Bowie and Bolan together for the only time on record...this was the Holy Grail for me back in '72. Mick Ronson played on the album version, again flawlessly. Bolan and Ronson: true rock greats and sadly both no longer with us. Perhaps duetting up there somewhere...what a gig that would be.
Written for Angie, this was the follow up to "Space Oddity" and amazingly this beautiful song bombed, with a little over a 1000 copies sold in the UK back in 1970. Marc on guitar certainly, the "T.Rex" we know and love (Micky Finn, Steve Currie & Bill Legend) came a little later. A highlight of the song is the excellant string arrangement of Tony Visconti (producer) ... somewhat missing on the 1973 version (on Alladin Sane) where Mick Ronson stepped up to the plate for lead guitar ... bearly deviating from Bolan's near perfect original.
Thanks for this information. A life long Bolan fan I have only learned of his relationship with Bowie in recent years ( where have I been?) Great of you to share the details
bloody beautiful......no words can explain how i feel.....david....singing about our marc....just sooooo perfect...brings a tear to my eye every time i hear it......oh tanx thunderwing 77 xxxxxx
He took my heart when I was very young too, even my earliest thoughts were kidnapped by his mighty logic of all the things around me, for I like to think that it was a bless thought sometimes it seems like a heavy charge to me. Thanks for your comment and sorry for my strange English :)
This really is the more beautiful of the two versions. Very whimsical and romantic. The Aladdin Sane version sounds too coarse and cutting. But gorgeous. I wish this version had been included on AS, rather than re-recording it - perhaps it would be better known, and not left somewhat anonymously on a few choice compilations.
a lot of davids songs are underated nice to hear this version with marc im recording to mp3 one of my favourite david songs not every songs gonna be a hit just the way it is any way i like couldnt give a shit if others dont see what a good song it is
Besides, as an after-thought, I really doubt it would have hurt Bowie's record sales to have Bolan (by the time possibly the biggest rock star in the UK) on his album.
two of the prettiest stars together again.RIP.
Both were beautiful people i love Marc Bolan and David Bowie they were so amazing and talented people im glad i was a teenager of that era
I loved Bowie & Ziggy Stardust-It was made special when I learned he and Marc were friends of life.

He's not singing about Marc - he's singing about his girlfriend. His song about Marc is Lady Stardust....and then later everyone says Hi.
I love this version...

Yes it was! :D Bowie really loved Marc

It wasnt on an album, it was a single. Bolan got massive in 71 not 70.
You may be interested in this version which was recoreded as part of a Bolan Tribute a few years ago.

A beautiful cover, thank you very much David! :))
T Rex didnt play on this... just bolan
I think Marc was way hotter and way better looking then David!
Ps agreed! I love the singer from the rubettes
But Bowie has the cosmic edge, frankly!!!!
not a bad version, not as good a guitarist as the brilliant ronson, but a great little guitar piece.
ziggy stardust covers david bowie
uh?
forgive this but how do we know if his singing about marc
itstoogoodtopassby it was a song written for Bowies girlfriend he intended to propose to at the time
It was Lady Stardust that was written about Marc.
B+B=
together again
