Fair review pal. When I saw this at the pictures when it came out I nearly left about half way through.
I stuck with it though and ended up enjoying it.
It's become a favourite over the years, but there's a few versions out there.
For anyone who knows what to do and where to look there's a fan-edit by a guy called Spicediver with lots of deleted material added in that adds a lot to the experience. It's the best way to see the movie by far.

Great video, Ray! Very entertaining, as always. I saw "Dune" in the theater when it was released in the mid-1980s. I had enjoyed the book and I also enjoy space epics, so I had high hopes for this film. I was disappointed, but I didn't think it was awful. I would rate it a bit higher than you did. I definitely did think it was boring and/or irritating in various places. However, I can't say that I didn't enjoy it at all, and there is much about it that has stuck in my mind over the years (unlike the 2000 three-part TV miniseries "Frank Herbert's Dune" -- I remember nothing at all about that version!). Sting was great. I have not seen the 2021 film "Dune" or "Dune: Part Two" that is showing in theaters now.

Another impressive outfit and pose for Ray on the trailer for his Dune review. I had assumed that Ray spent his time and money dressing up for these publicity shots. Now I am wondering if the images are all AI generated. I'm sure Ickle Ray could manage the technology.

I too am consistently impressed by Ray's outfits and poses on the thumbnails and have wondered if he actually dresses up for them or if the pictures of him in those great outfits are created with AI, photoshop, etc. Great job, however he does it! I always get a big kick out of the thumbnails.

    The Sleeper has Awoken!
    One of my guilty pleasures.
New Dune might take the long way round telling the story but I'll always prefer the 1984 Lynch version

A few of my friends and I often cap our successes with the phrase "My name is a killing word." It... gets awkward when we say it in public, though.

This Dune needs a Rutger Hauer. Half star movie.

This was hilarious, from the random diatribe on karaoke to the underpants puppet with a swell of O Fortuna!
On another topic though, can someone maybe take a crack at what 'po-faced' means? I mean no offense, I just have never encountered the term before and google's not being very helpful.

"Wearing a particularly stern and disapproving expression; humourless". Apparently it dates back to the 1930s.
A bit like the later Matrix films where it's all very serious and they don't joke any more.

I remember when this came out in the theatres. There was a little booklet included with the ticket, a list of the words that would be unfamiliar to people who hadn't read the book (I had and have read it several times since). This movie is the best effort I've seen. Well cast. To be fair, the book is detailed and as full a world as any in fiction. It's a LOT to try to fit in a 2 hour runtime.

David Lynch said, way back in the day, that it really needed 12 hours, to do it justice.
He tried for 3 but, the studio would barely allow 2 hours. It's a shame that lengthy films, as per Lord of the Rings, weren't a viable option, back then.
The more recent Spicediver edit is 3 hours.
It really is a film that requires reading the book.

Wonderful stuff sir. The tendons inside the mouths of the Sand Todgers were done with rubber johnnies all tied together.
I liked Sting's performance and the shields and that. Apparently at the premiere they handed out booklets (like at the the opera) to explain what on Earth was happening. The book is FULL of inner monologues and thoughts and quotations and comes with its own glossary at the back.
A valiant attempt, but as you say it's a bit dull. The computer game was fun though, even though it didn't have Sting in it.

Yeah I'm with you on this one, but people are quite sensitive about their Dune universe so I tread lightly. To me, the story makes little sense and falls apart quickly into a silly mess. I'm not a fan, and I agree that a little bit of humour would do wonders. The films are so mirthless that I end up adding my own, like whenever they mention the spice melange I flash onto WC Fields telling a story about being assaulted with a mélange of succotash, Philadelphia cream cheese and asparagus with mayonnaise...

Everytime this was on telly back in the 90's I'd try and get through it, but it's as boring and unwatchable as the remakes.

    Chuckles aplenty!
Agreed, it was boring. Re: Sting, I thought his Amazon Indian friend with the wooden compact disc in his mouth would appear. Do you think he uses Old Spice, as he said he lasts several days, "exercising" with his wife? I think he takes himself that ludicrously that believes it. He used to be a High School teacher, which explains a lot.
Ditto, the aftershave quips, I thought the High Karate ads from the 70s would make its appearance. That's a thought. Work Valerie Leon, the ultimate Amazon, into 1 in the future. Early onset of adolescence due to that! Only joking.
Oh yes, a shout out for "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid."

I have always enjoyed sci-fi (and I've watched some stinkers in my time), but I was never remotely interested in watching this version, there was just something about it that put me off.
Heard the new version is excellent, but still can't see myself watching it.
    Great review as always Raymondo.
