I'm still very sad after losing my boy to DCM 4 months ago at the age of 8 yrs 5 mo. He'd never had the extensive testing that this boy had, and he really showed no signs of a problem until the last week of his life. Thankfully he was never in pain and passed peacefully sleeping close to me. He lives on in his youtube channel ua-cam.com/channels/JYbGiCzgBrwOL_qO4e3HaQ.html

thank you very much for this video. I've owned my 1st Dobermann in 1987, but due to work and not being home, I have not owned one for past 10 years. None of mine ever suffered DCM, I think it is much more prevalent now than it was 20-30 years ago. Looking into getting a new girl in the next year or so, so this video was greatly appreciated. Very Handsome boy --- you have a new subscriber

Thank you so much!! The genes are everywhere but the best bet is to go to a reputable breeder who does all the health testing and will support YOU for the life of the dog. Good luck and do share when your pup has come home!

@@BeauOnTheGo_DC do you know of any reputable breeders you could recommend? I live in one of the 13 original colony states, so MD is not that far to travel for me. Probably not looking to get a puppy for about 1 year, but it is never too early to start researching to find a good breeder, that puts health of their dogs and litters above all else.

Start with the breeder listing on DPCA.org - they have high standards for ethical breeders. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing the information. Did you have your dobi DNA tested for DCM? I just received the results for mine. He is 4.5, and he has the DCM2 gene. So, I am consulting my vet, but the next step will likely be the test in your video. Luckily, there is a CVCA clinic near me.

It all starts with a reputable breeder who does all the health testing possible (annual heart tests, OFA for eyes, hips, etc.), considers the coefficient of inbreeding, and more. DCM is tricky because you can have a dog with both markers who will never develop it and a dog with no markers who will. Beau has one genetic marker for it, so this isn’t surprising but since he is so young, it is disheartening. The best thing you can do is to get into CVCA for an echocardiogram and a 24-hour Holter monitor. Early detection is best because there is a medicine that can prolong life. DCM is not curable and can result in sudden death so the sooner you know the readings the better. Wishing you the best of luck with your boy!!! Happy New Year!

So sorry to hear that the more I look at this breed the more red flags I see as DCM is an absolute killer how did the breeder community let it get this bad? I had a French Bulldog and I new they had a lot of issues but assumed that Dobermans would be a much healthier breed with less medical issues to contend with but I guess not..

The fact is that it is not the breeding community of reputable breeders - those who put more time and money into the breed than they will ever get back. The good breeders who test their dogs, thoughtfully pair sires and dams, who show their dogs, and who ensure the pups go to good homes. The issue is the ‘backyard’ breeders who indiscriminately breed just to have puppies to sell. The average person isn’t educating themself on what to look for - they just want a puppy and they want it immediately. Frenchies have their own set of health predispositions, that I bet you know. 🙂 It is great that you took your time to find a good breeder to give you and your pup the best chance at a healthy life. DCM and anything genetic is a crap shoot at best. Same for humans.
