* I HOPE YOU SEE THIS * in regards to tops for those jars, in the uk we have a store called wilkinsons they sell these large white tubs of fish food in there(no doubt there will be a similar product in the us) the lids fit air tight and perfect on the vase, i use them for sealed plant ecospheres. i hope this helps :)
@@deansfishroom hi, thank you for your reply, unfortunatly i dont have any spares at this point in time and no longer use the fish food i described as i now keep marine rather than tropical. good luck finding an alternative :)
Of course I’m watching his two years later. But on your second piece with the vase I’m thinking a clear saucer liner and putting holes in it with a woodburning tool.
I think freaking out family is half the fun. A few years back I was dabbling in mycology and used the kitchen table to build my breathable grow jars. I think it was the highlight of my grandparents’ month because they had so much fun telling all of their friends about their granddaughter, the mad scientist. Grandpa would sit down next to me and ask me to explain everything to him. He would sit there with the silly grin on his face the whole time and I just knew he only understood half of what I was talking about, but he just enjoyed listening to how passionate I was about my projects. Then, invariably, he would ask me when my guppies will get big enough to eat. LOL I miss him so much.
Lol my godfather was a Fisherman for years one day I was showing him my fish room and he noticed my cherry shrimp and asked how long till they get big enough to eat.
This is genius, and much better for the fish than those store bought fry traps that only hold a cup of water, keeping those precious baby fish within an inch or two of the adults mouth. Plus you can put more than one female in the trap at a time and they have room to swim not just barely enough room to turn around. The black coloration also helps to keep them calm throughout their birthing process. Why didn't I think of this? Oh wait I'm the guy in the video ;) Can't wait to see what's next.....
Love your work, Dean! About those plastic lids. Depending on the type of plastic it is putting it under a hair dryer on its high setting for a while might warm it up enough to let you warp the center of the lid into the shape you want. :)
How do I stop my female guppies from jumping out over the basket into the tank tho? Lol I’ve tried almost everything at this point and they’re still jumping like no tomorrow. A few have ended up on the ground. Thanks in advance for your help
@@bigcheapskate simply lay a thin piece of plexiglass on top of the floating basket. You can get it from Home Depot. Or a piece of that cross-stitch plastic mesh from JoAnns or Michael’s. Just be sure to put it back on after feeding.
Another great DYI idea from the wisdom of great aquarists, your creativity is appreciated. Other retailers would rather sell us a finished product. The fact that you help us do ourselves when we can, makes us confident what you sell is what we need. Thanks again, Jim
I'm becoming a junior him with DIY and PVC contraptions. Imagine spending 3/4 of your free time trying to figure out how to rig the exit of a system or where you can find something to cushion a magnet against the tank and welcome to Dean&I's world. I might try to shoot a video of the magnet trick and submit it to Corey
This is brilliant. I can even see this working for African cichlids that are holding and ready to spit. You could even leave the female in afterwards to let her rest and eat. Love this!
This should be a lot of fun!!! Love the interaction between the two of you...you can tell you are true friends! Such a simple, yet perfect solution. Please keep the no fuss, easy does it, inexpensive tips coming!!!
For about 2 years I used the basket and tank as a simple sump. Fill the basket with polifill an sponge of your choosing than your heater and pump drop down into the tank. No Holes required and easy maintenance.
Hey just wanna say thank you guys for everything all the knowledge and entertainment any time I’m working on fish stuff got to have a you tube fish video in the background most of those are y’all keep up the good work
Not even going to lie, Dean is what i call "fish room daddy" that man is so straight to the point everytime he says something. Anytime someone tries to explain what he just said and does it wrong Dean chimes in with "yeah but no" and continues to give more examples. I honestly love Dean and i see why you do too, never met either of you but i respect you both. But really tho, more Dean is seriously what I want to see. Some other guy made a video on Dean doing baby brine and showing how it was done and that is my go to video, i had to favorite it because it was so hard to find. Does that man have a book becuase i want to show some support for my fish daddy! But not in a weird way, super respectful way!
I actually clicked on this thinking it was for a Fish Fry(Cooking) LOL I do hydroponics so I've been tapping into you guys air line tech. Great vids thanks.
I fix glasses at work all day long. Plastic frames of different grades always. I use a dry heater to mold and bend frames. TRY THE HAIR DRYER and water as needed to cool it. Love everything you all do. Tank on!
Awesome, hell yes want more. Love the combination of Dean an Cory, your funny informative an extremely helpful. We want more. Plus Dean quit your job an join Cory Pleassssseeee 🤞🤞
What an awesome idea! I am totally going to buy the supplies for this project and make this soon. Looking forward to next week diy with Dean. Thank you. 😁
Love the small foam strip idea! I’ve been using these baskets for a while but always zip tied pipe insulation or pool noodle to the top edges.. this gives a much cleaner look thou!
Table top Tuesday love it guys keep up the grate work love from the uk 🇬🇧ps I always end up spending money when I watch your videos just ordered my pond basket so I can try it for my african cichild fry thanks again

DIY backgrounds. I paint mine black. 1 part paint, 2 parts Elmers glue. Takes a couple coats but peels right off if you don’t like it. You can use acrylic craft paint to make it cheep and easy
I made one of these about 2 months ago for my long fin danios to spawn in and it works great. Threw in a spawning mop and they were happy. I have used it for my larger guppies but they do have to be rather large to not fit through the holes on the sides. I used foam pipe insulation and/or pool noodle with a slit cut in it to get it to float.
Just a suggestion: If you turn those blue lids upside down they will drain inside the egg hatching vases. I use that trick ink the kitchen when I can't find a lid that fits the pot I'm using. A larger lid will always drip outside the pot....unless you turn it upside down.
I use the cutlery baskets with suction cups for my snail eggs. I don't know about America, but in Australia you can buy clear planters and saucers. Perhaps Dean could use the saucers for lids.
I use a bit of CLR first on used tanks.....gets the calcium right off....same thing with Vinegar....rinse it well CLR is safe for coffee makers and works wonders there...so I tried it on free 20g test tank.....looks new, and still holds for 3 years later
Hi dean and cory I love that idea it’s quick and easy. Please make more videos like this. I’ve taking a peanut butter jar clean it out and I put cermaric rings and poly foam too I drill holes in the cap and at the bottom of the plastic jar and put a air line to push the water through.
Maybe an auto-feeder of snails that someone said on a past live, Like a bottle with adult snails and holes that just the smaller babies can get out and get caught by cichlids and such!
I been using the same system for years and I found if the top is close to the water level the females will jump out back into the tank. Keeping the top 30mm above the water will stop them. Even though a couple of more determined fish still managed to get back into the tank. I use office plastic trays they are a lot cheaper than the plastic pond pots. Office tray$2.00 pond tray $12. I also found that if you just let it float in the tank with some weed in it and around it the fry will make their way into it to stay safe while the females are in the tank.

Hey Dean, You might be able to silicone the excess foam from the breeder basket on the lip of the blue lid and make a seal around the jar.

I’ve used these for a years now and they work great. The difference is that I keep my adults in the tank and net the fry out of the basket.
Fun with Dean!! Awesome 🤩
Try a heat gun and acrylic with some sort of a mold. Maybe try polymer clay to make your mold bake it then use heat gun with acrylic like plexiglass
Great advice!!
If you're worried about the foam coming out, a few well-placed zip ties would hold forever.
