I shoot film cause I like the analog process, I self develop my films from 135 to 8x10 and make prints on an enlarger… it’s like a craftsman experience, all process by hands, and it’s why I like it. Yes digital is better, cheaper on the long run etc. But I don’t like passing my time behind a screen

Hi Zach, really enjoy your videos. I have to do a lot of food photography and I've found getting into film, mainly as a hobby and for personal creative photography but also for some supplementary food photos has really helped re-engage my passion for photography in general and I think its making me better overall (making me take more time and be more thoughtful in a way thats is helping my digital photography too). I think the two compliment each other. Can I ask how you are finding the 606 LUTS? I do some video work too and I'm tempered by them, although I got Erics preset pack too and I found actually that defiant really suit my style

The feeling of getting the correct exposure on film is so damn rewarding, especially if you develop and scan all of your stuff yourself. It's the ultimate feeling of accomplishment in terms of photography, for me at least, but I also completely love and adore digital. I do low light concerts, events, etc, so I would rather be 100% confident in my camera and lenses than second-guessing every time I'm ready to shot the shutter. I love film but like you said it's not the holier than thou creative route some online people make it out to be. I think film photography is sadly in a bubble and with Kodak rising their prices, that bubble is getting closer and closer to bursting. There are other alternative stocks out there, for sure, and we should use those by all means, but when this bubble does sadly burst, the ripple effect will be felt through the whole medium. Digital is just safer and in a roundabout way, cheaper, than film photography.

I'm surprised I can't tell the difference. I thought the digital images would look much better but they didn't. So my thoughts now are - How good is film! Go figure right! I grew up through the seventies and onwards on film and changed to digital when the Nikon D700 came out. Here's the thing, they're just different that's all. When digital came out I thought, Thank God for digital - no more dark room chemicals! Hallelujah! But I still shoot film because I can scan the negs and make digital prints. Why. I just like it, that's all. Why? I don't know and I dont care. I just do. What else is there to know? You don't need a reason and you don't need to justify your art. I love Julia Margaret Cameron's portraits. Not technically sharp or great tonal range blah blah blah but man are they beautiful.

Question - what do I need to buy to get the photos off the film and into my computer? Sorry about this amateur question. I have a Canon A1 i’d love to get back out. Thanks!

It's like the vinyl versus digital debate. Digital presents us with accuracy so going with older analogue solutions is in effect saying you spurn accuracy and want something different. This can be great but let's not pretend that these older mediums are as accurate. With digital there is also the endless possibility to edit as you see fit. Many are trying create film colours and effects because they love them but it does not occur to some that they are effectively existing in a world of nostalgia-driven, feel-good cosiness that isn't accurate. Is it just escapism from the immediacy of the often harsh world we live in?

    Hey Zach.
Due to my age (unfortunately :)) I know very good what film is/was and what slides are/were, as I spent with them most of my photography life. I know also how things were in the first years of digital (still remember my first digital Olympus E-10 with those terrible 4 MP, which at that early years was only a new strange game for corious people who had money to spend, while film and slides were the only ways to keep on making real photos). In this long trasition era the young youtubers like you were little kids or not even born. But all those happened many many years ago and today things have changed a lot. So now I can say that in IMHO shooting film in 2023 has no meaning at all.
No need to mention that any ways, in all cases, (except of some B&W pictures that people are still producing in the darkroom and develop them with real chemicals) todays film photos are not real film photos, as all of them are scanned and end up in Lightroom for digital proccessing, something that makes them much less film pictures, as lot of people like to think.
I do not use presets so often but I tried some of them and it seems that with some good work someone can give to digital photos a plethora of characters that the many different films had at their time. So going back to film is just nostalgia for something that is forever lost. Not a bad thing ofcourse to be nostalgic, but that is only for personal joy and not for real results.
Last but not least, regarding the compare, it can not be seen in youtube but only in printed photos side by side on a good screen, provided that someone gives to the viewers the real high resolution files.
I do not blame you though. Just saying. And to be honest I am a bit nostalgic sometimes and that is why I still have my Nikons F2AS, F3 & F4 with many lenses, my Contax G2 with their holy trinity lenses and my Contax RTS II with it's wonterfull Zeiss Lences. I do not use them any more. But from time to time I take them out and play with them. I even care that the F3 has always a full battery in, which makes the shutter work (with out battery in can still shoot, but only with one shutter speed (for emergencies) activated from the depth of field lever LOL.

It's the same nostalgic debate in every creative bubble. I'm a guitar player and analogue tube amps are all the rage (buzzwords: tube saturation, feel, blabla). I own a tube amp myself and love it. But it's just too loud to use it live on stage or at rehearsals. So instead I'm using a digital modeling device that get's me 95% of the way there. And I can fit it in my rucksack, instead of lugging around 25 kilos of equipment. In the end it's about the end result: do the people listening to the music hear the difference? No. Do people see a difference between your film and digital photos Zach? I could not. Both mediums are valid and should be used by whoever enjoys them. But in 2023 it doesnt make sense to argue wether one is better than the other. Both are great.

No chance that I ever get back to film, except of black & white medium format with a Hasselblad, paired with darkroom work.
When digital started I hated the look, but digital got so good with the first Canon 5d etc. that I don‘t see the point of using film. It was alway not sharp enough, grainy, colors often sucked and btw expensive.
But good that the younger generation keeps film alive, sees the charm of film, and enjoys the process.

I think that the film renaissance is starting to decline, I am noticing less emphasis by you tubers on film photography, most of them are now discussing digital photography. The cost of color film has now exceeded what most can or will pay. I personally shoot digital full frame for color. I still shoot color medium format and large format film as the there is more of an
advantage. I also shoot black and white in 35mm, medium format and large format. I personally don’t see any advantage to shooting color 35mm film, the cost of film, a long time to scan 24 to 36 frames and I only print black and white in the darkroom.
