- If you want to move to Toronto, you might be in for quite a shock! Toronto is Canada's largest city and it comes with a pretty hefty price tag. In today's video I break down my monthly expenses and give you a tour of my apartment so you can start to get an idea of how much moving to the city would cost and what you can expect to get for your money. If you get unlucky. My one bedroom apartment, which is within a 3 story apartment building in East Scarborough, also has its own separate kitchen room, and its own furnace room. For the last 15 years, it has only cost me a fixed $140.00 per month. My monthly unlimited internet cost is $19.95. My monthly phone cost is just under $7.00. I installed my own air conditioner. And, I have my own website. The catch is being disabled, and having to survive on only $9,744 per year. That is what the ODSP provides. (Ontario Disability Support Program)

I live very near downtown in Montreal, it's $650 for a 3.1/2 apartment of at least 50 m2, and it includes heating. Not sure you could rent an apartment in a nice neighborhood in Peru for less.
To finance an $180K 3.1/2 apartment in Montreal it's around maybe $1.200 monthly (loan, interests and insurance) with a 5% down payment.
Downtown the rent could be maybe double, but it's more or less the same and it's more stress and much harder to park. It's just 1-2 km from here (Plateau Mont Royal), you could even go there walking in 10 minutes.
I can always park one car very near the building, no problem at all. Even in winter, when they clean the streets and prohibit parking on the side they remove the snow.
Least expensive car insurance is around $30/month, depends on your driving record. Cellphone with 4GB data is around $50, Internet is $50 too, but could maybe get it for $30. Electricity is around $20.
I have been in Toronto or Ottawa, not sure it's any better than Montreal. It may be somewhat colder here in winter, though.
Student fees for Quebec residents are much lower than in Ontario or BC. Around $3.500 / semester, full time.
Food could be something like $100 weekly for a person.
But I'm not sure would recommend anyone moving to Canada. Life in Peru was definitely better (for me), was able to get incomparable better jobs and had more money too.
Well because I guess Peru is way cheaper. I just moved here (used to live in Mexico) but honestly in Mexico the salaries are shitty even with a professional career and you can't afford to pay rent without being limited with your expenses (of course if you're American or Canadian they will not give you those shitty salaries). In Canada you can definitely save money and there's more employment, if 1 job doesn't get you enough money you can have 2 (like me I work like crazy). I wouldn't buy a house here tho, that is expensive and since I don't plan to have kids I can just rent forever and then get a small house by the beach some years later lol.
Montreal rents have always been much lower than Toronto

Life in montreal is a way cheaper than toronto or GTA u pay $30 car insurance, we pay around $150 for one car. $380 in total 2 cars plus home insurance!! That's crazy!!
Hi Alina! When I moved to Dallas Texas area for a career, my one bedroom apartment with sunroom was $860 USD, in a suburban city nearby. It was modern and nice, and carpeted. After the one year lease, the renewal went to $980. Another 6 months and it went to $1200. Decided to look for a new home construction subdivision, figuring If I could just add a bit more money I could purchase a new home. Ultimately had a small 2400 square foot home built, and priced at 146k (in 1998). Monthly mortgage payments were 1% of the cost, over 20 years, $1,450. Just got really lucky that all of the conditions were right, I guess. The home is now valued at 300k (2020) for taxation purposes. Just paid the mortgage off in December! Owning a home has both advantages, like having something of value when done, but disadvantages of upkeep, taxes, all utilities, HOA, etc. It’s a major undertaking. One bit of advice, if I could: if you have ability to save anything to your bank and investments, DO THAT! Imagine what could happen to you without an income temporarily, like with COVID lay-offs we see now, and inability to pay rent or house payment. The biggest mistake is not to have an EMERGENCY FUND. I know this is hard on millennials, since housing and food is SO expensive in many places where the jobs are. Landlords are just too greedy, nowadays, IMHO. We are threatening this younger generation’s ability to stay above poverty. You are such a beautiful and smart individual, and I’m sure you will always find a way to stay gainfully employed, though you may have your down periods.

Thank you! Yes, I thankfully have an emergency fund and no debt, so I am beginning to invest more and consider real estate once I have an idea of where I want to have a home base. Right now I'm planning to be on the road a lot!
Alina, glad to know you have sufficient buffer! Makes perfect sense in your case to keep your situation “soluble” with respect to housing. I suppose with your current ambitions of modeling, acting, etc. that Toronto is the place to be in Canada. What is the vision that you have for your life, say in a few years? Do you have any inclination toward a family, home, and what do you feel is a higher spiritual calling in your life? I don’t know why it is that when I see your videos (and I’m still working at it, LOL) that I feel your honesty and transparency, as if you could be a beloved friend. Indeed, you are precious. There are many lonely people in this generation who can benefit from a perceived friend, advisor, encourager. Perhaps that is one of your life ministries at this point? I am not lonely personally. And even though I am probably twice your age, I feel a kindred mission. When I was in high school, the Vietnam Nam war was ending, and it was apparent that there was much healing needed in the USA. I consider myself part of about a 4 year “generation” whose mission was restorative, to bring peace and remind about the essential purpose of love. Maybe I’m imagining it, but as a spokesperson with a platform, you seem to be in a position to carry on this function in your generation. I’m still youthful at heart, and identify with struggles that younger generations may face. After seeing the love you have for your mom and dad, I am certain you have or are becoming aware of some very profound truths about this life - and the nature of what love really is.

I think that you can't compare just with your monthly expenses, you have to match that with average earnings in the country, or the minimal legal earning, if applies. In Colombia for example, you need around 500 USD to have a decent life as bachelor, but more than 80% of the population earns around 300.

I was in downtown Toronto about 15-20 years ago and a new condo building had a sign saying $150k! Wish I had bought then.

Great video and very informative. Toronto has become super expensive in the last 10 years. I've lived in the UK (London) and in Toronto. I feel that while London is expensive I had access to the best galleries, museums, sights , and could travel to Europe and Asia without breaking the bank. Toronto is also getting super expensive and the prices you quote are accurate but I feel one doesn't get that that much in return for the high prices.

When I was younger I had the chance to travel to many interesting and also nice places the same way that you do now Alina except that there was no Internet and all those marvellous things linked to it at that time. Among the places I visited in Canada was Toronto, the most Americanized and maybe also the most modern city from my point of view. I was also in Quebec City, Ottawa, Montreal, Victoria and Vancouver, as far as I know, this last one place is the most expensive city to live in Canada with medium-sized appartments costing an average of 1.5 Million Canadian Dollars and also having very expensive rents for the ones who can not afford to buy a property in this small but gorgeus place on the west coast. The expenses you mentioned in the video sound reasonable. I have lived in SoCal (still own a house), SF Bay area, New York, and central Oregon (own a house). All expenses are relative. It really depends upon what one can afford. I hope you are able to SAVE some money (for eventual retirement). Toronto is a nice place for a big city (done business there) and so are Calgary and Edmonton, but the best place by far is Vancouver!

In a frigid city like Toronto, where you spend a majority of time indoors, away from the cold. Is it really worth paying all that money for that? Sure, Toronto is great from May thru July. But the rest of the year it's FREEZING or very HUMID, while Toronto has decent restaurants/food, it doesnt justify the high prices many ppl pay to live there IMO.
I think it’s worth it as long as you have a great job you love here. The winters aren’t nearly as bad as other places in Canada.

@@AlinaMcleod Well, the weather isn't close to Saskatchewan bad. But for what you pay and get? Not worth it. Toronto is a great city for a quick visit though. Ultimately, I guess it depends on the lifestyle one chooses? People that are active outdoors, would probably benefit living in warmer city. Also, even with the great mass transit system in T.dot, the freeways/infrastructure are overwhelming capacity and are horribly jammed, unable accomodate for all the commuters in the GTA. If Toronto was cheaper? I'd tell people to give a try....

sayjai bao Toronto is a great city to live in, plenty to do and yes we get four seasons, it’s Canada. You could live in Vancouver where it’s more expensive and you’ll get more mild temperatures but a lot more rainy days. Are you a lifestyle consultant that recommends where people should live?

This is the new generation now. In my days we were all be able to buy condos right after high school as long as you worked. Most of my friends bought condos right after high school and also they continued university as their parents helped as well but things were affordable back in the days.

I was quite impressed by your stabilized $850 living area. Especially all your wall decorations. I am not a millennial as I was born a few years before 1981. I live in NYC which is a very expensive city to live in may you just rent or own a home. Expensive sin NYC may be double or triple the cost of life in Toronto. I am very comfortable in using public transit but I can drive if I was forced to but I only do it occasionally. Entertaining myself and others is a must and a dinner date for two may cost me between $70-160 dollars. A hockey game for two is the bare minimum $200. Food is essential and yes it’s much cheaper eating at home with an average eating at home costing me $140 per week. The cheapest expense is my one year gym membership at $141 for a year membership. I say you need to make at least 50k to live a bare minimum life in NYC. But at least 100k if you really want to have fun during your times that you aren’t working at your job. In the end, your bachelor pad was quite eye pleasing.

Average expenses in Sydney, Australia would be way above $2,200 per month. In 1984 a 2 bedroom apartment on Queen Street West not far from city centre was around $400 per month if I remember correctly.

I am aware of how expensive Toronto is. Our daughter moved there, after university in maritimes, in the distillery district. We help her finically and glad to do it. In Atlantic Canada you could pay a nice mortgage for that amount of money. Houses are becoming unaffordable here as well. Great video.

I moved to Toronto in 1985 from Thornbury (pop 1500), Ontario. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I lived mostly in Scarborough and East York.

I remember paying $880 for a bachelor (all inclusive) at Yonge and Lawrence five years ago. Now the same unit is $1300 🙄
An apartment I rented all inclusive for $850 at Oakwood and Vaughan in 2016 was listed for $1,250 plus hydro earlier this year.
It looks spacious rather than specious. I'm planning to move to Philly in May in order to hang out around Rittenhouse. The cost is about the same. The cost you have that would bother me the most is the $140 for phone. Maybe you could cut that somehow. Maybe Rogers has a monopoly and that's why it's so expensive. In the US we have a cartel of several companies -- Comcast, Verizon, ATT.
Great video Alina! These days it's expensive anywhere if you haven't been grandfathered into a place. In Hamilton I pay $1300 a month for rent all inclusive, including parking and a few recreational amenities. That's in a mediocre area for a small one bedroom.
I love Freshco for groceries too because they price match as well as offering good prices on protein.

In Colombia a one bedroom apartment in an exclusive zone of the city (similar to downtown) easily can cost you around 1.5 minimum monthly salaries. In our case is 1.2 - 1.4 millions, which is around 600 - 700 CAD, but for the people living and working here is like you had to pay close to 2.500 CAD. So I think Colombia is far more expensive.
Toronto sounds like a dream compared to Vancouver! I live 1 hour drive form Vancouver and my monthly expenses are around $2,500 before factoring in ANY groceries, gas, entertainment!

I live in a downtown Queen East 1 bedroom condo, 500sqf. It's a new condo built in 2017 and heat and high speed internet is included in the rent but no parking. I pay $2000/month, I think it's very reasonable as I'm very close to tons of attractions and to lake shore.
Yes $2000 for that location and amenities is probably a bit under budget of the average!

I used to think the same way. Move to city where all the actions happen. Its nice that you have high standards but then you hit reality and realize that stuff you dreamed ( 600k house) you can't have. You can still be ambition but you hit comfort zone and you settle down what you have.

Hello from Latvia! Average monthly expenses in Riga is around 1000€ (500 rent, 250 food, 100 fuel, 150 entertainment)
Rent in Singapore can range from 300 for a shared bedroom to 450 for a single room in an apartment from public housing, 750 a room for an apt in an condo that comes with facilities like pool, gym etc and 1800 for an entire 3BR apartment in public housing. A brand new 3BR in a condo costs at least 1M 🤡

In my country (Colombia) the shower is the norm, I feel completely alien and confused inside a bathtub.
Also here you can have an equivalent standard of living with about $1500 (USD)
If you don't have to pay rent, don't have any debts, and you have a minimalist lifestyle, you can pretty much live comfortably with as little as 700-800 USD

$2,260 CAD is $1700 USD. For rent this is reasonable.
I live in Miami. Apartments in NY and Cali and Atlanta are on par or equal to $1500-1800 range.
This price is extremely average. Nothing new.
Except that after tax and the high cost of other items, including the absurd price of car insurance, it is too much. Canadians are not making as much as Americans and the Canadian Dollar isn't worth nearly as much.
Have you checked the rent of a one bedroom apartment in San Francisco? They go for around $2200 to $2700 , it's only 550 square feet!

Im in Phoenix, AZ now the cost if living varies depending on life style. However it can be about the same, with one exception, a bigger apartment.
That was great and informative. Thanks for being so open. This helps me compare my living cost in Dallas. In days of pandemic we don't go n out to eat. For two people my grocery bill often gets close to thousand. I am 5 miles away from downtown Dallas and two bed apt cost 1325.
Hi Alina, thanks for sharing your experience. It seems the evolution of rents in Toronto is quite similar to what is observed in most of Northern Hemisphere major cities hyper centers. As long as your social and professional life request living downtown it makes sense I guess. Then if and when it changes maybe your overall quality of life could be improved by living in closer contact with nature and with a larger flat for the same cost despite having to commute.

Aw thanks so much lovely! I do feel really fortunate to have been able to travel so much. When I was younger my parents were amazing for helping me see the world by going on trips together, then I started modeling in Tokyo and kept going back. Basically everything inbetween has been more budget friendly destinations where I try to hit up a few countries at a time and go for longer so I have more time to explore. I actually put out a video how I make travel more budget friendly a couple weeks ago if you're interested.
A monthly TTC (transit) adult pass actually costs about $150-160.

Everyone wants to move here and foreign investors are all investing here now so its soooo expensive. Both my parents and I were born here and since I was a kid i seen my 2 bedroom apartment raise from $800 to $1200 and thats a good $400-$500 cheaper than what its going for now.

Here is the living expenses in Calgary for 2 people (20 & 25)
1. Rent: 500$
2. Utilities (water+electricity+internet+phone): 300$
3. Groceries: 400$
4. Gas: 100$
5. Car insurance: 200$
=> 1500$
Calgary is a pretty good and cheap place to live, the city may be more boring and quite than Toronto but it is a good place if u want to start a family or just want to go to work and come home like us lol 😂😂

@@imnotacatx we rent the whole 3 bedrooms townhouse for 1400 without utillities . Rent out the basement for 600 and the small bedroom upstairs for 300$ for my brother. And we get a master bedroom for ourself for 500$

Price of rent in the last year or so anywhere in the gta has increased significantly. Most smaller cities now go for at least 950 for a bachelor and up to 1600 for a nice apartment. Young people are struggling. It's not just toronto anymore sadly :/

Unless you work in the city I don’t see the appeal for living in the city. I almost moved into an apartment in Toronto a year ago but decided to stay in Mississauga because I work in Mississauga it would be way too much commuting and too many expenses including the higher rent factor if I decided to live in Toronto. Now I just commute into the city on the weekends for fun!
It's good you found what works for you. I know a few people who prefer to live outside the city for more space, especially if you have quite a few kids. If your work is in Mississauga it definitely wouldn't make much sense to commute from downtown.
Live in etobicoke lol beyond the seas condos are a nice spot on lakeshore if you can afford it

Toronto was great before It got worldwide attention with drake, and all those high class events. I used to love Toronto born and grew up for over 20+ years. Toronto used to have this nice hidden feel like a major city that felt suburban and quiet now its so much like every other major city.

So many people always say and think millennials are too soft and expect everything given to them. You obviously work very hard to keep up with the rising costs of living in such large city PLUS travel the world to see so many beautiful cities. I'm proud of you for sticking it out in that small apartment. Have you ever considered leaving T.O for someplace more affordable and maybe just commute into the city?
Thank you! No, I moved to Toronto because I love it and want to live in it. Commuting long periods of time (unless absolutely necessary) is a waste of time in my mind. Time that I could make more money to actually live in the city and enjoy myself. Unless you absolutely love Toronto or have a really good job in the city, I wouldn't recommend living in Toronto. It does make far more sense to live somewhere for a fraction of the cost as long as you are able to support yourself with whatever work is around you. But for me being in the film industry, networking with brands and UA-cam and just genuinely wanting to have the convenience of being in the city, it's where I need to be for the time being.
I live close to downtown Edmonton. High rise building, one bedroom, living room, bath room, kitchen gym in the building, we use to have small swimming pool but not anymore..etc facing river, park. all included pays $1135 Canadian dollars a month. I think this price at least 50% less than Toronto. by the way, my area where I live is the best area in the city. similar or I can say same level as lake shore or Etobicoke in Toronto. I am thinking in 2 years when I get my retirement move to Kiev. as you know can buy there 3 bedroom for nothing 60,000 dollars. but waiting for my lady friend to move also from her city. she Lives in Sevastopol , Crimean . I do not feel comfortable , safe to live in Crimean because under Russian now. War could happen again anytime. I hope not.

I can not believe the average rent has hiked to $2200 a month ,,, it’s crazy,
I had a kitchen like that once.i was able to create alot of great meals in.
See we are in the same boat as you, we live close to Toronto and we own a 2 bed 2 bath condo and chose not having to travel a lot over buying a larger house. But now we are older and just had are second kid, we are rethinking that. The cost of living have got to go down, it cost around 1million dollars to buy a house here and that’s fucking crazy. If your single good luck buying your own home these days if your in Toronto.

I don't know which is more expensive Toronto or Vancouver, rent is ridiculously high and in small spaces, I like more Vancouver apartments but for 50m2, one bedroom and excellent you have to pay 2000-2300cad.
Where I'm living now (Mexico City) is kinda cheap country, depends on which neighbourhood you live, with the 2000cad you can rent a new large condo with 2-3 bedrooms in a fancy young neighbourhood.
Stockholm is about the same
