  • Hair mistakes that age you faster but with a twist! In this weeks video I get to talk about some very COMMON mistakes that require MINOR adjustments to create massive changes! This video is episode 20 in a series where I'm randomly selecting one of the subscribers that entered and using them as a model. I use photos they send in to explain potential mistakes that are being made with their hair now and showing examples of styles they could wear that could help them create an even more youthful edge. In this episode we talk about how important volume is in SPECIFIC places to create a more youthful look, if cutting your hair a little shorter is more youthful or if it should be longer! We talk about rectangular face shapes and the best hair length for them as well as what bangs are best. What length should a bob haircut be and should you wear bangs with them? We also hit on how to make hair look thicker and what hair color is best. Many times if you want to look more youthful, it just takes small changes to create a large impact! These hair hacks are small changes that are EASY to make!

You know what also makes women "anxious," it's constantly being bombarded with ads and articles telling them what clothes, haircuts, hair color, etc., make them look older, as well as how to make their skin look younger, etc., ad nauseam, but not ever seeing such a focus of concern regarding a man's appearance. Men don't get the same flack for ageing nor the same scrutiny regarding what should be a natural and accepted process.

About 10 years ago I stopped dying my hair - I was never happy with it anyway especially since my grey roots would show after less than a week. I have kept it in a pixie cut ever since, au naturel grey/silver, no muss no fuss and it is so freeing! I also use only mild soap and water on my face, moisturise only if my skin feels dry, and apart from an occasional swipe of lipstick (parties, weddings etc), no make-up. I don't waste time, money or energy worrying about my looks, I'm far more concerned with my health, and just living my life. The funny thing is though that after I let the grey show people started to compliment me saying I looked younger. One possible explanation may be that I felt more confident and at ease with growing older. Making women feel bad about not looking ''youthful'' in their 40's, 50's, 60's and beyond is just toxic.

I think highlights always make us look younger. Not big streaks but subtle highlights. I'm 70 now. I have been lazy since covid and let mine grow and nightlights have grown out too. I did go to your salon in Portland years ago. My sisters and I treated ourselves to nice salon. We traveled about 120 miles round trip. Now for the bad news, the girl at the salon didnt listen to me at all about what my hair was like. I had very thick naturally wavy to curly hair. I gave her free reign on what she wanted to do. She gave me a stacked bobb. I looked like a mushroom when I left the salon. I went back a couple of weeks later for color. I had a different girl because the girl who cut my hair called out sick. The girl who took her place, asked me if I liked the cut, I said not really it was too hard to style, she said " do you want me to fix it for you "? I said yes, she shaped it up and that helped. I was very disappointed with my experience at Hicox. After all, I expected the best for what we paid.

I have the same face shape problems as Bonnie, so I wasn’t too happy (my husband always tells me I look beautiful however my hair is). I pushed my hair back behind my ears and brushed it back more to give a little more volume all over. I also added interesting earrings. It all really changed the way I look and feel. Next time I will definitely not have my hair cut so short. Your video confirmed what I did. Thank you Justin, for boosting my confidence even further!

The cut should go back in place when you go home. That when you know you have the right person. A former hair dresser and skin and make up over 30 plus years now 75. I became a RN T age 40 to almost age 70. I still occasionally do haircuts and style plus slight make up on older women that brings out their face. Not the make up. Just because you are older does not mean you are terrible if you make yourself more attractive like some people think. You should also go with there style of life. Bangs swept to the side was actually Far More aging because it immediately drew attention to the deep lines between her eyebrows (the dreaded "11's" most of us older ladies - myself included - struggle with). This was a Very Helpful demo for Me personally, because I make several of these "mistakes" myself. I too sweep my bangs to the side, which emphasizes My deep lines between My eyes. It's obvious to me now that I need to change my bang style. The ideas for enhanced Volume (in specific places) and the Brilliant idea of darkening the base color before adding highlights - these are all things I can use personally to (hopefully) improve my hair style. Thank you so much! I'm subscribing to your channel thanks to the immense usefulness of this one video.
PS: Please don't take offense, but I immediately guessed your wife's age at 15 to 20 years younger than you. (That size of an age difference is not especially unusual between a young wife versus her significantly older husband.) Also, I suspect the pictures you showed of your wife may have been taken when she was younger than you currently are? But I assumed they were current pics of your wife, and judged your age difference accordingly. Once an incorrect 1st impression is made (my initial impression placed you in your 50's) it's difficult to shake that impression... even though intellectually I quickly realized I had almost certainly greatly misjudged. (You may wish to show pics of yourself & your wife together in order to better illustrate that you are closer in age.)
However, if you would like to "turn back the clock" on your own looks, may I suggest you may wish to take your own excellent advice? Perhaps you should try darkening your own hair? In bright sunlight you look gray haired to me, which seems unnecessarily aging? (I'm guessing IRL your hair is actually a lovely platinum blonde?)
However, to enhance your work on camera, in lieu of using heavy makeup to add color to your face, perhaps you too would benefit from darkening your hair, both to perhaps enhance your skin tone (?) & to make you "read" upon immediate first impression, as being Younger than you currently appear to be?
It was the appearance (at least in bright sunlight) of having gray hair, which made Me automatically judge you as being older than you probably are; perhaps other people get the same (unflattering & incorrect) first impression?
Anyway, that's just a friendly, well meant suggestion from a very impressed new subscriber. Thanks for all your excellent advice! I'm looking forward to binge watching your other videos.

I love your suggestions for Bonnie. I went and got my Husband - who ALWAYS wants my hair LONG even when I am desperate to get it cut. When I get it cut, he likes it! I wish we could just 'cut to the chase' if you get me. So I am glad, delighted with your comments. I want my Husband to love my hair, but ultimately feeling truly free to make choices and feeling supported in those choices is best!!! Its easy for woman to put others opinions first, we need to remember its just an opinion. Shouldn't generalise, but that is my experience. Thanks for the vids xx

My husband wants my hair long too. I’m 60 with thin fine hair. Long hair just doesn’t work for me. I can actually pull it up in a ponytail except some stragglers on my neck…this is great for around the house and walking the dogs, but is definitely not a good look for me.

I just welled up with tears from that amazing message to husbands and partners, I agree with you wholeheartedly. And definitely I’d shorten the back of the bob. Personally I think very ‘neat’ bobs look a bit ‘clip-on’ like a Lego person.. mussed/messed up is a big youthful. I’d not have neat turn under but texturise the ends a little bit.

My sister and I went on a trip to join our spouses in Las Vegas. Our husbands were on their annual cross-country Motocycle pilgrimage to the Sturgis Rally. We had a 4-day rendezvous in Vegas. The men left a few days ahead, and we flew. My hair was thick and long, to about 8-10 inches below my shoulder. The day before my flight, I got a rather drastic haircut, a Jaw length, inverted U stacked, above the occipital bone, and closely clipped, fringe around my, neck,
We get to Vegas and our menfolk arrived, soon after. My brother-in-law got to the room first and flattered me when I opened the door for him. "NICE new Do..." he tells me..." SSSsssshhhh!!!!!" was my reply. "I want to wait and see how long it takes for Mike to notice". Bobby's reply, "That's messed up, man!"... I assured him not to worry; Mike wasn't going to get in trouble, or anything. It was just for laughs and giggles. Mike's an enigma. He is arguably
the MOST intelligent person, I've ever met, but he also has my vote for the most clueless and unobservant.
When Mike made it up to the room. Bobby cleared his throat and made an announcement: "WHELP! I've got a wild HAIR! I'm going down to the casino and grab myself some HAIR of the dog. Otherwise, them rides can get pretty HAIR raising!!" The hint was lost on Mike. We went on and had a lovely time at the theme parks, and on tours through other casinos. I actually forgot all about the ruse. On the THIRD day of dining, dancing, and going on rides, him finding me in CROWDS, we went to go watch a magic show. While waiting for the show, Mike ordered us some drinks, and we sat at the bar, aimlessly playing the table-top poker. All of a sudden, Mike spit his beer across the table, turned to me all shocked and dumbfounded. "HOLY SHIT!!! WHEN did you cut your HAIR?!?!?" I was laughing so hard, I could barely tell him, while Bobby only said, "Thats just messed up man!".
About 2 years later, I discovered a particularly nasty fast-growing tumor, in my right breast. I had absolutely no trepidation of losing all my hair to chemo. I knew, beyond any doubt, that Mike only saw ME, the WHOLE of me, ALL of ME. Anything else was just surface stuff, immaterial, and of no real consequence. That's why it always puzzles me when women take umbrage at their partners who haven't noticed every little change she's made in her appearance. It's gotta be exhausting to need to stay on your toes, so you don't miss any minor detail that might piss them off.

I agree 100 percent. Hair stylist aren't hard to find, a good 1is near impossible to find. Years of bad experiences from my hair melted on my head before it all fell out to going in for a 2" trim off my waist length hair to walking out with shoulder length hair because the person couldn't cut naturally curly hair straight without gapping it. Her trying to 'Fix it' resulted in my long hair laying on the floor. Insult to injury was her saying I looked gorgeous with short hair. An X BF that was a ' color pro' left the foils in too long, my hair came out with the foils. That was 5 years ago. Noone has touched my hair since. I color and cut my own hair. Perfect? No. Better than the alternative? Most definitely.

He compliments me when I get home from the salon and has always liked the various colors I've tried. During Covid my hair started growing out, I decided to keep going since my hair is healthy and fairly thick .One hair trim ago I thought about cutting again but decided to give it some more thought. Today I asked my husband what he thought and then I pushed him for a definitive answer. He likes it long! I don't know what I'll decide but the video made me chuckle.

I thought some layering would give it more of a free and youthful look. I think blunt cut bobs, no matter who wears them (especially with bangs) drags the face down and tends to lay flat. Here’s the thing, my husband prefers longer hair however when I met him I had a pixie cut (I was also 40 pounds lighter 😂) he is going to love me no matter what my hair looks like but because he prefers longer hair I keep it that way plus I prefer him with a beard and because of that he has one. It’s about making each other happy but it’s also about being happy in your own skin.
    Now on to Bonnie:
Bonnie is a beautiful woman but I feel her hair is making the top of her head look more pointy. As soon as I saw her I thought she would look great with a shorter hair cut (something sassy) with more fullness on the top with layers, longer side swept bangs. I also see her with a definite lighter hair color, more blonde for sure!

Pulling the bangs back makes her look older. But thinning the bangs, or feathering them with layering might look better.

I wasn't crazy abt the side bangs on her either but loved everything else

Some great suggestions. I would definitely go for more of a bob cut and side bangs looked so much better

Truth , sending love. Hair with layers. I'm a pixie girl, been trying to let grow into shag. Really like pixie though. Easy to style. I'm 63.☺ Gray hair, no make up. Love it.

For a lot of us that had hair down to our butt in our youth -- it's hard to find a cut that we're happy with. We get stuck in that time period, for whatever reason. I'd love to have long hair again, but the lines in my face would just get longer. So, I go shoulder-length. I like the idea of volume in the crown and around the eyes. Why don't our hairdressers understand that! I always end up coming home and having to chop into the top to add volume. In this lady - you took away the "pin head" look and enhanced her eyes, which are beautiful. She looks so much more attractive. The highlights look great too. Another beautiful transformation. Wonder if she'll take you up on your suggestions.

    Ok, here we go:
before I even look at the pictures, I already know, that something about her cut is 'dragging the eye down' and that she need highlights or lowlights to give more dimension to her hair.
    How am I doing?
And yes, I've been binge watching your videos for days 😉😅
All yokes aside though, I do feel that I'm finally starting to understand, what makes a hairstyle work and how to improve it with little changes 👍

Pointing out the importance of line was really helpful. I recently got a blunt bob because I really didn't know what to do with my thinning hair. It looks awful. I would like to know what your suggestions for a short cut would be. I have never had short hair.

Wow. My hair is my constant concern. Like Bonnie (I am Bonnie too, so I relate in so many ways), my hair style is making me look older, broader and boxy. I have same curtain fringe, same length, same angle back to front etc. At 69 years of age, my current haircut is making me look broader and older than I need to look. I will show your video to my hairdresser and ask for your tips to be implemented as we go forward. I am blown away by your intuitive suggestions. I have subscribed and from this day forward, I am your biggest fan!

I like your final choice. I have similar hair, thin and fine with a high forehead (like Chynna Phillips) so have always worn a bob with bangs since I was two! It's easy to say 'more volume' and photoshop it, but difficult to actually achieve with my hair. I use large velco rollers and tease the hell out of my hair with limited results. Suggestions for women like me?

Root spray on top & in back.
I have VERY thin wavy hair & had this wedge-ish 'after' cut with dark auburn & brown lowlights & blonde highlights pre-Covid & pre-ME/CFS.
      (...Time to bring it back!)
Use root spray & leave-in styling conditioner on the ends, and bend over to blow dry hair with a round 1" brush to shape it and tuck the ends under, else flat-iron after.
Dry any bangs first side-to-side, then style them at the end.
Mouse on top can work, but sometimes it works too well & it results in '70s hair'.
      See what works for you.

Or try a root lift perm. It doesn't curl, just gives lift and volume at the roots.

I have been a cosmetologist for over 35 years with my own salon, and a lot depends on the clients hair. Thinning hair, fine hair, hair texture, and so on. Face shape, length of neck and so on. Women like an easy hairdo. Wash and go, with little maintenance. No two heads are alike. No two people like the same. There is no correct answer. It is all in the eyes of the admirer, and so on.

Ha ha, your wife's great, I can defo see why you fell for her - looks, personality, everything! As for Bonny, I was thinking along the same lines as your suggestions, probably because I've seen quite a lot of your videos. I've tried to apply some of your suggestions with my own hair and it's made a difference. The only thing I wasn't sure about was when you changed the bangs, as you call them. It exposed more of her forehead and for me it made her face look longer, but that's just my opinion. What you did with the colour looked great, though! 😀
