If you read Stalin's life, a reliable reference is the book by the historian Gianni Rocca, you will discover how the Soviet system had to be defended. This is because there were both internal enemies of the revolution and external enemies, external interventions by France and Great Britain in 1918. Still a great documentary. Thanks BBC.
