- Hey guys, sharing some thoughts on this Suhr Modern Antique and Tom Anderson Guardian Angel guitar. Both amazing guitar. I no longer have either. I only had 2 days with the Anderson, but it was enough to make my decision. I ordered another Anderson with slightly different specs. Should have it February. Be on the lookout for that video.

Tom Anderson and John Suhr are good friends. Both are great guitars. Andersons tend to be more expensive because they are produced on a smaller scale.

Such, such good builders. I have both. 3 Suhrs and 2 Andersons. I doubt I'll part with any of them. Part of the trouble of having GAS is it's really kind of an addiction. Now I'm mesmerized by James Tyler guitars. EVEN MORE expensive lol. That said, I played one for the first time the other day and my jaw was literally on the floor. Could not believe how well it played. I didn't think it was possible for a solid body electric to feel much more solid than Suhr and Anderson, but damn. The Tyler I played might just be. (to be noted we are MAJORLY splitting hairs at this level. All wonderful guitars built by guys who a truly dedicated to the craft).
Such great guitars. I personally prefer the Anderson, but it really doesn't matter too much. Honestly, one reason I fell in love with Anderson is because the first time I started looking into this stuff I emailed them with some questions and Tom himself replied. Not only did he reply, but he spent way more time on his responses than anyone could reasonably expect or even hope. That little extra touch, while totally unnecessary, made me a fan for life. :)

Nice review - both great companies. I learned about Suhr just before Tom Anderson and now I love both. You really can’t go wrong with either one.
I have 19 guitars in my collection (and include models from Anderson, Suhr, PRS, Gibson, Heritage, Ernie Ball Music Man, Fender, Warmoth, Alvarez Yairi, and others). I've got 5 guitars made by Tom Anderson, and one from Suhr. A few months ago, I did the Pepsi challenge by comparing my guitars to see which ones I like the most. Each guitar was evaluated with clean, crunch rhythm, and paint peeler lead sounds. My favorite one: Ernie Ball Music Man Steve Lukather L3. Second place was a 1997 Tom Anderson Cobra. If my house was on fire, those two would be the first ones I'd rescue.

Awesome comparison! RIP to both of those beauties, but looking forward to seeing the new one. The Guardian Angel has been evading me forever, but some day I'll get my hands on one.

Great video Tony,I haven’t played either but a local shop had a 2020 Gorgeous Anderson Honey Wake Drop Top, I wanted to try ,by the time I got there in the afternoon it was gone, only took less than. day and for $3k , it was a great deal , but you snooze you lose out , your videos are always enjoyable 👍
Every guitar is going to have its sweet spot, even from the same brand. I have a couple of Suhr’s. I have a burl wood custom T, that sounds completely different than my Modern. The necks feel different due to the woods chosen. The custom T has thornbuckers, the modern the the HSH pickup setup. They both have their place, both ordered as 24 fret. Some days I’d rather play a Tele I bought 50 years ago as opposed to a PRS or Suhr. I’ve been buying guitars for over 50 years and playing marginally for decades :) The Suhr’s and the custom shop PRS are lovely guitars. I don’t suggest ordering one early on as you buy guitars, they cost twice what my first car did.... that way you’ll appreciate the craftsmanship over the usual big brand names if you decide to invest in one :) 🎸
I agree with you about the lower horn. I had a chance to try a Modern Satin and the cutaway is a dealbreaker for me unfortunately. It’s really a shame as I loved the neck profile on it. Some other guitars in Suhr’s catalog look like the access is a bit better so I will have to research some more. The TA cutaway looks much better it’s just too bad I no longer live near a dealer to try one. I tried a TA very briefly years ago but I don’t even remember the model, though I think it was pretty close to the traditional strat look. I’d love to go to NAMM and just try all of these cool brands out! Who wouldn’t right?
How long are your fingers? I also have long fingers (about 8.5” wrist to tip of middle finger). About to pull a trigger on suhr modern and am concerned about the lower horn issue. Unfortunately i dont have a suhr dealer near me so i cant try it out.
Though i play mostly with my thumb on the upper part of the neck (some parts of my thumb is almost always visible, even when playing shred stuff) so i think it may not be an issue, but who knows
My hand is 9” from wrist to tip of middle finger. The lower horn isn’t a deal breaker for me, just there in the way from time to time.... depending on how I’m playing.... Hand and knuckles hit it. I struggle a bit with the narrower neck. (1.650) at the nut. My finger bunch up at the higher frets... but something I could get used to. Suhr will make you a wider 1.685 (1 11/16) fretboard/neck. You’ll just have a wait around a year to get it. All I ever see is the narrower ones that come standard. The Tom Anderson had a wider 1 11/16 fretboard and wider lower horn. I much prefer that. It just depends on your playing style and preferences.
I've owned several Suhrs and Andersons. Both are exemplary. My main guitar is a Tom Anderson and I finally have a backup on the way that is identical except for finish. I could never gel with the Suhrs although they are great. FYI Tony-the mini toggle on the Anderson is likely a "blower switch" that will circumvent any toggle switch pickup setting and go direct to the bridge/lead pickup and to the output jack for solos. that way, could have say a "country" or funk setting on your pickups, flip the switch for a solo boost, then right back to the setting with minimal effort. Bot Suhr and Anderson are great choices, but I lean to Anderson because of the Feiten tuning system, neck profiles, and the Cobra short scale models.

My two cent have to agree with you opinions. The Suhr modern is an excellent sounding guitar. The lower horn 100% kills it. I had the same issue when I had a modern. My finger was always hitting and and I just couldn’t do it. IMO it’s a bad design that is a drawback for players whom arch their wrists right above the lower horn.
I’ve stuck with the classic s suhrs (mateus models) as the neck is much thicker and then swapped the bridge humbucker with a ssh+.👌🏼
For a 24 fret I got my self a usa charvel select. Super comfortable guitar. A little small on the neck but it plays effortlessly for shredding.
Does that lower horn make it uncomfortable to play high up? Does it get in the way? Does it make it more difficult in any way ?
@@thefam9179 The neck feels comfortable playing high up. The horn does get in the way when playing though. IF you have longer fingers its worse. if you tend to play with your wrist arched then you're going to hit the horn 100% of the time. The only way to prevent your fingers from hitting the horn is if you play without leaving space between your fingers and the neck (if your thumb rests hooked on backtop of the neck like a blues player style. If you are more of a technical player where you arch your wrist and have your thumb around the middle back of the neck then you'll hit the horn. I didn't care how great the neck felt or how good it sounded (sounded so good) my fingers hitting the horn was a deal breaker.

@@thefam9179 for me if it weren’t for the damn horn it would be the perfect guitar. It felt amazing. Sounded amazing. If you could try it out in person and see the lower horn bothers you that would be the best. It may or may not affect you.
@C J B actually proper technique when playing lead/shred lines is to arch your wrist. It provides more efficient and faster fingering. Just look at how the op does the technique when he’s playing up in the higher register, thus why he’s comparing about it as well. It has nothing to do with how large or small you hands are. It just means that your technique doesn’t have you arching your wrist and that your palms are closer The back of the neck, which is fine if that’s how you like to play. It’s the fact that the lower horn compared to other shred guitars (that have extra vertical access) doesn’t have a lot of vertical clearance. I personally like the way it looks. But on a functional standpoint for those that arch their wrist (proper shredding technique) it’s going to get in the way at least a little bit.
Beautiful guitars. My Suhr Standard is amazing. Tony - how is that Wilkenson trem on the Suhr? Is it locking? How does it compare to the Gotoh 510? How would you compare it to a Floyd? Thank you.
Thanks! Yes. The Wilkinson locking is basically like the Gotoh 510 but longer tremolo bar. Didn’t notice any difference in tone. Definitely holds tune better. No slipping on that end.
Feels nothing like a Floyd and most likely won’t be used like one. Therefore, holds up similarly timing wise

Hi Tony, have you had any problems with the Suhr’s locking saddles breaking strings a lot? I’ve got the same bridge and even though the tuning stability is fantastic, string breaks happen too frequently right at the contact point of the locking mechanism.
I haven’t had that problem. I don’t tighten them very tight. Just enough. Maybe just try and snug them up and if that works.
The Suhr is my dream guitar, if you are ever selling I'd be interested.
Have you tried or owned a Music Man Majesty? It seems like the Majesty would be the best as far as upper fret access and eliminating that lower horn problem. Of course the quality is excellent also. It is definitely a more modern guitar, whereas the Silhouette you played/reviewed recently is more modern/vintage. How would you compare it to those? MM necks are legendary.
I’ve played the Majesty’s,. The necks are way too small and I’m not a huge fan of the pickups or having a piezo. I love MM guitars, but like the Kiesel DC600 better for a neck through. I like the thicker necks on these best. I actually sent the TA back and am ordering a much thicker neck profile. Thanks for the comment.

If you have big hands like I do, it can be an issues.
How badly do you miss that Suhr? I have a satin modern Tele body and I’m never getting rid of it. The moment I laid my hands on it I connected with that guitar for all the reasons you said.
Not that badly. I did have a modern with the wider thicker neck. I miss that one.

I have never got a chance to try the angel but the suhr modern I played I thought was one of the best built guitars I had played. I know you have had many suhrs and I wanted to ask if you would hesitate about buying 1 from a dealer you couldn't play first before purchase?
I’ve loved every Suhr I’ve played. But, after playing them at home, I know precisely what specs I prefer. I could have kept any of them and been happy. Just check the specs, but I would if it lined up with my preferences
I had a drop top. I’ve owned about 6 Suhr and the TA was by far the best made of the bunch. The lines, binding and general attention to detail.
However!
I typically preferred the playability of all the Suhr I’ve owned. Better fitting necks for my hands and a bit more musical I’d say.
Yeah, it really depends on the guitar and particular specs. I have bigger hands and the only issues with the suhr modern is the lower horn being too close to the body. The right neck on the TA coupled with the right pickups fits me better than similar specs on the Suhr Modern. However, since doing this video, I've seen a couple of TA's where the string alignment was slightly off center. I have played more Suhr guitars and never seen that on any of them.Again, I guess it just depends on the particular instrument.
@@tonlarj37 I’ve always had exactly the same opinion on the lower horn. I think for a 24 fret guitar, it needs to have better accessibility in the higher register.
Only issue I had with my old TA drop top was unnecessary spring vibration. It was a hollow drop top, so weight relieved.
The springs chimed so badly I could hear it through the amp and had to put a load of cushioning around the springs.
Suhr Thronbucker pickup is my favourite. Sounds good into all amps. But i prefer the construction of Tom Anderson 🤷♂️
Tom has the Buzz tuning system and locking neck. Known Tom for 50 years too. Have drop-.top. At his factory in Feb. earlier this year too.
Wow ! Yeah his wedgie neck is the reason I'll never buy another brand of guitar ! And the buttery frets :) ahh love me a lil angel in wakesurf blue! lol

No problem. Yes. The Angel Player has better access and more comfortable playing at the higher frets. They come in different variations. So, if you’re used to Jackson’s, make sure to get the 1 11/16 nut width.
I love my Anderson too more than my suhrs
Will you be reviewing the new TA?
I shot a video reviewing it about a month ago, but haven’t had time to finish/edit and upload it. Since then, we had some unforeseen events occur and I had to sell it. Along with a few other guitars. Hopefully, I can later replace it with another. Such is life. It might seem a little weird to post the TA vid, now?

I’ve owned a couple of tom’s guitars. They are definitely buttery and play great but lack any kind of character. They are overpriced and the guy who works customer service is super pretentious. I went to purchase a third one and asked for a custom finish, because their finishes are lame. I also wanted a novel pick up/switching system…He said “we don’t do that” and hung up the phone. So I sold both my Tom Anderson’s and bought a Duesenburg and a custom shop tele. No regrets at all. One nice thing is that they still sell well, but I doubt that’ll be the case in the future. Gibson tried to sue them, and instead of doing what Paul did, they caved. Tom actually tried to close the shop cause Roy is a jerk and a megalomaniac. It’s too bad one guy can ruin one man’s genius creations. That stupid A on the headstock... so cringy - 90s dad crap. There’s like three guys in the shop who make magic. And Tom is amazing at quality control. He’s just gotta find somebody else to pick up the phone. If you have a young player with taste, you would be wise to listen and build something that will really catch peoples attention. Save your money and get something with vibe. Perfection is nice, but those guitars never got played in the studio... they seem to be about five years behind. The new raven is definitely an improvement for them, but come on. Long scale jazz master/mustang relics? What is this 2009? I had a friend call them blandersons. Don’t test them... wimps make wimpy guitars
Interesting. Sorry you had such a bad eperience. I've had the opposite experience with TA. I've been a professional musician and session player for 26 yrs. I play, and have recorded just about every style of music. Yeah.... I love 90's dad crap "A", too. ;) But, you said you got a Duesenburg and a CS Tele? That's like great grandpa crap. lol (Kidding... love those, too) I'm actually looking to add a Duesenburg Starplayer TV. In any case, anyone I've ever met that has dealt with TA, has had the same experience I've had. So, I guess to each his own. Also, TA's are played in almost every studio I've worked in over the years. So.... not sure where you're getting your info?
That said, I have played just about every brand out there and they all have guitars in their lineups that lack things I'd like... depending on the style of music/session I'm working on.
In my case, I've been looking for something specific along the lines of the TA Guardian Angel. I sent this one in the video back to where I got it and had TA build me a simular one to my particular specs. They delivered on time, and It was exactly what I was wanting for this particular style guitar. It's a shame no other Custom shop would build it for me. I dealt directly with Tom and was one of the best experience I've had in my career. Tom picked up the phone.... I know it's a small shop, but I don't know "Roy" So.... ?
BTW - All the other Custom shops are equally, or more expensive. Good thing I ordered mine just before all the current price hikes!
@@tonlarj37 Ignore that last comment about TA guitars. That guy is going around every video on UA-cam about TA guitars over the last week and posting the exact same copy and paste comment. I've seen that comment on about a dozen videos. It's just someone trying to harm TA's reputation for some reason.
