1985 Singer Sewing Machine VS my new Singer Tradition | Abi’s Den ✂️🧵🌸

  • Is your Gran's sewing machine better than yours or has 35 years of technology improved machines and everything just keeps on getting better, more sleek, maybe quieter and maybe more powerful? Let's put the machines to the test!
If we do a comparison with costs and inflation, the spend nowadays isn’t anywhere as popular as before, it isn’t necessary now, we can have the same features for a lot less money. So the comparison I chose was mechanical based, a 1985 machine vs a 2020 machine, not an affordable comparison

Very helpful video, I have had my 6235 for years, bought 2nd hand and I'm now at a level with my sewing where I want to learn to use all the attachments so seeing the buttonholer in action was fantastic. Thank you! So happy these older machines are holding their value after so many years.

Just bought an older singer and my local repairman says singer changed about 15 years ago and these older models are excellent. It looks in perfect condition and has the original manual and documentation. Wish my son luck as he requested a seeing machine to do repairs on his kids clothes.

I have the singer 6235 from the early 80’s and it’s still going today! Barley and maintenance was needed. In place bobbin winder was one of singers selling points. I have newer machines but I just love how the 6235 sews. So smooth

My singer is not getting good speed control any more. The foot control was replaced many years ago but now it only sews at half speed. It’s sewing well in all other ways and I have all the attatchments. The high slope shank is a plus.

I have the 6233 and replaced the worm gear on the feed dog bar but it had to mess up timing. Any videos on timing of 6233 or 6235. Also the stitch length is small at all lengths and feed dogs pull fabric to the right. Thanks for any help. There’s an unthreaded “screw” on bottom of mechanism to left on feed dog bar -not sure but it might have something to do with stitch length. Any info on that.

@@mammaubear8647 the only thing I can really say is obviously it’s way out of time and it has to be done in a special way. I am one of the rare one who do this work for both the hook and feed timing. You can search UA-cam and see if there’s any info. The 700-6235 have the same mechanism and get timed basically the same way. I have had customers ship me machines to repair depending on where you’re located and shipping costs.

Thanks Abi, wanted to see how Singer Tradition sewed, and the comparison was an added bonus. I have a 15 year old singer, (that needs repairing, and also noisy, and thought i'd a new one). Singer Tradition just arrived, but can't try it, as they said they'd not accept it back. So it is good to see you do the comparison, and like some of the other reviewers, your gran's machine both looks and works much better.

I bought mine in the mid eighties. It was top of the range in the mechanical machine range. The only reason I changed was because I started making quilts. I used this for garments and curtains etc. It was easy to use and eventually I needed to fix the foot. It was controlled with an air switch. The accoutrements were beautifully stored in the top tray. It needed special bobbins and had automatic tension which was very easy to adjust. The clip on feet were great. It’s still going well but I keep it for sentimentality.

I have a janome/new home computerised machine which I bought in 1992/ 93 for the princely sum of £900, which was a lot of money then to us, still is. I bought it with good intentions of making my daughters dresses which I was going to machine embroider but never did that unfortunately. I absolutely love it and it was worth every penny. The man who services it for me loves it too, he says it’s quality. Like you said about the old singer though mine is very heavy as well, definitely not easily transportable. Jane.

I tried using a free Euro-pro 375 to start learning on, but it turns out the spring for the zigzag function is stretched out and would be a nightmare to replace. Love this video Abi. Just a thought: maybe pitch like for like - so the brother you showed first which was at the same price point after adjusting for inflation would give a more accurate picture. If I could only have one machine (nightmare!!) it would be a modern machine. Probably Brother or Janome. It's great if you can have a vintage and a modern machine - best of both worlds. Look forward to more comparison video's - thanks for your generosity in spending the time Abi.

I found this vintage singer exactly like this one you have, for a good price and i think the model is a singer 4662 chic. And also when there is a Robles if it will be affordable for reparations and services… I am really trying to find out more informations on the internet and here on UA-cam about this vintage sewing machine 4662 and I don’t see much,so I don’t know exactly what to do :/ .

The 1985 Singer for sure. I bought this machine in 1986 new. I don't remember what I paid. Then I bought a Singer serger in 1995. Then in 1997 I lost both machine due to flooding. About 4 years ago I purchased the Heavy Duty Singer Serger and the Heavy Duty Singer 4452. I love the new serger. But the singer 4452 doesn't compare to my 6325. Yes it has more option for type of stitches. But I find myself using the same stitches my older model had. I am now watching various market places to buy and replace my old 1985 Singer. Now I have a great grand daughter soon to be 8years old. that loves me making things for her.

But since I own a tradition 2273 you can change the foot pressure if you open the left upper place ! I found out when I was cleaning the machine! It is a plastic screw over the needle bar! Just like the heavy duty but inside!

Happy Mothers day Abi and everyone else here. I really need your help choosing a sewing machine. Options in my city are Singer Brother Janome , Paff, Berinina, and Viking. Now Paff , Bernina and Viking could be solid but they are not so popular as Singer and others in my country hence the service might be expensive. With singer and Janome even locally the parts would be available. Should I just go for a basic model in SInger or Brother and be happy with that try it for a few years and then decide on the next upgrade? I don't know how the learning is going to be for me as I am depending mostly on youtube experts like you.
My other thoughts, I don't need a one step button hole maker, more steps more learning is what i think,
I don't think I need an automatic thread dropper. I feel it would be embarrassing not to be able to put the thread myself on another machine.
what do i definitely looking for? twin needle possibility and should be ready to sew jeans. Should I just spend a few years on a sewing machine like tradition and go up later? May be then I would understand really what I want...
am i on the right track please help me?

    • @AbisDen
      @AbisDen  4 роки тому +6

The sewing world is a cartel. The sewing machine retailers (known as dealers by the manufacturers) are told to sell the machines at certain fixed prices. There are some companies who don’t follow this strictly, because this is an illegal practice, and places like Lidl are HUGE accounts that you would be able to shift literally hundreds of a companys machine in just one week alone, so they have a strong purchase power. yet both Janome and Brother have removed accounts from dealers who do not comply. Janome did it with me and brother did it with a retailer I know. They’re unashamedly get away with it, but until places like the CMA in the UK pick it up with enough complaints they will have their wrists slapped. It’s like buying milk from the supermarket, all supermarkets sell at similar prices, they all then have offers on, but none of the supermarkets have the same deal at any one time... it’s to drive footfall their way. They think we don’t know... we know
