I normally stitch 9oz leather. Use the same groover you have. I use braided thread and about the same stitches per inch. Instead of using the iron to make the holes I use the iron to mark the hole placement. I hit the iron just enough to make marks in the leather. I put holes in the leather using a #23 sewing machine needle in a drill press. I just punch through the leather with the drill press turned off. Takes a little time but like it better than fighting the iron. The only difference is it won’t give you a zig zag line. I use harness needles that fit the #23 holes perfectly. No need for an awl and pliers. Makes it much more enjoyable for me. I do use a pony also.

What does it do by hitting the stitches down at the end

Isn't a pricking iron to prick and mark the hole? A stitching iron is to make a hole right?
