  • Chime recently released his new album "Aetherborne" on his label: Rushdown. A few songs from this album were submitted to me in my Dubstep submissions recently, so I decided to give the full album a listen since those singles were so good. If you're a fan of melodic dubstep and/or color bass -- you're probably gonna love this album.

Phenomenal album, chime has really evolved as an artist over the past 3 years.
Also, Mindburn is mile and away my favourite track here. That whole track is an acid trip and a half and I'm here for it.

In my honest opinion, everything was incredible. Chime is an artist who has innovated and evolved throughout the years since he has been making music. He’s probably one of my favourite artists ever. The way he makes colour bass is amazing. Combining melodic elements with heavy drops is wonderful to hear

I still love this album a ton. All of the tracks are at least good, the cohesion and overall storytelling is brilliant, and it showcases Chime’s insane sound design super well. My favorite album of this year so far full stop!!!
I also completely agree with your thoughts on Bittersweet Butterflies because it’s my favorite track on here too (also my favorite song from him period).

I listened to this whole album on my flight to Missouri last week, and I decided to rank it today. Here are my thoughts:
    17 - ??? (7/10)
It's a short outro so I don't have much to say about this track, but for a sub one minute outro, a 7 is fantastic. It works very well with the next track though.
    16 - Into the Machine (8/10)
This serves as a perfect intro and lead in to From Atoms to Pixels, and it sets a mysterious vibe that I thoroughly enjoyed.
    15 - Homeworld (8.5/10)
I loved this track the first time I listened to it and it perfectly fit as my plane was taking off, but I don't find it as memorable as the others.
    14 - Beyond the Peak (9/10)
I overplayed this when it first came out before the whole album was released, so I'm quite overexposed to it. Still a great track though.
    13 - Cloud Factory (9.5/10)
From here on out, all of these songs are incredible, even if they rank lower like this one. I remember first hearing this song when Colour Bass Volume Three got announced, and that was my big exposure to color bass, so I have this song to thank for getting me into the genre. After revisiting it in this album, it doesn't feel quite as groundbreaking as when I first listened to it because there are tons of other exceptional songs on this album.
    12 - Bloom (10/10)
All of the older singles (especially this, which came out in 2020) that existed before this album got released will generally score lower for me because they don't give me that new, curious feeling that the others did, but that doesn't mean they aren't good. I still love this just as much as when I first listened to it in 2022, and because of its staying power, it earns the first 10/10.
    11 - Subterrain (10/10)
The deep nature of this song captivated me upon my first listen. It gives me the feeling of swimming in a deep cave with the sound design. From here on out, it's going to be difficult to express why I think certain songs are better than others because they are all equally fantastic.
    10 - Chrysalism (10/10)
Chime doing Drum and Bass is amazing, and the atmosphere of this song works so well with the genre.
    9 - Mindburn (10/10)
This song had the most memorable first listen of all of them. Making pure chaos sound this good is tricky to achieve, but it worked it. I don't think this song is as replayable as the others, but the first experience blew me away.
    8 - Zephyr (10/10)
I didn't know that this song was a remake of an old Chime song from 2015 when I first heard it, but this revamp took his old style and fused it perfectly with color bass and culminated in a monumental improvement over the original.
    7 - Starstorm (10/10)
Honestly, this would have ranked this dead last if I made this earlier. I absolutely love the 2017 OG Starstorm (first heard it in 2020), and when I first heard this I didn't think it was as good as the original. After some time, now I think they are on par with each other. Like Chime did for Zephyr, this combines the old and the new to create a fresh sound, and I think it turned out even better than Zephyr (I also didn't have any clue about the original Zephyr). Having this be the final track was a great choice as well as it concludes the album with a bang.
    6 - Sherwood (10/10)
This is another rendition of an older Chime track being remade, but I believe the version on this album is not new (it's "Sherwood - 2022" from Rushdown 100). Regardless, this song is fantastic and nails the magical feeling.
    5 - Escape Velocity (10/10)
The top 5 are some of my favorite songs at the current moment. Everything about this song is phenomenal. The pre-drop vocals get you hyped for the drops, which are unlike anything I've ever heard before from Chime, and the progression to DnB is so satisfying.
    4 - From Atoms to Pixels (10/10)
This is one of my favorite vocal performances on the album, and it fits so well as the first song after Into the Machine. The drops in this, as with almost all of the songs, are super euphoric and get straight into the action.
    3 - Intermolecular Lullaby (10/10)
The song that grew on me the most. I didn't care for it for a long time, but recently I've began to appreciate it more. Chime's vocals are the highlight of the song, and they elevate the fantastic chill vibe of the production.
    2 - Bittersweet Butterflies (10/10)
Color house is a fantastic genre, especially when it's of this quality. The progression never leaves you feeling bored, which is commendable for a 6:25 track. This also takes me back to the first Chime song I ever listened to, which was his Talus Battle remix (also electro/color house). That song was one of my favorites back in 2020 when I was younger, and now I can relive those memories through this song.
    1 - Aetherborne (10/10)
This song has no dull moments. It's fun all throughout, and I feel like this highlights all of the best aspects of this album: fantastic production, unique sound design, creative concepts, etc. The fact that it's breaks makes it more interesting, as I feel breaks is an underappreciated genre. The buildup around three minutes is incredible, and the silence moments before the climax hits led to one of the most satisfying first listens I've ever had. I haven't talked much about transitions, but the slow fade in to Starstorm is fantastic as well. I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I stand by it.
Overall, this is my favorite album by a long shot. 12/17 songs at a 10/10 truly incapsulates the quality this album provides.
This is also the longest comment I have ever made on a UA-cam video, so that's something.
