Fun fact: Warner brothers found out that buying an actual 747 and crashing it into a hangar was cheaper than using CGI edit: lol idk how this comment got 100 likes :)
I kind of doubt it was cheaper than CG unless it was scrap. "the average price for a pre-owned BOEING 747-400 is $16,000,000.00" plus cost of the building you're destroying, rigging up the pyro, fire and film crew, insurance, etc. There's no way just that crash would have cost more to do with CG or miniatures. Basically all you're saving is the cost of building 1 or 2 plane models and a model building. Everything else is the same but at much smaller scale and fewer crew. The rest could have been done by taxiing a rented aircraft or miniature and adding a few digital effects.
It's definitely more fun crashing a real plane than using CGI! And when you think about it........they bought the plane for scrap value and sold it for scrap value.....so it probably cost them next to nothing to crash the plane.
There is a 70s movie called "Airport ’75" where a flight attendant tries to fly a 747 after the captain and fo are incapacitated (w. Charlton Heston and Karen Black),maybe you could review it ,would be fun
Yup, that's a pretty good movie, but very '70s. There's a scene in it in which Heston enters the 747 mid-flight by dangling on a cable attached to another plane. It'll be fun to see Kelsey try to explain that scene!
That’s because the plane was being towed for the scene, and the towing apparatus was edited out. For safety reasons, the plane engines were not used during this scene.
I think it is active possible for the engine to runaway: fuel leak. Remember it has presumably just ingested several metres of chain link car park fence, a few door mirrors and a tree. Surely if oil was getting into the burner cans then the engine would accelerate (and then the turbines would coke themselves into oblivion destroy the balance and screw the engine abruptly and completely)
I have literally no use for the information I learn in your videos, however, I thoroughly enjoy learning everything you teach us in these shorts you make! Thank you lol

@@74gear Thank you very much for your answer. 😀 So then yes... it would be very stupid to get to the gold like this. 🙈 P.S. Another movie with a lot of 747-Hollywood-things going on is "Turbulence" from 1997, starring Ray Liotta.

I recently found many hours of VHS tapes of him flying the 747 that he recorded when portable cameras were rather huge. I'm thinking about posting this footage. Any suggestions?
What's really funny is that while watching Tenet, I immediately thought of you and previous discussions that you would had in regards to the fact that all of the Freight in the back is strapped down to those channels in between so that nothing moves back and forth and when they're showing you that section I'm immediately looking for that knowing about that and of course now when I watch any movie with any airplane I'm immediately watching to see whether or not there's any fuel in the wing any fuel in the engine and whether or not there's going to be any type of an explosion simply because of the fact that you point that out so much
@@74gearhi you’re my favorite UA-camr and you got me into aviation now I’m gonna be a pilot (747 would be great but probably not) I hope to fly a 747, 777, 787, A350, or A380! I know you won’t respond to this but thank you so much for the inspiration!!
9:58 That gold weighs about 20 tons per stack... (40,000 pounds)... Secured by this net. And he is definitly not pushing them out like that. 60 tons... That is about a M1 Abrams... By the way, it is crazy, that this "little bit" (meaning volume) of gold is about half of the payload...
You didn't mention the wrong landing gear doors that are half way open (seen while the plane is "taxiing") or the fact that the hangar has a gate that conveniently hits the wing to justify some of the fire, it looks more like a mini-terminal to me. Love your channel.
I doubt they even used a "converted" freighter, instead, they probably just purchased an old 747-400 and yanked out all of the pieces in the lower deck cabin so it looks like a cargo version to the untrained eye. The big crash scene looks like it was done by towing the aircraft into a building with a winch -- notice how a part of the nose gear is always out of frame.
It is a 747-200 converted freighter, they removed thee PDUs and roller trays from the main deck and added a lot more lighting, but you can tell it is a freighter.
When an airplane is under tow, the steering is locked out to prevent damage to the airplane. They had to use engine power to break away from the towbar so the tiller would steer the aircraft.
You are making me motivated to fly when I watch your videos - It's too relaxing and so much fun! I can watch them all day. Keep up the awesome work you are doing.
It's amazing how UA-cam works, never been big into planes as the pressure makes my ears hurt like fire but anyway I came across one of your videos and it sparked my interest. So after watching like 30 of your videos I have much more of a fascination with planes.... Especially how they turn
I guess they turned the stairs and filmed from the 'other' door to accommodate the camera equipment... if the stairs were right at the L1 door it would have made for some awkward filming. Turning the stairs gives more room for the equipment and the scene and also maybe lets them follow characters upstairs more easily.
You have a great face for aviator sunglasses. I think they look cool, but not on me unfortunately 😂 love your insight on Hollywood movies, keep em coming 👍
Kelsey I really enjoy your channel. Your analysis is always so precise. I flew the 744 with a UK airline until retiring so I find all this uber-fascinating!
When I was a kid, I lived near Boeing in Everett. My bus route on my way home from school always took us past the factory. If the doors were open, you could see the planes as they were being constructed. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!
I visited the Everett factory as a kid. Huge building. Cool place to visit as a kid, seeing where the big jets are made. You grew up in a nice area. Love the Pacific NW.
I can give my 2 cents at 2:56 ... chloroform (and its cousins) cannot incapacitate a human that fast. There's lots of kicking, writhing and convulsive nerve reactions before the person goes to "sleep" so that's very Hollywood.

Hello Kelsey, I really enjoy your channel for about over a year now. Please go on like this, you are marvelous. You gave me a laught in nearly every video you made. As an aircraft technician I walk up and down this f...ing ladder behind the front gear in some 747's in the last years. So there are 3 things I can tell you about this ladder, which is totally wrong in this movie. 1. The procedure to open the hatch down there and lower the ladder take, for a practiced worker, about a minute. So you can't go out this hatch so fast they do in this film. :) Additionally sometimes the hatch goes stuck as you try to open it, especially when you are in a hurry. So you have to close it again and give it an other try, which takes some more time. 2. If you managed to get the hatch open and lower the ladder, this long one is really chafing on the ground! It is long enought to not touch or damage anything on the frong gear. So standing on the ladder, looking forward and wondering like in this movie is impossible while the aircraft is moving, too. It chafes on the ground and is hoping and pomping around, so you cant stand on it. I saw it one time, as we forget about it, while we are pushing the aircraft in. We had to stop pushing the aircraft and stow the ladder, before we can proceed with the push. 3. The next thing is the compartment down there, where the ladder is. You went down there, so I think you can confim this. It is absolutely tight there. Well, I am over 6 feet tall, but smaller colleagues had some issues there, too. So for two men in a hurry, in this situation, it is nearly impossible to get out of the plane in time. An other small issue I saw on the video is the first man, who got out of the plane using the ladder, and runs away from the aircraft, just runs closely behind No.3 engine and not get blown away. :) So have many nice flights, and every time safe and soft landings. Greetings from Germany.
I would disagree with one point here, you claim in the final bit of this that there is no way for that engine to accelerate as there's no one adding fuel, certainly under normal operation that would be the case, but this seems to be far outside the normal operating envelope of a 747. I'd suggest with the damage the aircraft has taken hitting the hangar and from the subsequent explosion it's possible something in the control system became damaged. Those throttles rely on sending an electrical signal which tells the FADEC the physical position of the throttle, the system then calculates the required position of the of the fuel control valve to meet the demanded thrust, and sends another electrical signal to command the actuator controlling that valve to move the valve to the appropriate position. (This is a simple explanation, based on knowledge of a generic FADEC control system, rather than with 747 specific knowledge, but the general operating principal will be the same) Anyways, my point here is that if you get an electrical fault on that system, it is conceivably possible (albeit unlikely) that the system could start commanding an increase in thrust without the physical throttle position having changed. I'll also mention that the FADEC takes in data from a number of sources including sensors in the engine and around the aircraft (temperatures at various points, pressures etc etc) to help it determine how much fuel needs to be fed into the engine to generate the desired thrust, so if these sensors are damaged and relaying bad information to the system it may well also start accelerating the engine while the system believes it's maintaining constant thrust ouput. Finally, it's theoretically possible that if that fuel control valve has taken a beating it may well be the actuator has been damaged and the valve knocked further open than it should be, although with such a sudden change in fuel input to the engine I'd expect some sort of upset, like compressor stalls or surges.
I'd love to see your thoughts on the obviously 30 mile long runway on one of the fast and the furious movies where they're inside a plane and get in a fight while it's going down a never-ending runway and then drive the cars out of the exploding airplane.
No, the tiller is inop at that point. When pushing an aircraft back a bypass pin is inserted by the ground crew that disables the hydraulics for nosewheel steering. One of the last things to do, after disconnecting the pushback tractor, is to hold up the bypass pin to show the crew that it was removed.
@@ryanstevens6010 I kinda thought so... then at least in context it sortof makes sense that if you're kidnapping/crashing ap lane like this and it's still attached to the pushback car as we can see you'd stear using differential thrust or brakes instead
As much as I love the Airbus A380 and its modern flight deck, and updated systems to help the Pilot and F/O fly, but there is something just nostalgic about the Boeing Series. From the 737 to the 777 and the Flagship 747 Boeing just knew how great a design would long live in the aviation industry. Now I'm sure the same could be said about the fans of older DC-9's and others. I'm just partial to Boeing. Aviation has come a long way and I cannot wait to see what is designed for the future.
The gold wasnt supposed to be stolen, they crashed the plane for an art heist but wanted a distraction so they dropped some piles of gold on the runway
Holy moly that music makes it hard to watch the dialogue. It sounds like music someone would add to a UA-cam clip to get around copyright strikes and then the clip would be down voted into oblivion.
That is a common complaint about the movie, that the music is too loud. I didn't notice it on youtube, but apparently in theaters it was a big problem.
Nice vid Kelsey! One thing, in the movie, they weren't trying to steal the gold, they were using it as a distraction for something else they were doing :)
I load and unload planes at UPS and 747 family being a few of them, biggest things that bother me outside what kelsey has pointed out, Where are the locks for the cargo? We have locks for every section and lock on the side railings. The inside look of the cargo deck doesn't look long enough to be a 747. Dont have a "tube" in the ceiling on our 747's, but our MD-11's do. When entering 1L on your left (for ours) we have the control panel to work positions 1/2/3 at the nose of the plane. Where are the wing walkers? why wernt the two bad guys running away from the plane BEHIND THE ENGINES get jet blasted 100 yards? before push back, the mechanic puts a pin in the hydraulic bypass in the front gear so the pilots cant snap off the tow bar by accident 14:41 bye bye tow bar by snapping the front gear or push back getting turned sideways into the engines. (i have much to complain about but this is already gone on for a bit).
Hi Kelsey, there is an old episode of The A-team where they hijack back a 747 (called Beller Air), they take control of it and land it on - probably - LAX. But after landing somehow the plane skids off the runway and ends up shattering a high glass window on a terminal.

@@RM_VFX in an interview CN said they offset the cost by selling the 747 engines.
There is a 70s movie called "Airport ’75" where a flight attendant tries to fly a 747 after the captain and fo are incapacitated (w. Charlton Heston
and Karen Black),maybe you could review it ,would be fun
I believe you are mistaken it was called airplane! (Juuuust kidding)
Yup, that's a pretty good movie, but very '70s. There's a scene in it in which Heston enters the 747 mid-flight by dangling on a cable attached to another plane. It'll be fun to see Kelsey try to explain that scene!
Or maybe "Airport 77' ". They also used a 747.
@@majorneptunejr
Or Airport 79 (Airport 80 elsewhere) with the Vietnam vet pilot using his pilot powers to fly a Concorde like it's an X-wing.
One thing I noticed is that when they drove through the parking lot, the engines didn't suck-up any of those little trees or any of the cars.
probably cause the plane wasn't actually at full thrust
but I dont know how much suction an engine can create at taxi phase levels
That’s because the plane was being towed for the scene, and the towing apparatus was edited out. For safety reasons, the plane engines were not used during this scene.
Yeah because a plane is definitely going 100% throttle on pushback lol
👍🏼 I’d like to see a Hollywood vs Reality segment about the movie “2012.”
Thank you Kelsey for another great "Hollywood vs Reality", my favourite video-series of yours. 😀👍 Tenet is besides "the Hollywood" a really exciting und good movie. Have you seen it completely? 😉 It was their intention to rise attention with all the gold on the taxiway to distract from their bigger main plan (to save the world).
Ah no I never made it to see the entire movie just this aviation section
@@74gear Thank you very much for your answer. 😀 So then yes... it would be very stupid to get to the gold like this. 🙈
P.S. Another movie with a lot of 747-Hollywood-things going on is "Turbulence" from 1997, starring Ray Liotta.
@@74gear - you said you don't fly the DreamLifter much anymore - just curious, why?
Awesome channel Kelsey! I'm not a pilot, but I LOVE your content. Very entertaining and educational...Keep it up. Until then...be safe and have fun
“how did you see this 74 gear video if it was directly below a Captain Joe video?”
Because I was inverted.
lol!
My dad was captain on 747 for Flying Tigers 🐅 for years. He then was a check captain on the MD-11 for FedEx for many years after. I recently found many hours of VHS tapes of him flying the 747 that he recorded when portable cameras were rather huge. I'm thinking about posting this footage. Any suggestions?
What's really funny is that while watching Tenet, I immediately thought of you and previous discussions that you would had in regards to the fact that all of the Freight in the back is strapped down to those channels in between so that nothing moves back and forth and when they're showing you that section I'm immediately looking for that knowing about that and of course now when I watch any movie with any airplane I'm immediately watching to see whether or not there's any fuel in the wing any fuel in the engine and whether or not there's going to be any type of an explosion simply because of the fact that you point that out so much
Nice video :) When is the second part of the most dangerous airports video coming tho?
Probably next month
@@74gearhi you’re my favorite UA-camr and you got me into aviation now I’m gonna be a pilot (747 would be great but probably not) I hope to fly a 747, 777, 787, A350, or A380! I know you won’t respond to this but thank you so much for the inspiration!!

Sunday evening means a new video from Kelsey. Thanks a lot for all of the work ans time you are putting in making these great educations videos 🍀
KELSEY!!!! you make me smile 😁! Thanks for another great video!

Dreamlifter works real quick. That’s why they are called “Dream”lifter. They speedrun every flight
They did use an old 747, so it is quite possible all you just said is what happened.
It is a 747-200 converted freighter, they removed thee PDUs and roller trays from the main deck and added a lot more lighting, but you can tell it is a freighter.
@@mborder8428 It also has the reinforcement strips above and below the side cargo door (visible as the plane powers towards the hangar)
I don’t think that he has an ‘untrained eye’.

Started watching plane disaster videos and yours sir is the best. Thanks for the good content and keep the videos coming.
Kelsey out here teaching a great class on how to steal a 747. XD
Thanks Kelsey! I love having all this inside info and a better understanding of the interworkings in the world of aviation. Keep the videos co!omg!
I don't believe the guy would be strong enough to push that large palate of gold bars off the plane. I consider that Hollywood. 😆
Looked like it was on wheels though, which makes a huge difference. I've definitely pushed around pallets with a ton or more of stuff on them.
@@patheddles4004 each gold brick weighs about 27 pounds each!
Your laugh will be delivered in 5 to 6 business days
It was lost in the mail
It's amazing how UA-cam works, never been big into planes as the pressure makes my ears hurt like fire but anyway I came across one of your videos and it sparked my interest. So after watching like 30 of your videos I have much more of a fascination with planes.... Especially how they turn
"there is no cockpit door in the cargo variant"
"it is easier to use the large side door"
"... I don't want to give you guys any idea"
Thanks, Kelsey. A breath of fresh air in a smoggy world. In Cape Town? Be in touch.
If you ever start a flight school, I'm signing up immediately.
Kelsey I really enjoy your channel. Your analysis is always so precise. I flew the 744 with a UK airline until retiring so I find all this uber-fascinating!
"Who you be calling a chunkster, boi?" 😂
When I was a kid, I lived near Boeing in Everett. My bus route on my way home from school always took us past the factory. If the doors were open, you could see the planes as they were being constructed. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!
I visited the Everett factory as a kid. Huge building. Cool place to visit as a kid, seeing where the big jets are made.
You grew up in a nice area. Love the Pacific NW.
It's hilarious when the bloke is knocked out instantly when he covers his mouth with what I am guessing is Chloroform. A usual Hollywood prop! 😂
Nice that a new H vs R came out! I’ve been waiting soooooo long for this! Thanks Kelsey! Keep the blue side up!
I can give my 2 cents at 2:56 ... chloroform (and its cousins) cannot incapacitate a human that fast. There's lots of kicking, writhing and convulsive nerve reactions before the person goes to "sleep" so that's very Hollywood.
When I'm out of recent/ new uploaded vids to watch from who I'm subscribed to I always came back to watching older vids from you. I rarley watch older vids from others
Also the fact that on the outside its a 747-200 but on the inside it has a 747-400 cockpit which is also grey instead of brownish :)
Also no CRT screens.
Additionally sometimes the hatch goes stuck as you try to open it, especially when you are in a hurry.
So have many nice flights, and every time safe and soft landings.
Greetings from Germany.
Thanks Kelsey, I'll keep this in mind the next time I steal gold from a 747.
What I can understand from this video: The creator hasn't even watched the full movie.
11:35 Ye he is looking for the part that said how to disarm an armed man in the co-pilots seat 🤣
I just got myself some 747 plane tags now you have me hooked on 747s
The photo of the car reminded me of the story of the captain that got stuck in a car after trying to take a selfie.
😂 I’d like to meet that guy some day
love the content , love seeing the dream lifter. my granddad was a main engineer that help designer her so alwasy nice seeing big blue
Finally, it's theoretically possible that if that fuel control valve has taken a beating it may well be the actuator has been damaged and the valve knocked further open than it should be, although with such a sudden change in fuel input to the engine I'd expect some sort of upset, like compressor stalls or surges.
the things that happen after this scene were realy awesome.
great movie, recommend it!
I'd love to see your thoughts on the obviously 30 mile long runway on one of the fast and the furious movies where they're inside a plane and get in a fight while it's going down a never-ending runway and then drive the cars out of the exploding airplane.
17:20
can you use the tiller while being attached to a pushback car?
No, the tiller is inop at that point. When pushing an aircraft back a bypass pin is inserted by the ground crew that disables the hydraulics for nosewheel steering. One of the last things to do, after disconnecting the pushback tractor, is to hold up the bypass pin to show the crew that it was removed.
@@ryanstevens6010 I kinda thought so...
then at least in context it sortof makes sense that if you're kidnapping/crashing ap lane like this and it's still attached to the pushback car as we can see you'd stear using differential thrust or brakes instead
Trust me, that plane scene is the smallest problem with Tenet.
@Robert Sears if u watched the film u would understand why they crashed the plane, its not prompting terrorism
I don't know it was a pretty decent movie
Well still easier to open the door and push it out than blow up the back
Entertaining & informative as always, Kelsey. Keep doing these Hollywood vs Reality clips.
Holy moly that music makes it hard to watch the dialogue. It sounds like music someone would add to a UA-cam clip to get around copyright strikes and then the clip would be down voted into oblivion.
Nope that’s the movie audio and I have to turn it down it was very loud
@@74gear I wonder how loud it is 🤔
The whole movie is like this 😂
That is a common complaint about the movie, that the music is too loud. I didn't notice it on youtube, but apparently in theaters it was a big problem.
Just watched 2012 for the first time, there’s a lot of aviation material in it, I recommend a review

Buuuuttt, _just in case_ send him 10%. ;)
they weren't after the gold btw
I love watching your videos so much!! Totally subscribed 🔥🔥🔥👊🏾
Isn’t it also a little Hollywood to just have pallets of gold bars out in the open?
For the reason of someone doing exactly that yes but they do transport gold on freighters though

Hi Kelsey, there is an old episode of The A-team where they hijack back a 747 (called Beller Air), they take control of it and land it on - probably - LAX. But after landing somehow the plane skids off the runway and ends up shattering a high glass window on a terminal.
