I love that they release quarterly editions that are all different in some way. Just got the Vintage set and the Birds and Trees of North America set for Christmas and they are great.
Great summery Parker! I too have gone to the Leuchtturm1917 A5 notebooks. Love their new 120gsm version! Another pocket notebook I now use is the pocket (3.5 x 5.5) ZEQUENZ Classic 360 plain. The plain has thicker paper that will never bleed, feather, or ghost when using fountain pens. (I'm not affiliated with them.) I put a pen loop on the inside back cover and slip them into my jeans back pocket or in my suit jacket. A very reasonable option is the Walmart Exceed A5 dotted notebooks with 110gsm paper. They work well for my woodworking sketch plans. Thanks again for the summary!
I really love the RHODIA GOALBOOK which is high quality and perfect for my daily journaling. It has a sturdy softcover binding in many beautiful colors. The dot grid paper (90g) is perfect for writing with a fountain pen. The sheets are numbered which I find very practical, also there is an index. Furthermore, a pen loop, an expandable inner pocket and two ribbon bookmarks. I discovered the Rhodia Goalbook 7 years ago at a fountain pen shop in New York City. They highly recommend it for writing with a fountain pen. Since then I only use this notebook. The size is A5 and there is an orange elastic band that keeps the notebook closed and does not wear out. Also, I personally find the light ivory color of the paper to be very eye-friendly as opposed to brilliant white paper.
Love your videos! I was wondering if you’d consider doing a video on what to do on the first page of a notebook, it always seems so daunting cause you want it to be cool

I'd like to see a video on it as well!
@@RoundSeal I typically start with a simple name-and-reward-if-found page, followed by a Table of Contents. You've got some good ideas here though, too.
One more thing on Lochby…their notebooks are stitched and use Tomoa River paper that is thinner (so more pages than a Field Notes) and perfect fountain pens. I really like Apica notebooks. They are thinner (fewer pages) and great for singular subjects. They are incredibly durable even though a softcover. I’ve never had one come apart despite harsh treatment. Their A5 size is perfect for a short story length writing (at least for my handwriting size).
Greetings from Australia. Great Video. I enjoyed it. For me, Midori A5 is the best notebook for fountain pens. I have several books in leather covers, but the card cover has been specially treated. It is durable and patinas over time. I have my Aphorism notebook in that cover. Thanks for the inspiration. 😊 Moleskin and Field Notes are not fountain pen friendly, so I avoid those books. For special projects, I use Paperblanks Ultra journal in 100gsm. They take most fountain pens easily. But one has to ensure that the gsm is checked out before buying. My Pocket Notebook is an Apica A6. Great Japanese paper, which is fountain pen friendly. They cost about $6 Aud. And they can be bought with an Indian leather cover for about $34 Aud. I'm a fountain pen fanatic, so I spend a lot of time researching notebooks. I have also ventured onto Temu and bought unbranded sheepskin notebooks, which are, on average, about $10 Aud. But one needs to look out for "thickened paper." There is heavy ghosting on some, but no bleed through. Fountain pen friendly is important for me. Thanks for the video.
✍I definitely love seeing all the options of notebooks and sizes and covers. And I'm totally there with you: notebooks gotta smell good! I'm a pastor, and I find myself writing/journaling all the time. I've recently added pocket notebooks to my arsenal.
One of the best things i have changed is breaking things up into smaller sections. Instead of trying to fill out a 100 to 200 page notebook I use field notes or campus notebooks from kukoyo. I use them as project notebooks and can easily catalog them as well. Even color code. I may be moving to a looseleaf binder system soon though as i can change things easily instead of 20 notebooks all around me.
I’ve been using a paper republic pocket cover. I actually love their bungee system for putting in notebooks and the flexibility to add more or less/customize to taste. Very high quality products.
I just started using a Leuchtturm pocket softcover, and I'm loving it! I'm also starting a new bullet Journal, their 2nd edition; the paper quality feels amazing; I really like it. I feel like I'm becoming a Leuchtturm fanboy. I'd like to try out a Midori, but I don't know how I would use it.
I’ve tried Leuchtturm note books before and found they feather with my fountain pens. I think the issue is that i have mostly medium sized nibs that are tuned to write very wet. Part of the writing joy for me is seeing the beautiful characteristics of the ink. I have a lifetime worth of notebooks as i found myself exploring my inner world and then metaphysics and philosophy from a very young age. I love writing and exploring my world that way. For me, i keep coming back to any notebook that has Tomoe River Paper (TRP). I love it so much that i stocked up hoarder style on notebooks with TRP paper when we heard the company were closing down. So glad i did as the new company and the new paper they make isn’t as good. Ahhhhhhhh, I’ve always been a journaling nerd, but am now fully a paper snob. Thanks for your videos. I listen to all of them 👍🏻
I'm an ink fiend myself, and echo your comments. I have to have TRP to get the best out of some inks, but for daily writing I default to Leuchtturm1917 and Midori. My inks look really good in the Regalia paper in my Endless Recorder notebook, but it has that sludgy feeling you got in the old Yamamoto Cosmo Note. Being an ink fiend, though, I'm very forgiving if a very wet flow from my broad nib dries to gorgeousness! Have you tried Musubi or Nanami Paper Seven Seas? They both used the old TRP but it's probably the new TRP at this point. They're top quality notebooks qua notebooks, though. I bought a bunch of the Traveler's lightweight paper in both the passport and regular sizes when I heard they still had the old formula TRP. My guess is that they've since switched all the lightweight paper over to new formula, but hadn't heard for certain. Sorry for the inkstream of consciousness! I don't have anyone in my life of similar stationery militancy.
@ Hi! Yes, I have several of the Seven Seas notebooks that I got ages ago that I’ve not used. They’re in my precious stockpile of old TRP notebooks. I’m slowly using them in the hope that someone will manufacture a new paper that meets my expectations. Kunisawa make notebooks with ultra premium Japanese paper. It writes great with a wet nib and very smooth, however it’s not thin. Not 52gsm. But I do enjoy it for a change, though they’re a little hard to find. And I’m in Australia so shipping for everything costs a lot. 🫣🙄
@@krakentowa8727 That's really interesting. I'll have to try out Kunisawa some day. Musubi was pretty pricey to begin with and then was fairly expensive to ship to North America from Singapore. Though they're in your same hemisphere I'd imagine they're still not cheap to ship. Some day I might scratch my way through Yamamoto's paper tastings. Though ink is my first love, there's nothing quite like premium paper.
Notebook Emoji (I gotta figure out how to find those.) fellow notebook geek here. I’ve been journaling for over 40 years and have several favorites of my own. Incidentally, the binding method that Midori MD uses is ancient, highly skilled, and surprisingly durable. I too used to fear that they’d fall apart, but then I made a friend in the book binding business, and he taught me that the glue/cheesecloth binding will outlast smythsewn, and have the added plus of laying flat. So, use those Midori MD’s with absolute confidence!
I use Traveler's Company notebooks post Midori and use a number of different inserts. I use the regular size as a combination bullet journal and work notes among other notes. I use the passport as a pocket notebook as a brain dump. I do have some Rhodia pads for notes on my certification classes.
Enjoyed the overview video. I recently starting using/enjoying Field Notes ... you are right, they do have some interesting artistic designed covers. Collecting those is a new hobby. Happy New Year.
I use a Markings journal it’s super cheap compared to the other notebooks and can be found at Walgreens. Handles fountain pen, ball point pen and pencils with no bleed through.
I've recently started using the Everbook system which Murdy makes a folio for and it's been surprisingly great for all of my different pockets of notes that I like to keep in lieu of having multiple notebooks all over the place. I'm really enjoying it.
Yo I am a lover of loose leaf over notebooks, forced chronological organization is practical f-ism to me, so thank you for the pointer i checked it out it looks extremely promising
I use 3 main things. For creative things I use a travelers company notebook with whatever insert fits the task, for just about any other information I use the dot grid rite In the rain notebooks ( lots of sizes I use a small staple pocket notebook and few a larger fabric cover ones), For voice I use a Sony xu570? Or something similar (an all in one voice recorder)-I did try a plaud when it first came out, honestly worked great I just hated having to use my phone so quickly swapped to an standalone device. And I tried the field notes expedition but hated the paper(it’s very plastic feeling, much prefer the kind of waxy heritage feel of rite in the rain) being restricted by my want for weatherproofness has been honestly nice as I don’t spend too much money on experimentation on different notebooks. I think I’m soon to add a 4th system with obsidian on my computer.
Baron Fig makes a notebook cover that fits a B6. I like their notebooks, too. They are generally friendly to fountain pens of medium size or smaller and can handle larger nibs if you use a medium blue or lighter ink or don't mind a bit of ghosting.
Aw yeah field notes! Great for everyday carry. Not water proof though, if you’re a fishing or in active duty, I’d say rite in the rain is better. Sketchbook companies seem to have really nice paper quality for stationery, like the leuchttrum (as you were saying). Cool list!
I love all notebooks!! Yes, I am a Nerd when it comes to notebooks. I have stacks of different types. Plus a bunch of leather covers for A5 sizes. But I guess my most fave is the Travelers Notebook Company. Their leather covers are very simple and very plain. But you can add pockets, etc to the inside covers. If you have never checked them, do so.📔
I too am obsessed with notebooks. My favorite is still the Moleskine soft cover. But that is because unlike everyone else apparently, I use a pencil. Although, I am currently looking for the perfect pencil to replace what I currently use, the PaperMate Sharpwriter. (Thank you Adam Savage.) I freaking love my journal though. I carry it with me everywhere I go. I may try to Leuchtturm1971. It looks similar to the Moleskine. Thanks for the video, it was super thorough, which is what I like.
I believe it's pronounced as "Mol-les-kin-ney", like how Italians would say it. The elastic flat strings all fail in the end - I wish they change them. The stitching is just machine sewing, not saddle stitching like I do with leather crafting. I was so disappointed with the elastic bands and the market for leather covers are not answering my needs, I started to create my own notebook organizers and specifically for the pens I use. The best paper I had ever used is the Tomeo River paper at only 52g/sqm - it still can take watercolor and of course fountain pen nibs just glide on the surface.
I have hundreds of notebooks and have kept a notebook for many years. I'm always searching for the perfect notebook to use in my three notebook system. I do disagree with your favorite notebooks because I prefer notebooks that use 120 GSM to 160 GSM lines paper. The reason is that it drives me crazy when the paper curls as I write further and further down the page. Leuchtrurm notebooks use 90 GSM, Field Notes 80 or 90 and Moleskine uses 70 GSM. Way too thin. Van Pads makes a great pocket notebook that uses 120 GSM. Notem makes a great medium sized NB that uses 100 GSM paper and lays flat. Like you, I could go on forever about notebooks. My two cents, for now. (Hopefully no typos - typing on my phone).
Yep! I once again used your ParkNotes code to buy a ParkNotes Murdy Creative Co notebook that arrived today. My third Murdy Creative Co. Notebook. I blame you, sir! Seriously, love the product and always love the videos. You have drawn me into philosophy as well. What should I use my ParkNotes Pocket notebook for?
Are you aware of the notebook used by the character Rust Cohle from True Detective Season 1? It was like this big ledger. I believe he used leuchtturm A4+ master. What do you feel of notebooks of that size?
On digital notetaking, tried & true Windows Notepad to transcribe any VMs while at my laptop, as well as virtual webinars and meeting notes. For transcribing, I use a Mead Study App Notebook that will save my handwritten notes and skerches to PDF, which is all that I need for A2D transfers.

It's roughly 'LOYSH-term' in English. Not a weird name at all! I'm very fond of trying out no-name brand / euro-store pocket notebooks for my trash books, as you can occasionally find some real gems in there. I'm currently using a B6 Midori for my commonplace, and have really enjoyed every Leuchtturm I've used. Can't afford Moleskines these days, but I don't find that a loss as the quality isn't as good as other alternatives despite the higher price.
Loysh-term-1917 definitely is weird haha, it's super long. "Hey do you like those Lighthouse 1917s?" There’s no good way to abbreviate it either because even LT1917 is long to say 😅
@@ParkerNotes Nah, I love the idea of a notebook being referred to as a lighthouse! ♥ Gathering thoughts, like light, to guide in dark times. We usually just call them Leuchtturms in the notebook community without the 1917 at the end; certainly shorter syllable-wise than Hobonichi, or other brands like Stalogy or Pen & Gear.
@@ikonographics It's not. The 'sh' isn't quite as hard as we would say in English (like sheet, shiver, ash, etc) but it is a soft 'sh' regardless. Loch has a hard 'k' sound, much like lock & key. Normally 'ch' would be pronounced with a hard 'k' sound in English, but in this case, it's pronounced like chevron, chalet, etc.
@@RoundSeal It's certainly closer to describe it as sounding like the "ch" in "loch" than as sounding like "sh": it'd need to be spelled „Leuschtturm” in that case. The "ch" is an ich-laut (/ç/ in IPA), and the closest sound in English is the "h" in "human". It's further forward than the ach-laut in "loch", but not as far forward as "sh" and definitely not a sibilant like "sh".
Parker, Lord Notebook Czar! Sometimes the role of leader / Czar falls upon those who do not want the title but are most deserving of it. Just remember, trust in the wisdom of the Universe…this was meant to be! As an aside, I love your philosophical and theological content too, have you ever considered doing some YT shorts with philo/theo prompts that we can use to help us write in all these wonderful journals you describe? I know that at least for me that I can be at a loss for what to write, think of is as Contemplio Block. Cheers!
📓 -- i started with the Midori notebooks, but since have found the liking of the paper on the Kokuyo brand. i like their books because they use a soft d-ring binding as well has some have plastic hard covers. much more of a student style notebook tho. i also REALLY like their Kokuyo Symtec A5 notebook cover the amount you can fit in that cover and the versatility i get using it for work purposes is just perfect! -- but i also would like to add that i greatly appreciate the work you do and how much you have inspired my new to writing habits! thank you,
My favorite is the pen and gear spiral 4x6 90 page notebook. at $1.34 it is perfect. I use ball point, but heard it's fountain pen friendly, water color friendly and the paper crinkles. What else do you really need? 🤣
Need to check out the Cafe Notes by Nanami. It’s a B6 slim w/ grid paper (or lined but I only ever get grid). Super nice. I believe Leuchtturm just dropped a 400+ A5 as well. I definitely want to get one. I’ve got a Moleskine expanded for my Jiu Jitsu notes but it’s only good for a ball point pen. Love the notebook - paper is trash 😢. Love Rogue Journals as well. Been following them since 2005 I want to say. Great books!
I think it’s pronounced “loyschtrum”. I use Midori and Leuchttrum but I made my own leather covers for them. I’m a therapist and the clients who take to journaling we will make then a Midori style. Gives them some ownership and personal attachment to their journal.
I really like Iroful, esp if you like Midori. Leuchtterms, I love, but they don't like fountain pens if you secrete a lot of oil... I end up resting my hand on a blotter paper and that fixes it. So... Additions being blotter paper inserts and Iroful A5s
Wal-Mart's Pen+ Gear 100 gsm notebook (the next gen from Exceed) has turned out to be quite good and a great budget book if one can not get a Leuchtturm (I use both). Leuchtturm...the gold standard for paper that is not Japanese paper.
I've found that paper surface and opacity make more of a difference than paper thickness. Some thick papers take ink like a paper towel. Some thin papers can take a double-broad nib in stride.
I'm always skeptical when someone says they're a theologian and I've been wondering about your stance for a while but as you like Doctrine and Devotion all my worries have gone. I miss that podcast.
📓I'm such a notebook nerd too :D I love to try new brands and I also used to be addicted to Moleskin until they started disappointing me some years back... Loved the video, would've liked to know a bit more about the paper quality on some of them to know if I can write with a fountain pen in them... But I think I'll have a go at a Midori one after watching your video (even though I'm not sure if they are fountain pen friendly?). Just got a beautiful notebook cover a few weeks ago, I thought I would use with another notebook I own but then realized it doesn't fit it, but I think it will fit a Midori notebook quite well so I'll use that as an excuse to get one :D Thank you for the inspiration!
Gracias y saludos
Love that card ai recorder, but man I will have to wait to get some more funds. I already use a 30$ dictaphone, and just replay all the recordings on a voice to text free thing on google docs and then review them and edit to then catalog. And i feel cool talking into a dictaphone. Edit: nevermind I just looked more at the card recorder and its behind a subscription. Absolutely not when free and cheaper software and hardware works great and isnt beheld to paywalls.
@ParkerNotes looking at it more and some reviews I retract my statement and dismissal. The pay wall seems to be for those using it professionally not casually. When looked as a business expense for meetings and the enhanced ai it is actually quite affordable compared to a DIY solution or hiring someone to type your meetings and such. The little neck version is quite interesting as well as a wrist piece or around the neck.

The table of contents is definitely my go-to, but a cover-page with a start date is a good-looking alternative if that's not of interest.
Moleskin and Field Notes are not fountain pen friendly, so I avoid those books.
Aussie too, what fountain pens do you recommend? I’m wanting to buy one but a lot of the reviews aren’t Australia friendly
Love the bookshelves
🙌🙌🙌
Happy New Year and all the best.
Rhodia A5 dotted goalbook is the supreme notebook.
The amount of notebooks on you’re desk is giving me anxiety 😂. Have you looked into the everbook method? It’s super flexible utilising loose leaf.
Google voice recorder is like plaud without the subscription fees.
Hi, great channel! Muji do some great notebooks and at very reasonable prices. They have a comprehensive range of sizes and papers.
Baron Fig makes a notebook cover that fits a B6. I like their notebooks, too. They are generally friendly to fountain pens of medium size or smaller and can handle larger nibs if you use a medium blue or lighter ink or don't mind a bit of ghosting.
Since I discovered Md paper midori notebooks I cannot go back to any other brand the paper is just amazing!
I use an A5 six ring binder for my bujo so collections can move period to period without rewrite or carrying old binders.
Have you considered using an Everbook by Murdy, @jbkerns? It changed how I journal and organize myself.
Aw yeah field notes! Great for everyday carry. Not water proof though, if you’re a fishing or in active duty, I’d say rite in the rain is better. Sketchbook companies seem to have really nice paper quality for stationery, like the leuchttrum (as you were saying). Cool list!
Thanks! Field Notes has a newish waterproof memo book that I've been using during jiujitsu haha. They're pretty cool
@ ooh yeah, cool! I forgot about that one! Made of plastic I think.. also, slightly bigger than the RITR staple. Worth a go for sure
Stationery not stationary….sorry, it’s a pet hate.
@ man, this is why English speaking countries are one of the only to have spelling bees- fixed it!
@@k1ng_chicken All the best for 2025
I suggest that apica, campus, and iroful loose leaf and bound notebooks are great if not better fountain pen options as well.
Great content - thank you for sharing about the tools you lean on! 📘📘
(Thank you Adam Savage.)
I freaking love my journal though. I carry it with me everywhere I go. I may try to Leuchtturm1971. It looks similar to the Moleskine. Thanks for the video, it was super thorough, which is what I like.
Good one, Parker! 📒
Notebook wars.... Hell, I was there. Wading through the 'inkcidents', an storming through the comment sections like so many paper cuts...
My favorites are the Lochby pocket notebook and the Hemlock & Oak notebooks and sketchbooks.
I have $1,000 worth of Murdy products. I love his work.
Rhodia make some great stuff as well - pretty affordable, in the UK at least, and very fountain pen friendly
Hi, I am 1:10 into the video and I am hooked. I came here for notebooks and stayed for the philosophy.
📓 my go to is the Smythson Panama in Mara and the Smythson Soho in Mara. Got to love them. Great video. Greeting from the Netherlands.
📒
Thanks for all of the great content this year, and Happy New Year.
🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝 thank you!!
Have you tried the 120g Leuctturm1917
Great video....with some great insight into the world notebook .....Thank you keep it coming
Leuchtturn 1917 Journal books are sold at Barnes and Noble book stores. They have a good selection of them in various styles.
Amazon Wanderer leather stuff has been a value purchase for both my A5 and pocket passport sized binders.
Also a big fan of Leuchtturm 1917. I use my fountain pens in them all the time with any problems.
Some recommendations from a fellow notebook enthusiast:
Traveller’s Notebook
Paper Republic
Bomo Art (handmade customizable masterpieces with unique original vintage art of their own creative deaigners)
Paperblanks
And Midori does sell an excellent quality plastic cover which is handy if you like going creative with the covers.
Check them out if you are in mood of discovery.
The best: Traveler’s Notebook
it's 2025, i just started my pocket catch all small notebook. It's fulfilling to list everything on a small notebook. My brain can relax. HAHA
🙌🙌🙌
📓 thank you so much for this!!

Great video 📓! I am a notebook nerd and these videos speak to my soul, lol. All the best for a great 2025 and continued success. - Jeff
The "ch" is pronounced the same as in the word loch, not "sh"
Loved it very nice to hear about those, btw which brand was the moriarty Red notebook?
Smythson of Bond Street
Have you ever considered index cards and a slip box?
Parker, Lord Notebook Czar! Sometimes the role of leader / Czar falls upon those who do not want the title but are most deserving of it. Just remember, trust in the wisdom of the Universe…this was meant to be! As an aside, I love your philosophical and theological content too, have you ever considered doing some YT shorts with philo/theo prompts that we can use to help us write in all these wonderful journals you describe? I know that at least for me that I can be at a loss for what to write, think of is as Contemplio Block. Cheers!
talking notebook! Chic Sparrow make some awesome notebook covers as well with nice thick leather.
-- but i also would like to add that i greatly appreciate the work you do and how much you have inspired my new to writing habits! thank you,
I grabbed a few Kokuyo's because of a Jared Henderson video. Haven't used them much yet but so far I like them
I've been enjoying your videos! It's motivated me to start using notebooks more and my phone less. Also, nice collection of IBJJF medals btw!
I need to try the Lechtrum. I’m curious how they compare to the Amazon knock off I buy. They are so good I have been hesitant to try anything else!
Now to extreme stress test them and test their durability through destructive testing 📓 hardcover vs softcover?
I think it’s pronounced “loyschtrum”. I use Midori and Leuchttrum but I made my own leather covers for them. I’m a therapist and the clients who take to journaling we will make then a Midori style. Gives them some ownership and personal attachment to their journal.
I really like Iroful, esp if you like Midori. Leuchtterms, I love, but they don't like fountain pens if you secrete a lot of oil... I end up resting my hand on a blotter paper and that fixes it. So... Additions being blotter paper inserts and Iroful A5s
I bought some slim Pen & Gear notebooks for $1 each at Walmart. They take my fountain pen really nice. I was surprised.
📕 What is your creative process? You mentionned it when talking about the B6+ - which has also become my favorite. 😊
Tienes que probar los Plotter Notebooks .
I don't see the murdy link. More specifically, the link takes me to an A6 book but you said you are using 1917 which is A5 from what I can tell.
📙great video. I wish I would’ve saw this before I bought all my moleskine notebooks.
Wal-Mart's Pen+ Gear 100 gsm notebook (the next gen from Exceed) has turned out to be quite good and a great budget book if one can not get a Leuchtturm (I use both). Leuchtturm...the gold standard for paper that is not Japanese paper.
Tomoe River, that’s the japanese paper, it’s 52 gsm (super thin) and fountain pen friendly. Welcome to the rabbit hole 🤘
I was supposed Rhodia didn’t make the cut. They’ve got great paper for fountain pens. Though I still come back to the 1917 like everyone else
I just ordered the Leuchtturm 1917 120GSM for fountain pen use. I wasn’t aware that the regular version handles fountain pens 🖋️
I have a medium nib I think maybe larger ones won't work?
I've found that paper surface and opacity make more of a difference than paper thickness. Some thick papers take ink like a paper towel. Some thin papers can take a double-broad nib in stride.
Good stuff 📓
Can you do a fountain pen collection video please
📓Thanks for all the great content.
Looking to get a leather wrap for my Bible, any suggestions?
I'm always skeptical when someone says they're a theologian and I've been wondering about your stance for a while but as you like Doctrine and Devotion all my worries have gone. I miss that podcast.
Bien por el doblaje!.
What kind of brand, is best?
False. Brown brand.
Brands. Books. Bene Gesserit.
I think you'll like Maruman Mnemosyne for some of the nest Japanese paper
Becoming Gandalf one notebook at a time
Love that card ai recorder, but man I will have to wait to get some more funds.
You're right about subscriptions. They are the worst. I think you get 300 hours without a subscription which is good but I feel you
@ParkerNotes looking at it more and some reviews I retract my statement and dismissal.
I am so thankful that I started journaling basically EVERYDAY and I never stop
I autistically staked your content out and got the goods already.
Some other grrat notebook brands to check out: Hobonichi, Sterling Ink, Archer & Olive, Notebook Therapy.
