I don't know what is the most beatiful song: "Maryland my Maryland" or "My Old Kentucky Home" The only clear fact: I enjoy a lot hearing both songs in each Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby. Greetings from Venezuela.
Mention Gettysburg and all is remembered is Picketts charge on day 3. In actually some of the fiercest fighting was actually on day 2 on Culps Hill, that lasted well after dark between Union troops from Maryland and the Confederate Maryland brigade. What the Confederates did not know when they broke off fighting at 10 pm, was that they were actually only about 100 yards from the top of the hill and breaking through the union lines.
brainiac 1900 call it what you want but it was an armed rebellion against the United States, it’s government and it’s military so why would the navy sing the confederate verses of the song?
Shane Gregory well they’re not changing the lyrics, just singing the parts of it that don’t talk about the armed rebellion. Like I said, this is the military they won’t sing about confederates, who tried to tear the nation apart
These lyrics were ok but the song was about Maryland succeding from the Union during the Civil War. Nonetheless, it shouldnt have been removed its a beautiful g
@@johnspinelli9396 Maryland didn’t secede during the civil war. this song has nothing to do with maryland and it’s set to a christmas song. u can do better
@@thegreypenguin5097 Maryland tried to secede. It took a number of (at least historically) extrajudicial measures to keep Maryland in the Union. Maryland was a slave state and Maryland citizens fought under the Confederacy, including in the famous Stonewall Brigade. The opening line of the song - “the despot’s heel is on thy shore” refers to Abraham Lincoln and the line “avenge the patriotic gore/that flecked the streets of Baltimore” refers to uprisings against Union soldiers in Baltimore. Maryland has its flaws. It’s okay to recognize them and acknowledge them, but it doesn’t need to diminish your love for the state.
Nope. It was stupid that it became the anthem in the first place. Maryland was a Union, not a Confederate state. No more tributes to traitors and slavery defenders.

Love it. Great song
Grandfather ,native to Maryland and fan of the ponies, always wiped a tear from his eye watching this.
Yeah they need to bring this song back to preakness
this isnt Maryland my Maryland. they cut out 95% of the song. all the parts of the song that had confederate influence
Perhaps the Naval Academy doesn't support armed insurrection against the US government. They sang the third verse.
It wasn't an armed insurrection. It was defense against northern (federal) oppression. And, it is happening again.

jcolson122 its part of the song like it or not, why alter the song.

@@anglobostonian So they could sing it without the lyrics or slightly change it up. Its a beautiful song about the state of Maryland
@@johnspinelli9396 um no it's not. It's a song urging Maryland and Marylanders to support the Confederacy. You've clearly never read the lyrics.
Now banned.
it's not "banned", it's just no longer official
