Nice Pete. New grooves always win. We have noticed a difference between chrome plated and unplated when new. The chrome plate will ever so slightly round off the grooves. So new but unplated (Raw) for the most spin. Chrome plating will make the wedge more durable and resistant to rusting.

I would like to see a rusty wedge vs a chrome wedge after 3-6 months of use and see if it maintains the spin better with wear and tear.

I love golf and UA-cam. I also occasionally suffer with insomnia. I find that if I can’t sleep, popping on a Pete Finch video sends me into a night of slumber no problem within 10 minutes. Pete hasn’t fixed my hook, but he’s fixed the insomnia. Thank Pete. You’re the best.

Amazing you posted this just now. I was researching this very topic the past few days as I love the look of a brand new raw wedge, but not when it ages and rusts. I’m keen to understand how easy or not it would be to maintain a ‘like-new’ raw finish ?

I absolutely love the weathered look of rusty wedges. An oxidized copper wedge would look amazing with the turquoise color, but I've never seen that before, so I'm assuming it doesn't work.

Love the rusty patina look of raw wedges. Definitely helps in the sun. If you don’t like the rust patina just keep them dry and they won’t rust.

Yes my God thank you finally someone comparing the same two wedges Apples to Apples good grief I've seen so many videos where someone is comparing a rusted 5-year-old Cleveland wedge to a brand new Vokey 😀
The grooves on that Cleveland were worn down years ago no amount of rust would help you've got to have a rusted brand new wedge versus a non-rusted brand New wedge same brand and make with the same golfer hitting the shots

    • @BuffaloNickel9
      @BuffaloNickel9 Рік тому

But why, if the 10-year-old Cleveland should be perfect right because it's got 10 years of rust hahaha yeah and 9 years ago the grooves went bad

I have A set of Cleveland RTX-3 wedges that are well seasoned. Bought them used 4 years ago. I buy used clubs only if there are good pictures and these were shaping up nicely so I couldn't resist. Will have to update soon but still hit them pretty well!

I had a Cobra trusty rusty 59° for years and enjoyed it. I do prefer the chrome finish of the Volkey SM6 's that I've been using the past few years. I suppose it just comes down to personal preference.

I had all my irons which are soft forged stainless, professionally milled at a machine shop. They milled the faces perfectly flat by removing 0.05mm, or 1/20th of a mm from the face. Changed the weight of each club by less than 1 gram. And then they refilled the grooves the same amount to maintain regulation. They then sand blasted the striking face. This cost me $300 bucks. Worth it as I love my irons and don't want to pay $2K for new ones. WOW!. Such a different ce in confidence and the compliments I get from those who see them is nice also. Quality older irons with a bit of love and skill are so rewarding and remain very relevant in the modern game.

On a recent golficity podcast, they interviewed one of the wedge guys from the tour truck. He mentioned that the only reason most tour players use the raw finish is because they have a custom grind, and would end up stripping the chrome/black finish off in that process anyway, and would therefore look terrible.

Yeah I've done my own testing, grinding the bounce of a set of old chrome plated wedges and it ends up looking pretty bad. Especially true if you over-heat the plating slightly, you end up bluing the chrome, and the transition from raw to chrome can turn a straw color.

Anyways I play the darker gray SM8s so feel like it's new and and has the most current technology and cut the chrome shine problems. This video has made me very much won't to hit a rusty and see if that feel of no confidence turns to alot. Will see ! Thanks Peter, this is an interesting comparison, but not all of us have all that UA-cam cash to go buy a new wedge after every round. I would live to see a comparison of these same wedges in November (all be it with equal playing time & usage). If the rusty head out performs the used raw head, then the debate has merit.

    Hello Peter,
    first of all nice Video.
My thoughts on this ... rusting starts most of the time on the edges and thin micro parts with a lot of surface to the air. So the rust de-sharpen this edges and micro texture ... and this again is in my thoughts responsible for the spin of the ball while interacting with the soft urethane cover. Thats why always a fresh wedge, no matter raw, satin or whatever outperforms a rusty wedge. And like on every wedge, these micro textures loose their sharpness over time, from rust, sand, dirt or brushing or whatever. And i think the rusty crystals (iron oxygen) are not that stable to create more spin like fresh cnc milled metal. :)
Greetings and sorry for my bad english

  • @TomH001
    @TomH001 2 роки тому +2

I always thought the premise of a rusty wedge that it kept the spinrates up when it started rusting , I never thought it would outperform a brand new wedge .. When I got my TM milled grinds they spun a lot , now a little bit less , and when they start rusting over they would simply not lose as much compared to a " regular " wedge , but I guess you had a different outlook on it

I played a raw jaws the entire time I have played golf. Until they outlawed the Mac Daddy grooves. I used to clean them then aquired a taste for the raw patina. But you have to remove the orange rust and leave the rest. 0000 steel wool very lightly. The face stayed pretty clean in the impact area because I used it every day. When it got nicks and worn grooves, I would take a a knife sharpening diamond stone and clean it up. Then some Japanese wet stones that were planed perfectly flat with the diamond stone. Resurfacing the face would make the grooves very sharp again. Like new. The wet stones would put a grey "patina like" finish on it that looked pretty cool. I miss that club. Been stuck playing a dark Jaws MD5's since I retired it. Waiting to get the raw version in T grind. Backordered because of the scamdemic.

It’s my belief that the rusty wedge keeps the spin for longer than a wedge that is getting older. Meaning a new wedge is the best spinning option due to new grooves, however you’ll not have to renew your wedges as often when they rust as opposed to the wedges which aren’t designed to rust. They say you should renew a wedge every 2 years to keep the spin but a rusting wedge will be good for 4 years plus.

You know I have a question. Why don't they just use a stainless steel plate as the grooves? Then your clubs would never rust and never wear down. You could make it where it would weigh the same or less. It's like they have to make all clubs as cheap as possible and sell them for as high as possible. Like a 800 dollar driver has maybe 40 dollars of materials in it.

I’ve never got the theory behind rusty wedges giving you more spin. At the end of the day rust is the metal oxidising which ultimately means material will be being lost from the face resulting in less friction from the milling process and less sharpe grooves. It’s purely aesthetics

I'd be interested to see if a chrome wedge has more spin after say 500 balls hit vs a raw wedge. With a harder, more durable finish, I'd wonder if the grooves would hold up better.

  • @maalekar

Ive got Cleaveland RTX 52 and 56 wedges that are raw. They rust... fast. If they get wet the rust is on next day (rain). The one thing I have noticed now that I have had them 3 years is that they seem worn quite a bit. I just bought a new RTX 60 full face and the grooves look to me to be noticeably not as pronounced or "edgy" as the new club. I bought a groove sharpener which I plan to apply to them just to get the grooves back on those two clubs. With the cost of these wedges being about $175 each the sharpener seems a reasonable and cheap "fix". I don't play professionally and don't care if someone wants to say "that's not legal on the course"... too bad, I will say the new 60 has significantly pronounced backspin, like scary levels. I have to land the ball past the pin in play lest it roll back past too far.

  • @davidgraham8058

Pete, the real test should be between an old rusted wedge and one that is equally old but hasn't rusted. The rusted one will probably spin more as the rust helps compared to eroded grooves. Whatever the answer, nothing will spin better than a brand new wedge, which is why the best players in the world change their wedges every few rounds or 2-3 tournaments depending on their technique.

    Hello peter.
Scientifically rust makes metal softer. Hence the softer “feel” it’s a natural thing medal does if exposed. It makes it softer because the shiny” we see is added to give it the shine, once that extra is gone

The problem I had with the brand new vs rusty comparison is that they do not portray what the rust actually does. Especially with the TM MG
I’ve played my MG2 coming up on 2 years (75-100rounds per year) now, the first year I meticulously cleaned them to the point no rust had developed on the faces. (Tooth brush and dish soap after every round as I do)
Brand new they had an almost sand paper feel, after use the face smoothed off, a LOT, and that’s where the spin was noticeably reduced.
After thinking about the performance drop, I did a day of salt bathing the clubs, and really rusted them up.
The spin was noticeably higher. Not brand new high, but much closer to new than with wear.
I’m on my third cycle of purposeful rusting and am more than happy with the lasting performance of the raw face.
The grooves are holding up with a little attention, and I’m sure I can get another season at least before I pick up some MG3’s
    Just my 2 cents.

One problem I have with a rusted wedge.....when you hit a few during a round you will knock off the rust from the face as iron oxide is not tenacious like chromium oxide, meaning you may change the amount of spin you see during your round (also for the taylormade comment on roughness, you can manufacture to whatever roughness you want). Would a tour pro chance this change during a round where if they are off by a couple of feet it could mean not winning? That being said I have a raw wedge....simply was the cheapest thing i could find and i love it :D

I grew up playing in fla, with an infinite number of sunny playable days. I’ve used raw wedges as far back as I can remember. It’s purely for the lack of glare. It’s terrible not being able to see a ball in a bunker because as soon as you put that chrome down it’s blinding you.
