Rodan (1956) Monster Madness We decided to upload old Monster Madness videos to Cinemassacre Plays this October. Most of the episodes have only been available on our website in the past.
Rodan's is probably my second or third favorite kaiju roar after the Big G's. Despite the fact we never see two Rodans sharing the screen ever again, it's slightly implied that the Showa Rodan from Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster, onwards, is one of the Rodans from this movie. When Rodan appears in Ghidorah, it emerges from the same volcano where the Rodan pair die in this movie. It's never outright stated, but there are little nods that Godzilla Raids Again, Rodan, King Kong vs. Godzilla, and Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster, all take place in the same universe.
"It's never outright stated" All of the Showa Godzilla movies take place in the same universe and many of the stand-alone movies were incorporated into that universe later. They didn't feel like they needed to outright state that because back then, they just assumed you already knew that.
@@INFERNO95 That is not true. It is meant to be the male Rodan who survived. I don't know where this rumor started, but it's something some fan made up.
@@INFERNO95, In Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster, it's stated that Rodan was "revived by volcanic gas" in Mount Aso, which was the same volcano as in Rodan's standalone movie. Whether this was the baby that hatched, or one of the adults was never stated. It was, however, implied to be one of the Rodans from the '56 movie.
Not just George Takei. The dub also had James Hong (who also did voices in Godzilla, King of the Monsters), and Paul Frees (Ludwig Von Drake, Boris Badenov, many Hannah Barbara characters, etc).
@@NoxHardigan yeah they'd be bird food for sure !!👍🙂🦅🦅then I guess pinhead pumpkinhead, and leather face are next on the menu, gotta keep the bird fed !!🙂
There's still plenty of classic kaiju movies from Toho that James has yet to cover on Monster Madness. Like Varan, the Mysterians, Frankenstein conquers the world, Space Amoeba and several others. Would love to see videos on those some day.
Agreed, as well as the original Mothra, Atragon and Latitude Zero. There is also plenty of other non-Toho Kaiju movies he could do like Daimajin, Gorgo, X from Outer Space, Gappa and Pulgasari
He has the tape of Space Amoeba, released here in the States as Yog, Monster from Space in his VHS collection. It’s from the Grampa’s Attic collection of horror movies hosted by Grampa Munster from the Munsters!
King of the Monsters 2019 did this monster SO MUCH JUSTICE. the best part is when Rodan tries to challenge Godzilla, he snarls at him, and he quickly submits to Godzilla's alpha status.
For as much Godzilla I watched as a kid, I never saw Rodan’s solo movie. I’ll have to track this down. Loved his other appearances, especially in Monster Zero
I’ve seen this one a number of times and it was a favorite as a kid. It’s actually pretty good. My only gripe is one scene towards the end with tanks and artillery blasting the land. It goes on for quite some time.
@The Grumpy Little Dog i mean,. man, do you see how detail the model and props ":cars, building, street .. the whole thing is top notch.. .. those thing take's a lot of time and lots of back pain.. james know all about it thou .. im sure he doesnt mean it in negative way..
Rowan is the definition of classic monster movies. Along with kong and godzilla and of course Mothra. I saw Rodan very long ago and it was so scary at the time. I loved it because of that. It's an amazing movie.
I'm surprised they never tried remaking this movie, i know that nowadays they'd just fuck it up but i'm surprised they haven't tried. This makes me want to go watch some of the Godzillathon reviews, my personal favorite Monster Madness.
Toho only cares about three monsters and Rodan is not one them. So much they could have done whit him over the years but toho is too stuck in there ways to give him a chance.
In Stephen King's novel "IT." the IT creature appears to the librarian Mike as a giant bird because he says he had watched the movie Rodan the night before and had terrible nightmares. IT chose this form as Mike's greatest childhood fear in which to appear to him.
one thing about the visuals is that they were in their prime in the showa era when legendary special effects director eieji tsuburaya was alive. during the dark age of godzilla from 1969-1975, the visuals either relied too much on stock footage or poor camera work and while the mechagodzilla films were good on their own, the visual effects were ultimately a step down from the 60's especially when seeing monsters in the background.
From what I read, one of the Rodans were killed and the other one committed suicide out of grief so I'm guessing that the Rodan in future films was their offspring.
A good review and I think a significant improvement over your old Godzillathon reviews. I know you grew up watching these dubbed, but I do think these Kaiju movies are better subtitled.
Those caterpillars had been just mutilating the miners. Then Rodan hatches from his egg and proceeds to eat them up like mere orderbs. A brilliant example of introducing a new threat that makes the old one look like nothing by comparison. In other words things are about to go from horrible to even worse.
Key Luke was the narrorator. George Takei was in the mix, as well ( he was also heard in Godzilla Raids Again aka Gojira's Counterattack!). I THINK James Hong was heard in Rodan (aka Daikaiju Radon!!), but I'm not 100% certain about that.
What everyone fails to mention is AKIRA IFUKUBE ‘s MUSIC , this music is haunting and is a style that is easily the most recognizable music ever done for film. When you hear his music, for the Ishiro Honda films , there’s no mistaking who’s music your hearing , intensely memorable
With all the monsters under too I was wanted to see a monsters fighting other monsters aside Godzilla like "rodan vs varan" or "angirus vs some other monster". We wouldn't get that until the mothers series decades later
Would be cool if he did a Kaiju athon Take a look at the remaining Toho, Daiei and other studios kaiju films Mothra Varan The Mysterians Daimujin Whale God Frankenstein conquers the world
@@elijahblechman8633 I considered that, but MCMXXXIV is several mistakes away from MCMLVI. It's not like you can add or remove a single letter, change a letter's position, or misunderstand the value of a single letter and arrive at 1934.
Yeah they weren't the best, but it's understandable (imo) since the older Monster Madness series seems very high-production and James has said he's had other major projects he's been working on. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Woaw never heard of this Movie. As a child my opinion was that rhodan was a weak Monster, with the new godzilla 2 cinema movie rhodan looks more frightend
I had this on VHS back in the day. Those were the days.
In this uncertain, stupid times Monster Madness comes as a soothing storm of terror and fascination.
We salute you, Cinemassacre team.
Rodan‘s original design will always be my favorite because I believe is the most classic looking design out of all the Rodan designs
Only thing about this movie is Rodan didn't even show up till like 70 minute mark.
Happens in a lot of horror and monster movies

Both Rodan die at the end of this movie. The Rodan that appear in the 60s is a new different Rodan who has no ties to the ones in this movie.
@@INFERNO95 That is not true. It is meant to be the male Rodan who survived. I don't know where this rumor started, but it's something some fan made up.

We all need Baby-Rodan !
Fun fact: The Rodan in the Monsterverse is often teased by the director as being the offspring of the the pair from this movie.
There is no way that’s canon.
The story of Rodan is great. I honestly would like to see this movie remade. It's one of the better Kaiju stories/plots without question. Rawwwrrr!
How would you like to see Jason Voorhees Freddy Kruger and Michael Myers team up on Rodan

Up from the Depths did them
I loved the intro to this year's Monster Madness. The creepiest and most well done of them all.
The bird egg hatching scene was really good.
I remembered as a child being scared of these movies, but like a good scare I still liked them all... Exept Gabara, I still get chills from him
Rodan will always be my favorite Toho film. The Big Four of Kaiju. An icon. King of the Monsters did him justice.
King of the Monsters 2019 did this monster SO MUCH JUSTICE. the best part is when Rodan tries to challenge Godzilla, he snarls at him, and he quickly submits to Godzilla's alpha status.
I think best part of KOTM was Rodan's awakening and jet fight. Those monster NEED way more humanity destruction.
They did Rodan dirty, Ever since the Heisei era, People have begun to forget Rodan USED to be Godzilla's equal
This is one of my favorite Japanese monster movies.
Always a pleasure to see a Kaiju video, thanks James!
For as much Godzilla I watched as a kid, I never saw Rodan’s solo movie. I’ll have to track this down. Loved his other appearances, especially in Monster Zero
Everything I know about 20th century film history is from you. Some of the best movie/video game content on the internet!

Me : wow,. the effect was actually preety good
James : the effect was a bit primitive
Yeah, I don't get it, they aren't primitive effects at all.

I look forward to these every year, especially the Toho films!
I watched this one when I tried to watch all the Toho Kaiju movies in order. I was burnt out when I tried to watch King Kong Escapes.
I shall attempt what you started 59 movies I have listed out from Godzilla mothra gamera and other kaiju films
Thank you for all the effort you put in your videos from acting to reviews to game play it is entertaining
They delved too greedily and too deeply
Those effects look awesome for the time. The physics of miniatures are usually pretty obvious, but those look great.

That was a genuinely really cool shot!
Insert 2019 Rodan theme here.
00:27 The Roman numerals say 1934 for the year of the film. MCM is 1900 + XXX (30) + IV (4).
I'm surprised they never tried remaking this movie, i know that nowadays they'd just fuck it up but i'm surprised they haven't tried.

Here comes RODAN!!!
Aside from Godzilla, Rodan is my favorite kaiju.
I'll have to watch this one. I may have seen it as a kid but not any time recent.
My uncle got me this on vhs for my birthday when I was about 6. The scenes in the mines really scared me when was little.
Rodan, The Mightest of Monsters!
I'm surprised this hasn't been featured on Monster Madness before.

Rodan Was my second favorite monster. No one compare to Godzilla.
My favorite toho film
0:37 ouch that, poor guy
I think the English version actually is sequenced better especially when the second Rodan emerges from the behind the mountains.
Rodan 2 (1963), Maybe A 2020 Reboot ?
I am a Fan of Kaiju completely Super Sentai, Gamera, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, & Godzilla I am a Full Kaiju fan by heart
A great sculptor and monster
I’ve never seen Megaguirus I had no idea it had any link to early toho kaiju
Fun Fact: Rodan (1956) is canon in the Godzilla Showa continuity, before Godzilla Raids Again (1955).
The music is the best. Like when the F-86s chase rodan that was reused in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah.
I can’t wait to get a copy of Avgn on switch.
Me too

I need to watch this film.
"Rodan is coming! Oh my!!!"
The Roman numerals on the title say 1934 (MCMXXXIV), for 1956 the numerals should be MCMLVI.
Lol I remember having these toys when I was younger this one was my fave next to MonsterZer0
Hey James, can you do a review of the 1999 movie "Virus"?

Oh cool
People probably don’t know this but in Stephen Kings It pennywise turns into Rodan and chases mike through a scrapyard
This is a bit of an unusual question, but why does the title screen say it was copyrighted in 1934 (in Roman, of course)?
