Great question! I put a base of aquasoil, then a capping layer, and finally the gravel. The reason for slanting is that it helps to create a sense of depth in the tank.
I was on a bit of a time crunch and didn't think too much about it when I started. Either way I would have had to take it out again, because I would have had to put the aqua soil under it.
