Are people really saying that Anna doesn't know what she's doing? She STARTED on Broadway. She is the second youngest person to ever be nominated for a Tony. She knows what she's doing. She was obviously nervous... but who wouldn't be when they sing with Kristin Chenoweth? Also, Anna's an alto, isn't she? This song is high for an alto. She didn't hit any bum notes and stayed in tune the whole time. She didn't do nearly as bad as some of you are acting like she did. She didn't even do bad at all.
razrv3lc THANK YOU! This song was clearly written for a higher mezzo-soprano, which is a quarter octave or so higher than what Anna is. Technically, there is no such thing as an alto outside of choral singing, but to make it clearer, it's often added into the female vocal rage. Females are classified by five, if you include alto and mezzo-alto, voice types. Your voice type is the range in which you can comfortably sing. There's soprano, which is represented by Mariah Carey. You have mezzo-soprano, which is represented by Kristin Chenoweth. Then, mezzo-alto, which is represented by Idina Menzel. Next, alto, which is represented by Alicia Keys. Finally, your rare contraltos, which is represented by Adele. The mezzos are pretty loosely defined, while you can easily see see the contraltos and your sopranos. Many mezzos can sing up into the soprano range with practice, and many mezzo-sopranos don't even need practice, making them very hard to classify. Contraltos can't reach soprano if they tried, though they can pull off the low mezzo-alto scale with hard work. Sopranos can hit mezzo-soprano notes, but can't go much lower than a soprano. Only contraltos can really pull off contraltos, though a low alto may be able to get by. In this case, For Good was written for a mezzo-soprano and a mezzo-alto. Anna is not _technically_ an alto, as she doesn't fall low enough, but her voice is lower than Idina's, putting her in an in-between spot. Anna has had practice with a soprano role, through Into the Woods, but her comfortable range appears to be low mezzo-alto. She's also at the disadvantage of not having ten plus years of Broadway performances where she goes from a near soprano to an alto, which Idina does when she belts (especially when she doesn't use engage her head voice when belting with her chest voice). Idina has an impressive range throughout Wicked alone, and Anna hasn't had a ton of practice with that kind of up-and-down range. She also had the option of do-overs and over-recording audio in a studio after the fact when doing Into the Woods. Here she had one shot to just slightly raise her notes to hit the original ones. She did a spectacular job, considering she hit the notes and kept tune. She was nervous trying to fill Idina Menzel's shoes opposite Kristin Chenoweth (who wouldn't be?!?) and wasn't singing in her normal vocal range. She also hasn't had any Broadway experiences since she was twelve, and _a lot changes_ between 27, her age at the time, and 12. A Broadway song is a whole different type of singing, and she did _very_ well. She's not a belter, like Idina, she's more of a pop-Broadway artist. She did *amazingly* well, considering the circumstances, and I don't think we could've asked for a better performance
+razrv3lc Alto? You serious brah? Have you heard some of the crazy ass high notes she's belted? I'm a second soprano and I can't even belt some of the notes she considers "middle range".
What high notes are you talking about? I've never heard Anna hit any notes that I'd call crazy high. She doesn't really even belt that much. When I think of high belters, I think of people like Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Anna's voice isn't anything like those voices.
***** Endless...no. Certainly very impressive, but she doesn't have a comfortable high soprano or a contra-alto. But if you wanted to showcase her range, I would suggest "on the Steps of the Palace" from Into the Woods and "Still Hurting" from The Last Five Years, which showcase the top end of her range (Into the Woods) and the low end of her range (Last Five Years). Her most comfortable range, a mezzo-alto, is probably best showcased in Pitch Perfect.
FYI everyone acting like Anna doesn't know Broadway.... she is the second youngest person to ever be nominated for a Tony when she was Dinah in High Society....on Broadway...

First time I have seen Anna Kendrick be nervous - definately at the start. Of course, going with the original Glinda on Broadway must be nerve-wracking. She did a great job here despite the beginning.
One cool connection between these two is that Kristin was in her first Broadway musical in 1997 (Steel Pier) which starred the late Daniel McDonald (playing opposite Karen Ziemba) and Anna was in HER first Broadway musical (High Society) a year later which ALSO starred McDonald (playing opposite Melissa Errico).
Every time I see another video in which Kristin so willingly and openly sings this signature song of hers with others I get tears in my eyes. For one, the song is beautiful and has a great message, one that we all could learn from. Two, it shows what an open heart Kristin has whether singing it with Idina, or Anna or some young 9-year old girl she has never met who wrote to her before one of her shows. I had the good fortune to meet her after a performance during the pre-Broadway run of Wicked in San Francisco back in 2003 and she was the sweetest Broadway "star" I have ever met. My theater company was in the midst of rehearsing for a local production of Steel Pier (which sadly never came off) and when I told her that, she bubbled over about how much she had loved her time (sadly also short) in the broadway production. Chenoweth is a class act, and Anna is too. Kudos to them both.
I don't know why everyone gives Anna shit. I think she does a fantastic job of crossing over from film to theatre. She actually got her start in theatre and she can carry a tune without auto-tune which is better than I can say for a lot of actors that have been on broadway over the years. Get it, Anna!
I’m impressed with Kendrick this sort of song and notes that high are out of her comfort zone, she was also ridiculously nervous about singing with Kristen
Anna was amazing. I feel like people on here are just saying she wasn't good because everyone else is saying that. Of course she isn't Idina Menzel but her voice was beautiful and hit the high notes and everything. She was on Broadway and won awards so she's not just some random actress who likes to sing in her free time. She is completely qualified and was stunning.
I'll be blunt. Anyone calling out Anna's performance is an absolute moron. She matched Kristin and let's be serious, wasn't trying to be Idina...she doesn't have to try, she's amazing in her own right and career. Anyone saying otherwise clearly has no ear for music.
I have an ear for music and I understand what you mean about Anna matching Kristin. It is really annoying when others compare artists from each other because they each have their own styles. Music is a universal language that I guess not everyone can understand.
I'm impressed. Kristin has been doing this for a while. It's such a major part of her life. Anna could be like, a secret fangirl when it comes to this, but she really held her own here.
I just love both their faces throughout this entire song. Anna can't believe she's singing with Kristen and Kristen just has the most contagious smile ever as she watches Anna sing. Both of them are in complete adoration of each other and I love it!
FYI, Kendrick is one of only 2 performers in history to have been nominated for a Tony, which she was at the age of 12, an Oscar, which she was for Up in the Air, and to have a Billboard Top 10 Song, which she has with Cups. The only other person to achieve that is Barbara Streisand. She is definitely a vet of many types of vocal performance. And she has a better voice than most in Hollywood, on the radio and on Broadway. Megan Hilty is a broadway lifer, but Kendrick blows her away.
For those criticizing Anna's voice, listen to the song without watching the video. Though she's nervous at first, Anna's voice is stunning. It really is beautiful by itself. If you don't believe me, try it and see. And please don't write the BS that it's not Broadway worthy as she already has a Tony nomination, yet has rarely ever mentioned it, when she easily could have.
I had to listen the second time to appreciate what Anna Kendrick is doing here. She starts off cool, uncertain, a little out of breath, then as the song gets chugging along, she starts warming up and starts being truly amazing.
What is with everyone comparing Anna to Elphaba? She isn't being Elphaba here, nor would she play her. But Kristen isn't being Glinda here either. They are singing a song that happens to be from Wicked. Kristen does it at all of her shows with a guest singer (usually an audience member). So stop being like "Anna is so not Elphaba" cause she's not. Nor was she meant to be in this video. But she is amazing. Doubt it? What the new footage from Last Five Years. I had doubts, a lot of them, before I saw it, but I am so happy that she has met my expectations, at least in that clip and in the reviews so far from TIFF.
Not only that, but she must have been totally nervous and star struck to be singing with one of her idols. I mean, just look at what she says while they hug: "I can't believe I just got to do that!" Anna is amazing, and there is no way you can't love Kristin! I absolutely loved it. ^_^
Justin Giachetti No, no, no. Every time you reprise a song from a Broadway show, you must always, always _always_ become the character. It doesn't matter if you're in costume or not or if you've ever played the role. A song that hails from Broadway *DEMANDS* that you become the character, especially a tear-jerker with so much emotion, as this one is.For Good tells the story of two best friends realizing that they will never see each other again, and they're both trying to stay strong for each other while mentally breaking down inside and not wanting their time together to end. It's the final song before Glinda sees her best friend _die_, and you can't disgrace it by not becoming the characters. A Broadway song can't be done without recognizing that a Broadway song isn't just a song but a musical piece that tells a story between two characters. It's not some pop song, it's something that has a backstory and furthers it. If you want to sing Elphaba's part, you need to _be_ Elphaba. You can tell that Kristin was reliving her moments as Glinda, as she still moves her hands he way Glinda did, and she was playing Glinda's part. If Anna wasn't trying to be Elphaba, she a) wouldn't have performed this well, b) wouldn't have deserved to sing it, and c) would have made a big mistake. Anna _was_ Elphaba in this song, you could see it. She didn't have the memories of performing, but she felt the emotion and that's what's important. I completely disagree with your statement that Anna wasn't Elphaba, because she was. That being said, she made Elphie her own. She has a Broadway voice, but has adapted it to fit her film career. She can't belt like Idina ca, and what you should have made your comment about was that that's _okay_. Elphie is whoever the singer makes her, and if Anna chose to do that this way, then so be it. That's who Elphie was for this song. But to go and say that "Anna wasn't Elphie" is ruining everything this song stands for
Unicorn Films look up “Sarah Horn w/ Kristen Chenoweth For Good” there is an audience member at a concert who sang this better than Anna. Far better. LA Philharmonic partnered w/ Kristin Chenoweth 5 years ago. Kristin pulled a woman on stage who sang the song with a full orchestra, more accuracy, precision, and emotion than Anna. Sarah I’m sure having met far fewer “stars” than Anna has in her career was equally as nervous, with a LARGE crowd watching, and had not rehearsed..... and still sang it FAR better...
For those in these comments criticizing Anna's voice and technique in this song, this is the first time she's sang on stage since she was 17! That's about 11 years... Pretty good really, especially as she's not classically trained and never claimed to be a trained singer. It is frankly ridiculous because her voice is overwhelming in power and emotion, and puts the rest of us to shame. She "crushed it!"
Trust me, Kendrick knows what she it doing. She was the second youngest person to ever be nominated a Tony award and was the youngest girl to ever be nominated one. She also entered broadway at age twelve so.... SHE DOES KNOW WHAT SHE IS DOING!!!!
Anna is so strong to be able to sing while holding back so much emotion. I first saw her in Camp so I already knew she could sing. So happy for her getting to sing as Elphaba with Kristen.
This has to be the best rendition ive ever seen. And ive seen a lot of them recently; my mom died a month ago and i included for good in her video montage. I included this version because it gave me literal goosebumps.
8yrs later and still OMGAWD! When I'VE GONE TO HEAVEN, no matter what changes, this is my version of The Lord's Angels! 🌹🕊️🕊️🕊️ Kristen is an absolute Marvel and Anna just can be put on that pedestal right next to her.
Alright, I've seen some insightful comments and some shocking comments, so let me add my insight to this: 1.) For Good was written for Kristin and Idina. Idina's comfort zone lies just slightly above Anna's, and raising your notes just slightly is something that makes you think the singer is having an off-day or is not up-to-par, when in fact the song is not quite right for their voice. 2.) Reprising a Broadway role and filling a huge star's shoes alongside said star's original counterpart, who has quite a name as well, is *nerve-wracking*. You're likely to be nervous and not on your A-game. 3.) Anna has a Broadway voice, but has changed and adapted it to her film lifestyle. To go back to Broadway will require more practice than she had. For Good is a very Broadway-style show, and Anna doesn't have that anymore, so this song took a lot from her. 4.) Anna knows what she's doing. She started out her career as a twelve year old in High Society. Admittedly she hasn't done Broadway since, but she's had singing jobs in movies since. She can sing spectacularly well, in fact. 5.) Idina Menzel is best known for her belting. She can hold a powerful note for quite some time and still portray emotion. Anna Kendrick is _not_ a belter. Belting when you're not a belter is hard, and yet she held every note Idina did. 6.) She didn't miss a not or go off tune. She could've been louder, sure, but again, she's not a Broadway singer. I read one particular comment that said she wasn't being Elphie, and this has nothing to do with Anna's singing, but I want to address that. Sure, covering a pop song doesn't requite you to be the artist, but singing a Broadway song requires you to be the character. There are to types of songs, Broadway and recreational. Recreational means there's no backstory that isn't told thorough the song or easily explained in a sentence or two. Broadway means there's a backstory and that the song _is_ a character-developing story. Singing a Broadway song, whether in costume or not, means you are the character. Anna became Elphaba, and that's clear through her emotion and the fact that she did the song. That being said, every person who reprises a Broadway role has leeway to change the character, and that's what Anna did. She changed Elphie, and that's okay, but she *was* Elphaba. Saying a person is singing a Broadway song but not being the character is a disgrace to the song. Think about the "Defying Gravity" from Glee. It became a pointless pop song because the actors weren't Elphie. You have to _be_ the character to do Broadway, and that's exactly what Anna did. So, Bravo
I already read most of the hate comments about Anna and its kinda harsh. Well guys for one think Anna is not Idina Menzel nor she is Elphaba. She may start her career on Broadway, but guess what she is not anymore, she already do singing in movies and that is very far from how you do it in theatrical or Broadway-style. Anna already do her best, and to sing along side someone as famous as Kristin Chenoweth, everyone (and not just her) will definitely nervous and can't be on your A-game (not to mention she must sing Idina part and it was expected from her to be as good as Idina herself). So give her credit guys, she already do her best.
I think the part about glee was contradicting to yourself because it's not a pointless pop song bc of glee they actually pretend to act and be the characters of Glenda and elphaba watch the actual show before judging
Alex LaCrosse no she honestly wasn’t. This song was written for a mezzo-soprano. Anna is an alto and even though the song was written specifically for Kristin and Idina she still did a good job. She started in broadway after all and has been nominated for a tony because of her talent. She knows what she’s doing and adjusts herself to fit the song. Music is never continuously sang the same way a song is made by its performer not by a judgemental person who couldn’t perform like that if you paid them.
very sweet----Kristin was amazing (as always)---and Anna Kendrick brought some heart and vocal talent to the table as a young girl----Let's enjoy it for what it is---simply heartfelt, beautiful, and sweet!
I can see people saying Anna Kendrick isn't her or isn't singing like her correctly but you can see that she is clearly nervous singing with Kristen and she is not anyone else. She is *Anna Kendrick*
What a beautiful song! What wonderful lyrics! What a fabulous duet! I love all versions by different artists. This is great too. Both ladies are EXTRAORDINARY humans and extremely talented. I love the emotion put into the performance and how Kristin's being supportive of Anna because she was maybe a little nervous! Lovely. ✨
Anna hurray.. your so good... It's not just the way you sing but also the way you deliver your song with your beautiful face and smile, I love it the most
First of all, I love that there are so many comments on how Anna's ACTUALLY AMAZING that I can't even find any that are saying otherwise. Secondly, I just love how I thought Anna was being all mature and stuff while onstage, but right at the end, she grins at Kristen and when they finish she goes, "I can't believe I just got to do that! That was amazing!" and I'm like oh damn I missed you goofy Anna Kendrick :)
When singers hold their stomachs for a long period of time. They are nervous. At least Anna had the guts to get up there and sing unlike most of you haters looking for attention.
Monet Fitchers I agree with you! However, when singers hold their stomachs, it’s not because they are nervous. It’s because they are focusing on their breathing and diaphragm. I am a singer and I take voice lessons and I have been taught to put my hand on my diaphragm to pay attention to my breathing.
I hold my stomach when I sing it's not because I'm nervous I am a first sprono so I sing extremely high when I hold my stomach I'm focusing on my breath control making sure I have enough power and air to sustain my high notes I put my hand on my stomach to keep reminding myself the right way to breath while I sing and keep my high notes strong and not screechy
This is bringing me to tears! Anna did just amazing when i looked at Kristen she was looking at Anna as if she were her daughter! stop hating its not kind and she did Pitch Perfect! lol
anna was so good. and just because she doesn't do Broadway any more doesn't make her worse at it she has changed her voice to deal with movies like pitch perfect and yet she was in last five years and into the woods which shows she still has the capability to sing Broadway songs meaning she can sing both.
Kendrick, Cheno and For Good is like me drinking 5 cups of espressos. I'm so high my hands are shaking uncontrollably.! "So much of me, is made of what I've learned from you!"

I mean, just look at what she says while they hug: "I can't believe I just got to do that!"
Anna is amazing, and there is no way you can't love Kristin!
P
Both girls nailed it! This was a brilliant duet! One of the best I've ever heard for this song. Bravo to both beautiful ladies!!!
Omg Anna. She gave me the chills. Shes amazing! Go Anna!
Anna voice is really suitable for accapela. it is so smooth that it slayed my existence.
What a moment for Anna. Those 2 are such great singers, love them both.
That was so touching. I love Anna Kendrick, her voice is amazing.
This has to be the best rendition ive ever seen. And ive seen a lot of them recently; my mom died a month ago and i included for good in her video montage. I included this version because it gave me literal goosebumps.
I love what Anna did with her part 🖤 it's so beautiful and different from what idina usually does and I think it lends some new youth into it
Anna's voice is really amazing soothing to the ears. Really love her.
Anna has an AMAZING voice!! OMG!!!
I am still so obsessed with this performance and I think Anna is a fantastic singer. She'd never beat Kristen but she's still fantastic.
Alright, I've seen some insightful comments and some shocking comments, so let me add my insight to this:
1.) For Good was written for Kristin and Idina.
So, Bravo
Laureen Connor who are YOU?!
No Anna is off almost every note
This is a beautiful duet. Congrats to Anna and Kristen for the heartfelt moment 👏👏👏👏
Anna has been singing for a long time and is nominated for a Tong on Broadway. So I would say she definitely knows what she is doing and is fabulous.
I always knew Anna had a great voice, but DAMN SHES SO MUCH MORE AMAZING THAT I KNEW
I love this. How joyful Anna is to be there and how kind and excited Kristen is for her. That made me smile.
Great job ladies
This was lovely!
Anna made it her own and they complimented each other really well.
I'm literally crying right now... I freaking love wicked and for good is my favorite song from it and they just made it even better.

This is so good and Kristin gets so emotional when she sings this song :)
I loved this!!!! Anna’s reaction at the end was amazing! She has a beautiful voice! ❤
I absolutely LOVE the intonation and little flurls that Anna uses in this rendition!! :)
very sweet----Kristin was amazing (as always)---and Anna Kendrick brought some heart and vocal talent to the table as a young girl----Let's enjoy it for what it is---simply heartfelt, beautiful, and sweet!
This is beautiful. Their voices sound amazing together!
I just love this clip. Both actors/singers are fabulous. It's real, it's raw and it's etched in my mind forever.
Beautiful!
Anna Kendrick's high note at the end was amazing 😍😍🤩
Guys Anna has already been on broadway and was nominated for a tony for her performance
2:20 God, that flip into her head voice was so clean.
This is truly everything to me. Kirstin and Anna 🥹🥹
I love Anna Kendrick so much ❤️😘
I can see people saying Anna Kendrick isn't her or isn't singing like her correctly but you can see that she is clearly nervous singing with Kristen and she is not anyone else.
Lovely. ✨
I love the quality of Anna's voice. She sounds so natural. She does not need her voice altered to sound amazing.
Why did this make me cry? So beautiful 😭
Absolute chills. Love both of these ladies - beautiful.
Two of the best there are.
this was AMAZING!!!! plus anna’s reaction afterwards was actually golden and authentic!!! loveeed it!!!!!
Well done. I love how proud Kristin is of Anna. I started to tear up!
It's 2022 and this still makes me smile! Also, Kendrick was awesome here! Payt me!
Beautiful performance by both!!! 💖💖💖
2 small ladies with big voices. Beautiful. Always love Anna Kendrick.
Anna always sieze to amaze me. .i love this girl period
For the record, Anna is a Tony nominated theatre actor so...
So? Doesn't mean she's right for this song or holds up to Kristin's stronger voice.
🙄can ppl quit the hate like it’s a cute song and she looked really exited slash nervous to perform with Kristin can u just be happy for her
She can't sing or act and is really unattractive. I won't watch anything with her in.
@@antoniabaker7770 jealous, much?
@@annafowdy of that, hell no.
Monet Fitchers right like its hard song to sing like I couldn’t do it for sure
Dylan Simone I can confirm that this fact is indeed true because I do that too
I hold my stomach when I sing it's not because I'm nervous I am a first sprono so I sing extremely high when I hold my stomach I'm focusing on my breath control making sure I have enough power and air to sustain my high notes I put my hand on my stomach to keep reminding myself the right way to breath while I sing and keep my high notes strong and not screechy
Body language cues are different for different people. And in different contexts. Singers hold their stomachs to focus on their breath and diaphragm.
just gonna say that these two ladies are perfect and i havent cried this much in ages
This is bringing me to tears! Anna did just amazing
when i looked at Kristen she was looking at
Anna as if she were her daughter! stop hating
its not kind and she did Pitch Perfect! lol
That harmony blend is sublime!!!
I love Anna Kendricks!!!And I like Anna's voice ^^
What a privilege and honor to be on the same stage with Kristin. Anna has an amazing voice!
Anna was crazy awesome. Couldn't have been easy, trying to match Kristin and match Idina Menzel's version. Always loved Anna's voice..
OMG I came back to my musical heart and I love you Kristin, Anna u came so far to have the honor with a legend. LOVE YOU BOTH
Whatever people say...
I still love anna kendrick,
Anna do her best
And I will said she is the best!
Anyone who thinks Anna Kendrick can't perform doesn't understand musicality. They are both wonderful. Anna is amazing.
GOOSEBUMPS every time I hear that song
wow! they made a great harmony.
We sang this song like 3 years ago for my retirering 6th grade teacher and this brought me to tears 😭
What a beautiful rendition of that song; they are both amazing.
anna was so good. and just because she doesn't do Broadway any more doesn't make her worse at it she has changed her voice to deal with movies like pitch perfect and yet she was in last five years and into the woods which shows she still has the capability to sing Broadway songs meaning she can sing both.
Simply beautiful! I play Elphaba's part in a school play, and I've watched this a million times.
Kendrick, Cheno and For Good is like me drinking 5 cups of espressos. I'm so high my hands are shaking uncontrollably.! "So much of me, is made of what I've learned from you!"
I've listened to this song so many times but this performance made me cry (": they were beautiful together (":
That was fricken MAGIC.. Love them!
WHEN SHE PULLED HER IN FOR THE HUG OMG
Anna does amazingly. So she's not Idina Menzel? No one is.. lol
well, Idina is
saraly117 well idina menzel is plus she’s better than her in my opinion 🥰
Lea Michele is
Yes, she's great in her own way. I really like her in this one.
Well, no one but..ya know, Indian Menzel herself...?
Anna is Amazing!
their voices are so different, but so beautiful together
Appreciate and recognise the amazing talent of these two women,
And THEN appreciate their incredible beauty
Wonderful humans 😍
They’re both AMAZING!
They both showed exceptional talents... since i started watching this video... cant stop listening to it OVER and OVER again... 😂😄😅
