How we use Tractor Supply 40# Pelletized Animal /Equine Bedding Part 1

- We have tried almost every bedding option at #MapleRockFarmNY and the #tractorsupply Pelletized Bedding works best for us.
Our rescue Donkeys typically come from settings where they have been either starved or malnutrished and they tend to eat whatever we put down, ie wood chips, staw, etc. We do not have enough dry storage for large truckload sawdust deliveries like most small farms, so these bags are an excellent and easy solution.
The pellets expand when liquid is applied so you have to EXTREMELY CAREFUL when using with animals who may eat them. If expansion occurs inside their stomachs you could have a very serious health issue on you hands that could be fatal. Because of this concern and so many people asking how to use them we thought this video would help.
In the video we prepare (3) 40# bags using an unmeasured amount of hot water. When mixing at the barn we find 5 gallons per bag is perfect. Warm water works best, significantly better in fact during the cold months. It's a perfect use of the water in your heated waterers when you are doing a clean out, mluch better than just pouring it out! Anytime we are going to clean them we use the water to make a refresher bag at the barn.

What's it look like after it's been wet then it drys ?
It just looks a little lighter in color. Then darker in color as they walk in with anything on their hooves. Several of our rescues eat the shavings so rarely do a full clean out and add fresh. We generally add fresh and mix it in with the muddied shavings so its less attractive to eat
Doesn’t this much water defeat the purpose of it soaking up urine?
Absolutely not. The water added just fluffs it up and breaks up the pellets. It becomes completely dry to the touch shortly after spreading. Leaving the pellets poses a danger if ingested
Did your animals die when they ate it ?
They did not. But they ate very little before it puffed up. Luckily thier feet were soaked because the snow. Now that we fluff it never had an issue...plus it covers 5x as much fluffed!
