If you break Rosin you can put the broken pieces in a mold you make out of aluminum foil and put into a warm oven for about 10 minutes, the rosin will reform ,and you're all set to use again..
Been playing for almost 20 years and a lot of this is still new to me- the measuring with the pencil for tightness and hair cleaning especially. I was very young when I first started so reviewing the basics can help a lot. Very Cool, thanks for making it so easily understandable.
Thank you so much for sharing with us. The information very helpful, and your videos are a joy to watch. I just started the violin again after well over 50 years, I studied as a child. Your videos are encouraging, honest and accurate. Bravo! 🌟✨
Dear Melody, You're most welcome and thank you very much for your such kind words. And welcome back to the violin world, Melody!! I wish you lots of beautiful moments with your violin! Happy music making!
OMG, I was so annoyed with the dirty on bow hair near the frog and had no idea how to get ride of it. Here comes the solution and it was so easy. I am immediately going to clean it up. Thank you so much.
I know what you mean Zhong, no matter how careful we are, down by the ferrule on the frog is ultimately that one place where the bow hair gets mucky looking ahead of needing a rehair, so this video really helped me with the idea to best mitigate that. I agree that after a while, it gets unsightly and disruptive.👍👨🏻
I have just got my first cello and hadn’t a clue how to use rosin (the top has a shiny surface as if it had a plastic covering). Your video has been a lifesaver, thank you 😊
Thank you for everything you do, everytime I have a violin related question you already have a video ready! It's very useful when you don't have a teacher at hand ahah.
Mind blowing lesson. I chronically under rosined my bow all throughout my childhood playing. Now relearning as an adult I can be 10 times the player I ever was as a kid, all thanks to Joy!
A very comprehensive tutorial on how to rosin a violin bow. I just got a new violin bow and the sales lady was kind enough to do the first rosin for me section by section realizing that I am a student player. I hope this will help my violin playing in the future. Greeting to you from Hong Kong for the upcoming lunar new year of Tiger. Much happiness and good health.
Nice to meet you Joy. Good to talk on rosining the bow ... and really a never ending story. So many secrets ... but the boy is still producing the sound. And everybody has other details ... always interesting. Schöne Grüße aus Deutschland 👋
@@JoyLeeViolin schöne Grüße zurück Joy ... yeah your German still works fantastic. (I remembered that you studied and even worked here ... once you told it in an older video ...) and as I see over time: your channel here has a wonderful growth! ... this is the result of the consistency of a musician 😉👍(... by the way: I am a musician myself ... therefore I know the power of our repetition ... and what I mostly do: inspire others that they stay motivated ...👋)
I have multiple rosins depending on the time of year and strings. Also I will sometimes mix them to get a particular feel and sound. I do not rosin every day and I practice 2-3 hours daily. I prefer minimal rosin on my bow and have never had clumping issues. Thanks Joy.
Hi Instructor Joy, I am a hobby violin player who is currently in Hangzhou, China. A question that I am curious about throughout my years of stumbling on the violin is regarding the choice of rosin and the effects on the sound of the playing. So, the main question is: How will a good piece of rosin affect the projection of the instrument? Another side question would be whether you have any recommendations or brands of rosin that we should try out? (especially in a very wet climate like Hangzhou) Love your contents and have been learning lots from you, keep up the great work!
Dear Lim, Thank you very much for your kind message. There are many types of rosin. In one way of seeing the different rosin would be the colour and its dryness/ stickiness. Darker rosin tend to be stickier and easier to apply on the bow hair and lighter coloured rosin ( light yellow, or light golden) tend to be drier/ powderier and it takes longer time to apply on the bow hair. However after having lived many different continents ( Asia, Europe, Russia and America) with different climate, I found Hills and Sons Dark Rosin tend to work in most places fairly well. Normally in a humid area, drier rosin with lighter colour would be better, but I still recommend to try different kinds of rosin including this one. I hope you can try. Happy music making Lim!
Wow Joy.. 😎I thought I was the only one that did that side to side thing with rosining the bow! It was good to see that you do the same thing; Also, now I know I could pull the screw out and clean the hair with a new clean dry toothbrush.. I was wondering recently if it was possible for me to do a horsehair cleaning, so I really appreciated this video. Thank you so much! ❤️and respect!😘 👨🏻
Finger oils, dirt, or any foreign matter on the hair can make the bow hair slick and prevent grab …make sure your hair is clean before you decide you actually need to buy grabbier rosin..
Dear Fanny, each violinists have their own favourite. Stickier rosin tend to have a better grip. Kolstein is one of them. I hope you can try. Happy trying!
Hi Jubilee, thanks for your kind words. Sometimes the rosin builds up on parts of the bow and it could create things like that. Here is a video you might find it interesting. All the best to you! ua-cam.com/video/4vztXercdHM/v-deo.html
Nice explanation.. New insights for us.. Can I know the tutorial to build a new string / tuning ? Because these morning I unfortunately break my string 5 times.. Huhu.. Especially string E.. Thanks🙏
Thank you so much for your videos. I am learning a lot from you. I have a question. Can I leave my bow tight since it is fibreglass and won’t warp like wood? I don’t like to tighten it every day if it’s not necessary.
You're most welcome Stan and thank you also! Regarding the loosening your fiberglass bow, even though the bow stick may be more resistant than a wooden stick, but it is still not the best to leave the bow hair in constant tension. I encourage you to loosen your bow when you finish playing. Happy music making Stan!
You're most welcome Avishka. It is important to loosen to bow hair to give the bow stick a break from the tension and also to keep the bow in a good condition. The bow could break if stays in tension for too long. Happy practising!
As always thanks for the new info Joy! Just one question. What exactly does cleaning the bow hair with a toothbrush do? Does it get rid of the dark spots on the bow?
You're most welcome David. Brushing with a new tooth brush lightly cleans chunky bow hair part and also some dark spots which is a collection of grease.
Dear David, I personally never used any such substance to clean bow hair. I know a strong alcohol is used to clean strings, but I would not feel comfortable to use isopropyl alcohol on the bow hair. Happy violin playing!

these steps are great, but I think for non-professionals this method gives too much rosin on the bow hair. Just 2slow and strong wipes is enough
