Savages on How There's No Bullshit on Stage and Why They Love Touring

- With the release of their dark, confrontationally moody, and critically acclaimed debut album, Silence Yourself (2013), Savages proved right away that their sound was frenetic and indestructible. Since then, the London-based post-punk band-formed in 2011 by Jehnny Beth, Gemma Thompson, Ayse Hassan, and Fay Milton-has maintained an uncompromising passion and presence that few others can.
This January, with a shift in tone and the intention to “write the loudest songs ever,” the band moved forward with the release of their sophomore album, Adore Life. This time-as the title suggests-they thematically embraced an affection for life and its romantic messes: sexual discovery, desire, and the dubiously transformative power of love.
In this episode of Broadly Meets, host and lead singer of White Lung, Mish Way, talks to Jehnny Beth and Gemma Thompson of Savages about their new album, touring, and how there's no bullshit on stage.

I laughed out fucking loud at "what does it feel like to be a woman eating a sandwich?"
kinda in love with Gemma based on this 8 minute video.
Urgent question!!!: What brand are either of those incredibly cool sunglasses they're wearing?
I wonder how it is possible that this band has not reached me before, that is, when they were born, or at least when they published this album and instead today, June 19, 2020, through the solo album of their charismatic leader, Jehnny Beth, I come across the entirety of their work. Of course better late .. if it is so worth it.
Saw them tonight in Cincinnati, the show was fucking brilliant.
While I was grateful for this, I'd really be interested to hear what Ayse and Fay have to say on the subject. They don't get interviewed nearly as often as they should.
+D Snodgrass I agree. The music press industry has a long tradition of ignoring bassists and drummers in their band coverage. Although it is possible Ayse and Fay simply weren't available for an interview, weren't interested in doing one, or perhaps they each agreed a segment with 4 people might have seemed too crowded or distracting to focus on their overall message. If you're looking to hear more from the band members, Savages had a good "What's in My Bag?" video too, where they all got to have their say.
I saw them at last years Latitude and deemed it one of the most kick ass performances I've ever seen.
They're very minimalistic in the emotions area.
I haven't heard of them before but I'm definitely interested now. Also, they mentioned HTRK who are sooo intensely good.
Love this band. I miss them.
Thank you for showing me this band!!
They're cool, they don't get distracted by the bullshit
Actually, the interviewer should have asked the most IMPORTANT QUESTIONS!
How comes, that they singed a great contract within 2 years after founding the band and went right into mainstream, completely skipping underground phase? They released well funded album within 2 years, supported with well paid, designed and edited music videos after 3 years? What kind of conenections have they had?
I think I may know the answers. Their very good friend and their manager is John Best, who is also the manager of Wembley level band Sigur Ros (cool musical project too btw).
That would explain why they so rapidly got so far and where they get their promotion from.
Savages are very good but not as good to have such money and opportunities, out of the blue. Their sound is entertaining and decent, however seems to be, also very saturated with generic 80's Post-Punk rip-off sounds.
There are dozens great Post-Punk revival and Alternative Rock bands around London, which have played much longer than them.
These bands are as good or even better, including many all-female bands. Some have been playing for longer than a decade.
All of them are still staying in the undergorund and have not got, even anywhere near to having such opportunities.

Haha, what do you think success in the music industry is based on? Talent?
Have the right look, know the right people, creativity and skills are fairly low on the list. Its sad, but its true.

I think you need some minimum requirement for talent when it comes to mainstream rock music. Not necessarily when it comes to pop music - examples like Lady GaGa (her songs sound like poor imitation of 90s Eurodance, particularly Ace of Base), or Gangnam Style dude.
Although, I agree with you that it seems that knowing right people or simply being in right place at right time is the way to get to mainstream. Sadly :-|
It also seems that the intensity of success is directly reflected by how far you go with conforming and selling yourself to music industry, consumerism, media and show business...
Indeed, still, better to laugh than cry :P.
If it helps, nothing seems to kill that really interesting type of creativity like money and fame
+FranticBedlamite It seems that bands like this (and I REALLY like this one) are more about evocation than innovation, and that's what gives them their resonance; at first with influential music-business figures (who may recall the original style well, and welcome its revival) , and then with the buying public. It worked for Oasis that way as well. To amalgamate several different cultural " markers" from a time in living memory seems to be a successful strategy, if you can get the packaging right. To ask the question you wish would not yield the right answer, because the band isn't really the one who drives the strategy; or if they do, they can't really admit it. Evidence of calculation tends to put people off, because no one likes to be reminded of the wires and mirrors behind the scenery; even if everyone "knows" they are there.
Nothing wrong in reviving musical genres. The point was not about that.
It was about connection and being chosen over others (often more ingenious artists), just because you know someone powerful in the business.
Jehnny Beth’s original music was very “safe” in Jehnny + Johnny. She’s come a long way.
everything has different connotations when you're a woman, so yes, eating a sandwich as a woman and climbing the stairs as a woman is different-especially if there's someone behind you.

And?
They on some Trinity / Switch shit!
love
great interview...
Mish Way should guest star on iZombie.
I thought this band was actually called Placebo? Why did they change their name?
Amine Cabourg
placebo is completely unrelated band to savages, although their aesthetics are similar
the interviewer seems disinterested and like she is rushing them.
what happened to this band?
NOISE GUITAR...JIMI HENDRIX, PETER "T",ANDY GILL, BLIXA BARGELD,JIMMY PAGE, E."Slowhand"C. & JEFF BECK ALL WOULD BE PROUD TO WELCOME GEMMA "T" TO ANY JAM SESSION IN THE HEAVENS! .........JUST AS KEITH MOON & JOHN ALEC ENTWISTLE WOULD ROCK FAY WITH AYSE ANYDAY!!! LONG LIVE ROCK! Pete Townshend Once Said "YOU CAN'T IGNORE POWER & VOLUME!"
I want her to explain how the fuck she's confused Nina Simones voice for a man's voice. Like.... Wtf?? 😡
good damn question...
+Missy Teree If you don't know who is singing, the first time you hear her voice, you can ask this question to yourself. But you need to forgot this is her. Her deeply voice can be affiliated with Cee Lo Green' s voice for example
empireofthesunlight Exactly, like the first time I heard Only For You by Heartless Bastards. It was so beautiful I didn't care.
Wait. Am I watching the matrix?
You want to see blood on the stage? Pop down the Underworld.
Are they synths. Look how robotic and unhuman they look!
"bands that don't play aggressively don't mean it cuz reasons"
wah
you're inside! Take the damn sunglasses off!
Interviews with bands are so pointless.. I’m not really interested in their views on the world or the dissection of their work. They sound good on stage and look good.. that’ll do for me. Ta.
Yeah i love em too but I just want to hear more music from them and not so much their views.
Men effect women, women effect men, do we need to keep score
this sucked
THIS.... is fucking music???????? wow......
