Commonly referred to as "snubbing." I worked on a Halliburton snubbing unit back in 1978. Nowadays there are dozens of companies and private concerns running snubbing units like you show here, as well as "rig assist" units that are the same thing but don't require counterbalance winches or other means of moving pipe from and to the ground level pipe racks. Rig assist units assemble their apparatus on a workover unit, which does all the pipe picking up and laying down. Both types can move pipe in or out of the hole under ridiculous pressures -- so that killing the well with heavy liquids isn't necessary for completions or maintenance/repair. Some formations will never come back once they're killed, so economically, snubbing is a pretty powerful tool.
