Hey Mike. Few things. It’s not a great idea to tow a rwd car with the drive wheels on the ground and the driveshaft connected. It will burn up the trans...either put the rear of the car on tow dolly or put on a car trailer. Check to see if your shifter bushings are OK. These old ones were known for worn/sloppy bushings with age. It’ll make it difficult to get the right gear. Also check vacuum etc. hate to see you put a trans in before full diag by you. That is a California car based on the service sticker on the driver door and info on radio. Check your calipers to make sure the hoses and pistons aren’t leaking- that’s probably why the chrome is peeeling bad. And above all CONGRATS on the car!!! Very cool find. I’ve been a subscriber since you barely had 100 - great entertainment. Keep it up!!!
Thanks for the tips. I know about towing with the rear wheels on the ground, but because this car already needs a transmission I wasn't concerned. The previous owner tried everything to get it to work, but there's no reverse which is a common problem. I'll check out the calipers! Thanks!!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike the w126 chassis Mercedes received the first version of the G-Tronic transmission. I have really like your SEC You got. I love the w126 chassis, they have a very stately and intimidating appearance. But intimidating is what they can be to work on too. That's sad yours doesn't have a reverse, but are you entirely sure reverse is completely gone. It wasn't as simple as the selector bushing being worn resulting in the selector being in reverse but the linkage didn't actually select reverse? Or the shift modulator? What about the fuel pressure regulator? This affects shifts by throwing off the amount of vacuum the car receives. I'm just curious because I haven't heard of Daimler-Benz era Mercedes having transmissions really die. I've heard of them act like they're dying due to other things completely unrelated to the transmission making them mess up. My transmission shifted funny due to the pcv hose. 3rd gear would slip under a certain amount of throttle input, but once that hose was changed (and only that hose) it shifted beautifully. It would also bang into reverse and spin the tires a bit, and that was fixed with the hose too. The Daimler-Benz era Mercedes are all worth saving and they are really well engineered and super high quality, but they can be a big pain to deal with when they get to the age where everything is wearing out. I asked these questions because a transmission is so expensive, and with an old Mercedes 9 times out of 10 the solution to a problem is because of a problem elsewhere on the car that is a cheap and easy fix. Oh, one important thing with the w126 chassis and r107 v8s is the timing chain and the guide rails. If you haven't checked out Kent Burgsma's videos at Mercedessource, I highly recommend that you watch them. He has decades of experience with Daimler-Benz era Mercedes and has some clever solutions to things. He has a ton of insight that all Mercedes owners can certainly benefit from. @@jacobbelcher3512 Nothing "Tronic" about that transmission, purely mechanical. Hey Mike, I have a 1988 W126, and I had problems with the trans too. It wouldn't shift out of 1st gear, and also had problems getting it into gear from park. My mechanic was able to correct the issues with 2 simple fixes. The first, the reprogrammed the computer (apparently these 30 year old "classics" have 2 of them); and the second fix was to replace the gear shift bushing. Trans works great now. Hope this info helps...
I am making the assumption the transmission shown on the ground is either a "used good" or rebuilt. If that was included with your purchase, you did well. It is really nice to see a car of that vintage (nearly 25 years old) in such nice original albeit sunburned condition. It is relatively free of whiskey dents and parking lot swine imprints which says a lot for the history. I am looking forward to see your progress.
Nice Merc, and with the biggest V8! Remember not to tow the vehicle with the driven wheels on the ground because it will cause damage to the transmission (unless you don't care because whole transmission is bad). Kent from MercedesSource made a video about rescuing many W126 300SD and showed the proper way to tow a RWD vehicle with A/T on a dolly. It takes some time, as you have to unbolt the driveshaft and tie some things up, so the transmission doesn't spin together with the wheels and with the engine shut off.

Awesome! Two notes that are noteworthy (at least to me LOL) 1) I had a black I think it was 1984 500SEC which to this day may be the most responsive quickest car I've ever owned! (I've owned, I'm counting about 14 cars in my lifetime - maybe 4 purchased just for resale - and I think about 7 of them were Mercedes. 2) The one time I saw Johnny Carson in person was at the old Spago restaurant on the Sunset strip (much cooler than its later location in Beverly Hills) where he had arrived and was driving his at that time new C4 Corvette (his was indeed probably a 1984 model). At that time It was basically brand-new and it looked pretty snazzy. I think that Carson dude may have been rich (LOL!).
Ha! He did have some money. Back in 2002 or so, Ed McMahon came on our morning show in Orlando. He was supposed to stay for 10 minutes for the interview, but he stayed 2 hours and did the entire show. He was a great interview and very very funny!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike That is awesome! Ed certainly seem to be quite a character. My little (or not so little, depending on how one looks at it, I suppose) experience with being part of the Tonight Show family was that I did on-camera acting (I was sort of one of Jay's version of Johnny's "Art Carson Players") and later, mostly voiceover, from about 1996 through 2007 (pretty much being their go-to guy for character V/O from 2000 through 2007). With that came the privilege of driving to NBC and getting to walk the lot, which included the joy of seeing the menagerie of cars owned by Jay Leno showing up - a different car almost every time I would pass by that coveted parking spot for The Host (If you catch various retrospectives of Johnny Carson, you will occasionally see him pulling into that very spot with his white C4 Corvette). Nice choice on getting the uber-Merc. A lot of marque experts say the 560SEC is the best overall car Mercedes-Benz have produced yet, it's still very much the engineer's car so it's still fairly easy to work on and not full of computers. Now's a very good time to buy one, especially one that needs some attention, as prices for them are going up rapidly everywhere, which means it won't be long before the values of them in the US start to spiral too. Keep it for ten years and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a $100,000 vehicle. Just watch out for rust in the rear shelf behind the back seats, sunroof leaks can cause that area to get flooded with rain water with catastrophic results, though that shouldn't be an issue for a Californian car...
Back then Mercedes were still heavy, well built and rugged. (I heard Brinks used to use them to carry cash around.) I personally prefer those squared-off, angular lines over the new aerodynamic look. Please paint it black and keep it for yourself! By the way, that was very clever of you to send Randy an email - if you had called him you would be on the phone for 45 minutes just to get that one tip... he is the motormouth of UA-cam. 🤔
I subscribed!!! Love this car so much, when a family member passed I inherited his 89 560 SEC with an AMG body kit and lorinser rims and spoiler. 15 yeas later I regret selling that car so much.
I live in Southern California, but my goal is to move to Idaho, Oklahoma or Colorado in the near future. The reason is simple: Peace and quiet. Down here my backyard is only 30ft x 5ft, which means I can hear when my neighbors fart.
I'd be a little worried about driving a nice car in Oklahoma. I hear plenty of horror stories about all the hail storms, and how they can total a vehicle. Just drive a beater in that state, and you'll have nothing to worry about.
Nice video. My only car is benz and benz only. But from the dashboard it is 1989 or 1988 and it is very easy to repair the transmissions in these models. Keep going 😊

Hello! Yes, it’s a city called Tulsa in the state of Oklahoma. We have a left land law. On highways, traffic can only use the left lane for passing. It’s fine to drive in the middle lane with a trailer. Thanks for watching!!
Hey Mr Monkey Mike. I got a question for you. I have a 2000 Mercedes SLK230. The manual says to use E10 Premium gas. Cha-Ching! Love the sound of that!!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike Mercedes-Benz will probably never make another car truly like it so they're not going to get any less rare...
Awesome video Mike ! What a BEAUTY 👍😃
Lovely looking car, once you have her cleaned and fixed up she will look gorgeous.
Cracking purchase.
Thanks!
Great video. Nice car. Can’t wait to see the progression
Hey Mike, have had several Benzes myself, from a 62 220s to a 280se from 69! And 3 or 4 in between. Good luck from Australia
Thanks Mark! Sounds like you have a nice collection!!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike Had my friend..😡
Back then Mercedes were still heavy, well built and rugged. (I heard Brinks used to use them to carry cash around.) I personally prefer those squared-off, angular lines over the new aerodynamic look. Please paint it black and keep it for yourself! By the way, that was very clever of you to send Randy an email - if you had called him you would be on the phone for 45 minutes just to get that one tip... he is the motormouth of UA-cam. 🤔
Nice. I have a Lapis Blue 1982 380SEC. Great csrs.
Are you sure about the year 1995? Thought these C126 were built until 1991 and that 1995 was deep in the territory of the W140 or C140 chassis....
No Troll 1990, 560 sec not 1995
I subscribed!!! Love this car so much, when a family member passed I inherited his 89 560 SEC with an AMG body kit and lorinser rims and spoiler. 15 yeas later I regret selling that car so much.
They are GREAT cars... thanks for subscribing!!
I own a near mint 1990 560 SEC, its the best car once she is sorted. You can drive it a million miles if you take care of it.
Wow! nice! I’m hoping to get lots of miles from her
Yes all you actually had to do is leave it in park put the E brake on to help and pull right out from under it slowly.
Next time, I’ll try that!
I live in Southern California, but my goal is to move to Idaho, Oklahoma or Colorado in the near future. The reason is simple: Peace and quiet. Down here my backyard is only 30ft x 5ft, which means I can hear when my neighbors fart.
I’d recommend Oklahoma. Even if your near enough to hear your neighbor fart, the wind will blow it away from you!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike 🤣🤣👍 I'd be proud to call myself an Oklahomie... no doubt about that.
What a great car. Looks expensive but I look forward to watching your adventure.
Hopefully it’ll be an inexpensive fix! Lol
Tell me more about transmission repair!!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike it is easy to repair because all you need is to change the clutches. There are 4 clutches , 3 front and one is for rear or reverse
I’ll have to google this!!
You got yourself a new subscriber! I own a 1986 560sec and been thinking about doing some repairs and restorations on it. Will be cool to see what you do to it and apply it to my car.
Fantastic! I’ll try to be super helpful!
Nice car Mike looking forward to seeing bring it back to life and " on the road again" just like Williy Nelson says.
Have fun
Love your channel Im a Mercedes lover.
We're in this rebuild together then!! Thanks!
Hello Mike from Jordan ....you have good job man ......i am one of Mercedes lovers around the world hope you the best
Jordan! Wow!! Thanks for watching!!
All Americans love Harley-Davidson riding King of Jordan. He seems more like he'd be a good friend, than a King...
@@MonkeyWrenchMike
you deserve to flow
Hey mike, I am an new subscriber on your channel. Just a suggestion on your next car with no reverse just use pull up the the e brake and pull forward with the pulling vechicle and the vechicle will roll off.
Looking forward too you working on a proper Mercedes Mike
I finally found the time to look at your channel and i t was definitely worth it!
Yahoo!! Glad you liked!
Wait, I heard somewhere you should not tow an automatic mb with the rear axle on the ground because there’s no pressure in the tranny to keep it happy. Could have put it on the trailer backwards with front wheels locked. My 2 cents.
Randy sent me.
Nice car Mike. I SURE love your videos.
Thanks!!
Nice find. And I like your spoonerism moment 15:13.
Nice ride. I like cars built like tanks.
Congrats! What a found! I would buy from you!
That's a Benz Mike! Lovely, looking forward to rep videos ;-)
Welcome to Tulsa Oklahoma I hope you enjoy your stay 😁
I could be making a permanent move there...
Cool it be nice to see you here
Awesome Video Mike.. I Sure enjoy Them..
Share these videos on Facebook & Twitter. On another note, check out Stauffers Garage. He's a professional auto detailer. Tells you what the products are and how to use them. Great vids. Another fantastic purchase, Mike. That car will be a beauty.
Will do. Thanks!
i thought you are a very quiet person when i watched you along with randy in his copart videos and its amazing how lively your vlogs is hehe, keep up the good work MWM!
Thank you!!
OMG so cool that Car:-) and the Big one the 560, in Germany this cars are gone from the Streets, they rust so bad here
Love your Mercedes collection, you own all my favorites. you just gained a new subscriber!!!
Thanks Rambo! Appreciate that!
New viewer great video
Just love the car
We have a W126 300SE from 1989 it’s a very close cousin
Things to look for will def be brakes had to redo all of ours
And half baked repairs ( scary) someone loved silicon with ours except it don’t fix oil leaks on low level oil sensors!! New parts do that
Oh not a good idea to tow with the tail shaft in with drive wheels on the ground Can do damage to the trans
Cheers
Thanks for the comment! I knew the tranny was bad, so I went ahead and towed it that way because it was easier to get off the trailer.
Right now it only runs for about 20 seconds then dies. I’m doing a video on it. Any ideas on why it won’t stay running??
Monkey Wrench Mike all good
Can’t wait to see this Merc progress
Cheers from Australia
Monkey Wrench Mike
Hmm running for 20 seconds not sure
A relay cutting out
Fuel pump maybe
Something is cutting off
Wish I could give you a better answer
looking forward to seeing the transmission swap, hope you did your research about that :D
Mike, LOVE the new Benz. Can't wait for more vids on this one. Also the other S class ones. 👌
Those old Mercs are tanks BTW.💜
Going to Randy do make a good team I never met you it wasn't for him now when you need Randy's Lyft change out the transmission LOL love you block man keep up the good work
Nice car Mike! Love your channel!
Entertaining mike thanks.
Classic Mercedes, back when they were built to last. That old body style is the best.
Found you through Randy.
Thanks Ronnie!
Mike. Great video. Great car .. needs some love but hey... they dont build them like that any more. That my friend is a solid car. Expensive to repair but a solid car. Regards Andy
Thanks Andy!!
Mike, your videos are very funny and entertaining! Loving your content!
Bobby Brown had one of these. He rapped about it. Classy.
When you get down to shining up the dash Trim Shine by Stoner Car Care will alleviate the bleaching.
Great car....keep it up👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
OMG- I just read through some viewers comments. Hey mike your going to mess up that TRANSMISSION using a dolly to pick up the RWD card that has a bad TRANSMISSION. You asked for viewers. Lol. You got it buddy👍🏻👍🏻. Lol. Have a blast 😂😂
I got it and then some... lol
Beautiful car, it's a keeper

hello mike....as an austrian (-europe) i am able to find oklahoma as well as tulsa on the map.....would it be vice versa? :-) i have 2 questions....do you have a right lane law? in europe in general you have to drive on the right lane....i saw you following a large truck in middle lane.... and in europe in general with any kind of trailer you have to watch a 50 mph (80 kmh) limit? applies for small cars as well as 40 ton trucks..............???
So, will it hurt the engine if I have to run E15 Premium or lower E10 or E15 octane?. Can I run non-ethanol premium? I have been getting all kind of answers. I love the older Mercedes. I had a ‘74 240D in ‘74
Taz Mod non ethanol 93 octane is the best if you can find it.
Don't use E15. Lower octane won't hurt it but it's best to use the right octane in the long term and for fuel economy.
Hey Mike, Randy sent me. Stay 35 4ever
I’ve stayed 35 for 21 years!! Lol
Great video, but the fake sounds are way to many and are very annoying!
Most people know that car Mercedes 560 sec from the movie Roadhouse was Patrick Swayze.
Any Plan On Buying An AMG Car?
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The mold in the rear carpet makes me think that this car has spent a good part of its life in the ocean. The condition of the rest of this car confirms it!
Hi Mike totally agree with you that Mercedes were better made in the 90s so much more reliable and had more panache or is it because we are getting old in the tooth and they don't make em like that anymore 👴🐒 . As always flower pot crack on and see you next time 👍😃
Gary...... England 🇬🇧
Very well said! Thanks Gary!!
You are so funny mike love the sound effects 😂😂😂
New sub.. came from auto auction rebuilds
Welcome aboard! Thanks!!
Hello Mike, I’m a new subbed. Really enjoy your contents. My all time favorite Merc is the 1995 Merc E320 Convertible. Nicholas Cage drove one in the movie “Face Off”
Yes!! I love those too! I’ve been looking for one but they are hard to find!
First!! OK, I'm not first but great video anyway!!
Thanks Randy! Did you hear your shoutouts??
Auto Auction Rebuilds probably could have just set the emergency brake and drove out from under it.
14:20 found out why it won't go in reverse.
Beautiful piece of C126, (for how much you payed it for) when you fix it i recommend you to hold it for yourself. Btw.where are the W140is, cant see em on parking lot, and also one Bmw?
Keep up, for your chanel from Croatia with love. 👍🇭🇷
The W140 is back from storage for another video. I’m going to change the valve body and see if that fixes a delay when shifting into R and D. Oh, the BMW is gone... lol
Better to use a camera mount ... keep the hands on the wheel and concentrate on driving. Peace and love
She won't go in reverse anyway. You don't need the mirror until you fix the transmission.
Ok, I will let's get after it
Gene Pitney once sang 24 Hours From Tulsa, the question I have is which form of transport did he have?
If he was walking he'd probably still be within the city limits, anything else blows my mind.
howcome you didnt use the ML to tow it?
The ML is still at the body shop getting it's B-pillar fixed. Once it's out, it'll be me "go getter" car!
get trans, rebuilt, to be on a safer side👍🇬🇧
vinly paint for carpets
Keep coming with w140 content please

When you said look how pretty she is it made me laugh my boss says it's pretty make it run that's what I pay you for LOL
I like it! Nice car. Should give some good content.
