    Welcome to mountain railroading in the US! Your train here has roughly the equivalent of a class 66 and 3 class 37s, and is far longer than any UK freight train I've seen videos of. (Most UK freights look piddly in size to me.) Network Rail had an article recently about 'the longest freight train run in Britain', and the train sounded pretty routine for US standards. All that weight needs a lot of power and takes a long time to get moving or get stopped.
    The EMD F-7 was the most successful of the F-unit range, with over 3400 built between 1949 and 1953. They generated 1500 hp and were used for both passenger and freight services all across America. The EMD SD-40 is a newer heavier freight traffic loco, and over 1200 were built from 1966 to 1972. They generated 3,000 hp, so they are roughly equivalent to two of the F-7s.
    That is indeed a caboose, usually the domain of the conductor or, in older days, the brakeman. I believe the Independent Brake is only the set of brakes on the locomotive, and the Automatic Brake is the airbrake system that applies across the whole train. Normally you would have a conductor (and possibly brakeman) to uncouple cars, set handbrakes and switches, and tell the engineer when/how far to clear switches and so on. They do indeed often ride on the back/front of trains for this to save lots of walking.
    I would be interested in seeing more of this. (You are a little rough on coupling up though, that was an awfully fast final approach. That caboose really would have jumped.)

      Thanks for the info! And may or may not have ridden with the brakes dragging too. Forgot to set the rotair to freight. :(

      @@GrandT No worries! I'm not much use in the cab either, but I have ridden on a very similar F-9 at the local museum. They are big beasts, they look good and make a lot of noise.
      Edit: They have got really nice F-7s at the museums in Frisco and Galveston TX if you ever get the chance.

    33:30 that right there is how and why I'd love multiplayer to be implemented, on a player hosted side, so a couple of you can work a train together, one engineer driving and one conductor taking care of points, coupling etc

      I honestly thought that was coming when they first announced TSW. Perhaps one day.

      @@GrandT It was, I have the video where Matt P said, "Absolutely, TSW will have multiplayer", then the old community manager tried claiming it was never part of the plan, only a wishlist item, (he was let go a month or 2 later, now it is back on the roadmap, but way down the bottom and won't be looked at until Steam locos are released and any associated bugs are ironed out.

    hey Grand, the reason the last few cars were still moving at 25:28 is the slack in the train. in a freight train this long, you get a few inches of slack between the couplers of each car. multiply that by 60-70 cars, and you have several feet of slack that the cars will slide forward even after the front of the train is stopped.

      I was wondering if that was the case. Thanks!

    I believe the outside of steam engine driving wheels were called tires, not sure about modern trains

    So, I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying the brakes are terrible... They work completely fine for me. (You have to remember to put the brake mode from Lapped Freight to Freight) Lapped mode is only for trailing units.

    • @GrandT
      @GrandT  3 роки тому

      I'm used to driving commuter EMU/DMUs, so that's why the brakes are noticeable. They're probably just fine for freight, and when setup correctly.

  • @TheRobo
    @TheRobo 3 роки тому

    Also I think part of the power problem also has to do with the brakes. Your brake cylinder (The BC value on the HUD next to the speedo) was showing pressure in it even when released, aka your loco brake was still applied.

    • @GrandT
      @GrandT  3 роки тому

      I did indeed forget to switch it to Freight on the rotair valve, which caused the brakes to drag. However, when I tested the scenario I had it setup correctly and still had power troubles with that incline.

      Mainly because of covid since they can't send a team to research and record a route. So by doing routes that had already been researched previously for ts21 it solves that problem for now

    Do the tutorial again...
    You didn't fully set up the brakes, they were dragging. Also, leave it on auto and leave the lever on series/parallel.

    • @GrandT
      @GrandT  3 роки тому

      The level to set it to freight, frieght lap etc didn't have any noticeable effect. Although I did forget to switch it here the same happens with freight setting.
      Unless there's something else?

    • @anthonypecoraro5472
      @anthonypecoraro5472 3 роки тому

      @@GrandT You need to set the rotair valve to freight, then cut in the brake stand. Your brakes were dragging the whole time.

    • @GrandT
      @GrandT  3 роки тому

      Perhaps I should reset the Loco next time. It's partially setup in these mid timetable runs, so a little disorienting.
      Is the order the key? I did run this once with the rotair set to freight. Might need to double check the tutorial. Only ran it once. Time was limited.

    • @GrandT
      @GrandT  3 роки тому +2

      Well, ran it again and it was indeed a simple case of switching the rotair valve. The cut-in was already set. That's the problem with running the same scenario back-to-back - in my mind I'd already set the rotair :(
      On the plus side, I know to keep an eye on the BC gauge. Thanks for pointing it out!

    Can you help? The CRR Extra 3016 Southbound coal starts Elkhorn city on a 1.5% (not metric measurement) grade incline. I can't get the train moving forward. 4,772.3 Tons. After several attempts using sand and different throttle settings the train rolls backwards down the incline.

      @@damongrimes2094 Ok I couldn't find CRR Extra 3016, but CRR Extra 3012 seems to match what you're experiencing. 4.872.9t with a 1.5% grade start at Elkhorn. I managed to get it moving, but it took some doing.
