star (Istar Anunit). I don't know the details myself what exactly possessed Namco to touch their postgame situation now, but Yuri & Estelle back in 2008 were based on Shamash and Aya if those names say something to you... and in 2009 this took a turn for a worse. I'm in desperate search for the reasons myself. (Reading Japanese Asteria and ToRays... and Crestoria got this demoness called Yuri in their cast too. Oh, this will be fun soon enough. This is last year ToV is favorite in the West. The translation changed and hid a ton of vital stuff to get this right.) "Similarly, the eventuall successor to the throne( the kid) doesn't have a mentor, an adult to supervise him?" My thoughts exactly. Yuri (whatever he was he knew nothing anyway) is my favorite character of all times, but in fact they... be ready to know they've destroyed their world... and I'm not sure this is bad thing taking into account on what planet he lived on.
things are not black and white. This game presents you with this question - if the only way to achieve justice is to commint a murder - shoudl one do it? It will make you a murderer...but is it better to let someone go, even if it means he goes unpunished...the people commited serious crimes - they litteraly killed a lot of innocent people and the system knew about it and let them go. Yuri knew it, he knew that it will make him murdere, but he did it anyway. Whyt is the right thing to do? It is not an easy answer
@@suc125 ok. the bad guys must be stoped but outright mudreing them in the night? i understand the theme but, as it is often the case with Tales of games, the way it is treated is not great
@@goncaloferreira6429 of course it is wrong, but that´s the point! that´s why it is such dilema. Yuri believed this is the only way. It is either this, or the guys being unpunished. Your answer is letting go someone who was feeding people to mosters just for fun, and he will probably gain power again or will live an easy life, rather than kill him in this way. I am not so sure.
@@suc125 my point is there were other ways to go about stoping the bad guys but it seems yuri didnt even stopped to consider them. he went with the simples of answers- i have a sword, i kill, the end. that may be more realistic than most anime style narratives but it is still wrong and there are no way around it. yuri should not be praysed as a good person if he is a murderer. also, how about is conscience? he kills to stop the bad guy, but does he kill himself afterward? does he give himself to be locked up for life or executed? no. he justifies himself and carries on. that is kind bad guyish in itself. also, unlike most narratives where the here is a good guy, this version quite clearly shows that violence as an answer is acceptable
I never liked Estelle with yuri a much. Flynn was just more interesting seeing the gray area both must take in Yuri killing for the greater good. Best duos for me is different for me in each. Jude and millia make a great cross between worlds and overall cast was well done even in the sequel. Ludger with his brother and Elle is very dark and grey as it would make sense in all forms for his choices of saving his brother at the cost of his friends and Elle. Save Elle but she dies to see him become Victor and meet his wife or die himself destroy his family future while Elle gets a future all more darker and better than most give credit for. Abyss luke and Natalia more than tear as they got through similar hardships more and would rather see lastch(luke plus asch) with Natalia to rule being the fusion. Marta and Emil I liked seeing the relationship even with the simple story and she was the main girl to have the guts to kiss the guys. Asbel and cheria while cute I liked seeing the family aspect with Sophie but wanted a bit more from them. Velvet and phi was nice but her brother laphi was so annoying and lucky velvet was a better person than him. Phi was awesome punching him in the face. I cheered. Guess zelos and cast I liked most in Symphonia and I really liked him and was scared hearing what alt fate he would have. Especially with Sheena. Overall while vesperia has a great combat system and story it's not my top game Estelle really annoyed as SHE IS 18 and even sheltered acts more childish than Rita yet somehow able to keep Yuri at Bay. Her side story was better in becoming a story teller than with Yuri and spin offs I like her when she acts more bubbly even playing the game 3 times in a row she annoyed me most from the cast ealry game
and here i was hopeing Shionne and Alphen would be as deep as Yuri and estelle.... Arise is a good game but it is such a bad tales game and a hollow RPG. there is not much depth in arise. Arise's combat is awesome. it looks fantastic.... but the rest is so damn simple.
Estelle by her self isn't really interesting at all. The second arc of the game is just her dragging the party around based on her random whims and is sold to as "development" to me. Vesperia is by far the most disappointing story for me because of how much people talk this game up story-wise. I've seen countless people rail on future Tale's characters as "not as good as Vesperia". The build-up of Vepseria is the best build-up I've seen in Tales. It was so good that it became a massive disappointment in the end. It did not live up to what it offered and what the fans have been raving about. But Vesperia is still a videogame and a very damn good one. The best of what I've played in regards to pre-CC/AC combat. Content is pretty damn good and the game looks great. It's not a bad game by any means. But I don't see it as the best possible Tales to disregard any other game.
Vesperia is great, but I think it has some pacing issues and I thought the third act was very underwhelming compared to Act 1 & 2. Still love it though.
When I was younger, I actually shipped them. But now that I'm older and actually got to play the game myself, I realized how extremely gay Yuri and Flynn are. I see Yuri and Estelle more as Siblings than a couple. Also Estelle is in a gay relationship with Rita. Some people say Zestiria started gay relationships. But deep in our hearts we all knew Vesperia did it first. Estelle is really cute though. And I can't wait for Tales of Arise.
no, you're mixing two worlds. Yuri who likes Estelle is not the same person as Flynn's lover. You need to play 360 ToV to see Yuri and Estelle's relationship separately. ToV REMASTER (2009, PS3) is gay for people who have no right call themselves ToV's fans, but it is a different game, a different world and the reason behind this looking THAT MUCH gay is grave. It is NOT gay actually it is worse and soon will be known worldwide.
I personally still ship Estelle and Yuri. It's a nice relationship with a lot going for it. Saying Yuri and Flynn are gay just cause both of them have these unique interactions is kinda hypocritical.
@@alphawolf7417 that's not my point. Yuri DOESN't exist as a guy (or anything close to a human being) at all. People, please it is known far and wide for more than three years already. Yuri is with Raven by ToV's end. The whole ToV story is about how they met. Estelle isn't stupid too, she had Yuri play a princess in the play she wrote for their 10th anniversary. Yuri NEVER was gay with Flynn because Flynn serves as a role model for his "male" part of self. Yuri is the Morning Star and can't maintain "her" cover anymore in both ongoing worlds.
What is it with you people always ruining everything I like? I like Yuri and Flynn together, because they're cute. So just leave me alone and let me ship them. I like them as a couple.
@@Nikita_Akashya i wasn't trying to ruin it. I'm just saying that calling all of them being gay is obvious yet any straight ships aren't is pretty hypocritical. As he said you can easily interpret the relationships in this game in a variety of ways. I personally think everyone except Rita is straight but again that's just my opinion.
*Yuri and Estelle have a scene where they basically confess their feelings for each other*'
The "they're just platonic" crowd: "I'll ignore that."
@@KirbyGotenksabsorbed see, the problem there is that those people DO care about certain ships. I dont give a crap who they smash lol
XD )
This is the best positive analysis of Yuri and Estelle's interactions I've heard.
The video till that part had been solid but the last few minutes launched it to a whole other level.
thank you so much man that means a lot :')
Here comes my favorite person to hear fanboy about tales
tales king in the house
ZaffreRevolution now one day I definitely need to play a tales game, any recommendations, vesperia maybe?
This entire relationship is tightly condensed kino
A lot of what you said here reminded me of how much I love both Yuri and Estelle and how their characters progress all throughout thanks to the interactions with one another
I've never really thought of what my favorite duo in Tales would be because I tend to look at either the individual characters or the cast as a whole more, but I can't deny just how well the progression of their relationship is written, so yeah, they'd probably be my favorite too
Also, one thing that's kinda refreshing about Yuri and Estelle that I noticed is that usually when two characters whose personalities clash drastically grow as people thanks to each other influence throughout the story, they start out disliking or even hating each other, so it's nice to see a bit of change in the formula while still getting an arc that's just as or even more impactful than the rest of them (not that Vesperia is the only example of this necessarily, but still)
Personally, I used to view the two as a couple by the end of the game but I've mellowed down on it over the years and I definitely agree that you can interpret it however you want
Like, if there's ever a sequel, *cough* I'd be totally on board whether they stay as just very good friends or start building a more romantic relationship, because regardless, their relationship is still strong and satisfying
I've been thinking of doing a character analysis on Estelle for a while now because I really wanted to talk about her arc and what makes it so special, but you already said a lot of the stuff I wanted to here, and I feel like I'd be just redundant/wouldn't do as much justice to her, but maybe I'll still do it one day, who knows
Anyways... Top 1 Zaffre videos?
Top 1 Zaffre videos.
also return of longer analytical comments LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
my dude you should totally still do that estelle analysis! not everyone who watches my videos watches yours and i'm sure you'll have plenty more to add to the table :D
That's a video I'd gladly watch! I hope you decide to make it!
Keep it up man ^^
this is some really awesome, extra insight to their relationship! great stuff dude
"They're written to be stereotypes, but find a way to be so original and moving as they grow as people"
Isn't that the entire Tales franchise in general? Which is why I love it to death.
@@Petronia911 Well yeah ^^ But I find this specific dynamic between Yuri and Estelle as one of a kind and very fazcinating :D
I just finished Tales of Vesperia and I couldn’t agree anymore.
I love Yuri and Estelle! 🥰
There needs to be more Tales content on UA-cam you're videos are so great!
Man it would have been cool to think of what a duel mystic arte would have been between these two! I mean Yuri and Flynn got one, so why not these two?? Sucks they really didn't start doing double mystic artes till Berseria.
for now their team attack in project x zone will do but yo that would've been so sick...
Or a Rita and Estelle duel mystic arte
Because it only makes sense for Yuri and Flynn to have one, they know each other since childhood and mostly have the same artes or similar artes in their arsenal:
Tiger Blade
Guardian Field
Dragon Swarm
Shining Fang/Sword Rain
Shining Fang Drop/Sword Rain Alpha
Azure Edge/Demon Fang
Lone Wolf Charge/Beast
etc.
Jean AceCar just because they know each other doesn’t mean the rest of the crew can’t have some disagreement of how yuri do things 🧍🏾♂️
Oh nevermind wrong commnets
@@sadoldguy4380 if you play the quest you would know that in the future Estelle will leave the capital and live in Hailure
and i wrote before that there is a big chance that vesbira guild will make Hailure as there base town since the city is close to the lower quarter
and the people love them for saving there city
so yuri and still can be together
@@bababobo5067 don't worry they love each other
bye the way even if he isn't her type she still love him
and when she said that she wasn't known Yuri very will at that time
Glad to see this video, I played the game on 360 in 2008 and absolutely loved it. I still watch videos about it and replay it from time to time.
Luke and Guy: Zaffre i thought we were your favorite
Zaffre: sorry guys it had to be said
That was an amazing video!
You did such a great job with the writing about of these two, and I would love to hear more spoiler-filled analysis videos like this!
i had a lot of fun writing this, so i'd love to do more videos in this style!
Always here on time for your videos!
Tales of vesperia is also my first and favourite tales and i am doing a tales of marathon juste like you (not in the same order) to forge my own opinion on the games.
I really like your content keep on the good work!
U Should Do More Of These Tales Of Duos Breakdowns, Like Luke & Guy, Per Example
Love you content! I really find your content both well analysed and funny at the same time
What's better than this: my favorite Tales of reviewer reviewing my favorite Tales of duo from my favorite Tales of video game.
Thanks for another great video! Would be really nice to see more videos focusing on the characters and themes of the Tales games in the future.
And people say that the cast of vesperia isn't interesting my goodness this video was a treat. Appreciate how you go into the depth of these 2 characters and how their relationship blossomed
I always felt that yuri saw Flynn as his brother and Estelle as his sister.
I don't know, but at least in the french version their dialogue at the end of the game during the last night before going to Tarquaron did sound like a (subtle) declaration of love in my opinion.)
Anyway Yuri and Estelle are amazing characters with absolutely great and brilliant chemistry. My most favorite Tales of duo is still Luke and Tear but Yuri and Estelle are now close second.
I would love to see you do one of these on Lloyd and Collette and how in hell he ended up with Sheena...
Excellent video ! Best duo of Tales of
I really need to replay this someday, my first playthough was with Japanese dub
you must be the most underrated youtuber and that means alot when i say this(because i know bobby scar haha)
Well then... Guess who just finished Tales of Vesperia, his first Tales game... Goddamn was that an experience. Y'know, I knew I was gonna like it before I even started playing, due to my incredible weakness for epic, well, tales. But here's my first timer's impressions anyway:
+ The beginning in Zafias all the way to the woods, that's magical.
(This, I feel, would be easily mitigated if there were just a few more anime-style cutscenes mixed in, to help your imagination do the work)
All in all however, through the ups and downs, it was a beautiful, at times brilliant, at times heartfelt, at times mirthful, journey.
This is also one of my favorite duos in tales ( with Luke and Tear) but I really feel the justice theme should’ve been extended even thought I wasn’t really that all crazy when Yuri kills because my first tales I played and beaten was abyss when they kill people because they have to ( even though Luke did had trouble killing people in the start of the game ).
i wish the theme of justice was the focus over the entirety of the game as well, but i'm still really happy with what we got all things considered!
Are you ever going to do a video on Alphen and Shionne or Tales Of Arise?
This was my first tale’s game well beside abyss but I only play it for a little bit but I finish this one!
This was a godly video
I still don't hate van or gauis even if xillia 2 never came out seeing his as a hero with muzet was cute as gaius was super nice to muzet which I liked
But yeah best villains overall which is why I don't like the hype bandwagon of berstera. It's a great game but not the best
Graces I would add to seeing a smaller villain cast but really well done and made me sad as lamda Sophie and thier creators could have been a family while asbel works with Sophie's fear of everyone dying.
Good vid man. Should do a video about Scarlet Nexus, i've read that the Vesperia's Team is behind that new IP.
i still love this game lol
Based
It's only because their taunts are the best don't lie
shoot, u rite
Any chance of a top 10 tales villians list?
Gunvolt 3 trailer is out.
Yep a good duo.
I think they r a great duo but I think it’s more of a sister and brother. But Judith and Yuri is another thing u should talk about
Its my favorit duo in the tales games too
Another great duo from vesperia is Raven and Karol. Vesperia has been my number 1 tales for about a decade and kinda hoping arise can change that.
Yuri definitely leaves an impression on me, especially since.he doesnt care about killing high ranking officals for Vesperias creed. I was a fan of Juri though
Why haven’t you reviewed Tales of heart r
Too bad that Yuri and Estelle are just friends. They could've been a great couple if they ever had interest with each other, I've would loved it they did that.:(
yeah but the game does not say it either way.
In terms of duo I like Luke and Guy or Tear and Luke
Imagine a vesperia sequel
They are both bae
bruh you gonna do p4g pc vs p5r?
I Agree they are a great Tales duo, But so are Sorey and Alisha even though sadly Alisha didn't get much story time or scenes on Zestiria. I feel like tales of zestiria was done a little dirty no romance, no friendship connections. That's probably why Tales of Berseria, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Xillia and Tales of Arise
great video
but there relationship are 100% romance and there is a lot of hints about that in the game and in the credit
Its like the difference between a conservative and a liberal. Yuri and Flynn that is.
My favorite duo are Velvet and Eleanor.
My personal favorite Duo is Luke and Tear
Why aren't they canon
My ranking of the Tales Duos (from the games I've played):
The translation changed and hid a ton of vital stuff to get this right.)
"Similarly, the eventuall successor to the throne( the kid) doesn't have a mentor, an adult to supervise him?"
My thoughts exactly.
@Shaman Xeed Understandable have a nice day. Be sure to keep clean and stay hydrated.
@Shaman Xeed Aww oh well.
I personally think everyone except Rita is straight but again that's just my opinion.
;p
