I am a bachelor in Jhb and my family is in another city, and my dhal never comes out right. Mine never comes out smooth and I have a tried a few times. What is available to You? As long as you hv cumin, coriander an turmeric it ok just add chillies fr a bite , but if u cn get thn add garam masala
