Inyourlap yeah but they had the men's pbar uneven in a high bar orientation and did way different routines than now (there was actually a girl who scored a full 10 execution on that on the Olympics I think)
Thank you for explaining the scoring system in a way that people outside of the world of gymnastics could understand. Even as a coach, I have a difficult time explaining the system to my athletes parents. I will definitely be sharing this with them!
Best explanation I've ever heard. I've watched gymnastics all my life but never paid much attention to all these details. I understand it the sport mmuch better now. Thanks, great vid!
Thank you so much for posting this! I've always enjoyed watching gymnastics, but usually in the "it's the most fun to watch during the summer Olympics" sort of way. I've been sick and stuck in bed for a week, and I went on a bit of a youtube binge. I've watched dozens of gymnastics videos now and was starting to pick up some of the lingo, but I still had no idea how scores and points work. Your explanation was incredibly helpful and I feel like my knowledge of the sport - and thus my enjoyment while watching - just shot forward. (And I only had to rewind once to puzzle out what you meant. :P) Thanks a bunch for posting!
Damn i wish i watched this before rio! I just figured a high 14 or a 15 was good. I always wondered how the difficulty was worked out. Well at least i know for future televised competitions! Great explanations, Nile!
Fantastic video! I happen to be completely clueless when it comes to gymnastics, and I can tell you that even your simple walkthrough of the rules and scoring system was hard to follow entirely. But it sure made it a lot easier to comprehend the sport, and I'll enjoy the information when I get to watch an event following this experience. Cheers!
So Nile I don't think you're reading this but I just want to say this. I start watching your videos last week and I watched nearly every video since then. I did gymnastics when I was younger but quitted it. Im now 18 and want to start again cause you motivated me so hard and Im so thankful for your motivational funny and great videos! You're awesome and I wish you the best for the future. Cheers Nile
Fantastic! As a mummy who's little people are beginning their gymnastics journeys, eldest daughter just 5 currently training 4hrs per week and youngest 23m enjoying an hour a week at waddler to Toddler, this had been exceptionally helpful! Congratulations on your European title. Good luck for Rio. x
really nice and easy to understand, i really appreciate it. a series of these videos would be amazing if you felt up for it :) your enthusiasm makes for great watching and i learnt a stupid amount in such a compact vid, so cheers!
You're amazing. All these years watching and not understanding but you make it so clear. Could you do a video on how routines are created based on this system? or how routines are created in general?
That helped a lot, i finally understood the most important things :D Although I do gymnastics too (but only a little for fun, 6h of training a week xD) it was really helpful, because the system's pretty different from what i know... Thanks a lot!!
Geat video ! Watching that video before hand was useful information when I was watching my brother compete yesterday at the British championships in Glasgow :-)
As a gymnast that competed against the eastern half of my country I just learned the scoring I thought the added ten to the start value then took off deduction
+Tom Klein It's a H value. The first element that is higher than a G. The Cassina is a G, the Kolman (performed by Nile in this video is a F), and the Kovac is a D.
Again great idea but i would say use more visual aids to help explain and why not make this a series of small easy to understand videos but this info is definitely needed on your channel thanks mate
Awesome video explaining to people how the sport works but I just want to correct you - you can't get 0.5 deductions on steps no matter how large they are (only 0.1 and 0.3)... hopefully no judges are taking 0.5 deductions on your steps cause they're not allowed lol. Also huge congratulations on your European Title and the Olympic medal!
Nope you have to compete it on the world stage at a major championships - at world championships or Olympics - in order have it put into the code of points!
So just to make sure I get it right - If you have come up with a legit new move, and then use it in a major competition, a set of judges (and whoever else takes care of it) will evaluate it and allocate an appropriate amount of points to it? Thanks for responding, Nile. I discovered you two days ago and have been watching tons of your videos while doing my own stretching and training since then :)
With the new code being out some things changed in terms of deductions and element groups, right? Maybe it's nice to make an updated version of this video :D
Thank you for explaining this. It sounds like a fair system that allows for the training-level of the gymnast. Now, can you please explain the politics?
+Nick B Yes, I believe a gymnast has to compete his new move at World level competitions & it gets submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation. Basically They then accept it & give it a difficulty value in the code of points.
Did you make this video because people keep saying "oh why is he ranked at the bottom because that guy did a flip and the other guy " because if you did it really helps thx
I have a question, you said that skills are divided from A to G, but, aren't the full twisting double layout and the double twisting double tuck clasified in H? And isn't the Moors a I?
Nile Wilson yes, I am referring to women's gymnastics. Sorry for bothering you! Thanks for making videos, they really help me and I find your videos really entertaining, please keep on doing them!
So for all you reining horse folks out there here's an explanation in your words: Reining patterns start at an average of 70. All horses start at a 70 the moment they walk in the arena. This score of 70 is kind of comparable to the difficulty score, except in gymnastics it isn't a 70 across the board, they actually take into consideration and specialize each starting score to the contestant based on what moves are performed. Let's say we give a horse a starting score of 5.5 for a sliding stop, a rollback, and two spins. Now, for the execution score, everyone starts at a 10 when they step on the apparatus, just like the average score 70. As a reigner moves through a pattern, they are added or deducted based on execution from -1.5 to +1.5 (It sounds like gymnasts only go down). Let's say our reigner overspun by an eighth. He will be deducted -.5, so his execution score is now 9.5. He doesn't do anything else in the pattern wrong, so his execution score is still 9.5 when he exits. To get his final score, we take the starting score of 5.5, and add it to the execution score of 9.5, and get a final score of 15.
is it too late to start gymnastic? i'm 22 years old i do calisthanics since 8 months and i want to improve my skills,do u think that gymnas will help emprove'em? thnx
Lol you could totally compete in you wanted to. You would have to put in the work for probably about 3 years, but people in gymnastics compete at a high level into their 30's. So absolutely it's possible.
I can now watch gymnastics with a better insight. I understood that 15 was good but never knew difficulty and execution was decided by different judges. Also you said that on teams that there is usually a specialist because only three scores are taken and I understand you medalled in an apparatus but what other apparatus would you consider yourself proficient in?
CrossFit is my new passion and a lot of gymnastic elements are needed in CrossFit I have a long way to go you're an awesome athlete I'll keep watching your channel it's very inspiring thank you
This is funny cuz I'm pretty sure this is only guys gymnastics cuz I was in girls gymnastics last year and this is not how they score things. Girls can't score over a 10. 10 is also were u start then judges take away from the 10 for mess ups. But thanks for the info on this I've never understood how me friend scores over a ten till now. Thanks!
Did you make this video because people keep saying "oh why is he ranked at the bottom because that guy did a flip and the other guy " because if you did it really helps thx
The security and thankfulness in his voice as he said "We will never do beam."
I'm honestly quite thankful that I never had to try p-bars routines.
Gabrielle Brown women used to do p bars though
Inyourlap yeah but they had the men's pbar uneven in a high bar orientation and did way different routines than now (there was actually a girl who scored a full 10 execution on that on the Olympics I think)
this is so clear man!
I don't do gymnastics and don't have anybody I know who does it but damn that's interesting
Thank you for explaining the scoring system in a way that people outside of the world of gymnastics could understand. Even as a coach, I have a difficult time explaining the system to my athletes parents. I will definitely be sharing this with them!
6:10 "the phone's ringing" i was dying of laughter😂
Nice video man! Also getting way better at using your voice. Great stuff!
+Bram Verhofstad Thanks Bro
Gymnastics is one of the few Summer Olympic Sports I make a point to watch. Beautiful. Awe inspiring! Mind blowing.
Best explanation I've ever heard. I've watched gymnastics all my life but never paid much attention to all these details. I understand it the sport mmuch better now. Thanks, great vid!
I've just started Gymnastics at Uni, This really informed me how men's gym is scored! Thanks
This is the scoring system in a nutshell= Difficulty + Execution = Score.
Thank you so much for posting this! I've always enjoyed watching gymnastics, but usually in the "it's the most fun to watch during the summer Olympics" sort of way.

Thanks so much for the support! You should definitely get started in the gym again! Best wishes
WOW.. Yes i will absolutely do this. Thank you so much !
This was so interesting, I didn't realise gymnastics was scored so confusingly😂
Fantastic! As a mummy who's little people are beginning their gymnastics journeys, eldest daughter just 5 currently training 4hrs per week and youngest 23m enjoying an hour a week at waddler to Toddler, this had been exceptionally helpful!
Congratulations on your European title. Good luck for Rio. x
Finally I understand the scoring. Thanks Nile.
really nice and easy to understand, i really appreciate it. a series of these videos would be amazing if you felt up for it :) your enthusiasm makes for great watching and i learnt a stupid amount in such a compact vid, so cheers!
As someone who loves watching gymnastics but isn't a gymnast, this made it a lot more clear on what is going on with scoring. Thanks! :)
Class Nile, admire what you're doing as someone looking up to you brother! 👊🏼🇬🇧
+Hamish Carter Cheers Brother! You were looking good this week 💪
+Nile Wilson love Nidge, #newmindset ... 💪🏼 X
Your explanation of football is everything. Love it.
You're amazing. All these years watching and not understanding but you make it so clear. Could you do a video on how routines are created based on this system? or how routines are created in general?
Wow thank you! Yes will endeavour to 🤸🏼♂️🤸🏼♂️
great informative video Nile! Best wishes to you this gymnastics season + prepare for Rio Olympics!
This was a great video, never fully understood how the difficultly score was worked out ☺️👍🏻
I've actually got my AOP next week for GCSE gymnastics. This is very helpful. :)
That helped a lot, i finally understood the most important things :D Although I do gymnastics too (but only a little for fun, 6h of training a week xD) it was really helpful, because the system's pretty different from what i know... Thanks a lot!!
You should really bring it out to the surface Nile!! It will be count more now for sure!!✌🏼💪🏼
This is a super practical and informative video.
That made so much more sense!!! Thank you!!
Just saw this video. Fantastic explanation.
this was really good! im qualified as a judge and you forget how complicated it is to someone that doesn't know the details if you get me haha
This is really very good and very helpful. Thanks.
Men will NEVER do beam!!! Brilliant lol
Made sense to me. Thanks for the awesome explaination Nile
You have made my get in my gym on the rings and train train train and then stretch my body to pieces .
Geat video ! Watching that video before hand was useful information when I was watching my brother compete yesterday at the British championships in Glasgow :-)
Thanks so much I am making an app for gymnastics and your explanation on the scoring system helped me a lot!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!! FINALLY I UNDERSTAND CLEARLY THE EXACT WAY THEY GET SCORES!!!!!!!
Love the idea ... I'm a gymnast and I still didn't know all this !!
This is INCREDIBLY helpful!
This is actually very helpful. Thanks, mate!
Great explanation. Very clear!
very very simple nile!! 😂 cheers man💪
+Adam Hussain Aha I tried🙈
If u see this, I wish u good luck a im so happy I saw you at the American cup!
sick video nile im a gymnast but still watched it just cuz
Omg this video is amazingggg 👌👌❤️
that was a fun video :D good stuff keep it up man !
As a gymnast that competed against the eastern half of my country I just learned the scoring I thought the added ten to the start value then took off deduction
Nice video, buddy! Hope Rio training is going well! 💪🏼
actually so happy that I get this now
Immediately goes back to watch your Olympic performance now that I have an idea what's going on 😂
What difficulty is the Bretschneider ? Classy video by the way. When is your next training video is coming up ?
Keep going
+Tom Klein It's a H value. The first element that is higher than a G. The Cassina is a G, the Kolman (performed by Nile in this video is a F), and the Kovac is a D.
I've already liked it bro
Again great idea but i would say use more visual aids to help explain and why not make this a series of small easy to understand videos but this info is definitely needed on your channel thanks mate
Love this video ❤️
Thank you, this helps so much!
I had to show this to my mum and to my dad because they would yell at me when I would get a high score and they wouldn't understand😂
That was a great explanation 💪🏽
Cool video, and your accent is awesome. Is it Durham or thereabouts?
2:58 I've seen those code op points so many times
Omg you answered my question! Thank you😂💖
Awesome video explaining to people how the sport works but I just want to correct you - you can't get 0.5 deductions on steps no matter how large they are (only 0.1 and 0.3)... hopefully no judges are taking 0.5 deductions on your steps cause they're not allowed lol.
Also huge congratulations on your European Title and the Olympic medal!
What if you invent a new move? Does new skills get added to the "skill point book" at any time?
Nope you have to compete it on the world stage at a major championships - at world championships or Olympics - in order have it put into the code of points!
So just to make sure I get it right - If you have come up with a legit new move, and then use it in a major competition, a set of judges (and whoever else takes care of it) will evaluate it and allocate an appropriate amount of points to it? Thats right!!
Will u compete in 2020
Hey your my hero
With the new code being out some things changed in terms of deductions and element groups, right? Maybe it's nice to make an updated version of this video :D
Yes will definitely look into it!
Nile Wilson Love all your content though 👌😁 Looking forward to it haha
I learned ❤️💪👏
well done for 100k
I LIKE YOURE PAGE FRIEND ACTALLY YOU ARE GREAT MAN
good video! Keep it up :)
Thank you for explaining this. It sounds like a fair system that allows for the training-level of the gymnast. Now, can you please explain the politics?
When he said “we’ll never have to do beam.” I was like “thank flip I won’t have to do pommel horse like that looks painful “
Thoughts on the proposed changes to the next edition of the CoP (only four categories per event, etc.)?
great video!
So what happens when someone comes up with a new move, does it get added to the book?
+Nick B Yes, I believe a gymnast has to compete his new move at World level competitions & it gets submitted to the International Gymnastics Federation. Basically They then accept it & give it a difficulty value in the code of points.
+Nile Wilson Any FIG sanctioned comp, for example the Australian national champs in 2013 was FIG sanctioned as it was a trial for the youth Olympics.
Did you make this video because people keep saying "oh why is he ranked at the bottom because that guy did a flip and the other guy " because if you did it really helps thx
What about trampoline
Since the code has changed can you do an update of this video?
What's the difference between younger gymnast don't they get a result out of 10?
there a some differences through junior ranks however the fundamentals are the same, they have set routines as well at an early age.
thx!! do u have any tips on getting over a muscle ache/ stiff muscle?
I have a question, you said that skills are divided from A to G, but, aren't the full twisting double layout and the double twisting double tuck clasified in H? And isn't the Moors a I?
I might be wrong but think you're referring to women's gymnastics code.. The men's is very different!
Nile Wilson yes, I am referring to women's gymnastics. Sorry for bothering you! Thanks for making videos, they really help me and I find your videos really entertaining, please keep on doing them!
At one point in the video it all kind of just clicked in my head and I just went ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I have a competition this weekend
Best of luck!!
Nile Wilson thx Nile ❤️❤️❤️❤️
is it too late to start gymnastic?
i'm 22 years old i do calisthanics since 8 months and i want to improve my skills,do u think that gymnas will help emprove'em? thnx
Calisthenics is great but I think gymnastics takes way more time but to for it
Most gymnasts start at about 4-6 years old... 22 is too late to compete for sure but i mean you could do it for fun and learn some skills
Tim Bols yeah If you wan to compete then it's too late but you can always do if for fun
Lol you could totally compete in you wanted to. You would have to put in the work for probably about 3 years, but people in gymnastics compete at a high level into their 30's. So absolutely it's possible.

I'm an all rounder so am aiming to win medals overall on all 6!
I’ve never understood the whole scoring thing, I don’t know if this has made it easier or harder to understand😂
was not simple but I like your channel .qustion you ever do CrossFit
I don't personally but think it is unreal!
CrossFit is my new passion and a lot of gymnastic elements are needed in CrossFit I have a long way to go you're an awesome athlete I'll keep watching your channel it's very inspiring thank you
