I scrapped one of those front-loading washers yesterday, and it took us about 3 -4 hours to get the drum out of the plastic, It was plastic right up to the top of the bearing. What we didn't use, we used Air jackhammer, saws-all, and grinder. About 15 minutes into it, I knew it wasn't worth it, but I was determined to get it free... It'll be a VERY long time till I pick up another one of those front loaders. The bearing is still covered in plastic, but the drum is free of the plastic now. But it was a good experience. Love your video's Buddy, Have learned lots from you... Cheers
Mike Matthews Thank you, it’s called IT will not beat me syndrome. And a fine name you have as well sir, ps. Did you have a mess all over the yard like me
Ian , you sure that it is not a stainless drum, there are a couple of types of stainless steel and I’m sure one of them is magnetic. Austenitic and martensitic, can’t remember which way round it is. But I’d check... regards
+Graham Monaghan yes your quite right but if a magnet sticks to it the scrapyard won't pay you stainless prices. £1000 per ton. If you have enough you could get a little more than light iron prices
Wonder why? Just checking up on my old metallurgy knowledge! Austenitic stainless is typically 18/8 18% chrome 8% nickel Martensitic 12% chrome and used in surgical steel kitchen knives, and washing machine drums ? Can be hardened etc. Maybe they need the extra chrome to make it profitable? Maybe 12% chrome is not enough to make it profitable
Great video.wish I had watched this a week ago.just scrapped one out and realized it definitely isn't worth it with all the plastic and concrete that I've now got to try get rid of.like you just take motor off wire and leave it in tact.👍♻
Here in Sweden we cant turn them in as is for any profit. They have their own orogram were you leave them for free. So taking som cables and the motor of makes sense as long as its wort your time. And they can have the steel and plastic for free.
Best I've done with washers Ian, few years ago when scrap was up. Saw someone delivering one in my street, and loading the old one. I just asked if I could have it. YES. Not only that there were 2, so he loaded them both in my little van. Drove 1 mile to yard. They unloaded and gave me......£24. Worst, recently. Blagged the first one for ages, got it loaded, went to the yard....shut. Hmm forgot it was Sunday. Not wanting to leave it in overnight took it to the tip.....win some, lose some eh!
Remember I can't lift much. To strip them doesn't make much difference as I get so little. Seen loads of stuff around I could have but on my own so had to leave it.
Ian , how do you get the copper out of the solenoid ? I always have trouble with them. I've got a few knocking about cos they always seem to much work to do ??
Hiya from st helens when frag was a good price i used to strip out motor cable and pump then put the back back on and weight in the carcass as well. normally a 10p in the pump. lol
Hi ian. Im getting to like you a little more every time I watch a vid, but as im a brummie ( from Birmingham) lol , its taken a while to get used to your accent, but its all good now and love your vids. I have a question for you which is , is it worth melting down scrap copper and making them into bars to then sell to the scrap yards ? Would appreciate some help and advice. Thanks mate.
Martin Terry now that is a good question, there is usually only couple hundred a ton difference between heavy copper and the other copper classes. Bright wire & burnt being the next 2 highest, it don’t seem worth it, unless your turning braziery or Cylinders. Into heavy copper
@@Man-in-da-shed thank you for replying to me and i appreciate your honesty with my question. I have bags and boxez full of household wires/cables and just wanted an opinion regarding the meltdown, so its just a case of stripping off the insulation and weighing in as it is. Thanks again mate and keep up the good work with the vids.
Martin Terry my yard now wants me to sort my wire into low grade, household, plugs cut off, power bricks separate , best thing is to talk to your local yard ask them how they would like it separated
@@Man-in-da-shed yeah thats a good idea. Im new to all this scrapping and its supposed to be just a part time hobby but it can so easily escalate and take over , as you no doubt have experienced that. Cheers mate.
I use them washer drums for a live wells when I go fishing.....keeps the fish alive so I can return them without hurting the fish if I decide not to eat them
I broke open the rear of the plastic housing to see if I could get the bearings out and there was a cast iron bearing housing encapsulated in the plastic
if you get enough money buy a external mic hard to hear you on some of your videos tgreat videos so far watching from across the pound Chattanooga Tennessee
Have you watched “Canadian Treasure Hunter” from Surrey, BC Canada 🇨🇦? He’s a full time scrapper and takes lots of things apart. 👍 Enjoying your videos too. New subscriber from Northwest Territories, Canada 🇨🇦
There are some inventors who are trying to put ballast bags inside them to fill with water. I'm not convinced... 'N I'm a plumber! Would make moving the buggers a bit easier tho...
loafer sheffield yes and add water being water water would find a way to make it leak so I can see those things becoming off-balance and the bearing going out I have a novel idea how about a top loading washing machine oh my God it uses little more water so what
Anything that makes an install easier (lighter) is A OK for me. If the machine fails, as long as it's installed right of course, then I am a happy man. BTW... gutted a house today. Customer wants plastic on all pipework, heating cold and hot water (apart from gas... gotta be copper) got 70 Kgs of copper tube... so I'm a happy man.
+SCRAP Kingdom!!!! I don't know what a Duplex is. But my house is adjoined to another, we do have very good water in the UK but dependant on area can have a high calcium content. Which creates scale when heated up, reducing efficiency and blocks ya filters up. A right pain in the ass it is
ian matthews oh so you’ll probably get your water from the city well or something That’s where our water comes from it comes from a community well Well water or groundwater is what some people call it is garbage water Does exactly what you say it’s a right pain in the ass. You see how many water tanks go kaput and that’s pretty much why The best water is the water from the Great Lakes such is Lake Michigan water take connected to water from that source will last anywhere from 15 to 40 year But definitely not out where I live count yourself lucky if you get five or six years out of it 😂
Great vids Ian to bad you dont speak american or canadian, dont understand kilo, you get paid in pounds and stones, we get paid in dollars and pounds is the weight LOL what is a quid
LOL 11:11 i realy HAHAHA
i knew it at the begining of the video that it wil end up like that loll
Was a pleasure to see you out of the shed...but still ready to Tek it bits! Good explanation and vid mate! 👍

The drum makes for an awesome fire pit project mate.
Gotta say though, your live show was damn funny. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The Backyard Welder yes. I watched a bit of it myself last nite Lol
I never thought of that, Going to try and use ours for a fire pit... Great idea Buddy...
It was fun seeing a washer being take apart and i learned a few things. Thank you fow the video sir.
Good morning Ian nice video my friend

I'm so proud of you proper instructions for breakdown Dilly Dilly

There is talk here of classing WM as environmental waste which will need special disposal like fridges & freezers
@@Man-in-da-shed i See that woule suck. I can understand the theory behind a fridge, but WM and such co me on!

Ya water is probably better than ours though
Where do you get your water from?
Any video how to make fire pit from old drum
No. But 3 pieces of angle iron welded round the outside would do for the legs
