RE: SENDING ME YOUR SOP / PERSONAL STATEMENT FOR FEEDBACK - Unless you sent me your essay before this comment was posted, please go through my Patreon page in order to receive my feedback, and other kinds of help with the application / SoP / interview! www.patreon.com/jakubtansey Demand was too high for me to feasibly continue doing it for free, but I hope you guys can enjoy everything new I'm offering as a result :)
I love that your reiterated points were about keeping the SOP concise and to the point, and your video was exactly that too - no waffle! we love to see it
Prospective UK JET here! Been watching your videos for quite a while and I graduated from university in July so I finally got to submit my application this year. Just need to get my statement of physician and second reference, then I can sit back and enjoy the agonising wait. I can't thank you enough for your super funny and informative videos :)
Thank you again for the help with my SOP. It definitely helped me feel confident in my work thus far and allowed me to reassess the reasons why I'm passionate about taking part in JET.
If you have any further questions or need advice on something I didn't mention, comment below! Chances are there's someone else with the same questions so it's great to see em all in one place... don't be shy!
If it's just a general question feel free to comment it here! If you want me to give you specific/personal feedback on your SoP, check out my patreon page! (Patreon.com/jakubtansey). Demand was too high for me to keep volunteering to help everyone the way I was before unfortunately.
I am not sure this applies to you, but if you know anyone who may be in the same situation as me, I’m curious! I’m a US citizen but I live overseas - on the website it says that I may have to return to the US for the interview, and it seems non negociable; but I’m wondering if (especially since they are doing online things now) they would do an online interview?
This year probably for the interview it wouldn't matter too much, but probably next year it will go back to in-person interviews, and regardless you'd probably still have to go to the US to depart with the rest of the JETs if you were accepted.
Was thinking - dang he cleaned up the house...NOPE! That green screen! 😂😂 These will help a lot. On a fb page I’m on, these questions are coming up over and over
Hi Jakub! Thank you for all of your information. Your videos have been a goldmine. I was wondering if you would be willing to take a look at my SOP? It's due on the 20th of November and I'm starting to panic a bit :)
I’m gonna have to bring up one manga when do my application after I get out of university because I was inspired to teach by the manga GTO Great Teacher Onizuka
How would you say it is adjusting to Japanese life? I’m from Glasgow and I’m a bit worried about drinking culture being different like do folk go to pubs and that at the weekend like we do haha? But otherwise I’m very tempted to apply for when I finish uni
Haha don't worry people still get lit in Japan 🤪 There's even 'nomihodai' in many places which is all-you-can-drink... Dangerous for us Scott's 😂 For me it was easy to adjust because I'm in a very urban area so there are many other foreign ALTs I'm friends with and spend most of my free time with. I can't speak for rural Japan but it's all good in the cities. Only thing I'd say is that the clubs are shit and expensive, but I have friends who like them.
I suppose it would depend on the specific surgery and how they feel any resulting effects from it could impact/be an issue with living in Japan. But I think for the most part it won't make much difference.
Absolutely not! You don't need to speak any Japanese to apply for JET. However, I think attempting to learn looks very good on the application. Showing effort to learn is more important than any kind of actual level of Japanese in my opinion. So I would recommend taking a beginner class or try and reach yourself a little, even if it's just to talk about when you apply. Certainly once I arrived here I lost any motivation to keep studying lol..
Thanks for the vid! been watching a few of your videos, which are so great, to get into the right mindset ! I was just wondering if there was a template of the personal statement because I'm unsure of how formal it's going to be.
I mean appart from the guidelines on the JET website about what to include, I don't really know about a template. I'd say the language should be formal, but the structure is more flexible. It's very short so start be trying to nail one solid paragraph for each of the 'questions' JET asks you to answer in it. Hope that helps!

No she's real 😂 The mess is just contained to behind the camera lol!
“Don’t mention anime unless you want to become an animator for example” Me with my bachelor’s degree in animation…. Hehehehehehe
Love that for you hehe!

Hello how strict is the JET with your previous medical history say surgery. Will that hurt my chances? Thanks.
I suppose it would depend on the specific surgery and how they feel any resulting effects from it could impact/be an issue with living in Japan. But I think for the most part it won't make much difference.
Is learning japanese a must?? Like.. did everyone they hire speak japanese, even novicely?

great tips ! SoP is so scary to write I have no idea what to write lol
Aha yeah it's always daunting in the beginning! Each draft will become clearer though 😉
Hello, I loved your video. I was wondering if any bachelor's degree would work for the jet program even if it has nothing to do with teaching?
Yupp! My degree was 'digital media' haha.
Thank you so much I really appreciate it.
No problem 😁
Since I'm about to get mine in agricultural science.
our application is still physical documents
Oh dang! Where are you applying from?

Does grade of uni have a huge impact?
I can't speak for JET of course, but I really don't believe it does.
I mentioned anime in my SOP and got to the interview round twice.
I'm not saying if they see the word anime, they'll immediately throw out your application haha. I just don't think it does you any favours is all.
