In this video, we discus the past, present and the future of music labels and why some artists prefer staying independent while the others prefer getting signed.
We discussed pros and cons of both and tried to dig deeper into the workings of music industry to sort of answer the burning question of Desi Hip Hop about Record Labels Vs Staying independent. This debate has been prominent in the west and about 5 years ago started floating in DHH too. With artists like Emiway Bantai making it staying independent and other artists such as Raftaar and Badshah rising up with the help of a prominent label. Question still remains, is one alternative better than the other?

Zee music gave hype to raftaar in the initial stage when kalamkaar didn't existed...and labels like spped records, times music and t series also gave boost to rappers like honey singh

Bad bunny owns 90% of his masters he is most streamed artist last year no 1 artist
An artist can achieve a lot of milestones within some threshold on his own but generally to go massive, invest more in the products and use resources like bigger artist roasters, Radio / TV , Publishing and Sync deals he needs to go to a major one. Almost every top 10 biggest artist we have globally is signed with a major label in any of the ways. But yes things are changing in favour of Artists.
BTW one question : Is working with music label AS MANAGERS like A&R MANAGERS is good? Or should someone work independently?

If you exclude the faces of the big DHH record labels, the other members of those labels are almost non-existent. Let's take Kalamkaar for example. Kr$na is definitely the face of that label and the other members are just there. Karma got some momentum during the beef season, now even his hype is dying. Talented artists are doing much better on their own, Bella is a great example.

He is Jay Z in terms of business skills . Jay Z also got rejected by every label when he was coming to the scene. And then he also opened his own record label just like what Emiway is doing now . Emiway learns from Every rapper. He has Em , Nas and Wayne's influence in his rap skills. Learned business from Jay and Russ . And is very humble and harami like 50 cent or those hip hop groups in the early stage of Rap like the Wu-Tang clan or NWA.

Staying independent is the better option in this day and age. 95% of the DHH artists who made it big are independent. DHH record labels aren't just going to sign anyone, they're going to sign talented artists who are somewhat established. Then why give the control to a label? If you're consistent enough you can do it on your own. A slow and steady rise is better than a sudden rapid rise with the help of a label. These artists have the option of building a solid position for themselves and with the right team it eventually happens. Also as an independent artist you don’t need the reach the level of Emiway to become successful. If you're somewhere in the middle you are also fine.

these days reaching out to them is very but impressing them with your art is tough. some artist puts ads on their track. some artist chase clouts. some artist diss other artists. some artist get signed to label and label promote them. there is nothing wrong in doing any of these methods. because everyone wants money for food. but only those who attracts audience with their art get famous.

What kr$na had said about independent vs signed in samay's stream is enough to end this debate. Emiway's allegations on labels were plausible some years ago but now he has started sounding like a broken record and much of his claims have already been debunked
Eniway talked about artistic freedom and rights, Karma leaving due to one of these says the concern still remains.

What Kr$na said is his opinion. But again what kind of claim is debunked bro ? I have no disrespect for signed artists but anybody who is able to make his name independently has a special influence. Emphasis on the word 'indluence' . I'll give you an example. Eminem or Tu Pac are rappers with one of the biggest influences in hip hop . But artists like Nas , Mf doom , etc are also in terms of skills are on the same level. But they don't have that influence. In the same vain , if you know Jay Z got rejected by every label when he was coming to the scene. And today he is one of the most successful rappers in hip hop and has the influence on the culture and he built that independently by making his own record label just like what Emiway is doing in dhh. Emiway has the influence on masses and no matter how much you people hate him , you need to understand that Emiway vs Raftaar beef was one of the reasons for the blow up of hip hop tracks in dhh. Emiway has a huge contribution to the dhh scene. Bohemia and Mafia mundeer laid the foundation of hip hop and Artists like Divine, Emiway and Raftaar made people understand the underground scene. So Emiway has a very big influence, all independently which is a big deal . What Kr$na said was about management teams. But when Emiway started he had no management. After his success, he opened his label and had a management team. He has made all this independently and his influence is special.

IHH Audience is finally getting matured and they have now realized the difference between REAL rap (especially LYRICAL RAP) and just Slangs with a beat in the background.
The craze is beyond words, MC STAN won Big Boss and that shows the power of our audience.
