- A visual history of the BBC's radio network told primarily through the logos and jingles of its stations.
The BBC was slow to adopt audio and/or visual idents for its radio stations. Some logos have therefore been specially created for this presentation.
This video looks at the early years of the BBC from its inception through to the 1960s.
Babe Wake up, TV and Radio Timelines have posted a new video
i had the same idea
This Is London... BBC World Service
1 Mei 1965 6:26
BBC Light MW LW 6:55
Radio 3 MW 6:58
Radio 2 LW 7:18
BBC 3 7:30
BBC Home
Interestingly, during the war all of the transmitter masts switched to the same two or three frequencies throughout the whole country so that enemy aircraft could not use regional radio frequencies as homing beacons.
Sorry for the delayed response, I have been travelling and only returned to the UK today, Thanks for the feedback - fascinating!
“But babe what about ou-“
“SHUT UP TV AND RADIO TIMELINES POSTED A VIDEO”
Another great content , very informative. Regards mark
Sorry for the delayed reply: I have been travelling and only returned to the UK today. THanks for the kind words - much appreciated!
Hes back
Oooooo now we're talking! ❤
THIS IS 2LO!
Any Idea why the BBC Radio stations in the early 20's were named that?
I believe it is descended from when pre speech wireless stations used a unique morse code identifier. A short 3 character code that could be easily transmitted in Morse transferred to the early days of speech radio.
What's the music for BBC General Forces Programme?
It is called "Imperial Echoes". More here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Echoes
10:52 this might be the weirdest sound i've ever heard
Apologies for the delay in replying - I have been travelling and only returned to the UK today. Yet another "classic" from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop...!
Can you help me find the logos please?
Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been travelling and only got back to the UK today. I am sorry too that I do not really understand your question: what logos do you want me to help you find???
Are they the Logos?
Sorry for the slightly delayed response: I have been travelling and only returned to the UK today. As I mentioned in the notes at the end of the video, the BBC was slow to adopt audio and/or visual idents. In the absence of original material,
some of the idents in this presentation have been created purely for illustrative purposes. They are, however, based on material from the time (e.g. the BBC main logo, some printed advertising promotion, children's club badges, etc) but they are not all "genuine" as such.
those british callsigns is similar to australian callsigns
Hi, call signs were issued had a m or g within the Uk, same for radio Hams , thus was a world ad all countries had there own letter . Regards mark G8rde
Apologies for the delayed response - I have been travelling and only returned to the UK today. That is interesting: I guess much was similar in the very early days.
Any idea what the music at 11:15 is?
Apparently, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop created individual (slightly weird, to be honest) jingles/themes for the earliest local BBC stations. This is one of them.
@@tvradiotimelinesAh that would make sense. It sounds like the opening theme of a children's programme about telling the time, or something along those lines!
@@GryphLane Incredible that it comes from the same source as the Doctor Who theme!
@@tvradiotimelines they made the radio sheffield has a knife, fork and spoon to make sounds
@@NelvanaFan1971 Probably made from Sheffield Steel! 😅
Why didn't you include the temporary stations during lockdown?
Because this video is about the 1920s-1960s. The temporary stations will feature in later episodes.
Did you read the videos title? 😅
This one only covers up to the 1960s
@@whatamalikeYeah, I can see now.
