Interesting to see the spray rinse on the first spin, I thought that was a thing for the older machines.
    Great video as always!

This is just like my childhood washing machine I first learned to do laundry on.

The messed up thing is when people toss these out, it is usually because they need something minor like a timer or agitator dogs. These machines are very easy to work on. If I had one, I would hold onto it because newer machines are JUNK (except for speed queens which are VERY expensive).

Just had to replace the drive block and basket drive tube tonight on mine along with the agitator dogs…made sense to me since had machine apart to do a super deep clean of the inner and outer tubs along with replace the clutch and brake pads
16 year old machine and I plan on keeping it until the tub rots out.

My Aunt has a Speed Queen TR7 in black and she loves it. You could find one of the used (if you’re lucky enough…) because this is actually a rare model.

Whirlpool actually made an HE direct drive for their laundry centers for a bit. They’ve since discontinued it but they did manufacture a direct drive with a high efficiency agitator, soil level selector, deep water wash, and auto load sensing very much like a VMW machine. Those were made until like 2017. It was definitely a direct drive let’s just say that. It had mechanical controls, and the same balance ring. And it probably has the same parts and motor. So Whirlpool made direct drives for longer than you thought. I think the commercial direct drives were made until 2015. It probably used less water than the old school direct drive too. But just like the VMW machines, it had deep water wash option.

2008 really wasn't that long ago. I wonder if there are any of these sitting new in a warehouse anywhere? I guess it's possible.

    • @DylBuilder1

That is a possibility. There’s a speed queen 9 series dryer near me that was never opened for 2016 so very possible.

The wash spray rinse is something I have never seen before either. It is something I always thought would be very beneficial. I'm sure someone familiar with microcontrollers would be able to add that kind of mod to another machine. I can imagine how it could work, but that's something I never got into. Then again, do you _really_ want to computerize an already purely mechanical machine? That being said, it would be VERY easy to implement a manual wash spray rinse with a pushbutton.
Otherwise, although the controls panel looks different from my 2009 machine, I can tell just by the sound of it that it's the same internals. Same thunka-thunka-thunka of the transmission; hard to explain but there are fine differences in how these machines sound over the years. This particular era happens to have a noisier-than-normal transmission, yet still not very loud at all.

It seems like ever Whirlpool discontinued these machines, washer and other appliances have tanked in quality since 2011. Oh well, at least I have something from the golden age of appliances that’s still running.
