I specifically remember a game back in the late 80’s when he was in his prime. A game against the Astros went into extra innings. Lasorda left him in the game through the 10th inning! This man was a workhorse.
I used to live 3 doors from Orel outside of Buffalo (on Sunrise Blvd./Lynn Lea in Williamsville, NY) when he was 6 yrs. old. He used to come over to my house and ask to play catch with me or one of my brothers. I followed his progress through the minors and met up with him on the Friday night at Dodger Stadium in 1988 before he started his Major League record consecutive scoreless inning streak.
1988 baseball season was the year of Hershiser. He took down both the Mets and the Dodgers who were powerhouses in their leagues. He should have won both Cy Young and the MVP that season. Brings back memories of my childhood watching this video. And I am a Yankee fan btw.
This was the first World Series I ever saw. Never was sure if I would see the Dodgers ever win another World Series. But hey, 32 years later and it happened.
Never gets old. Consider myself quite fortunate to have witnessed this unfold on live television. Orel is a once in a generation type talent. #forever1988
I was hoping that season would of been equivalent to the 2018 dodgers at the time. Fun postseason run 7 game nlcs but instead of 104 win it would of been the 108 win red sox team and the muncy historic walk off homer but oh well 🥲 @ckendall67
I always like those grey road jerseys the dodgers had that double stitching beautiful made, the Dodger organization should bring those grey 1988 jerseys back they look good I’ll buy one 👍😊
Anybody who really followed Hershiser and Valenzuela's careers know that unlike the vast majority of Dodger pitchers throughout their history, these two were actually always CLUTCH BIG-GAME pitchers throughout their careers.
It's kind of ironic perhaps that Fernando struggled badly in 1988 & was not available to pitch in the postseason, but Hershiser practically picked up the slack and then some.
The difference between Tommy Lasorda, and everyone else. Had Lasorda managed the Dodgers in 2017 and 2018, you knew that he would have Outwitted Alex Cora in the World Series both years.
I love how casual and calm Hershiser's celebration is after that final out. No shouting, no jumping and screaming, nothing but a small shake of the fist as if he's just won a regular season game and nothing more. It reminds me a lot of Randy Johnson's reaction after he got his perfect game. "Meh. Just another day at the office."
1988 been a long time.... I was only 3 years old... I think I’ll really enjoy a World Series Championship now .. LETS GOOOOO..... OT19.. DODGERS AND RAMS....!!!! Perfect Storm....
Congrats to the Dodgers who won WS last week for the first time since 88. Imagine how many things have changed socially, politically, technologically, health, and globally since the Dodgers won their last championship.
And that year the A's had the much weaker regular season record( 90-72 )compared to the Dodgers( 102-60 )BUT the A's had won back-to-back WS titles the previous 2 years and had that experience as an advantage on their side, not to mention the pressure of trying to win 3 straight championships, which they did successfully.
ckendall67 After Game 5 of the 1974 World Series was over with the A’s prevailing over the Dodgers in 5 Games, when broadcasting the final score on KABC Radio 790 AM - Los Angeles(The Dodgers Radio Station), Dodgers Broadcaster Vin Scully called them “The Young, Inexperienced Dodgers”.
Back when there were no such thing as closing relief pitching. Just looked it up, Hershiser threw 117 pitches, with his last season game throwing over 160 they were animals back then.
Orel Hershiser and José Rijo were the difference in 1988 and 1990 for the Dodgers and Reds, they neutralized Big Guys like José Canseco and Mark McGwire.
@@pastortimhahn4343 thanks! I’ve since figured it out, turns out I had in fact heard it before. Previously I had only known Andrew Gold for singing “Spooky Scary Skeletons”.
I think Lasorda himself gave Hershiser that nickname because he had said to Hershiser entering that season that he wanted Hershiser to be more like a 'bulldog' out on the mound, to throw strikes and not be afraid to challenge hitters at the plate more often. He knew Hershiser could be a much more effective pitcher during games if he just pushed him harder. And it certainly worked in 1988.
I don't know if it's just me but when he used to throw those when we were younger learning by sight and we used to watch him he was more than a hero even one game his base hit was our grandslam Homer when he was younger you could just see his whole arm just his entire body just bocoming like a slingshot... We had to learn that all and those fights are pushed up for weapons for God here on earth sorry Mel Gibson you have to go.... LA wants it gone Whittier's la vida CA. Mike
The 1988 and 1990 World Series were the worst ever, I was an Oakland A´s fan then and seeing them lose to the Dodgers in 1988 and to the Reds in 1990 made me think that Baseball had no sense because Oakland was the best team from 1988 to 1990 and only winning one World Series was painful.
Canseco has a good explanation for why they lost the ‘88 series…EVERYTHING went right for the Dodgers: 1) Guys walked 2) Pinch hitters got hits 3) Batters hit HRs who only hit 10-12 during the regular season 4) Hersheiser was un-hittable as a pitcher and even HE got an RBI double for himself. But you’re right, it’s crazy that Oakland only won one WS with that team 🤷

The original comment was that La Raza ruined LA, but in actuality it's LA, a European creation, that ruined La Raza.
It’s so good to hear Vin’s voice.
One of the grittiest, most brilliant pitching efforts over a sustained period of time that I've ever seen. Bulldog was simply incredible in 1988.
Hershiser & Kirk Gibson, the two players who helped spearhead the 1988 Dodgers and their improbable run to a World Series championship that year.

Hershiser's last strikeout looks so damn badass.

Coincido en ese punto contigo amigo él es único
Thinking of my dad who took me to see my childhood hero pitch at Dodgers stadium. Thank you Orel and thank you Dad! 💕
My favorite Dodger team of all time. Like David vs 2 Goliaths. First the Mets, then the A’s
Like Lasorda said, nobody thought they'd beat the mighty Mets or the team that won 104 games. But they believed. :-)
Yeah that’s clutch now a days winning as favorites

They don't make too many like him anymore. What a run he had that year.

Can add buehler to that list
The most amazing thing about this game is that the As actually managed to score 2 runs.
Dave Roberts would have pulled Hershiser in the 6th for a reliever, and blow the game. lol
Facts but if you take a look at it overuse would later affect Hershiser
Shoulda pulled Hershiser out of the broadcasting booth instead of Darvish.
😂😂😂😂 ikr
And look what he did again today smh

His curve ball was just nasty
Orel Hershiser is the greatest pitcher of all time
Don’t know about that.
Cy Young .....
That 1988 season could possibly be the greatest season by a pitcher of all time.
That 2 1/2 month stretch of that season was about as sublime for a pitcher as any in MLB history.
Sandy Koufax
He aged really well, I mean... he looks better now 😅
Underrated.
Hershiser may as well have been God at this point on the mound. It was almost like he was playing a video game and discovered a cheat code.
Unforgettable
Who’s here after the dodgers won it all

14 years later, it was The Los Angeles Dodgers who celebrated Winning the World Series at Oakland in Game 5.
In 1974, it was the other way around.

I'm pretty sure that was the theme to "Golden Girls" being played over the PA after the last out was made. Weird.
Thank you for being a friend
Back when there were no such thing as closing relief pitching. Just looked it up, Hershiser threw 117 pitches, with his last season game throwing over 160 they were animals back then.
Relief pitching was used only when needed, not because, “well, it’s the 6th inning.”
Hershiser, Valenzuela, etc, would often pitch complete games.
I wear that LA and Brooklyn stuff all the time
Dodgers went into beast mode.
Who's watching Urias trying to close out Tampa?
Those breaking pitches are vicious
I was 7 years old crying my eyes out when this happened, I have hated the Dodgers ever since lol
