This song is inspired by the experience of imprisonment lived by De André and his wife Dori Ghezzi, following the kidnapping that took place on the evening of 27 August 1979. The title of the song refers to the Supramonte, the mountain range that winds through the central area eastern Sardinia, which has always been a hiding place for bandits, fugitives and smugglers. In the 70's in Italy many kidnappings took place, especially by Sardinians. The two were held captive for nearly four months, then released following the payment of a ransom.

and you don't say a important thing, he, songwriter and poet, always close to the lasts, to the poor, forgave them, because the sardinia people in that time had nothing.

In Italy he is considered the greatest italian songwriter of all times. And I think he really is. His lyrics are of a moral, literary and spiritual depth that has never had an equal in Italy. Perhaps only giants like Cohen, Brassens and Dylan can compete with these lyrics, which not surprisingly are also studied in Italian schools.
Thank you for highlighting this beautiful song

In 1979 he and his wife Dori Ghezzi (she was a singer herself) were kidnapped in Sardegna by some bandits and kept prisoner for several months among the woods and mountains of the region. They were finally set free after the payment of a considerable amount of money. De André in the process forgave the jailers (not the mandators) saying that he comprehended the reasons why they acted that way. He also added that during the imprisonment, he and his wife suffered, the jailers showed humanity towards them.
The "Supramonte" is a very wild area of the Sardegna island were they were kept prisoner. The song title is "Hotel Supramonte".

@@nielsensTVDK Thank you for sharing this beautiful song. Hope you're going to react to some more of Fabrizio De André songs. Fabrizio is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century in Italy and his songs are pure poetry in fact. Beyond the music the real beauty of his work is in the lyrics and that's why it is important to have a translation of his songs in order to get really into them and appreciate the moral meaning he always expresses. If you get into his world you'll remain fascinated forever. He is the poet of the marginalized people, of those who are the last in society and have no voice. At his funerals you could have seen whores mourning next to important people of the high society...he has been able through his songs and voice to unite the firsts to the lasts under the same roof called humanity and compassion. His songs are full of comprehension for the neglected ones and full of questions for those who rule the world and are simply humans. He also believed that a man cannot be judge of another. In any case it would be a long speech. If you want listen to some others songs, he is the greatest italian singer songwriter. There's another great poet in italian music. He is 80 and doesn't compose anymore his name is Francesco Guccini and in my opinion he and De André are the pillars of the 20th century's second decade of italian culture. Thanks.

De André is one of the greatest song writer/story teller/ chansonièr of all times... Unfortunately you don't speak Italian (and French!) 🙂 But if he reminded you of Leonard Cohen that means you are on the right track....
But It would be wrong defining him as "the Italian B. Dylan or L. Cohen"! De André is great on his own and can't be compared to no others!
(mine isn't arrogance because what I say isn't my personal opinion but shared acknowledgement, trust me..)

I think we as a society are not used to this kind of songs anymore. De André wasn't just great for the music, he actually reached his highest peaks with the lyrics: war, folklore, religion, lives of the outcasts, politics, poetry, floads, dialects, regional traditions and foods, mafia (reminder for the rest of the world: mafia is not some cool twisted Robin Hood, it's Italy's most horrible and shameful plague)... I would always suggest looking at the translated lyrics while listening to one of his songs (though of course a translation is never equal to the original).
He actually had something to speak about, something that went beyond the more common "I need to find myself / I'm in love / I'm sad / I'm happy". He told stories, and he enchanted us with them. We definitely lost him too soon.
