Born 1886 in Hamburg, Ernst Thälmann was one of the prominent leaders of the german worker's movement after the death of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg in 1919.
From 1919 up to his death in 1944, Ernst Thälmann, now the leader of the KPD, fought against reactionaries and nationalists and was one of the most famous personalities in the GDR, even naming a pioneer organisation after him (Pionierorganisation Ernst Thälmann).
