- Pest management is an essential part of running a food business operation. Pests can contaminate food, damage equipment, and harm the health and reputation of the business. Therefore, food business operators should implement a pest management plan that includes the following steps:
Identify the types of pests that are likely to infest the premises, such as rodents, insects, or birds.
Prevent pest entry by sealing gaps, holes, and cracks, installing screens and nets, and removing clutter and debris.
Monitor pest activity by using traps, baits, or sticky boards, and inspecting the premises regularly for signs of infestation.
Control pest infestation by using appropriate methods, such as physical removal, depending on the type and severity of the problem.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the pest management plan by keeping records of pest activity, control measures, and corrective actions.
Review and update the pest management plan as needed to ensure its compliance with legal and industry standards.
