My guess is when critics of the show rail on "irony", they mean the off-handed comments like "it would rule if (the worst outcome possible) happened" because they're clearly jokes but these people are uncomfortable with humor.
A lot of these sort of "traditionalist" types think the only sort of acceptable humor is the kind where you make bad and predictable jokes about existing power structures like when you stomp historically marginalized sexualities and races into the ground with boomer humor. Make one joke about their holy grails however and they will be quivering and snivering at your doorstep like Jordan peterson because the humor suddenly isn't "funny" anymore and questions their power structures. It's why trolling communities like /pol/ became popular on 4chan. The entire userbase would consist of people that thought they were edgy and cool for humoring black people and minorities but would react like violent spastics when someone posted a picture of a white person with a black partner.
There would never be a Bernie Sanders style politician with these beliefs because everyone who is this socially conservative is also economically conservative in real life and that’s not going to change any time soon. As Matt said, this is like 15 weirdos online.
Social and economic conservatism complement each other to maintain social castes in their place. How are you going to be in favor of caring for the least of us while categorically denying at least half of humanity their agency?
How do you rationalize a Catholic theocracy and a classless society? Is everyone the pope? It's a hierarchical system where some people have more status and power over others, and their difference is explicit
There are still hierarchies under Marxism, it'd just be the proletariat making big decisions not 6 factory owners. Anarchism is the horizontal/opposed to hierarchy ideology and most marxists strongly disagree.
The difference between a hypothetical trad cath candidate and a Bernie Sanders figure is that the things Bernie Sanders advocates for are actually popular. That's a bizarro world comparison that would never become relevant in real life
