This is a biwa documentary but the back ground music is from an ancient Chinese instrument, GuQin.

Gagaku also originated from tang dynasty music called togaku

Thanks for the video ! I notice biwa is very rare on youtube. We can find many videos and tutorial about koto, shamisen ... but Biwa , not a lot ( mainly music but no lessons). I wanted to learn it long time ago, but if you don't live Japan, it's difficult to get a chance. And the price is crazy ^^

Thank you for watching. True, the research was difficult, most sources of information focus on the Chinese pipa. You can also get a lot of information about the history of the Japanese Biwa on this website:

The pipa you showed here is the modern one (modernized in the 50's/30's). The old pipa would literally look like the biwa

琵琶 is Chinese, with influence from Persian, but still Chinese.

I've read that the very origin of this instrument is not China but most likely the Middle East. I think some Chinese have problems to admit external influence on their culture.

Yes you are right. According to scientific and archaeological findings, the Pipa (china)- Biwa(Japan) - Bipa(Korea) probably comes from Persia and there were also Indian variants. The instrument probably came through the Hexi Corridor with Buddhism to Central China (chang-an), was adopted there because it was also used in Ritual and Ceremony Buddhist music. The pipa can be seen on many murals in the Dunhuang caves in Xinjiang. In the heyday of Chinese musical culture, the Tang Dynasty, pipa variations arrived in Japan in the 8th century with the Japanese Kentoshi missions (still preserved in the Shosoin "museum" of the Todai-ji temple in Nara). Musical instruments have had an enormous influence in the long history of Asian countries, so political systems are always trying to claim their origins, but cave paintings in Dunhuang, grave goods and many archaeological finds help to find the origins.

    Where is the Korean Bipa(琵琶)??

    • @michaelsmusicinstruments9980

Thank you for watching the video. I focused on the Japanese biwa in this video, according to research, the Biwa / Bipa came from Tang China, probably from Chang'an to Japan. It is said to have been brought to Japan by Kibi no Makibi during one of the Japanese Tang Missions. But through the direct contact from Japan with Baekje and Gaya it is of course also possible that she came from Korea. You can see two Korean Biba variants in my Korea Strings video: ua-cam.com/video/GVBKhlgM-38/v-deo.html

      Hello,
I still have to do some research on the origins of the Chinese pipa, its path from Persia to India to Kucha, China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan. After that also comes a Vietnamese pipa Đàn tỳ bà video.
Vietnam has beautiful instruments, I'm looking forward to it.
