I’m 70 and I bought my friends 1986 BMW R80RT 2 years ago. I’ve been trying to convince my wife to ride it with me, but I’ve spoiled her and she prefers my Harley Electraglide or Goldwing that we’ve ridden for the past 30 years. I’m going to show her this video. I told her that couples toured on these BMWs long before there were Goldwings. In 1973 when I was a poor college student I went to the local BMW shop and saw a new R90S. I’ve been in love with the Air Head Beemers ever since. I had a new BMW R65 which I rode all over Wyoming, Colorado and S. Dakota. I traded it for the new 1993 Goldwing which finally lured my wife on board. But at 70, I know my days of riding an 850 pound Harley two up are coming to an end. Hence, the R80RT. Keep the shiny side up!😎👍
You could pretend that both bikes have broken down and just the BM is functioning for the next trip😁 The RT can be made even lighter by removing that big fairing of course. But I expect you’ll find it light enough compared to your Harley. They are great bikes and still very usable and capable to this day. There’s loads of after market stuff available now too, so keeping them running well is easy. Hope she likes it🤞
So many bikes! so many trips! you must be retired 🤔 just found your channel and really enjoying the videos. I think many people visit here and then find most of Ireland isn't like this at all but it's good to be reminded that I could ride over to Mayo, or Kerry or Donegal in only a few hours and experience great roads and scenery rather then wishing I was in somewhere more exotic.
Quite true, its not all that nice, but mostly a good place to plonk around on an old bike. Wales is similar, the south is a bit too busy, as is the north, but mid is a bikers delight. Yorkshire is also a great biking area. Sort of retired!
Nice seeing waterfall in Tourmakeady Woods, my wedding photos taken there many years ago, Robert Shaw lived on edge of Tourmakeady, seen him many times, till his death, his favourite pub was in Churchfield called Paddy,s 1.5 miles away
The S type fairing is such a good design. Enough protection to cruise at the legal limit, allows airflow on hot days, the shape fits with the rest of the bike perfectly. I’ve had both RS and RT bikes in K series and oil head. The old boxer with S fairing is much nicer.
The bike ran great. I like the older bikes for touring, they seem to fit into the landscape better. The airhead motor remains a fabulous, flexible, easy going way of propelling you along. Still great two up, decent luggage too. BMW got it so right with these.
@@hansmonitio7462 still on points. A bit fiddly to set up, but utterly bomb proof. Easy to carry a spare set on tour. I have electronic on my race bike and my Guzzi 1000S, both have been 100% reliable. The Guzzi system is 25 years old! I wouldn’t hesitate to use electronic simply for the lack of maintenance. But, if I’m going into the unknown, think I’d stick with points.
Where better, just what we all need in present times. Beautiful scenery, relaxation and no worries.
Of course I’m following in your wheel tracks mum!

Its a very pretty part of the world there. Ireland is such a great biking destination. Robert Shaw was a fine actor, his Quint role was superb.
Michael Flatley has some serious competition.
Another great video = keep 'em coming rusty 😂👊
Another great video! I ended up installing the S type fairing on my (naked) R100RT, what an incredible difference!! Looks great too.

How did the beemer do in Ireland ?

A question, does your BMW still have a points ignition ? I am wondering if a switch to an electronic ignition on my 79 RS is a sensible thing to do.
