It's clear that the single rock is being bent by that one guy and that they didn't have the budget or couldn't figure out how to animate whatever the large group was actually supposed to be bending. So it just looks absolutely absurd. Why keep that scene at all and have them bending absolutely nothing? The editing in the movie was just so bad.

I find the end of this movie disgusting. You have Sokka and Katara bowing to Aang subserviently, whereas, in the animated series you have a music swell as they stand at Aang's side when Sokka puts his hand on Aang's shoulder to indicate how far they have come since the beginning of the show.
13:43 "Show, don't tell. This whole movie is just tell." You NAILED it. The exposition is craaaaaazy. 4:10 In the show, Zuko used Gran Gran as an example of how old Aang was supposed to be. Here it just looks like he has a very weird fetish. Who storms in a village screaming that? 🤣
One thing I really hope the Netflix drama gets right is something that gets misunderstood quite often by reactors even in the OG animated show quite a bit in the Season 1 finale. Aang didn't turn into anything, the Ocean Spirit literally took over Aang's body in revenge for the Moon Spirit's death. Aang wasn't in control of any of that devastation. That's why he gets set down on the outer wall after, and then the Ocean Spirit takes Zhao. That's one of the reasons Aang was so scared of the Avatar State and the reason for the whole Season 2 opening episode, his total lack of control of the situation.
@@kmjkmjkmj I suppose it's up to interpretation, I've always seen it as mostly involuntary. Either way, most seem to miss it being the Ocean Spirit/Aang merge to begin with, so I hope it gets the same awe I think it deserves

For me, the worst change in this entire movie is one that barely talk about. In the scene where Zuko tells his origin, he said that he spoke out of term because HIS FRIENDS were going to be used as bait. In the show, they were just random recruits that had no emotional connection to Zuko. Implying in the movie had the soldiers that were going to be used as bait weren’t his friends, Zuko wouldn’t have said anything. It the worst character assassination since it turn Zuko from a young kid with a heart who love his country and it people into a privileged rich kid who doesn’t care about what happens outside his palace.

We've always been big ATLA megs fans and were so excited to see how they would fit season 1 into a movie. I will ESPECIALLY never forget the slow, gradual way this movie just sapped the spirit out of me and made me die inside until there was just this heavy pit of apathy and bitterness that made us and the whole theater walk out in almost complete silence like we just got out of a fucking funeral. As my sister and I were walking down the aisles we made only about 2 or 3 comments total "wow, that sucked", "they pronounced EVERY SINGLE name wrong!", and didn't say much else besides that both before and after out parents picked us up. We were so done haha.
Also it’s kinda funny that Yue’s actress was in something like this but then she got to redeem herself by voicing Asami in The Legend of Korra and is one of the coolest non-benders in the ATLA-verse.
I honestly think this was an adaptation of the Wikipedia synopsis of Book 1, rather than an adaptation of the actual season. They probably didn’t even watch the show, just read the Wikipedia page and called it a day.

I'm so glad you watched the movie adaptation. I don't know if i'd class it as a rite of passage but seeing your reaction to this especially after watching you fall in love with the series as we all did was great. I have to admit all these years later I still can't get over the fact that when they were trying to cut down the season for the movie they kept Haru (but put the prison for earth benders surrounded by earth and took Katara's character development away) and also chose to lose both Bumi and Suki.
This movie is so horrendous, I actually have a lot of fun watching other people react. My personal favorite highlight from the movie, is Katara and Aang’s water bending teacher going “ooooooo” 28:03 😂😂😂😂
List of things this movie did that were better than the original Yue's hair turning back to dark when she sacrifices herself was a really awesome touch and i think it would improve the original List of things I like about this movie that wouldn't work in the original Zhao just gets straight brutally killed on screen and thats pretty cool. Anyway those are all my positives for the movie
I have been too afraid to actually watch this adaptation blindly, so it will be my first time watching with you. Your reaction to the pronunciations of the names are priceless!
It's funny watching you go in blind, and then having the SAME thoughts as pretty much everyone else who saw the show and then watched this movie. Like you've gotten a good chunk of the issues, point by point, just on a first viewing. It's truly amazing.
Just finished and, yes, you did try. A very appropriate reaction to someone who truly gets the animated show. To borrow from The Ember Island Players, that wasn't a good movie...but the effects were decent. You mention the cinematography, it was done by Andrew Lesnie, who also did cinematography for the terrific The Lord of the Rings and Babe movies. No, the problem here was just with the writing, direction, and acting. You are now definitely one of us!
The one that heavily bothers me (maybe disproportionally) is Zhao screaming "We are now the gods" when he kills the moon spirit. WHICH GODS??? THERE AREN'T ANY GODS IN THIS WORLD...
To give this movie the tiniest amount of credit to its watchability, it is a fun movie to poke fun at while watching it. Also I'll say it now. In my opinion, The Blue Spirit mask in this movie actually looks really badass
They either forgot to CGI the group of earth benders bending in formation or they were bending off screen because the stone being bended is by one guy who isn’t in the group
Honestly, what MIGHT'VE worked would have been 2 movies per season for a total of 6. First movie: "The Boy in the Iceberg" -> "The Blue Spirit" (Mostly worldbuilding and character introductions with Zuko rescuing Aang being the climax.) Second movie: "The Fortuneteller" -> "The Siege of the North, Part 2" (The least amount of episodes, but the northern Water Tribe could be more fleshed out.) Third movie: "The Avatar State" -> "The Library" (The start of the journey all across the earth kingdom with the loss of Appa becoming the climax.) Fourth movie: "The Desert" -> "The Crossroads of Destiny" (Their eventual reunion with Appa as the initial goal with probably the most surprising final.) Fifth movie: "The Awakening" -> "The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse" (The adventure into the fire nation with another defeat becoming the climax.) Sixth movie: "The Western Air Temple" -> "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang" (After all the hardship they finally reach the end with an incredibly epic final.) It probably still wouldn't be perfect, but it would allow for WAY more time to be spend on fleshing out the world, characters and especially getting a coherent story.
I really love that, like most A:TLA reactors, you came into this with an open mind. And over the course of the film, it broke you down. Now you see why all the fans HATE this movie. It feels more like a student film than one produced with millions (maybe even billions) of dollars as a budget. Every time I see scenes from it, I find more things wrong with it.
@@Nomadic813 Has there not been? I could've sworn modern movies were around the 1 billion mark nowadays. But, I obviously don't pay too close attention to that. Thanks for letting me know!

I have to say that you were true to form. This is the nicest way I've ever seen anyone say "I hate it!!!!" Go back and watch the Ember Island Players now. You'll see hints that the creators knew this movie was going to be bad and snuck their frustrations in that episode, along with one or two throughout the last half of season 3.
The one scene that I thought was kinda cool in this was Iroh producing his own fire; disregarding how stupid it is that most firebenders need an existing source of flame, it did a good job showing how powerful and scary Iroh can be. Two minutes later, and the scene where they drowned Zhao was also kinda cold
Oh man, the live action movie! yikes. I knew we'd get here eventually but I was surprised to see it pop up in my feed. I agree it is a rite of passage. I don't think you can truly understand what it means to be an avatar the last air bender fan if you haven't experienced the pain that is this film.
Now you see why we're all terrified. It's been done so badlu before, the creators left pretty early on and said it wasn't going to be what they wanted it to be and now they've been showing us changes like Suki's mom, calling it a remix instead of a cover, like... They think they know better than we do what we want to see, what we like about the show, and they seem to think very highly of their artistic abilities, that their changes will make it better. We'll see, but if they fuck it up we riot. No one wants to watch remake after remake over and over again, it has to be done right. There aren't many more chances to get it right, and a live action done right would help put the story to bed for a few decades.
This film does have legitimately beautiful sets, costumes, scenery, and both Dev Patel and Jackson Rathbone are sexy AF, but a hot mess it remains, even after all these years. Nearly killed the film careers of half the people involved.
the positives of this movie (for me) were the costumes, aang’s tattoo design, and the actual sets. everything outside of that gives me an allergic reaction lmao my parents bought me this movie when it first came out in 2010 because I loved the show so much.
4:16 "It looks like he got scratched by a cat" my friend said the scar looks like a diaper rash LMFAO
my roommate said the scar looks like mild sweat rash lmao
It's weird how the actor playing Zuko is angry one minute and then whispers the next minute.
List of things this movie did that were better than the original
Yue's hair turning back to dark when she sacrifices herself was a really awesome touch and i think it would improve the original
List of things I like about this movie that wouldn't work in the original
Zhao just gets straight brutally killed on screen and thats pretty cool.
Anyway those are all my positives for the movie
"Are you the uvutar ung?"
Aang in the show: excels at water bending due to its similarity with Airbending
Movie Oong: “he was having trouble mastering water bending”
wut
I have been too afraid to actually watch this adaptation blindly, so it will be my first time watching with you.
Your reaction to the pronunciations of the names are priceless!
2:49 Who says "Uncle! Look!" here? Because Zuko's jaw doesn't move, so it isn't him.
When the Ember Island Players actually have the second best retelling of the story.. Until the new live action show
ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Everything changed when the Shyamalan Attacked. 😂
It's funny watching you go in blind, and then having the SAME thoughts as pretty much everyone else who saw the show and then watched this movie.
Like you've gotten a good chunk of the issues, point by point, just on a first viewing.
It's truly amazing.
"now that I've seen whatever that was" 😂😂😂 yeeeeah we all feel the same way.
"Are you the Ahvatar Ung?" Has got to be the worst line of the entire movie. Any other honorable mentions?
*[hands you the entire script]*
This isn't a line, but they did Yue's hair so dirty. They literally made her a di c k head 😭
The one that heavily bothers me (maybe disproportionally) is Zhao screaming "We are now the gods" when he kills the moon spirit. WHICH GODS??? THERE AREN'T ANY GODS IN THIS WORLD...
not a line, but Yue's hair. They did her so dirty😭😭
“Leave him alone!!”
Nah they let the stone slowly float in front of him and he then shoots it across the place... which makes it even worse.
Smh 10 people doing hot potato to throw a rock… I didn’t think it could’ve gotten worse but yeah that does
Honestly, what MIGHT'VE worked would have been 2 movies per season for a total of 6.
First movie: "The Boy in the Iceberg" -> "The Blue Spirit"
(Mostly worldbuilding and character introductions with Zuko rescuing Aang being the climax.)
Second movie: "The Fortuneteller" -> "The Siege of the North, Part 2"
(The least amount of episodes, but the northern Water Tribe could be more fleshed out.)
Third movie: "The Avatar State" -> "The Library"
(The start of the journey all across the earth kingdom with the loss of Appa becoming the climax.)
Fourth movie: "The Desert" -> "The Crossroads of Destiny"
(Their eventual reunion with Appa as the initial goal with probably the most surprising final.)
Fifth movie: "The Awakening" -> "The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse"
(The adventure into the fire nation with another defeat becoming the climax.)
Sixth movie: "The Western Air Temple" -> "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang"
(After all the hardship they finally reach the end with an incredibly epic final.)
It probably still wouldn't be perfect, but it would allow for WAY more time to be spend on fleshing out the world, characters and especially getting a coherent story.
I really love that, like most A:TLA reactors, you came into this with an open mind. And over the course of the film, it broke you down.
Now you see why all the fans HATE this movie. It feels more like a student film than one produced with millions (maybe even billions) of dollars as a budget. Every time I see scenes from it, I find more things wrong with it.
... There's never been a film that even remotely approaches a billion dollars in budget.
The stated budget for this film was 150 million USD.
@@Nomadic813 Has there not been? I could've sworn modern movies were around the 1 billion mark nowadays. But, I obviously don't pay too close attention to that. Thanks for letting me know!
28:03 They WISH they were as good as Helm's Deep's battle. Remember how intimidating it was when ALL the Uruk-hai slammed their spears into the ground in unison? The loud crash of doing it all at once instead of tippy tapping randomly?
the only one who is somewhat trying is Dev Patel and I feel so bad for him
I have to say that you were true to form. This is the nicest way I've ever seen anyone say "I hate it!!!!"
Go back and watch the Ember Island Players now. You'll see hints that the creators knew this movie was going to be bad and snuck their frustrations in that episode, along with one or two throughout the last half of season 3.
Me and my sister regularly quote ‘are you the uhvatar ong?’ Because it’s just too ridiculous not to be iconic
To quote the SpongeBob SquarePants movie my eyes!!!
Katara is just so full of hope, it's making her TEARBEND!
This is the equivalent of them taking the play at ember island and turning it into a live action film😂😂
The play was better! 😂
That is an insult to the play, the Fire Nation clearly put in more effort! 🤣
@@badboyluvr true. At least they did their research😂
Of all the people who have zero personality, i am so glad that you mention Appa above everyone else.
I'm sorry you had to go through that, but you are now a true fan.
I enjoyed your reaction, not the movie. Tho, I liked how they did the tattoos.
They couldnt even put Zuko in a PONY TAIL. You know it's gonna suck when they dont care enough to get the simplest design details correct 💀
Ive avoided seeing this movie for years and finally, with the cocoa couch, i shall watch-
Percy Jackson has the peter johnson movies, this is shyamalamadingdong's Last Ovatar film
Thanks for your sacrifice. It's somehow even worse than i remembered
17:30 I'm still not over Ong's stab-bending master betraying him in this scene. What a heart-wrenching moment.
Shamylan has a true gift for making a beloved TV show into the most painful slog ever put to film
Noooo, I was expecting that you'd upload the final episodes of the show today!
he did but it got taken down
sameeee
@@penguin50279 IT GOT TAKEN DOWN?? NOOOO
There is no “The Last Airbender” in Ba Sing Se
Here we are safe. Here we are free.
You tried harder than most to find anything good in this, and that's what I really appreciate about you. You stay positive no matter what!
33:01 "her hair dye gave life back to the fish" that was hilarious 😂
You're in for a world of pain and cringe. There's a reason we don't speak of this movie...
There is no The Last Airbender movie in Ba Sing Se.
I thought we don't talk about Bruno?
This film does have legitimately beautiful sets, costumes, scenery, and both Dev Patel and Jackson Rathbone are sexy AF, but a hot mess it remains, even after all these years. Nearly killed the film careers of half the people involved.
I really hope Netflix uses these actors in the 3rd season of the live action show. Just imagine them as the Ember Island Players!
the positives of this movie (for me) were the costumes, aang’s tattoo design, and the actual sets. everything outside of that gives me an allergic reaction lmao
my parents bought me this movie when it first came out in 2010 because I loved the show so much. I literally haven’t dared to watch it again until now and it’s just as bad as I remember😭
Now you have suffered as we have suffered 😂😂😂
The thing is M. Knight lied to everyone, and said he'd watched the show and fallen in love with it as his kids did.
