- Southeast of San Francisco, on the way out to California's Central Valley, thousands of wind turbines dot the landscape of Altamont Pass. Mounted both in rows and individually, machines with large propellers catch the wind, turning round and round at different speeds. Learn how wind energy is generated and stored for use in this most peculiar area, and its impact on living things both near and far.
I used to go through these hills all the time as a kid, and it was always my favorite part of the otherwise boring drive. It was a really cool sight, watching those things spin.

I love these things! We need more of them. Clean electricity is a good thing.
Not clean. They leak oil. The blades do not degrade when worn out. The manufacture and assembly require a ton of truck transport and assembly. They kill birds, lots of birds. And, they will ice up in an ice storm and quit working until they thaw out.
The UK is now the world leader in offshore wind production. Last year they ran 17% of the national grid on wind. Woo hoo!! PS 1 MW turbines are SO 2012. GE just unveiled a 12 MW turbine. Immensely tall for a floating structure.

Did you notice that a lot of turbines are not turning. The wind turbies pictured are incredible maintenance hogs. AC or DC they always have a governor mechanism similar to the "constant speed" governors on many prop-driven airplanes. Aviatirs will tell you these (much smaller) constant speed props are very difficult and expensive to maintain.
Plus...you have to find daredevils to work at that height in that much wind.
+Fenton Bevan No manufacturing process is inherently green. Look at the damage caused by unrestricted clothmaking, just about any type of mining incl coal or building construction.
It takes effort, innovation and regulation to improve them. But companies will run to low-wage, low-regulation countries to avoid taking responsibility for their messes.
But it's not absolutely necessary to use neodymium for turbines; Enercon's giant 7.5 MW E-126 turbine which has been made since 2007 doesn't use permanent magnets.

I think that they have found that the wind turbine farms use a lot less people to maintain them than the older steam generated power plants. Those power plants required constant maintenance, with a crew working 24/7-365. They must feed in very clean water, provide water treatment to the cooling towers, and keep feeding it with coal or natural gas. And the security forces that must be there all the time.
I want to build one.
Since this share was back in 2012 what are your views (Exploratorium) what are your views and thoughts for 2017? Is there homes near by that can see the windfarms every day and show on youtube how many work everyday?

All over the country, wind turbines are in disrepair and disarray. Broken blades. Seized generators, or completely toppled over. Either by the wind they once attempted to harness or by the lack of quality materials, engineering, and/or assembly. Geothermal seems more reliable and consistent than these problematic contraptions.

Repowered wind farm? Rebuilt from a crap wind farm more like, how much did that cost? Not very sustainable!!
The whoosh of the blades generates VAD (vibroacoustic disease), and is destructive due to the ILFN (infrasound and low-frequency noise) at even the mile to six mile range, some cite twelve miles, for living creatures, including people. Flicker from the blades cause problems such as seizures. The EMF (electric and magnetic field) effect is horrendous. These turbines use significant fuel energy if actually applied to a grid, requiring load compensation due to their non-dispatchable output. In fact, the units produce such a poor quality output it typically can only be counted as 'energy credits', not power for the grid. These towers and turbines should be placed in the city, really . . . but no one wants these in their city and I wouldn't actually wish it on them because they are not worth the cost, effort and losses they induce.
So, they disrupt and poison the farm lands. They need to be cooled and need to be lit and need to be heavily lubed with oils and greases that need to be frequently replaced and should (properly) stay in motion so they don't break (which requires conventional power). The blades break regularly, requiring dangerous maintenance or replacement, and the mega-towers are even more costly to replace than their 'tiny' predecessors, so much so that it just isn't happening ... they are dangerous equipment (and rather ugly) when they reside rusting on the countryside.

Mark Rinard The output of industrial wind turbines is non-dispatchable, so the compensatory equipment is a gas turbine power plant, which has the best capability to ramp up for compensation. It isn't perfect by any means, but it is the answer available at this time. The turbines also need significant electricity to operate, as noted, for example, by Lisa Sullivan of Next Era Energy Resources in an article in a Nebraska newspaper.
As for the ILFN (infrasound and low-frequency noise) output by industrial wind turbines you can read The Cape Bridgewater Acoustic Report (www.pacifichydro.com.au/english/our-communities/communities/cape-bridgewater-acoustic-study-report/). Steven Cooper has conducted numerous studies on both environments for the Australian people and government, and he comments on that in this study.

Mark Rinard The systems have been modified, you are right. However, the same decision that means a lot of them don't turn anymore a lot of the time puts new stresses on the blades. Face it, Mark Rinard, names will fit when you make the wrong choices and then mock the ones you have hurt.

Should I go on? Everyone who has had to study these things as an observer knows that details are changed by the ones who cut wind so they can distract people from the truth. Meanwhile, what do you really want? We've already talked about the destruction from this, about the real product of wind turbines, the various forms of life destroying and property destroying pollution the turbines send out into the countryside, the spikes that have to be blocked from the electric grid, the oils and lubricants and parts that are used up so quickly in operation.
Turbine cowboys ride the oil ride. You don't need turbines to make money as daredevils. There are plenty of honorable ways to be your most glorious self.
Wind turbines were somewhat benign when limited to areas like Altamont (if one ignored the bird kills) but now they are just too big and widespread to be green in a rational context. The excuses made for their visual and audible impact are evil in many ways. These are gigantic structures infiltrating millions of acres of scenery. Why in the hell is that suddenly good for the environment? In pure economic terms, they barely perform as stated (wind is erratic) and require 24/7 traditional power backup because of that. When the industry says a wind "farm" will power "75,000 homes" it will only do that about 30% of the time in most cases, and often not when the power is truly needed, so that figure is very misleading.

We put up windmills all over because the wind is always blowing somewhere and many places we put them up we have much difficulty because it is almost always windy. We do not put them up where there is "erratic". Studies are done, towers are put up well in advance to determine the wind crop. It's really the same for traditional power plants when they go down other power plants cover the power they should be making. This is the same for the wind industry and coal. When the wind slows in one area it is more than enough in others to carry the load. You really need to learn more about the wind industry, you tend to sound very ignorant.
+Geo T Think of it like this. You buy a bike to save gas. When you ride the bike you're saving gas when you need the car you're burning gas. Is the bike green? No, it requires car back up, it requires a bike industry to build it. Now, as you get stronger and learn more about riding the bike you use the car less and less. Thus saving more and more gas. Coal plants are killing the ocean. We get the majority of our O2 from the oceans. When that is gone what will the birds breath? Wind turbines are here to stay. We're putting up thousands more this year and are slated to do so for the foreseeable future.

You don't know my understanding of this issue, and like most wind fanboys, you don't want to talk about the desecration of nature, except for the parroted line of "they're beautiful" which is a damned lie in any natural context.
