    Girl! My husband and I have been "poor" for many years now but we do appreciate the finer foods! Everytime we we gave gone to a higher level restaurant and we have fallen in love with a certain dish.... we have learned how to make it from home!

      My parents started doing this when they lived in New Orleans as newlyweds, using a Brendan's Restaurant cookbook. I have learned many of the fine-tuned recipes!

    Jess, there's something called Blackberry winter around Easter. It will be real winter temperatures! I lived in South Carolina and now Georgia it's a real thing. My grandpa was a sharecropper he always told us not to put away the coat's until after blackberry winter.

    I love your pepper variety! Last year I had a random shishito plant come up variegated, so I made sure to save seeds from it - I sent some of the seeds to your PO box (along with a few photos of the plant) so be on the lookout for those! 😊 I’m hoping that the variegated mutation will carry on through the seeds, and I thought you might want to try growing some of them. I’ll be growing out a few of the seeds myself too. Happy gardening! 😊

    I purposely watched this video to see if you would mention these wonderful mythical peppers that you blister and absolutely love and now I am laughing to the point of tears. Because the last time you mentioned these peppers, I went to the store and bought them to try.... I thought you said SERRANO peppers! So here I am. Super excited for dinner. Doing my happy dance to try something new. With 100% confidence, because my UA-cam best friend that I trust completely told me they're not spicy, put the whole pepper in my mouth. I pretty much died. And I was so like JESS IS CRAZY! SHE LIED TO ME! I FEEL BETRAYED. (Entirely too dramatic.) And then you say SHISHITO and I was like SHISHITO PEPPERS!!!!!!! NOT SERRANO!!!!! Yup. Maybe I should make sure I'm buying the right thing before eating the entire pepper in one bite.

    Just a word of warning, come summer time, never shut those greenhouse doors, in fact padlock them open. If a little child got stuck in there (playing hide and seek, got trapped, etc) they could die like being trapped in a hot car in summer time. I have one, and I have little children, so this is always on my mind.

    This is the time of year that I find myself really yearning for watching your and others’ videos because I am getting so excited for the growing season…..but we have lows down to 3F in the forecast this week 😅 getting to see so many folks sitting out in their greenhouses is helping to hold me over!

    The arroz con pollo pepper is SUCH a staple for our Cuban food, and so many other Latino dishes. My aunts and grandma also use it as a garnish for our arroz con pollo. You can usually see the peppers used to spell out things or make designs like suns or palm trees on top of the big rice dish :)

    You’re not alone with the ‘random’ allergic reactions! So frustrating and I hope it gives you hope to know as I’ve cut the more severe allergens out of my life, the lesser allergens (things that I inly sometimes react to) are less of a problem. You’ve got this!!

      Yes same here with allergic reactions. It's been interesting though since I got covid I now have allergic reactions to the most random thing... Styrofoam! I mean I'm 41 yrs old & didn't realize how many things come in Styrofoam! Now I get skin break out, breathing issues & have to take a benadryl quick.

    Jess, some encouragement for you (coming from a girl with wild allergies too), allergies change every 7 years. My allergist has all is pts feeding their gut to keep your immune system from overreacting. Love ya, girl 💜 keep up the good work!

    Where I live in Oregon (8b), I put my tomatoes and peppers out right after the last frost, and then we got a hard freeze and SNOW at the end of April. I was told as a rule of thumb in my area to not put peppers or tomatoes out until after Mother's Day.

    My lord don't stop talking for since you moved onto this land you have not only inspired me to make a bit of a garden but you suggest so many different things that I get seed for and grow. This year I am going to put my over grow at the end of my driveway and nudge people to take it for free with all the info of what it is and what to look for when they go to buy their own and grow the next season. I love your "talks" !!!

    Hey Jess, former esthetician/medical assistant/nursing student here. Consider trying to find a place that does eyebrow threading next time and give that a try if you think waxing might cause swelling again. Personally, I much prefer threading to waxing anything on my own face, even though eyebrow waxing was by far my specialty back when I worked in the spa.

    I checked on my seedlings today that I have started in my basement. I planted on February 15th. I didn't expect anything to be pushing up through the soil yet (didn't plant too deep) because it's only been 4 days. "I was wrong. I' have half a dozen beefsteak tomatoes, some yellow squash, and half dozen cabbage. Thought of you Jess and said "happy birthday" to the little seedling babies :)

      I planted broccoli, cauliflower and purple and green cabbages last Sun and was shocked when they sprouted just a few days later! I also planted a bunch of peppers and two finally popped up today. I was getting worried! I have mine on warming mats but it's still taking the peppers a while. I don't mind as long as they grow.

My last frost date where I live here in Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador) zone 5b is probably second or third week in June so it scares me to try and grow peppers here!

      I am in PEI (5b) and have done great for cayennes and carmen sweet peppers I don't plant out until July and they produce into Sept really well. I do start them 12 weeks or so before I plan on planting out. If you are nervous try small med heat hot peppers first. They produce faster and more plentiful.

    In regards to freezing capsicums (peppers) what we did growing up is bbq them untill they are cooked through and the skin is blackhead, then peel & deseed them then freeze. They do hold their texture and firmness and dont break down. They do freeze well.
    I just bbq'd some a few days ago and mixed in fresh garlic, salt and a little olive oil and.. wow such a nice side dish, sandwiches or whatever you heart desires, ❤️
    Just so you know I live in Perth, Western Australia. Our zone here is 11 and I still have at least another 10- weeks of growing left maybe more. today we have a 39* forcast. I have just found a nice juicy rock melon ready to eat & enjoy with my granddaughter later.

    Here in Australia our ceiling fans have a summer and a winter setting. The winter setting helps bring the hot air down from the ceiling, the summer mode helps make it rise…

    Excellent video Jess. Thank you for the tip on the peppers... I feel the same about a lot of the "how many to plant" charts. Sure they are maybe a starting point but should not be considered gospel. I use the rule of "some" and "a few" and if I don't get what I want this year, I plant "a few more" and if they produce too much, I plant "a few less". Each year is a response to the previous year and what was consumed over the winter.

    Hiya Jess. Having just left a home of 6 years and spent all my time conditioning the soil and sister planting everything due to the small size of the garden. Planting in pest control flowers and ones that I could cut and drop as feed too, I find myself in a brand new build in the UK and they've told me I'm not allowed to touch the ground for a year... A year?! 😮 That's like cutting my arms off and telling my heart to stop wanting to grow our own food...
    I just want to let you know, I have followed you for years now and I have been present whilst you went through your waiting classrooms stages too... You are keeping me going and by continuing to watch you grow, I am taking inspiration that my time will come again.
    I have only 8 X 500/500mm raised planters I moved with us and 10 large black plastic 50l pots. At least 80 ceramic pots with all the plants I could take with me. This year I will still grow in those but have to be so mindful of what I put where to yield as much I can in what I have available before I break ground.
    Thank you for keeping me inspired. Thank you for keeping spirits up. This year will be a prepping stage for sure and to turn my thoughts into naturally fertilising the soil all over again. Luckily I also shifted around 3 ton of soil with me, so my aim is to keep that as healthy as I can for a year, so I can use it when I'm allowed to dig and break ground.
    It's going to be a hard one, but a hugely learning one. I got your book even though I've been gardening for years, we are always learning ❣️

    Love your greenhouse it's literally my dream 😍. I had just a little greenhouse that came in a kit. Used it the past 2 seasons and this winter it was smashed by a tree that fell 😭😭 unfortunately I just have no extra funds to work with to get one for spring. It's made my gardening Spirits crushed and depressing. But as most of our food is grown here on our property. I can't give up hope just praying for a Miracle to get us through this season.
    Your videos inspire me deeply and I love watching them don't take your Greenhouse for granted cherish every moment you spend in it you are blessed to have what you have.
    I just keep trying to remind myself. My gardening challenges only gain wisdom so in the end nothing's lost.❤💕

    We dry our Tabasco peppers whole and keep them in a jar on the counter. One dried pepper in a big batch of broth gives the broth a perfect peppery flavor!

    Risk of frost until mid / end of May here! Watching videos of others starting seeds and planning helps pass the time until my zone 5 area is ready for planting! I'd love to build a little greenhouse to begin the growing season a little sooner. My South facing window has already become a mini grow spot for starting a few indoor veggie seeds while my heart's holding on for the warmer weather.

    I used to have sporadic but horrible eyelid problems (swollen, flaky, red) back in highschool to my 20's. I eventually figured out for myself that it correlated with using nail polish. I quit doing that and started gardening so I gave up on long nails.

    I had 32 pepper plants this past year for the two of us! I used them for eating during the season . The rest I used in pepper jelly, salsa, and froze the rest in various ways for the winter.

    I also had some amazing little peppers at a pizza place (Catch-A-Fire Pizza). They had them stuffed with goat cheese and roasted. They were mildly hot Peppadew peppers, which are a trademarked pepper. I learned these are often pickled and are most popular that way. After some research, I found the Malawi Piquante pepper which is supposed to be the same thing and ordered seeds from the Hippie Seed Company in Australia. They have many fun varieties. I will try growing these this year and see how they turn out.

    Totally agree with the pepper planting strategy. In Zone 5b I start them a week or two before the tomatoes and plant them out at least 2 weeks after the tomatoes, depending on the weather forecast. Peppers hate cold weather when they are getting started. Learned my lesson like Jess did through trial and error and doing a little more research. Listen to Jess.

    I had to laugh at the "how much to plant" question. When we lived in GA, 8 butternut squash plants made about 16 squash. But in AL, 8 butternut squash plants made 4 wheelbarrows full I gave away, another 2 wheelbarrows full I've fed to the pig and chickens and I still have 2 wheelbarrows full that we're still trying to use up after the wheelbarrow full we've already used. Same growing zone, totally different soil, and a rainy summer vs usually dry summers. 2 Kentucky pole bean plants made enough for us to eat fresh in GA and 2 more gave enough to can for the rest of the year. In AL, a 35 ft row of multiple plants barely gave enough for fresh eating the first year and the same number of plants the second year gave enough to can and freeze for 2 years plus eat fresh the whole growing season. :-) Only difference those two years was the amount of rain we got and when we got that rain. :-)

    I just started watching this video, but as one who has lived in SC for over 50 years, don't be fooled by the warm February because many times I have seen March be colder than February. Heck even early April can bring on a surprise freeze, and I'm down here in Charleston.

I don't know where the video is now but I got both of them and also found one called 'The prairie homestead cookbook' and thought I'd recommend it to you. I can't wait for it to come!     Your seed picks for peppers are many of what I grow - thanks to YOU we love them all! My pepper crop was AMAZING last year and this is what I am mostly so excited about. My grandson loves to just pick peppers and tomatoes and eat them standing in the garden - reminds me of Ben! Many of your tomato picks are what I grow and last year was not great tomato crop but I def had enough to eat, freeze and give to neighbors and family. For the hot temp. problem I am going to plan a sunflower row to give them shade or grow them close to my hydrangea bushes. Thanks for your enthusiasm about gardening it helps me get motivated even if I have to wait a little longer then you!

    I'm actually getting ready to separate my peppers since they have gotten their true leaves. I started them a little earlier than normal this year as I usually start them when I start my tomatoes and they seem so small when I put them into the garden. Thanks for the advice on putting them into the garden a few weeks later than your tomatoes. I noticed last year it took forever for them to really start growing. Hope to have a bumper crop this year!

    I’m a retired dentist and if the aesthetician did your brows the latex of the gloves along with the plucking probably may have caused the swelling. Nítrele gloves will solve it. The other thing is the enzymes in saliva could help with opening the seeds.
    Shishito peppers are best!!!!

    I can't find my comment now or remember the video I made it on, but I asked for help in Jess's comment section with a chicken question a while back, and after months of waiting for our first eggs we just got our second egg today!! So exciting!! Thank you to the person who recommended that we get some older hens that are already laying, it did seem to jumpstart something hormonally or something like that!

    Lovely baby-seedlings ! My flower seedlings are coming up today after planting them 3-4 days ago which is exciting. I will really be excited when my Paul Robeson tomato and other awesome vegetables sprout ! Kudos seed-starting mamma .

    I tried overwintering peppers, in the ground this year. A cayenne, a jalapeno and 1/2 dozen bells. The parts sticking out of the mound of straw are not looking great, but hopefully the parts protected are happy. We'll see soon enough! I live on Cape Cod and haven't had much success with peppers before, but I let them "hold hands" last year. 😉 I also laid small pieces of slate on the soil around the plants until the nights were consistently warm, and that seemed to help. :)

    Check out the Jigsaw pepper from baker creek. The peppers emerge dark purple and turn red. The plant itself is STUNNING with purple and green variegated leaves and the purple and red fruits. I’m putting them all through my front bed for ornamental purposes this year.

    We are experiencing a fool’s spring here in upstate NY. It has been beautiful in the 40s, but expected to get back to 10-single digits overnight this weekend. The Irises, Allium and Crocus don’t care though and are already peeking out!

    Thank you for this video! Today, we had a -36 with wind chill day. We spent the day outside by the fire, skating. It was nice, but february is always to me a very hard and long month. Starting my peppers and celery are always giving me a little hope, haha. Here there is no way we can have an abundance of peppers outside, gonna try to have them geow in the greenhouse and see how it goes!

    We had over 40 volunteer Shishitos last year. Up some, from the single plant grown the year before. lol Way more than we could eat fresh. We send a good bit of our veggies to family, but that was still A LOT.
    Ended up pickling many of them in the oil type USDA marinated peppers recipe. Except I didn't add the oil to the jars, I used it to blister the peppers. Then instead of the one part bottled lemon juice to two parts vinegar, I used two parts bottled 100% lime juice to one part ACV. Left out the oregano and horseradish. (This more than meets technical safety acidity. Anyone wanting to try this could also just refrigerate them, if concerned about the recipe deviations.)
    Those have been fantastic this winter! It was thanks to your recipe last year that we knew what to do with most of the haul, in the first place. It also gave me the idea to try having a bit of that flavor profile from deep summer, in winter. :) I'm totally still on a small red pepper growing trialing quest. To find the ones I loved stuffed with cream cheese, black pepper and garlic in England. Not exactly hot but so much flavor from those peppers. In the meantime, we've discovered some really good peppers!

    Those sweet cherry peppers are so good! Pickle them and then stuff them with a cheese mixture and serve as an app they’re so delicious!
